I recently took the 4K plunge and upgraded my living-room TV to an LG OLED 4K TV. When I hooked it up, all I had was my old 1080p movie collection. The picture looked great, but I still wanted something in full 4K to truly test my new screen's performance. The LG UP970 4K Blu-ray player can help scratch this "new TV itch." It will play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs — the absolute best-quality video source available today.
The LG UP970's front-panel USB port lets you play music or videos from a thumb drive or Android phone.
Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range) allow compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image. HDR content makes for serious eye candy on my new OLED TV — it stands out even among other, stellar-looking 4K videos. Watching sunlight peek over a mountain and spill over a lush landscape with true-to-life shading is really a sight to see.
And the LG UP970 supports the required HDR 10 format, and will support the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format with a future firmware update. Dolby Vision is one of the reasons I ended up going with the LG OLED. Dolby's dynamic system can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis.
This player has built-in support for the highest-quality surround sound formats, like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS Master Audio™. It also plays Dolby Atmos®-encoded discs. You simply set the HDMI audio output to "bitstream" when connected to an Atmos-capable receiver.
There are two HDMI outputs: one for sending audio to your home theater receiver and one for video directly to your TV. That means you can still play sound through receivers that don't have a free HDMI input that's HDCP 2.2 compatible. You can also use an optical digital connection to get surround sound from the player to your receiver.
Along with playing discs, you can use the UP970 to stream Netflix® and YouTube. These are the two video services that offer the most 4K content available right now. And this player's dual-band Wi-Fi gives you the strong connection needed for streaming 4K. (We recommend having an internet speed of 20Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)
great product easy to set up and use.

Average Customer Review(s):
great product easy to set up and use.
Works well, but when playing a 4k disc it sounds like your neighbor is using a leaf blower. Distracting during quiet scenes. Not sure but I may return it.
Pros: Plays BR and 4k well.
Cons: Sounds like a leaf blower on 4k discs
I purchased this with the 55" LG OLED because I wanted something to play HDR 4K BluRays and this was available at a discount. The picture quality is outstanding. I like that it supports the same HDR formats as the LG OLED. I won't be using this for streaming, so I cannot speak to that feature. It works. It is the brand as my TV. It was a decent price. I cannot beat that.
Pros: HDR support Great picture quality
Cons: Price is still a little high on the HDR 4K players
Minimal use so far, but the picture looks amazing on new OLED.
Pros: Easy setup
Cons: none so far
i have personally evaluated most of the available 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players in a quest for the best picture quality :: this unit, especially in Dolby Vision performance is unequalled; without a doubt :: therefore i look forward to more Dolby Vision releases/titles becoming available :: HDR(10) performance is another matter entirely (it's not the fault of the player, as it's HDR performance is obviously excellent, but comparing Dolby Vision & HDR(10) is quite simple and the more i watch HDR(10) content, the less i am able to tolerate it to the point of considering not purchasing content unless it is Dolby Vision - for myself, it's significant :: audio quality is also very good, seemingly clearer than other players, which while obvious, is perhaps more difficult for others to pick up on; meaning you need a perceptive ear, but it's improved audio performance is also quite obvious :: watching DVD/HD Blu-ray content (movies/tv shows) are spectacular, looking significantly better than on any HD Blu-ray player in my personal experience (i have compared many throughout the years) :: so, it's audio/video performance is excellent playing all video formats without exception, the raised buttons on the front panel are very appreciated/convenient to use, while the remote works fine, it's not being back lighting and having a narrow IR range is somewhat inconvenient to use, generally a very nice user experience and i continue to enjoy it :: i liked it so much that i purchased two
Pros: picture quality (especially Dolby Vision) :: the picture quality i experience is easily obvious as the best picture quality i have seen in my entire lifetime :: front panel controls (they are very convenient to use as they extent from the front panel, therefore are very easy to identify and use by touch) :: i consider it a very affordable high performance universal video player with great audio performance as well
Cons: remote (no back lighting) & has a restrictive IR performance (perhaps 15-degrees - subjectively) :: within it's IR range it works fine, it's just that you have to make certain that you point carefully for a response :: otherwise it is fine :: drive noise (some units have a noise issue and would need to be exchanged for a acceptable unit :: however, if not a problematic unit, although not the quietest, are acceptable and are without issues)
replaced a older blu-ray player . new 4k tv, wanted 4k player as well. was on sale for 1/2 the original price , free shipping , good deal. player works well , very quiet . outstanding picture. biggest difference i notice between blu-ray and 4k is the audio. it just seems to really pop , big sounds out of all the speakers. heard background sounds that never heard before. my only complaint and it appears to be that way with all the new players is that there is no display anymore, just a small light.
Works very well with our new tv. Bought this model for compatibility.
Pros: Does what you would expect.
Great Blu-ray player. We watched The Martian in 4K and it was amazing. Very easy to set up and to use. Plays older formats well.
Pros: Easy to setup, great play back
Cons: Can be tricky with Sound bar when switching between disk formats.
Does an excellent job with my LG OLED TV. Instruction manual with both TV and 4K player could be better and more detailed though. These are functionally very capable units, but can be complicated to use.
In August, LG pushed an update that enabled Dolby Vision. It was big news back then; Major tech sites like CNET and Engadget ran stories about it. LG then quietly rolled that Dolby Vision support back in the next update. Here it is now, November, and still no Dolby Vision update. LG is completely silent on the issue, though they still do advertise with an asterisk that Dolby Vision support will be coming with a future update. Many of us purchased this unit specifically because it "supported" Dolby Vision and cost half what the Oppo UDP-203 cost. Wish I would have stuck with my gut and purchased the Oppo. My wallet would be lighter, but at least I would have received what I paid for. Also, I'll add that my disc player is loud.
Pros: It is a fine BRD player if you're not looking for Dolby Vision.
Cons: No Dolby Vision and loud disc player
Easy to set up and works well. Has Netflix and YouTube but not the Cinema Now capability I had with my previous LG.
Loads fast, plays cd's without any issue. I watched Wonder Woman on 4k and it was like being in the theatre. Great so far
Pros: Delivers full 4k HDR
Cons: None so far
This Blue Ray DVD player works and performs as expected. The price was right too as Crutchfield had a great sale going.
Pros: Easy to operate and loads and plays movies quickly.
So far I am so pleased with this player it works great has not had any lock-ups like some do, has a quiet motor and plays everything I throw in it. the 2 HDMI ports really helped with my 3yr old 4k tv with the hookup situation. Overall you can't go wrong with a purchase of one of these players ,and with Crutchfield's great service reputation even if you had a problem they'll rise to the task and take care of it fast!! Thanks enjoy!!!
Pros: works well ,quiet, no lockups, plays well with others !
Cons: it wasn't free
Excellent player for the price. Native 4k and upconverted content is beautiful on my LG OLED.
FYI..... Picture quality is great, but the motor in the unit has a loud vibrating, whirling kind of noise when playing an Ultra HD Blu-ray disk. During a quiet dialogue scene, the noise is very noticeable. Playback of a regular Blu-ray or DVD disk does not create the noise. There are lots of similar noise reports on reviews of the UP970 on other sites.
Great 4K player. No problems so far.
The only player choices right now for Dolby Vision are LG and Oppo. Since the Oppo costs more than double, it was an easy choice. I took advantage of the separate HDMI connections to connect to my TV directly as well as a receiver for audio. The picture is great but that should be true of any 4k player and depends largely on the source. Like another reviewer mentioned, I'd seen comments on some other forums that the player could be noisy (particularly when first spinning up), but I didn't experience that at all.
Good sound and picture. The 4K version of Sully was amazing! I like the fact you can connect this player to your receiver via HDMI on the back of the player. Unit runs quietly. I also purchased the LG OLED 55 inch TV from my friends at Crutchfield. Both these units together work very well!
Pros: Picture Quality, Sound and ease of use
Great Blu-ray player. The first one wouldn't read any disks. I called Crutchfield and they determined unit was bad. They sent me a replacement that has worked fine. I am extremely satisfied with all of the features. It does everything I expected and more. The picture and sound are incredible. This is my first Blu-ray player and I was apprehensive about spending the money for this player. I read that this player could be quit noisy but so far it is very quiet.
Pros: close to 4k detail outstanding sound
I purchased the LG UP970 to provide a good 4K UHD source for my new LG OLED 4K UHD TV, because my TV supports HDR "Dolby Vision" so I have included this feature as part of the requirement for my search for the new 4K UHD player but I noticed the Sony & Samsung's 4K UHD players do not support this feature, so far I only know of 2 manufactures that makes players that supports "Dolby Vision" that is LG & OPPO. I decided to purchase this LG model from Crutchfield because Crutchfield announced on their web site that their LG UP970 supports "Dolby Vision" while the other online stores do not specifically publish that their UP970 unit supports this feature. If your TV supports HDR, be careful to pay attention to the "Dolby Vision" support because you don't want to let this new technology go to waste by using a player that does not support "Dolby Vision".

Audio Guidance: The UHD Blu-ray player will narrate some playback functions and menu settings to assist the visually impaired.
Auto Power Off: A screen saver appears when you leave the player in Stop mode for approximately 5 minutes. The unit will then automatically turn off within 15 minutes since the Screen Saver is displayed to save power.
IR Remote: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the Ultra HD Blu-ray player. You can also program the IR remote to control select brands of TVs (including LG, Sony, & Samsung).
SIMPLINK (HDMI CEC): Some functions of the UP970 can be controlled by your TV's remote control when the player is connected via HDMI to a SIMPLINK compatible LG TV or other brand of HDMI CEC compatible television. Controllable functions include Play, Pause, Scan, Skip, and Power Off.

Just to add some additional clarification, yes, generally requires 2 HDMI cables unless you have a 4k receiver. in order for 4k to work, the entire chain from disc to output needs to be 4k compatible. The multiple HDMI outputs for picture (which needs to be in 4k) and sound (which needs to run through your reciever to get surround sound but doesn't require 4k) are a workaround that LG (and some other BluRay players have built in). Unless you have a 4k receiver, you need 2 HDMI outputs if you want 4k picture and surround sound. Or you have to send sound to TV and reexport to receiver via a digital cable. [ Jeffrey Jul 31, 2017 ]
2 HDMI cables are required 1 from the Blu Ray to the Receiver and a second for the Blu Ray (out) to the HDMI2 Port to the TV. That is how I configured to my Onkyo Rec and Samsung UHD Television. Hope this helps. [ ERIK Jul 28, 2017 ]
Identify HDMI 1( Jack on the left) and HDMI 2 (Jack on the right) on the backside of the LG UP970 these jacks are labelled so look for them. Make sure the cable plugged into MDMI 1 is connected to your TV and HDMI 2 is connected to your receiver. These jacks are not interchangeable. This should resolve your problem. If not contact Crutchfield tech support for further assistance. Good luck! [ Peter Jul 28, 2017 ]
I have the same tv and the Onkyo 444 receiver. I plug the HDMI cable from the LG UP970 to the receiver. Still had some issues with sound and the LG tech had me run a digital optical cable from tv to receiver now everything works ok. It worked fine when I went from Player directly to the tv without the receiver (it was in repair). When I brought in the receiver is gets confusing. LG tech was helpful [ Troy Jul 28, 2017 ]
