Overview

Our take on the AudioQuest Type 4

Type 4 cables feature four solid, long-grain copper conductors to ensure highly efficient signal transfer with minimal loss. Solid conductors eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound with multi-strand conductor cables.

High-value, high-performance speaker cables

AudioQuest's Type 4 speaker cables deliver finely detailed sound from your high-performance audio system. AudioQuest carefully engineered their cables based on years of their own in-house research to transfer signals as cleanly and faithfully as possible.

Precise cable geometry

These AudioQuest cables use two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge conductors. This difference in diameter reduces the possibility of distortion caused by any particular conductor's sonic "signature." A specialized spiral arrangement of the four conductors minimizes potential signal interaction, resulting in sound that's clearer and more dynamic.

I have been told by other audiophiles that Audioquest has sold out and they are not what they once were. Problem, is that I hear such a tremendous difference from all the other garbage out there. Perfect wire for short distance set ups and durability.

Product Research

Features:

Solid Conductors: All four of the AudioQuest, CinemaQuest Type 4 speaker cable conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the single greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat harsh and distorted sound. Solid conductors enable the Type 4 cables to produce very clear sound.

Long-Grain Copper: The Type 4 cable's LGC (Long-Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper.  LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and provides overall better performance.

4-Cross Geometry: The relationship between conductors defines a cable's most basic electrical values (capacitance and inductance). However, even when those variables are kept in a reasonable balance, the relationship between conductors can be varied in ways that greatly effect the sound. The spiral construction of Type 4 cable allows for significantly better dynamic contrast and information intelligibility than if the same conductors were run in parallel. The specific 4-cross geometry used in Type 4 cables maximizes this advantage.

Insulation: Since the Type 4 cables use solid conductors it doesn't require hard insulation and can take advantage of the vibration damping advantage of a softer insulation.

SST (Spread Spectrum Technology: SST (Spread Spectrum Technology) is a method for significantly reducing distortion flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors.

Terminations: The Type 4 cable utilizes high quality BFA/Banana connectors that allow the Type 4 cables to be securely attached to your speakers and amplifier. The BFA/Banana connectors are a dull looking silver because its metal is plated directly over the connector itself. There is no shiny and harsh sounding nickel layer underneath to distort your audio signal.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Reviews are great and reputation of Audio Quest name. [ Warren  May 07, 2017 ]
Crutchfield have proven over the years a very reliable source of all things Audio/Video [ Erwin  Mar 20, 2017 ]
I purchased the audioquest type 4 and my Goldener Triton 3's and my Superstar 50 center channel sound awesome.. I had a problem with the banana plugs and I called Crutchfield technical support and a pair of replacement cables was sent at no charge.. You guys are the best!!! [ Tsgt2007  Oct 30, 2016 ]
Purchased a similar set for my center channel speaker and the upgrade was very noticeable. Intentions are to bi-amp my Klipsch RP-260F speakers [ David  Oct 30, 2016 ]
I did a lot of research and talked to multiple sales associates at multiple Best Buy locations regarding these cables to see if it is truly worth the price and every time they said these are the best cables you can buy. In every Magnolia room at the Best Buy's by my house every single cable used for all of their speakers for demo purposes are AudioQuest cables. Excellent quality in fit and finish. I highly recommend. [ Dustin  May 30, 2016 ]
simple and well built way to connect your speakers [ Dustin  May 21, 2016 ]
My musician brother with perfect pitch would be on my case if the sound wasn't the best [ Marilyn  Apr 28, 2016 ]
First of all I completely forgot to get speaker cables for my new system. These seemed pretty nice and high quality without completely breaking the bank. Originally I thought I would need 15ft, but I think that would be overkill for my room size. I'm hoping I made the right decision on the length. Other than that, they are cables, but they do look nice. [ Christian  Mar 20, 2016 ]
Kevin's recommendation [ Gary  Dec 19, 2015 ]
To the extent these cables can minimize even nominal signal loss, then I think it makes economic sense to pair them with my spendy new 3-way tower speakers instead of the spooled wire and self-installed connectors I've been using. Can't wait to hear it all in full splendor. [ Richard  Jul 29, 2016 ]

This cables are not very thick great for main front and center. I will only recommend them for surrounds if the speakers are not too far apart but in your situation, I will use AudioQuest in-wall cables. That's what I have for my surrounds and front high and it works perfect. [ Octavio M De  Apr 07, 2017 ]
Dear Richard, I imagine that the Crutchfield folks would be more qualified to give you specific advice than I am. I can tell you that these cables appear to be very high quality, and are performing perfectly in my system. Conventional wisdom would suggest that you should use the same cable type and gauge across connections when possible. Hope this helps? [ Robert  Apr 06, 2017 ]
Sorry, can't answer your question directly, but will say it's both a beautiful and functional speaker cable. Looks and sounds great and I believe it helped eliminate a slight humming issue I had when I initially set up my A/V system. Plus it looks as if it will last many years; built well. Enjoy. [ MICHAEL AL  Aug 12, 2014 ]
I confirmed with Audioquest and they do make a in wall type 4 class 3 speaker wire. [ Tsgt2007  Aug 11, 2014 ]
I confirmed with Audioquest and they do make a in wall type 4 class 3 speaker wire. [ Tsgt2007  Aug 11, 2014 ]
made a big diff. in my two channel system over reg. 12 gauge wire . system is parasound p5 and a21 preamp and amp.speakers are focal 836w towers. mostly running lossless i tunes and cds on nad 565 . the type 4 cables made a noticeable diff. in high end and mid bass in my speakers . also using AQ cinnamon rca usb and fiber optic cables for about two years now. all seem to work with no issues. [ MICHAEL  Aug 10, 2014 ]
Jose Z: I am not sure about that. You should probably ask AudioQuest, [ ROSS  Aug 10, 2014 ]
I do not know what Class it is rated but I can vouch for the fact that they send 100% of the notes from my Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10 amp to the PSB Image B4 shelf speakers & produce a sound like a system costing 10x as much. [ WILLIAM A  Aug 10, 2014 ]
You could actually have each of the speakers up to almost 10 FT from the amplifier (each cable is 10 feet long) Two 10' lengths of speaker cable with a pair of BFA Banana connectors on each end [ Jeff  Jan 08, 2014 ]  Staff
I use them for mains, but did have to route them to make 90 degree turns. They are pretty flexible. [ Jeffrey  Apr 05, 2017 ]
They need about 3-4" to bend comfortably to a 90 degree angle. However, they can be bent in about half that space if necessary. [ TAD  Apr 03, 2017 ]
