Great amp, great price, great service

KS from Columbus, Ohio on 11/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What can I say? I love music, love easy set up, know nothing about the technicalities of how to achieve these results. Crutchfield's team spent a lot of time walking me through options, advising me on the best value with our considerations in mind, and pointing us to well proven product. We love the Marantz integrated amp we purchased. When we had a challenge in connecting speakers, they were there to help. Great Product. Great Resources at Crutchfield. Great Value.

Pros: -Service and consultation -Reasonable pricing -Very good sound production

Good, but not excellent.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to replace my Rotel RA-1062 integrated amp with a machine that would offer separate bass and treble control(you can adjust one or the other on the Rotel, but not both). I purchased the PM6004 with the Marantz CD6004. Turning the volume control about a third of its range produced very good reproduction in bass, treble, and midrange. However, it was too loud for sustained listening pleasure. So, I turned it down and found the sound image slightly muffled. I then hooked up the Marantz CD player to my Rotel amplifier, and played classical music and 60's television themes at a volume level less than a quarter turn on the Rotel. The results were excellent. What I learned: 1) Sometimes, all you need is a great CD player. The Marantz provides that. 2) Know your listening habits. Reviewers may rave about an amp, but unless they state that it meets the same listening habits YOU have, keep an open mind but go out and listen to the equipment (which I didn't do) in the way you prefer. 3) Separate bass and treble controls on an amp( the Marantz) do not necessarily trump a more powerful machine with limited bass/treble control (the Rotel), and may even be less satisfactory. THE UPSHOT: I am keeping the Marantz CD 6004 (and my Rotel amp) and returning the PM6004 amp. And may I say that Crutchfield's service center was excellent in answering questions about equipment setup and cheerfully explaining the returns process. They are top notch.

Pros: Sounds good to very good at medium-high volumes.

Cons: At slightly gentler volumes, sound reproduction takes on a slightly muffled quality.

replacing a marantz with a marantz

tmc from boynton beach fl. on 2/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price can it compare to my old vintage marantz tube amplifiers? I connected my reel to reel deck and selected one of my best sounding 1/4 track classical tapes that has very complex demanding sound. Well, was i surprised, the sound quality is excellent. The sound quality of hi-end tube amplifiers is hard to match - this amplifier is a match. My cruthfield advisor (Dallas) recommended this amplifier over 3 other 5 star rated amplifiers.

Pros: straight forward amplifier designed for listing to full spectrum music from sources that required rca jacks. If you want to listen to music that has been suppressed i recommend looking for a unit of lesser quality and money.

Cons: none

Oh my...

Rich from Melbourne, FL on 8/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Oh my... that's all I can say. My trustee Rotel integrated amp blew its brains out in a thunderstorm, and so I was looking to replace it. This amplifier is spectacular for the price, and is the perfect pairing with the B&W 685's I own. After setting it up (and carrying my poor dead Rotel outside for burial) my wife walked in to my music room and accused me of replacing the entire system because she couldn't believe the change in sound. The sound is very fluid and highly detailed. I am so impressed.

Pros: Awesome sound, solid construction.

Cons: Not much.

Marantz PM6004

Romas from Naperville on 6/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp has replaced my close to 30 year Denon PMA 700V which gave up the ghost one weekend. I checked on-line for reviews so that I would find an equivalent replacement. The Marantz PM6004 had outstanding reviews and even though it was half the power of my Denon, I went for it. Well it took only 5 minutes to determine that this is a fantastic piece of audio equipment. The sound was outstanding and it made me realize that maybe my Denon had been suffering from old age for a few years already. The sound coming out of my speakers was crisp and clean across the full spectrum and I could get more than enough volume out at a fairly low setting. Setup was a breeze, the unit fits right in and has a very nice design. My only complaint would be the source selector. Not sure I care for a knob to turn. It has already caused others in the family to turn it thinking it's a volume control. Also the instructions for connecting the speaker wires imply doing it a way that will not work. Hmm, well I got around that. Remote is a great feature. And I can't forget that the phono input was another feature that sold me. I have a fairly new Audio Technica cartridge and this amplifier did an extremely excellent job of processing the signal. I highly recommend this amplifier to others. The price point is great and you get sound that would make you think the unit cost significantly more.

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Easy to setup and use. Great styling.

Cons: Selector knob is an odd feel, used to buttons. Speaker hook-up very strange.

Wonderful amplifier

ThadB from San Marcos on 5/13/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this from Crutchfield along with its companion CD6004 (reviewed separately), and simply couldn't be much happier. This unit was to augment my 35 year-old Onkyo A-7, but found this unit to be so good, I felt comfortable selling the Onkyo (I thought I'd be buried with it). The clarity and detail presented in the sound is impressive. I was unsure that newer amplifiers could duplicate the balanced sound I was used to. The modern amplifiers I've listened to all seem to "bass-y". Jazz, Blues, and Classical come through with amazing detail. When paired with my Klipsch Heresy I's and II's, the high end really shines. The bass remains tight and not at all "muddy". I would easily recommend this amplifier, especially for the price. Crutchfield helps make these decisions easier with their 60-day return policy. So far, I've never had to take advantage of it.

Pros: Very low distortion, excellent build quality, wonderful sound. Gold inputs for all components, and banana plug speaker interface. Excellent attention to detail from this manufacturer. A quality product!

Cons: The remote control, when used with the companion CD6004, can be a bit confusing. Then again, it could just be my 54 year-old brain! I would suggest downloading the user manual prior to purchase. Then you can hit the ground running.

fit and finish

JD from USA on 4/19/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The fit and finish attest to that. If you listen to 2 channel music and have a turntable, this amp should be on your short list. The musical quality is impressive. I returned an NAD 326 BEE for this amp and I am very satisfied. If you would have told me during a blind listening test that the PM 6004 sold for $1000 I would have believed you. Because of Crutchfield's outstanding customer service, I am able to enjoy this amp which is a much better fit for my listening environment.

Pros: Bass, details, dynamics. Phono stage. Warm sound.

Cons: None at this price.

Great amp

YJ from Golden, CO on 11/13/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although this amp was very good in all aspects, I ended up choosing Peachtree Decco 2. IMO, Marantz is a far better product... except for female vocal. I knew Marantz was better in all aspects, but I just could not let the warm female vocal of Peachtree go. However, if you want tight bass and all round performance, go for Marantz!

Pros: Great sound

Cons: The look, and sounds little cold

2Ch Integrated Amplifier: The Marantz PM6004 is a two-channel integrated amplifier rated at 45 watts x 2-channels into 8-ohms & 60 watts x 2-channels into 4-ohms. The amplifiers themselves are custom-designed entirely with discrete components so you don't suffer any of the built-in limitations of off-the-shelf integrated circuits.

Current Feedback Amplifier: The Marantz PM6004 features current feedback design. This unit uses a high-speed current feedback amplifier circuit for its preamplifier and power amplifier so that signals from the your audio source can be amplified with high fidelity. This extraordinary circuit accurately tracks quickly changing, wide bandwidth musical signals for greater resolution of fine musical detail. The high-speed current feedback amplifier reproduces a natural sound space.

High Quality Audio Design: This unit has a high-quality audio design such as a minimized signal path, use of high sound quality parts, and large power circuits; which is possible only in discrete audio components.

  • High-Power Output: This unit features a slim-line body, but utilizes a large power supply for dynamic music reproduction with high-power.
  • Symmetrical Circuit Layout: To achieve the best possible sonic performance, signal paths need to be short, direct & mirror imaged. The construction of the integrated amplifier's circuitry provides improved stereo imaging by ensuring close to perfect symmetry between right & left channel layout
  • Shottky Diodes: A Shottky diode is a special type of diode with a very low forward-voltage drop compared to normal diodes. This lower voltage drop translates into higher system efficiency. Shottky diodes have very fast signal handling, can easily stay higher temperatures and are sensitive very low voltages.
  • Toroidal Transformer: A toroidal transformer has several advantages over a normal EI core transformer. It is very efficient & therefore delivers more power compared to the same size of an EI core transformer. In addition, due to its shape, the electromagnetic radiation & the mechanical vibration are extremely low all ending in a better sound quality.

Aluminum/Glass-Reinforced Resin Front-Panel: The integrated amplifier's front panel uses a carefully chosen combination of aluminum & glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input selection, heighten its elegant appearance.

Protection Circuit: The integrated amplifier's Protection Circuit is activated in the following situations.

  • If the speaker cable wire touches the rear-panel or screws; or if the speaker cable wire touches the speaker cable's positive & negative sides together.
  • If the surround temperature is extremely high.
  • If the inside of the amplifier gets hot from extended use at a high output.

Auto Standby Mode: With the Auto Standby Mode "On", this unit will automatically enter the Auto Standby Mode after approximately 30 continuous minutes of no output from the speakers or headphones.

Master Power: A mechanical switch turns the main power on/off. When off, the remote has no effect. When on, the remote can be used to switch between on and standby.

Input Selector: A rotary knob is used to select the input source (Phono, CD, Tuner, AUX/DVD, Recorder 1/2,) for listening.

Speakers: These buttons turn the speaker output to the speakers connected to the Speaker System A/B terminals on the rear panel On and Off.

Source Direct: There is a Source Direct switch so you can bypass tone and balance controls for the shortest signal path from input to output. When source direct is engaged the bass, treble, and balance circuits are bypassed.

Tone Control: This unit has a tone control function for adjustment of bass (low frequency) and treble (high frequency) sound to produce your preferred sound.

  • Bass: A rotary knob to adjust the bass output; +/-10 dB @ 100 Hz.
  • Treble: A rotary knob to adjust the treble output; +/-10 dB @ 10 kHz.

Balance: A rotary knob to adjust the left/right balance.

Loudness: The Loudness features compensates for human hearing characteristics by boosting the bass and treble response at low volume levels to achieve a more pleasing tonal balance.

Remote Control: The supplied wireless remote will control the PM6004 & Marantz CD players, DVD players, tuners, or tape decks.

Gold-Plated Speaker Terminals: The speaker system A & system B outputs are gold-plated binding posts. They are not 5-way posts, but will accept  banana plugs (single/dual), pin connectors, & bare wire.

Gold-Plated Inputs/Outputs: The PM6004 is fitted with gold-plated stereo RCA inputs & outputs.

  • Line Inputs: The CD, Tuner, & Aux/DVD inputs are gold-plated stereo RCA connectors.
  • Recorder: Recorder 1 (CD-R) & Recorder 2 (MD/Tape) have gold-plated stereo RCA inputs/outputs.
  • Phono (MM): The RCA phono input will accept moving magnet (MM) cartridges. There is a ground terminal beside the phono input.

Remote control: An RCA input and an RCA output are used with other compatible Marantz components using the D.BUS remote system, CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc. This allows the included remote to control the other Marantz components.

Flasher In: This 3.5mm terminal is to control the unit from another zone with an optional keypad (sold separately).

Headphone: A standard 1/4" headphone jack is on the front panel. The speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones so the speakers must be manually turned off.

AC Outlets: The Marantz PM6004 is fitted with two switched & one un-switched AC power outlets to connect your other A/V components.

Power Can Be Pretty

Written by Dave Delamere, Copywriter, on 8/9/2012 11:35:00 AM

The component's sleek finish immediately attracted me, and I was fortunate to be able to sample this Marantz PM6004 integrated amp in my home. I coupled the PM6004 with a pair of Cambridge Audio S70 floor-standing speakers.

It was a classic example of the RMS power number not being representative of what this beauty can do. The numbers say 45 watts RMS per channel, and the speakers can handle 120 watts RMS. I never had to turn the volume past halfway to get amazing depth and detail out of all the music I threw at it. The speakers started to give way to this amp at the higher volumes. So power was not an issue.

Using an NAD C446 digital media tuner as the only source, I played a variety of digital music with higher and mid-level bit rates. The PM6004 delivered great presence and a precise soundstage from both Internet radio stations and the USB thumb drive music I plugged in. Ella never sounded so good, Eddie Van Halen shredded even better than I remembered. It was a wonderful audio experience in a beautiful package.
