Our take on the Westinghouse LVM-37w1

With true 1920 by 1080-pixel resolution, this no-nonsense flat-panel LCD delivers on the "1080p" buzz — at a great low price that's pretty buzz-worthy, too. The 1080p design of the Westinghouse LVM-37w1 gives it the rare ability to show every detail of a 1080i HDTV broadcast without reducing picture clarity.

This display is a monitor only — there is no built-in tuner of any type. For standard broadcasts, one easy solution is to make use of the TV tuner built into your VCR. To receive high-definition signals, simply connect a separate HDTV tuner. The back-panel "jack pack" includes composite, S-video, and HD-compatible component video inputs, as well as two DVI digital video inputs for use with compatible HD tuners and "upconverting" DVD players.

A powerful built-in "scaler" converts all incoming video signals to match the LCD panel's 1080p native resolution. Whether you're enjoying a DVD movie or studying a computer spreadsheet, the LVM-37w1 displays everything with pinpoint detail.

Worth the Money

Steven from Los Alamos, NM on 3/20/2006

If you have been putting off the purchase of a flat panel television due to the price and the questions of image quality then the LVM-37W1 might deserve your attention. You will be pleased with its performance and options for later upgrades.

At first I was using the S-Video input and was happy with that. I have now change to the component inputs and much happier at the increased performance.
Absolutely Awesome

Brent from Southern California on 3/11/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the monitor for one reason... I work on my PC 8+ hrs a day. I wanted a larger resolution for my PC, without sacraficing pixel size (who wants to squint at the screen all day.)

It's like performing my work on a wall, instead of a little computer screen.

At first, I used my old VGA cord to connect it. Picture quality was OK at 1920x1080, but it seemed a little fuzzy. That was until I realized I was getting an interlaced image with the VGA connection.

I immediately went out and picked up a DVI cord to connect them. What an outstanding improvement. If you are going to connect it to your PC, be sure your PC has a DVI connection, and purchase a DVI cord.

Overall, this is the best thing I've ever bought. It has made my work three times more productive.

Excellent TV that hits the sweet spot on the market

Brian from East Berlin, PA on 3/10/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After many months of in depth research and waiting for almost 2 years I selected the Westinghouse LVM-37w1. Given what's available on the current market you can't beat this deal for quality and price. I looked at all of the major brands and most of the no name brands for LCD and plasma TVs that were 32-42 inches. Even though comparable plasmas and some lcds looked slightly better close up, the price difference wasn't worth the extra cost ($500+ HDTV plasma, $1000-$2000+ lcd) and at a lower resolution. At a normal viewing distance it was very difficult to tell the difference and the problems with glare on the plasma displays was a problem with my current home setup. The tradeoff of tuner for a reduction in cost is more than worth it and its one less feature I have to worry about going bad on my TV. None of the other TVs could provide 1080p resolution for anywhere close to the price of the Westinghouse. Granted there is very little 1080p content currently but the fact is that HD content will be increasing greatly with each passing year and I will be ready to view every crisp detail as it arrives.
We have watched 480i to 720p content on the TV and everything looks very good. Hands down HD content looks excellent. Even a VCR on composite cables is acceptable although not the preferred viewing source. Most of our viewing involves satellite from Dish Network or DVDs, which is still only a 480 signal, everything looks very good. I have been very happy with the picture quality, functionality, and value of the TV. I look forward to more HD content in my future!

My setup: DISH Network digital satellite(S-Video), Sony DVD player(Component), 1 old VCR(Composite)

Westinghouse LVM-37w137" HDTV-ready 1080p LCD monitor

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is unbelievable. I received my Westinghouse LVM-37w137" HDTV-ready 1080p LCD monitor in perfect condition and on time. Crutchfields supplied 4 sheets of wire labels that were very handy. With the labels in hand I decided to go ahead and clean up the mess of wires I had behind my equipment. Now it is very easy to locate and change any component wire. The monitor is only a week old now but I love everything about it. I am sure glad I ignored the few negative reviews I saw. This is a great unit and I recommend it and Crutchfields highly.

Buy this and relax

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this two weeks ago, and I am thrilled. The picture is great, it was easy to install and works fine. I did a lot of shopping and comparing. I wanted something simple. I don't need a super tuner; I pay for a cable box. I don't need state of the art speakers; I run it through my surround sound system. I did need some help setting it up, so I called customer service--at 7 p.m.--and someone answered and politely walked me through it. The price is right, and shipping was free. Buy this TV.

This TV is a great buy!

Dave M from Bronxville, NY on 12/6/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this TV for almost a week now, and have been really impressed by the picture quality.

I use a digital cable box from Cablevision, and the HD programming is spectacular. The standard definition (SD) programs vary based on quality of the signal, from poor to DVD quality. Of course, the bad signals looked bad on my Sony Wega SD tv as well.

Black level is where you make the compromise, as with most LCD tvs. I have struck a good balance of getting pretty dark blacks without losing all detail, but still not as good as my old Sony. However, in a softly lit room, it is not an issue. When you watch in a dark room, the black level issue is more apparent.

This TV responds to my Sony TV remote(?!) for almost all functions, so I did not have to fiddle with my cable remote to control things. If you have a universal remote, try using SONY codes if you can't find others.. The included remote is not as bad as some reviewers on other sites say - maybe I'm easily satisfied, or else I am more concerned with the picture.

The lack of HDMI connections is not an issue as far as I am concerned. DVI supplies digital quality picture, just as good as HDMI from what I have read, and you can simply use RCA plugs for audio. It is still HDCP compliant, so it is not a big deal to me.

HD programming has such a great look on this tv - film-like, with a nice punch to the the picture. DVDs look great, too - just remember to use Progressive scan if your player supports it, and use the component inputs if you player doesn't have a DVI or HDMI output.

It's a real pleasure to watch. I reccommend it highly. Can't do better for $1899 and free shipping!

Wonderful picture on an attractive TV

Herb from Hokes Bluff, Alabama on 11/27/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a Westinghouse 37-inch LCD HDTV (LVM-37W1) from Crutchfield. I installed it with minimal difficulty and had it operating soon thereafter. Its attractive lines make it an excellent feature in our livingroom. The picture, sound, etc., are everything I expected. I'm delighted to have this TV join three other smaller, less spectacular sets in my home.
