That's because this player sounds so good, you'll forget where the time went as you happily rediscover your digital music collection. Praise for the Marantz SA8004 from The Absolute Sound

"Tonally neutral, musically authoritative and natural, with just a hint of warmth, this two-channel SACD/ CD player is just about as seductive a component as you could want, especially at its price, which feels like a giveaway. The SA8004 is a music lover's dream for those who favor classical, traditional pop, jazz, folk, world, and any other music with voices and acoustic instruments. The 8004 also features limited music-server and Internet functions."

Top-notch quality inside and out

The SA8004's specially designed disc transport, double-layered bottom chassis, and reinforced front panel resist vibrations that can adversely affect sound. A hefty power supply delivers plenty of clean current for lively, low-noise playback. A high-end digital-to-analog converter (DAC) accurately reproduces audio tracks with stunning clarity and detail. The gold-plated, machined brass outputs help maintain sound quality by ensuring the best signal transfer to your stereo system, and are widely spaced so they won't cramp the connectors on high-quality interconnects.

Better sound from your iPod and computer

The SA8004 can also be used as a stand-alone DAC. Marantz outfitted it with two USB ports — a feature rarely seen on SACD/CD players. The front-panel port lets you plug in an iPod® or thumb drive, and take advantage of this player's high-end DAC for the best possible sound from your portable music library. Rear-panel USB, optical, and coaxial inputs accept digital audio signals from a PC or another digital music source, and output them as high-quality analog audio signals.

Crisp, full detail sound. Great tonal balance. Tested with various genre of music. All great sound - Exceptional sound when listening to acoustic recordings. Highly recommend to anyone with an ear for music.

Pros: Capability to play music from CD (pre-recorded and downloaded), I-phone and USB. Well balanced sound throughout.

Awesome SACD/CD player!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this Marantz SA8004 as a match for my PM8004 and couldn't be happier. This unit much like the amp is distortion free and brings new life to CDs as it clarifies and brings out the sound of instruments that I had not experienced while listening on my other system.

Pros: solid built with clean distortion free performance

Cons: none

Cool Unit

SH from NC on 8/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice match for my PM8004. The SCAD was not a selling point for me and I may not purchase any. I did like the USB option on the back of the unit for hooking up a laptop and it produces clear sound. I find myself often using the USB on the front with an iPod Touch for radio and streams. I was disappointed to find that an iPad was not compatible but not surprised, and consider this as a shortfall of Apple products. I may explore the optical and coax options further, but I am pretty happy with the sound of my CD collection using RCA Components. I appreciate the build, it seems really solid and also appreciate the great sound produced.

Pros: Accurate clear and warm sound.

Cons: Limited compatibility from USB front port.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had the Marantz SA8004 about a month now and am so so happy with this player, started with CDs when they first came out in the late 80s, though they were a better idea, like anything new bugs had to be worked out, thought they would overtime, my Marantz SA8004 gives you front row center performance on CDs that are over 30 years old an your there, never skips a beat, this is what I had alway hoped for just had to weight for what I always thought was on that little disk, it was worth the weight, Over the years have had 16-18 players but none sound like this player, much better than all the rest, its right sounding, had a very good player traded back a Marantz 6004CD player that sounds very very good but the SA8004 & PM8004 is at a different level, Thank You Crutchfield.

Pros: Interchangeable remotes SA-PM GREAT SOUNDING .............look nice. does not take up that much room for the two pieces, Very Cool running no outside noise except music to my ears, when you turn it up your inside the music an music is wall to wall or ear to ear, never had anything like this combo before..............

Cons: Nothing yet! Am a Stereo guy from the 60s that wanted GREAT STEREO. Got it in Spades with this setup! Am not over stateing a thing................walterb

SA8004 to play SHM Discs

George J. from Belmont MI on 7/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can not give this unit a review, unless i get it to play SHM Discs. It is hooked up to 6004, both Marantz products.I have been told by Crutchfield that it would play the SHM discs.

Pros: Nice unit with other discs

Cons: Can not play SHM Discs.

Belive it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did much reading on this unit before ordering. Read about its wonderfully musical and non-fatiguing nature. How it plays both sacds and redbooks both to great effect. It's great build quality and nice cosmetics. Well you can believe it all! I listen to classical, jazz, and occasional rock and this player is the most natural sounding unit I have heard at anywhere near the price. The detail is there but there is just no edge or fatigue to the music. Listened to The Nutcracker/Semyon Bychkov the other night and I must say I enjoyed this recording more than ever. The strings in particular were beautifully rendered--a difficult test in my opinion. Vocals are full and robust without any edge. Smooth mechanical operation without operational issues. If you need something to reach out and shout, sizzle, and boom look elsewhere. If you love a player that is a slave to the music, look no further.

Pros: Wonderful combination of detail and smoothness that draws you in and beautifully serves the music.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this player to replace a cranky 8 year old NAD C542 which recently would only play discs when it wanted to. When I got the Marantz I could not believe how heavy and solid it is; feels like my Parasound Halo preamp. Swapped out the NAD and put the Marantz in its place. Absolutely could not believe how much more detail I could hear in my favorite discs. Vocals and instruments sounded more natural, with the soundstage now deeper, wider and more three dimensional. Music sounds more like music.Absolutely incredible. Your mileage may vary of course, depending on the associated equipment in your system. The MSRP on this player is almost twice as much as my old player, which was a decent sounding unit. But it sounds like I got 3 or 4 times more CD player for my money. Well worth it. If you're looking for a better quality product to replace entry level gear then look no further. This unit was very well reviewed by the publications The Absolute Sound and Stereophile which made my decision alot easier. The lack of CD Text support was a little bit of a bummer but not that big of a deal since this is more of a purist type unit. Dont own any SACD's yet but will be getting some real soon. Havent tried the DAC function with it yet.

Pros: Incredible sound quailty and rock solid build. Plus Crutchfield free shipping and excellent packing.

Cons: no CD Text, a minor quibble

The Angel in the SACD Details

Bob A from Louisville, KY on 2/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Didn't know whether to start on the extreme quietness of background (read zero noise), or the amazing detail in the SACD laser output. The details of orchestral instruments in even old plain CD recordings was a revelation. The Marantz SA8004 also differentiates the ambience of recording studios or live concerts. Sound stage of good recordings is strikingly brought out. I am listening through HiFiMAN HE 500 headphones driven by a HiFiMAN EF5 (DY-1 powered) amplifier.

Pros: Individual instrument details from the SACD laser system.

Cons: Preamplifier power could be higher to drive planar magnetic phones without an intervening separate preamp.

Great Audio - Imperfect Functionality

Arthur from Maryland on 12/3/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has simply superb sound. The great majority of the time I use it for standard CDs and I find they have a greater smoothness a brilliance than I have ever heard before. Many CDs (such as opera or classical) have continuous music which is divided into tracks. If I program the unit to play a group of continuous tracks (maybe the first scene from an opera) the music does not play properly. At the end of a track the player stops, inserts a brief pause, then starts the next track. The resulting stutter is very disruptive to the flow of the music. I've owned many CD players and this is the first one to exhibit this behavior. My other complaint is that the USB input that allows the player to stream music from a computer does not work well. When I try to use it, there are occasional 'pops' which are apparently due to data transfer errors. I'm sure the problem is in the player, because the computer interface works flawlessly when I use it with a variety of other digital to analog converters (including an external sound card and a Sony AV receiver).

Pros: The audio quality from this unit is the best I have heard from a CD player

Cons: Digital inputs are finicky, and CD programming feature is flawed.

Marantz SA 8004

Anonymous from Martinez Ca. on 9/6/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would just like to say that anybody who is in the market for a CD/SACD player that the Marantz SA8004 is one of the best I've heard. I am a very happy camper when I'm playing CD's or the few SACD's I have on the Marantz SA8004. It can't get any better than what I hear. Maybe a player costing many thousands would sound better but for the buck you can not beat the Marantz SA8004.

GeorgeB from Modesto, CA on 5/18/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Marantz SA8004 based on the glowing review from Paul Seydor in the Absolute Sound magazine, to play my large collection of classical CD's. I use it both alone and as a transport for my MSB Gold Link Dac. It sounds fantastic either way. It is very musical, relaxed and not fatiguing, a joy to just listen and submerge myself into the music. I bought an open boxed unit, but it came well-packaged and in the factory box and was mint in every way. I am very satisfied. I give it and Crutchfield five stars.

There is room for improvement

kob from Princeton, NJ on 4/4/2011

1. Didn't try SACD (don't have any disks yet), so cannot really comment on this. 2. CD plays good enough, though absence of support for CD Text is somehow dissapointing for a unit at this price. 3. Navigation through folders/files (.mp3/.wav) on USB card could be better, but acceptable. Folder/File names are shown in a scrolling mode (let you know where you are and what is playing). 4. Navigation through similar folders/files (.mp3/.wav) on CD-R Data Disk is way too primitive, inconvenient and, honestly, a big disappointment (especially for the unit's price). Seems like Marantz engineers (who design such interface) use at home some other units. Fortunately, I do not use mp3 disks it a lot.

Top Notch.

audio gorn from AZ on 3/31/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great service from Crutchfield. Unit arrived quickly and well packaged. At first I felt the sound was a bit mellow. But as the player burned in, it opened up a bit. Lots of bass! And very smooth, some will find it too smooth. I must say it eliminates listening fatigue entirely. A great player for horne speakers that may sound shrill with other units. The best performance is the SACD playback. And it seems the dac was desinged with that as the first priority. So if you find your speakers are overly bright, I think you will be happy. If your system is already laid back. You might find it to mellow.

Blame it on the Rolling Stones

PatB from Cleveland OH on 11/4/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Back in 2002, I picked up a set of the Rolling Stones ABKCO re-mastered discs. These are the "hybrid" variety in that they have a CD layer and an SACD layer. The discs, 22 in all, remained sealed and unplayed all this while. Then, while cleaning out my attic a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon an old Sony DVD player with SACD capability and decided to give it a go. I stuck in "Let It Bleed," and played it all the way through. Sounded great! So I decided to get an up-to-date SACD player, and, being a Marantz guy from way back, ordered the SA8004 from Crutchfield. As soon as it arrived (two days FREE shipping), I hooked it up and gave "Let It Bleed" a go once again. The sound is absolutely great. No, there's no dramatic difference from regular CD sound but there is a noticeable improvement...and regular CD's also show a noticeable improvement. Very clean, very smooth, very nice. Nothing harsh or strident. Absolutely exellent bass. Over the years, I've had Sony, Panasonic, Technics, Marantz, and other CD and/or DVD players. I've had single plays, magazine types, and carousels. I've pretty much had 'em all. But this Marantz SA8004 hooked up to a Marantz 2250B vintage receiver, firing through JBL 4311 Monitors, sounds better than anything I've ever had in my lifetime. Sounds great, easy to use, nothing complicated. Highly recommended.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The following discs are compatible:

  • Single Layer Super Audio CDs: contain a single HD (high density) layer, which can contain a high quality stereo area and a high quality multi-channel area (only the stereo area is played by the SA8004); playable only on an SA-CD player
  • Dual layer Super Audio CDs: contain two HD layers for longer playing times; the information is recorded on one side only, so the discs do not have to be turned over; playable only on an SA-CD player
  • Hybrid Layer Disc: contain a high density SA-CD layer and a conventional CD layer, allowing them to be played either on an SA-CD or standard CD player
  • Conventional Audio CDs: audio CDs containing music tracks only; CD-DA format
  • CD-R/CD-RW: CD-R (Recordable) and CD-RW (ReWritable) discs containing standard CD-DA recordings, as well as WMA, and MP3 audio music files

Note: The SA8004 is a stereo-only player, and cannot play multi-channel audio areas.

Super Audio CD: The Super Audio standard is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology. This direct-stream digital format is a 1-bit system with a sampling frequency 64 times higher than a conventional audio CD (2,822,400 Hz vs. 44,100 Hz). SA-CD produces a frequency response of 2 Hz to 50 kHz and a 110 dB dynamic range. Because of the way inaudible and audible frequencies mix, the resulting sound is more natural.

Audio Features

Super Audio DAC: The SA8004 uses a high performance 192 kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4398 Digital-to-Analog Converter with a digital filter for exceptional signal processing.

HDAM (High Definition Amplifier Module) SA2: Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, rendering a more dynamic sound and less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. In addition to Marantz's proprietary HDAM-SA2 (Super Audio) signal transfer modules, audio path circuits boast custom-selected and, in some cases, custom-made internal components chosen for their combined contribution to overall signal quality.

Toroidal Transformer: The materials and manufacturing process of the transformer's ring-shaped core are designed to reduce vibration, while the short-ring attached to the perimeter of the transformer reduces magnetic leakage flux.

Large Block Capacitor: A large capacity 3300 μF block capacitor, selected for its acoustic characteristics, is incorporated into the power supply circuit.

Audiophile Grade Capacitors: The SA8004 features the same audiophile-grade film capacitors and electrolytic capacitors used in top-range modes.

Digital Outputs: Two digital outputs, one optical (Toslink) and one coaxial (RCA), are provided for sending the audio signal to the digital input terminals of a receiver or digital recorder. No signal is output from either during playback of the HD layer of a Super Audio CD; digital signals are output when playing a CD, the CD layer of a Hybrid SA-CD, or any device connected to one of the digital inputs.

Digital Inputs: Optical, coaxial, and USB digital inputs allow you to use the internal D/A converter with an external digital source. Only PCM signals are compatible with the optical and coaxial inputs.

Analog Output: The player features a Stereo RCA analog output connection.

Headphone Output: The unit has a front panel 1/4" headphone jack with level control.

USB/iPod Control

USB Port: This unit has USB ports on the front and rear panels. The front panel port is designed for USB memory devices (thumb drive, hard drive, etc) or direct iPod connection. The rear port is designed to connect a computer, with the SA8004 acting as the D/A converter, routing all sound to your connected audio system. The front panel USB port is compatible with FAT16 and FAT32 file systems and will play MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files. The SA8004 can support up to 700 folders and 65,535 files per folder. The front-panel controls and supplied wireless remote control will operate your USB device or iPod.

Built-In iPod Control: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the front panel USB port using the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPod (not included with this unit). Playback can be controlled using the front panel or remote buttons, or the iPod itself. Sound quality is maximized by using the USB connection along with the SA8004's D/A converter. The unit is Made for iPod and Made for iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of Sept. 2011):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. The SA8004 will not charge an iPod when playing a disc.

Remote Control

IR Remote: The supplied RC004SA IR wireless remote control is a full-feature remote control for the SA8004. It also has mute, volume, and input controls for a compatible Marantz receiver or amplifier.

Remote Input/Output: Two RCA jacks (1 in and 1 out) are provided for connecting this player and another Marantz A/V component for system remote control purposes. The accompanying switch allows you to select the remote control mode you desire: External (when the player is connected to another component's remote control jacks) or Internal (when the player is used as a standalone component).
