Our take on the Westinghouse LVM-37w3

With full 1920 by 1080-pixel resolution, plus the ability to accept 1080p signals, Westinghouse's latest 37" LCD is more "HDTV-ready" than nearly any other flat-panel set you can buy. The 1080p design of the LVM-37w3 allows it to show every detail of a 1080i HDTV broadcast without reducing picture clarity. And 1080p-compatible inputs put you in the driver's seat for the new high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players.

And 1080p-compatible inputs put you in the driver's seat for the new high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players.

This display is a monitor only — there is no built-in tuner of any type. For standard broadcasts, one easy solution is to make use of the TV tuner built into your VCR. To receive high-definition signals, connect a separate HDTV tuner. The set's back-panel "jack pack" includes composite, S-video, and HD-compatible component video inputs. You also get one HDMI and two DVI digital video inputs for use with compatible HD tuners and DVRs, as well as "upconverting" DVD players. Even the PC input can accept signals up to 1080p.

A powerful built-in "scaler" converts all incoming video signals to match the LCD panel's 1080p native resolution. Sound quality is quite good also, thanks to a built-in 3-speaker system. Whether you're enjoying a DVD movie or studying a computer spreadsheet, the LVM-37w3 displays everything with startling clarity and detail.

Simply the best value 1080p monitor around

Claudio from Waverly, IA on 7/25/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do you want 1080p on a budget? This is the way to go. It is by far the best monitor you can ever get for around $1200. Granted, it can be found for less--but I would rather spend a hundred bucks more and have Crutchfield's friendly service, knowledgeable assistance, and timely deliver.

The picture quality is superb when fed an HD signal and decent otherwise. Viewing angles are as advertised. It does lack a few color customization options (no direct R/G/B tuning) but most users can live with that. Buying a calibration DVD certainly helps anyway. The response time is excellent and there is no visible ghosting even in games. Naturally, this unit does best what it was designed to do: a computer monitor and a gaming screen.

It is certainly good for viewing HD DVDs and Blu-Ray movies--but blacks are far from good, like with almost any LCD. If you buy an LCD you must always take that into account.

Overall, this was by far the best electronic purchase of my life. The 37w3 does deliver and never disappoints. Kudos!

Lacks a scaling feature you might want.

Bugsi from Bay Area, CA on 11/20/2006

Definitely a great monitor and a great price. Everything everyone else said, x2. But one thing to beware of that isn't advertised: If you watch a 4:3 program that is broadcast widescreen letterbox (black bars above and below on a 4:3 monitor, like Battlestar Galactica), this monitor does not have a scaling feature to scale that letterboxed 4:3 widescreen to fit the monitor's screen. It does have stretch scaling to stretch 4:3 to widescreen (Makes circles look like ovals, and makes people look squat and fat), but that is not the same as scaling up a letterbox 4:3 to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio of this monitor. You *can* find this feature in more expensive monitors, so if you want that feature, this monitor won't do it.

Excellent TV. Great Service from Crutchfield

William from Houston, TX on 11/17/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Westinghouse LVM-37w3 arrived yesterday. The delivery comany called in advance, arrived on time, brought the TV into my living room, unpacked it, and then placed it just where I asked. They seemed surprised that I wanted to wire it up myself, so I would say overall that the "white glove" service from Crutchfield lived up to its reputation.

I had shopped around and probably could have purchased it for about $100-150 cheaper, however I felt far more comfortable buying from Crutchfield given their excellent customer service.

Setting up the LVM-37w3 was very easy. I connected the HDMI port on the Time Warner HD-DVR unit to the HDMI port on the TV, switched on the TV, and hit the "HDMI" input button on the remote. Sound and picture arrived instantly, and when I changed to one of the HD channels we receive on TWCs digital network, the picture expanded to fit the entire screen.

By the way, I had read various reports that the remote was sluggish and problematical. For me, it was fast and responsive, so perhaps they have listened to the complaints and fixed it!

The picture quality is outstanding - we watched a science / nature program about coral reefs in 1080i HD. Unbelievable clarity, depth and vividness of color. Next, I connected the DVD via component video (yes, we have an older DVD player). Again, excellent picture quality and resolution.

We watched some standard (non-digital, non-HD) TV content, with a mixed bag of results. Some good, some OK, and some not-so-good, but I think this was more the fault of the TWC DVR box than the TV.

In summary, very happy with the TV and Crutchfield. Now, which DVD player should I upgrade to?

Great value for the money

Greg from San Jose, CA on 11/8/2006

I ordered from Crutchfield several weeks ago, and the first unit arrived damaged, so called Crutchfield and wihout any hestitation they sent a new replacement to me. I hooked the TV up last night to my two DirecTV DVRS, an older model non-HD TIVO and the newer 1080i HD unit, via S-Video and Component connections respectively. Hookup was a breeze as was setup. Westinghouse put the connectors on side mounted panels behind the screen, which makes cable runs and access so much easier than straight off the back, or worse, on the underside of the rear panel. On screen setup was simple and not an overload of bells and whistles.

I viewed saved programs from both DVRs, and quality was definitely acceptable on the HD content. The non-HD had as expected a lot more pixelation depending on the source station I recorded it from. The onscreen guide and animated style content was crisp and definitely stood out visually. Action/moving content displayed well and the screen is more than bright enough at 1000:1

When I had viewed this TV in the store, you could see a difference from say the Sony Bravia and the Sharp Aquos, but they wanted $3K vs $1399 for a 1080p resolution model. For the $$ for an LCD the choice is a no brainer. For gamers especially this TV would rock.

I recommend it for the cost sensitive buyer and rate the TV overall as a 4.5. I need to hook up an HDMI cable to see if the display performs better with a direct Digital connection.

A fantastic television at an incredible price

Chris from Greensboro, NC on 11/3/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this television for several reasons, namely the price point, the ratings, and the fact that it is a 1080p monitor. And I have to say, it is worth every penny. First of all, the delivery from Crutchfield was quick, and went flawlessly. Hookup was a breeze, and before I knew it, I was watching DVDs. I really like the side mounted inputs on this unit; they run along both sides of the spine, and it makes seeing what you are doing much easier. It does not have a coax cable input, which I found strange at first, but I guess if you are buying a 1080p monitor, you are probably running a digital box with component or HDMI, so I can understand that. Also, there is only 1 HDMI input, but if you have a receiver with HDMI switching, it negates that potential problem. I popped The Incredibles into my Denon DVD-2910, and went to the THX optimizer to get at least a basic calibration done, and the results were fantastic. This TV has a superb picture, especially through an upconversion DVD player. One note; I did purchase a Samsung DVD player which upconverts to 1080p, but was unable to tell any difference from my 1080i Denon player. In fact, the Denon looked better. In the owner's manual, which is pretty basic, it says that 720p and 1080i signals are output as 1080p, so I am assuming that the TV does some sort of upconversion internally. I am not sure, but that is the way it sounds, and in comparing the two different DVD players, that seems to be the case. The results are stunning. Overall, I highly recommend this TV. If you are sitting on the fence as I was, buy it. I can guarantee you won't be sorry.

John from Chicago, Il on 10/5/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this TV last week. I have it hooked up to my HD cable box through a HDMI cable. The picture on HD is flawless. I find myself watching programs I have no interest in just to see the picture on the screen. Baseball games look life-like and natural. This is the best TV for the money hands down.

Crutchfield service when ordering was great. I placed my order on a Thursday afternoon and had my TV by Tuesday. That's fast especially since it is free.

CANT WAIT FOR BLU-RAY HDDVD (1080P)IF IT IS AS GOOD AS DISH NETWORK-VOOM(1080I)--THANKS CRUTCHFIELD!!!!.

Amazing LCD! Get this set if you're looking for a 37" 1080p TV/LCD!

Afshan from Davis, CA on 8/31/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After going to 5-6 different electronic stores and checking out the various brands of televisions they had on display, I was left wanting more. The vast majority of them were 720p and the ones that were 1080p cost an arm and a leg and the picture wasn't impressive enough to justify the cost. So I decided to go online and see what people were recommending and that's when I came across the Westinghouse LVM-37W3 and was amazed when I read it's specs: 8 ms refresh, 2 DVI inputs, HDMI, Component and best of all it was a great price!

None of my local stores had one available so I asked other owners about this set and not a single one had anything negative to say about it. I decided to shop around online and came across Crutchfield. I looked up their ratings on www.resellerratings.com and noticed they had a fantastic rating (and others that shopped with them had nothing but praise) so I went for it--I'm glad I did because the service was excellent and the television is breathtaking!

Two weeks later and I'm still amazed by this LCD/TV. I have my PC hooked up to it via DVI (getting a Comcast HD box + xbox 360 tomorrow) and Battlefield 2 never looked better! There is absolutely NO ghosting that I can see, the contrast is beautiful, colors are saturated and true to life and the adjustable brightness is a great feature (I use it at 2-3 brightness out of 5). This set is one of the best kept secrets out there and those of us fortunate enough to find out about it and purchase one are truly part of a lucky exclusive club. Put it this way, the picture quality of this set easily rivals top name brands like Samsung and Toshiba but it only costs a fraction of the price.

Awesome Monitor

Steve from Dallas TX on 5/31/2006

Unfreaking believable! I plugged this directly into my home PC right out of the box.
1 AC connection to the wall.
1 DVI connection from my PC.
Side by side with my LCD monitor for my laptop and my 19" LCD from my PC it's a crisper more colorful image by a landslide. My PC automatically recognized the W3 and wham, 1920x1080 like nobody's business. DVD Movies are great the HD programming OTA is amazing. White comes out so crystal clear it hurts. Unfortunately standard cable looks like trash compared to the digital signals. All the analog defects in the signal are detailed and visible on this monitor. High Speed movement doesn't seem to be an issue even when playing games like Battlefield 2 . Color, Contrast and Black are all above expectation. What an awesome buy. Aquous eat your heart out.
Nice monitor

Rob from Eagle, Id on 5/6/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this on 5/2/06. Very simple to setup and operate. Once I got my DVD player and Satalite configured for 16:9, it looked awesome. Only issue found is that when plugging in my PC, I am not able to get the resolution 1920X1080 to fit on the screen. It shows about 90% and what it shows is very sharp. Have called Westinghouse to try and figure out why it is not working. Tried current graphics drivers, no luck. For now, using 1280X960. Not sure if issue is with my graphics card or the monitor. Still too early to tell. DVD's are awesome on it.
