Our take on the LG BP-620

The remote control that's tough to lose This player may have two or more remotes — one comes in the box, and the others may be in your pocket, purse or backpack. Thanks to a free LG media app download, you can use your iPhone®, or compatible Android™ phone to control the BP-620 using Wi-Fi. The iPad® and lots of other tablet computers will work, too. Either way, you get an easy-to-use remote control that doesn't usually wind up between the sofa cushions.

3D movie viewing and more

The LG BP-620 is 3D-ready. Just connect it to your 3D-capable TV and you can enjoy the theater experience at home. Standard Blu-ray movies look pristine and deliver that eye-popping clarity and detail you crave. Plus the '620 also upconverts your regular DVDs, so that even older movies will look amazing on your screen. We also love how quickly this player loads Blu-ray discs, so you can get on with the show.

Product performs exactly as advertised. Excellent picture, easy to use remote and clear connections. I do find in inconsiderate that the instruction manual in on a DVD. I am not going to print 50 pages of material and do not have my computer in the same room as the LG BP-620. A "small" start up sheet a'la Apple would be appreciated.

LG BP620 a Great buy!

Craig H. from Wyoming, IL on 2/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit after my Samsung kept freezing up playing BluRay discs. So far it has worked flawlessly! The menu to get to Netflix, Pandora, etc. is a bit "unintuitive" (they're under the 'premium' section) but once there they load quickly and I'm ready to go. Living in a rural area I do not have a "fast" internet connection (3.7MBps at best) but Netflix has never frozen yet. Movie discs load speeds are what I'd call "normal" (20-30 secs.) but, to me, that's no big deal. The remote is well laid out and easy to read, but I use a Harmony 650 universal remote that has the LG BP620 in it's database so the LG remote is largely unused. There is one nice feature listed that I've yet to try out however. When a music CD is inserted this unit is supposed to access the Gracenote music database to display the info on my TV screen. I have yet to try this out but it seems to be an excellent idea. I'll repost after I look into if it works or not. All in all this is a fantastic unit that was a double-packed box... TWO DAYS after I phoned in the order to Crutchfield!!! You can't beat that.

Pros: Internet programs, Netflix menu is well displayed with good icons, nice remote.

Cons: LG apps are useless, Large "3D" emblem on front is a bit unsightly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ability to play .avi, .Xvid & .mkv format files makes using a Win 7 DLNA movie server super convenient. Reformatting to .mp4 format that many players require is just too slow. WiFi works well and was easy to set up. Web browser is significantly better than the Sony BDPS590 (which I returned to get the LG) as is the YouTube player. 3D playing is fine.

Pros: Good price. Probably the best web browser in it's price class. Easy setup. Flexible file formats makes using DLNA movie server easy to setup.

Cons: No support for Amazon. If LG doesn't release an app update to fix this I'll connect up my Roku to fix this glaring omission.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy hookup, good apps. If you check out reviews at Cructfied and elsewhere online you'll learn that performance is very good and one of the best in price range. Very pleased with this player.

Pros: It has built-in Wi-Fi and 3D compatibility.

Cons: Does not have Amazon Instant streaming or dedicated buttons for Netflix but not an issue for me.

Great Purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After spending a couple of days doing some research online this was the Blu-ray player I decided to purchase and what a great purchase it has been. I hooked it up to a Samsung plasma TV, a Yamaha receiver and everything went smoothly. The reason that I rated it only 4 stars is because it is my first Blu-ray player so I have nothing to compare it to. Blu-ray discs and DVD's have both loaded quickly and without any stalling or jitters. It instantly recognized the Wi-Fi and has played each of the Apps fine. Taking all of that into consideration plus the price, free shipping and excellent customer service from Crutchfield it is exactly what I was looking for.

Great device for the money!

PresBob from Rockbridge Baths, VA on 12/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The LG BP-620 3D Blu Ray player is a great machine, and especially for its very reasonable cost. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but the controls are easy, the remote works MUCH better than my previous Blu Ray player (by another manufacturer) and I've had no instances of it stalling while playing, a problem I had frequently with my previous player (only a couple of years old but more expensive). I use it often to play internet radio, e.g., Pandora, and it is excellent for that as well.

Pros: Easy to set up and dependable to use

Cons: None that I've found yet

LG BP-620

dj from Ann Arbor, MI on 12/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up and easy to use. The only problem is that it freezes up from time to time and to get it back working it has to be disconnected from the power supply and reconnected. It does this when playing a disc as well as when operating on line with Netflix. Once disconnected from the power supply and reconnected it work fine again. this has happened three times over the two weeks I have had the piece of equipment. And, I forgot... second problem the software provided in the box refuses installation on a Mac.

Pros: Easy to install and use.

Cons: Freezes up. Software provided does not install on a Mac.

Everything I expected

DaveB from Minnesota on 12/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The LG BP-620 is just what we expected. We paired this with a LG television and it connected with no problems. It also recognized and connected into our WIFI seamlessly. Software updates completed smoothly and it is working fine. This was a great value for the sale price and we may get another.

Pros: Both the player and remote pairs easily with an LG television. Menus are relatively intuitive.

Cons: May not be the best choice to work with other brands of televisions. I suggest considering a model that is from the same manufacturer.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BP-620 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, LG may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested Blu-ray player contained software/firmware version BD7.392.00.00.C with an immediate update for software/firmware version BD7.574.00.00.C (as of 8/10/2012). Visit LG's Support Site for the latest firmware/software updates.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

Video File Support: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player supports the following video files recorded onto disc.

Disc Type File Format File Extension
BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW XVID, MPEG1 SS, H.264/MPEG-4 AVCHD, MPEG2 PS, MPEG2 TS, VC-1 SM (WMV3) .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mkv, .mp4, .asf, .wmv, .m4v (DRM free), .vob, .3gp

Audio File Support: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player supports the following audio files recorded onto disc.

Disc Type File Format Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, FLAC 32-320 kbps(MP3), 32-192 kbps (WMA) 16-48 kHz (MP3), 32-48 kHz (WMA)

Photo File Support: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player supports the following photo files recorded onto disc.

Disc Type File Format Recommended Size
BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW JPEG, PNG, GIF less than 4,000 x 3,000 x 24-bit/pixel; or 3,000 x 3,000 x 32-bit/pixel

Video Features

Video Outputs: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player features one high-definition HDMI output and one standard-definition composite video output.

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The BP620's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.
  • Composite Video: The composite video output will only output 480i, no matter the source.
Note: This player does not offer a component or S-video output.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BP620 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

DVD Upscaling: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BP620 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

3D Ready: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BP620 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

x.v.Color: The BP620 supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect Ratio: You can select which aspect ratio the player outputs according to your television's aspect ratio.

  • 16:9 Original: Select when a 16:9 wide TV is connected; the 4:3 picture is displayed with an original 4:3 aspect ratio, with black bars appearing at the left and right sides.
  • 16:9 Full: Select when a 16:9 wide TV is connected; the 4:3 picture is adjusted horizontally (in a linear proportion) to fill the entire screen.
  • 4:3 Letter Box: Select when a standard 4:3 TV is connected; displays theatrical images with masking bars above and below the picture.
  • 4:3 Pan Scan: Select when a standard 4:3 TV is connected; displays pictures cropped to fill your TV screen. Both sides of the picture are cut off.

Picture Mode: You can adjust the Contrast, Brightness, Color, and Sharpness of the Blu-ray player's video output.

Audio Features

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The LG BP620 can decode the following Dolby Digital/DTS surround formats; Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via optical or HDMI input. You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Optical) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

Dynamic Range Control: This function allows you to listen to a movie (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Dolby TrueHD content) at a lower volume without losing clarity of sound. The player's DRC function can be set to Auto, On, or Off.

Down Sampling: 192 kHz and 96 kHz digital signals can be converted to 48 kHz for components not compatible with higher sampling rates.

Audio Outputs: The LG BP620 Blu-ray disc player features an optical (toslink) digital audio output and one analog RCA stereo audio output.

  • Digital Audio Outputs: The Blu-ray disc player features a optical (toslink) digital audio output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

USB/Internet Functions

CD-Audio to USB Recording: You can record one desired track or all of the tracks from a CD-Audio disc to an inserted USB storage device. CD audio tracks are converted to MP3 format (128/192/320kbps) and saved to your connected USB device.

Network Connection (Wired or Wireless): The LG Blu-ray player can be connected to your home network via its Ethernet (LAN) port or built-in WiFi. If both options are available in your network, the wired Ethernet connection is recommended. Either network connection offers access to your PC movie/photo/music files & online LG Apps.

Note: A 10 Base-T or 100 Base-TX LAN port is required for connection to this TV. Use a standard LAN cable with this TV (Cat5 or better with a RJ45 connector). The included wireless network adapter operates at 2.4 GHz radio frequencies, which are also used by other household devices.

Convenience Features

Start Up/Play Back Time: The LG BP620 Blu-ray player has a start-up time of approximately 7.5 seconds. It takes approximately 23.5 seconds for a Blu-ray disc to begin playback.

Note: The Start Up/Play Back Time tests were started with the Blu-ray player initially turned off & in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player's Home Menu screen appeared. The Play Back Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

On-Screen Display: The LG BP620 provides an OSD via its HDMI or composite video output. The on-screen text can be set to English, French, Spanish, or various other languages. The unit also features a front-panel display (green text).

Last Scene Memory: This unit memorizes the last scene from the last disc that is viewed. The last scene remains in memory even if you remove the disc from the unit or switch off the unit. If you load a disc that has the scene memorized, the scene is automatically recalled. The last scene memory function for a previous disc is erased once a different disc is played.

Parental Control: The LG BP620 offers Parental Control settings to limit BD (0-255) and DVD (1-8) discs according to the age of the users. The control settings are protected by a custom 4-digit password.

Auto Power Off: The BP620's screen saver appears when you leave the player in Stop mode for approximately five minutes. If you set this option to "On", the unit automatically turns off within 20 minutes since the Screen Saver is displayed. Set this option to "Off" to leave the screen saver until the unit is operated by the user.

Remote Control

IR Remote Control: The LG BP620 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the Blu-ray player. The remote is pre-programmed to control basic functions (Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, AV Input, Channel Up/Down, & Mute) of select LG flat-panel TVS, and can be programmed to control other manufacture televisions (Zenith, GoldStar, Samsung, Sony, Hitachi).

SIMPLINK: Some functions of this player can be controlled by your LG TV's remote control when this unit and your LG SIMPLINK compatible TV are connected through a HDMI connection. You can control Blu-ray player playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Skip Previous/Next, and Stop) from your LG TV's remote control. The Blu-ray player can also be set to automatically power On/Off with your LG SIMPLINK compatible TV.

Note: To operate SIMPLINK, an HDMI cable over Version 1.3 with CEC function should be used. This Blu-ray player may work with devices with HDMI-CEC support, but only devices with the "SIMPLINK" logo are fully supported.
