Our take on the AudioQuest DragonTail

AudioQuest DragonTail

The DragonTail plugs into your PC to help take the strain off of its USB port.

Protect your DragonFly® and your computer's USB port

AudioQuest's DragonFly is a terrific little DAC, but plugging a heavy headphone cable into it can put a strain on your PC's USB port. Relieve the stress with AudioQuest's DragonTail USB extender. The flexible DragonTail simply plugs in between your PC and your DAC to reduce the chance of damaging either. It's a must-have accessory when traveling with your laptop and DAC, and also works great for connecting USB thumb drives. Plus, if your computer's USB ports are very close together, the DragonTail's slender connector saves space so you can plug in your DAC or thumb drive more easily next to other occupied ports.

I owned the DragonFly a while before purchasing the USB extender. Whenever I'd lean back in my seat, my headphones cord would pull the DragonFly. I've broken too many USB flash drives to let the same happen to my DAC. The extender gives a little more length and ensures I won't damage the DragonFly.

The Audioquest Dragontail was just what I needed to optimize my desktop audio setup. I use it in conjunction with the Dragonfly v1.2, Jitterbug, and Schiit Magni 2 headphone amp. Everyone's setup is different, but the Dragontail turned out to be the perfect fit for my needs. The product is high quality and provides good strain relief for the computer's usb port.

Pros: high quality construction

Cons: expensive

Does its job

Erik from honolulu, HI on 2/11/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Basically does what it is supposed to. When using the dragonfly dac on my computer it kind of felt like it was taxing on the usb port. Adding this seemed to give it more slack and put less stress on the port. I have a desktop, and i can see how this could help even more on a laptop with safety and durability.

Pros: Helps put less stress on usb port.

Cons: None

Why did you buy this?

Cheap insurance for the laptop and Dragonfly. Takes the strain off the computer's USB port and helps to prevent damage to the Dragonfly & USB port if they are accidentally bumped when plugged directly to the laptops's USB port. [ Robert  Dec 27, 2017 ]
Audioquest makes great cables. This extender uses one of their better cables showing how interested they are in providing high quality product to go along with their DragonFly products and also protect the computer and the DAC. [ SCOTT G  Nov 27, 2017 ]
To provide a flexible connection point to my laptop, so the DAC would not be bumped and otherwise abused when it is plugged directly into the USB port on my laptop. This is a lesson learned. [ Peter  Oct 14, 2017 ]
enjoying my dragonfly red so much. this extra extension will give it more flexibility and stress in my car when it is connected to my ipad pro. [ GUY B  Sep 10, 2017 ]

USB connections can become "loose", I decided to get the tail because of connection stress. [ Steven  Jan 19, 2017 ]
I have the Audioquest Dragonfly and when plugged into my laptop or desktop it is very possible to break it off if it was to get hit. This will allow it to hang to prevent damage to my $200 Dragonfly Red. [ Bradley  Nov 02, 2016 ]
filters out usb traffic noise [ DAVID  Nov 01, 2016 ]
I prefer to have something flexible plugged into my laptop because it seems that things sticking out get hit. [ Jean  Sep 30, 2016 ]
WANTED IT [ MARVIN  May 20, 2016 ]
The Dragon Fly sticks out of the USB port quite a bit and is likely to get damaged as my laptop or nearby items move around. This should prevent damage. [ PHILIP  Jan 13, 2016 ]
Space can get tight between USB cables and their outputs, this cable gives some room to operate and connect a DAC/noise filter combination with ease. [ Stephen  Dec 16, 2015 ]
