Our take on the AudioQuest Diamondback

Each conductor has its own insulating air tube, which prevents information smearing better than foam insulation. An additional layer of shielding negates almost all electronic noise, for the cleanest signal possible.

Hear the difference these cables can make with your gear

AudioQuest's quality-built Diamondback analog audio cables transfer signals with minimal noise and signal loss. Each cable features three solid copper conductors to effectively eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound. And Audioquest uses a pure grade of copper in the conductors to minimize distortion.

High-quality construction

Solid connectors

Diamondback cables feature RCA connectors made of silver-plated copper. The connectors are fastened by cold welding — a process that uses high pressure and silver paste to minimize signal loss. By contrast, solder tends to impede the signal, and the heating of the copper conductor during soldering can negatively affect its performance.

Product Highlights:

From Skeptic To Believer

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't expect to hear much, if any, difference between my old AudioQuest Turquoise interconnects and these Diamondbacks. A good cable is a good cable, and the rest is marketing nonsense. Or so I thought. I definitely hear more detail, such as the breathing of a single flautist amongst an entire orchestra. Build quality is solid and I'm confident they will last a lifetime. Pretty nice aesthetically, too.

Pros: Good sound, good build quality, and good looks.

Cons: For me, a bit pricey at full retail, but that's subjective.

The Chain for Your Hardware

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You don't dock a boat with yarn, why should you connect your high end components with economy cables? I could definitely hear that last bit of "air" that added to the reality of the musical experience when I switched from an included patch cord set between my DAC and my Amp, and have since replaced all the cables on my system with Diamondback RCAs. The Diamondbacks between my turntable, preamp and amp had an even greater impact than that of the digital portion of my system. It was like removing several layers of fabric between me and my music. Digital files from an outboard DAC will have a more lively presence with Audioquest cables and Analog signals have an even greater impact. I could't be happier with the results.

Pros: Very well constructed, using silver at the interconnects fro greater signal conductivity and a beautiful and durable braided jacket for better appearance.

Cons: None, other than the heftier price you will pay for better quality sound.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Overview: This AudioQuest Diamondback product contains two 3-meter audio interconnect cables with male RCA connectors on each end. They are for connecting high-end audio sources to your amplifier or receiver.

Triple-Balanced Design: The Diamondback audio interconnect cables are Triple-Balanced, with three identical insulated conductors and a separate conductor under the foil shield. Two conductors are used together for the much higher potential across the negative connection, providing a substantial performance advantage. The shield is only attached at one end, providing total shield coverage without compromising the negative conducting path.

Solid Conductors: Diamondback interconnects use three 22-gauge solid conductors instead of stranded conductors. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in conventional cables are the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty harsh sound. Solid conductors produce less distortion, thus produce a very clean sound.

Metal: Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) has a very smooth and pure surface. Audioquest's proprietary metal processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. High-purity, low-oxide copper is kept soft, pure, and smooth as possible during the manufacturing process, resulting in a very low distortion PSC conductor.

Insulation: All of Diamondback's conductors are insulated using Polyethylene Air Tubes. Air absorbs virtually no energy (which could be stored and released as distortion), and Polyethylene is a low-loss material that causes very little interference or distortion. The conductors and drainwire are wrapped in a Midnight Blue PVC jacket with a black and blue nylon braid on the outside.

Noise-Dissipation System: This cable uses a foil/Mylar/foil shield with 100% coverage to capture RF interference that could modulate the equipment's ground reference. The RF is dissipated through a 22-gauge solid tinned copper drainwire.

RCA Plugs/Cold-Weld System: The RCA plugs are Direct-Silver plated with 8000-ampere welds, creating a perfect-connection alloy between the cable and the plug. The gold-plated RCA plugs use a patented design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of for its machinability.

Directionality: The cables are directional, and should be connected in the direction of the signal flow (i.e. from the CD player to the amplifier). The RCA plugs are marked with arrows on each end to indicate the intended signal direction. When connected in the proper direction, the music becomes more relaxed, pleasant, and accurate.
