For most people, 1080p resolution is the number one must-have feature in a 42" TV. For many sports fans, a close second is 120Hz refresh rate. It lets you see sports and other high-speed action video with much less motion blur than TVs with no anti-blur technology. The 42LN5400's LED backlight beats fluorescent backlights hands-down when it comes to picture contrast, for shadows that are deep and dark and whites that are brilliant.
Too many people settle for a sub-par TV picture because the settings for contrast, color, etc. can be hard to find and/or tricky to use. LG's Picture Wizard II cuts through the confusion with easy-to-use adjustments and a quick self-calibration feature. The well-designed menu guides you through basic adjustments with "recommended" settings. For more precise adjustments, explore the "expert mode," which includes test patterns based on professional video calibration.

nice color & easy adjust
the picture does not seem very crisp on HD. the 'trumotion' is apparently defaulted to on and cant be adjusted. the sound is very poor. i wasnt planning to buy sound bar but will have to now. also the base does not rotate which i didnt realize when i ordered it.
Cons: picture sound non rotating base
The TV is really nice - and I find that the sound is not too bad either. Worked out well for the super bowl.
This LED TV has a very clear picture and excellent motion clarity.
TV arrived in good time and good order at an unbeatable price. Set-up was easy even for an aging techno-klutz. The image is fine, quality of work--solidity, stand, balance, inputs--excellent. Adjusting settings was easy to achieve the image qualities we prefer, color balance, intensity, et al. Sound is better than expected. Only quibble would be that another input or two might be helpful for dvd, vhs, satellite, analog-digital converted antenna, laptop ....
Pros: Image construction, settings adjustments.
So far, it works well. Color and clarity is way better than the insignia tv of same price I bought less than a year ago.
Pros: Good clarity, speed in channel and video track, easy set up
Cons: no headphone jack. Built in speakers need help
Clear picture great sound
Great Product. The service was great and it was shipped quickly.
Pros: Excellent picture. Great features that are easy to navigate through. Excellent product.
Cons: Can't think of any.
I would have to say that for the price this is by far the best TV on the market. It's obviously 1080p capable and it also gets OTA HD broadcasts! I don't even need an antenna where I am. The other rooms in my house have cable boxes...but the line in the room I have this TV in is just a regular coaxial cable and the prime network channels all come in HD (FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC) so for football I don't even need a box. Unfortunately this means no NFL Network and NO HD for ESPN but oh well. Why pay $8/mo for an HD box? Not worth it. Back to the TV - Optical Digital Out works perfectly! I have it hooked up to my surround sound in my room. This size TV is perfect for a bedroom for sure. Anyone that thinks this size TV is good for a living room is sorely mistaken. You need a high quality at minimum 50-60" so you can see it from the kitchen as most people's houses are like that. I have my laptop hooked up via HDMI as we speak and it works perfectly. If you tell the TV (using the remote) that it's a PC, it won't chop off the 4 corners of the PC screen that always happens when hooking it up to a TV!! BIG PLUS there. You can always change the settings PER channel about brightness. A cool thing for the TV itself so you can listen at a lower volume without the surround system THROUGH the TV is the "Clear Voice" where you can turn up the volume on people talking in TV shows rather than turning up everything!
Pros: 42" LED-LCD TV. 1080p. Optical Digital Out. PC mode. Various Visual and Sound Modes. EXCELLENT quality. Easy Setup.
Cons: Only 2 HDMI Ports. Does not swivel (Who Cares?). No WiFi.
Excellent TV. Perfect image. Easy to set. If you watch sports this is the TV for you. The best price for a TV, Crutchfield you did a perfect job as always.
Pros: Excellent images in sports. Price unbeatable.
I had been using an older tube 20" Sony in the bedroom for some time and decided that I needed to upgrade. I had recently purchased an LG 60" plasma from a local dealer for the living room so I decided on a LG 42" LED for the bedroom. I priced it at the local dealer but they did not have one in stock. I decided to try Crutchfield, having dealt with them in the past. Crutchfield's price was much lower than the local dealer but they did not have one either, but did have one open box for $50 off. I had it in three days and has quite happy with it except for some marks on the screen that were only visible when there was no input or there was a dark scene, like a night scene. I called Crutchfield Tech Support and spoke to Devon. I described what I had and asked if I should be concerned that it would become more serious in the future. He immediately advised that they were shipping me a new television. The new TV arrived in three days and is perfect. It connected easily to my Directv Genie system and has a terrific picture. I am very happy, both with the LG and with Crutchfield and would recommend both. I now feel that I have just as good a television in the bedroom as I have in the living room. I have ordered a sound bar for this TV because I have Pandora and need a little better sound quality for the music. The living room TV is connected to the stereo there. If it were not for the music, the speakers in the TV would have been fine for normal programs.
Pros: light and easy to set up and connect, great picture
Cons: most of the owner's manual is on a computer CD and is a bit unhandy to use that way
Picture is prefect. TV is surprisingly light weight and easy to maneuver. Fits perfectly on the stand we needed to use. Hook-up is straightforward. The only minus is weak sound quality which I expect from all flat-panel TV's without auxiliary sound equipment. Crutchfield's ordering process and delivery are unbeatable. We're very pleased with this purchase.
Pros: great picture quality
Cons: weak sound production
Our 32" Sony CRT stopped working, just like that. So I researched TVs that would be able to hook up to our older Direct TV Tivo, fit in the space we had available, and most importantly, it had to come from Crutchfield. Crutchfield has the BEST technical support of any company I have ever dealt with. The sound on this TV is great. For the most part, I don't use the closed caption anymore. And the picture quality is superb. We LOVE this TV!
Pros: Sound and picture quality are superb!
Cons: None yet.
Image quality is good, but requires some tweaking to get it right. It's not going to win awards in this category, but does fine for the price. Picture adjustments can be saved for each input. I have this TV mounted in my master bedroom where we are watching most often in darkened conditions- the "brightness" of the black level on a blank screen is noticeable in the dark, but this is true of most LCD/LED type sets and isn't bothersome. I have it paired with a streaming Sony BD player and an HD cable box, both connected via HDMI. Of note, the HDMI inputs (only 2) are in different places (1 is on the side). Don't expect to connect more than 2 HDMI devices. There are some buttons behind the R edge of the screen for direct control, but don't see how they would be of use unless the TV were on a rotating stand (which mine isn't).
My new LG 42" flat screen is excellent! I went from a 32" Sony tube TV to the LG and I was wondering what took me so long to make the change. Plenty of inputs and the controls are very easy to use. The color palette is outstanding. My son loves to play is WII on the LG. This is my 2nd TV that I have purchased from Crutchfields and I am extremely happy.
Pros: Excellent picture, remote well layed out, easy set up.
Cons: none yet.

Direct-Lit LED Technology: Direct-Lit LED backlight technology bridges the gap between lower-cost CCFL (fluorescent) LCD TVs and newer edge-lit LED-LCD TVs. LG's Direct-Lit LED-LCD televisions feature LEDs positioned all the way across the LCD panel's back plane (instead of along the side). Unlike "Full-Array" backlight LED-LCD televisions that also feature LEDs positioned along the LCD panel's back plane, the Direct-Lit LED technology uses fewer LEDs and do not offer local dimming. Since there are fewer LEDs, the LCD panel's back plane must be moved farther away from the screen to provide adequate light coverage across the LCD panel, making the TV much deeper than an edge-lit LED-LCD television. Direct-Lit LED backlight technology offers a better picture and is more energy efficient than previous CCFL (fluorescent) LCD televisions, though it requires a much larger cabinet design than newer edge-lit LED-LCD TVs.
TruMotion 120Hz: TruMotion 120Hz provides clear, smoother images, even during fast action scenes crating a more crisper picture. TruMotion 120Hz technology lets you see sports, video games, and high-speed action with virtually no motion blur; letting the LED-LCD TV keep up with your fast- moving entertainment.
Triple XD Engine w/ 1080P Resolution: The LED-LCD TV utilizes LG's exclusive Triple XD Engine video processing system for crisp images and rich, vibrant colors. The LG LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p).

Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the LG TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 2 port. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.

Picture Wizard II (Picture Control): This feature lets you adjust the picture quality of the original image. This feature takes the guesswork out of picture adjustments.

AV Modes: AV Mode is three preset picture and audio settings. It allows the viewer to quickly switch between common audio/video settings. It includes Cinema, Game, Off (standard) Modes. With AV Mode, you can easily select from one of these three picture modes to enjoy an optimized picture and sound experience.

This TV is programmed to memorize the caption/text mode which was last set when you turned the power off.
Parental Control: Parental Control can be used to block specific channels, ratings, and other viewing sources (external input block). The Parental Control Function is used to block program viewing based on the ratings sent by the broadcasting station. The default setting is to allow all programs to be viewed. Viewing can be blocked by choosing the type of the program and the categories. It is also possible block a specific channel. The Parental Control function is protected by a 4-digit user password.
ENERGY STAR Certified w/ Energy Saving Feature: Earning the ENERGY STAR means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. For TVs, it means they save energy both in Standby and On modes. ENERGY STAR qualified TVs use about 30% less energy than standard units. The Energy Saving feature helps to save electric power by adjusting the screen brightness.
Timers: The LED-LCD TV employs On, Off, and Sleep Timer functions.
IR Remote Control: The supplied IR remote control is designed to only operate the LG LED-LCD television and SIMPLINK connected components.
SIMPLINK: SIMPLINK allows you to control and play other LG AV devices connected with HDMI cable without additional cables and settings, from the television's remote control. SIMPLINK provides the following remote functions.

Sorry, Ed, but we purchased this tv for our son as a graduation gift, so we do not have the set in the house. Hope you found an answer from a more knowledgable person! [ THOMAS Apr 08, 2014 ]

Im not sure my friend i never tried that!! [ AARON E Apr 05, 2014 ]
There is no headphone jack. The only audio output is digital audio. However, if you are using a cable box to feed the TV you may be able to hook up to the cable box. That is what we did with our Time Warner cable box. [ Larry Apr 05, 2014 ]
After about 3 months our LG set quit working completely. The service person was able to repair it on site quickly and indicated that it was a recurrent cabling problem in the power circuitry. It was covered completely under warranty. Apart from that we continue to be very pleased with the color, brightness, and sound quality. I do not expect any further issues with the set. [ Larry Apr 05, 2014 ]
I choose the LG because after talking to my son-in-law who is a some what expert on electronics he said the LG was highly rated. When I spoke to the Crutchfield sales person, he said he has had one for 5 yrs. and no problems. I had been to a club store and was looking at buying a Visio but a friend of mine said the Visio is returned more than any other t.v. The price I got from Crutchfield was the best deal which included free shipping. I also liked the spec's of the LG. I also own a Sony Briva and the LG was to be a second T.V. My LG has a great picture even where the T.V. is located I have a sun reflection on the screen at certain times of the day and the picture is still very good. I hope this helps. [ CHARLES C Jan 21, 2014 ]
I have always purchased Sony televisions and have been quite pleased with them. I was looking for a smaller TV or my bedroom and the LG was the perfect size ( 42" ) and I heard good things about LG during the past year. I am quite pleased with the LG. The picture is clear and bright and I have had not problem. and the set is easily programed. I would grade my satisfaction as very pleased it has met all of my expectations. [ JAMES E Jan 21, 2014 ]
Considered Samsung, Visio, & some lesser brands. LG & Samsung typically score at the top of a leading consumer publication surveys. This TV was priced very competitively and had good customer satisfaction scores. [ Viperstick Jan 21, 2014 ]
I think I looked at them all, spending about 4 months. I had bought an Insignia w/ 60 Hz processer and didnt like the picture shadows or blurr in the fast action shots. I paid $430 for that. I looked at the sansum but for basically the same TV they want $200 more. My brother bought one and said the LG was every bit as good a picture as his. I also bought an off brand for the RV but the jury's still out on if I wasted my money on that. A friend had bought an LG 60" 120Hz and I was impressed with the picture and function. He likes alot of soccer and sports and I noticed there was no blurring whatsoever. When I saw the LG 42" for what was it, $450 after rebate? ...I was ready to buy. So far, except that it's not internet compatible, it's the best TV I've owned. I would recommend it. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong. Hope I gave a complete and satisfactory answer that helps you make a good choice. Good luck JJ [ JACK Jan 21, 2014 ]
Based upon reviews in multiple places I determined that the LG would have a wider viewing angle and better built in sound that the comparable Samsung LED TVs. I made sure to select an LED TV. Now that we have used it for over a month we are very pleased with its color rendition, sound quality and sound volume. As an engineer with patents in digital color science I am quite particular about color and image quality. I have been very pleased. [ Larry Jan 21, 2014 ]
Hi Jack, I didn't do a ton of research. I have one other LG TV and have been happy with it, and I trust Crutchfield and the brands they carry. So far, so good. Easy to set up, great picture, affordable price. [ CRAIG L Jan 21, 2014 ]
I'll admit that it was solely the price. I also considered a Samsung, but this one was lower. they seem about the same in quality. [ ANTHONY A Jan 21, 2014 ]
Vizio, Samsung, and Sony. Wanted a basic - not smart -TV at a good price. Not used as a "main" TV. Chose the LG because of Crutchfield. Have bought TV's here before and would not buy elsewhere. Trusted the fact that they carried the LG. [ DAVID Jan 21, 2014 ]
Over Samsund because a friend had one and was happy with it. It was just about what we expexcted. Not outstanding bu t good value--even better now. Too many remotes and buttons not accessible. No "manual for dummies' like me. [ CHARLES Jan 21, 2014 ]
