Boyo VTL400 Rear-view Camera

BryanG from Orange County, CA on 2/24/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this since Spring 2010 and it's still going strong. Looks good and performs as well as it did since the day I installed it. My truck is always parked outdoors and is exposed to all weather conditions (what little variety we get here in socal). No chrome chipping, no fogging up, just a damn good camera for the price. Would recommend and would buy again! (it actually came free with my nav unit).

Pros: Inexpensive!

Cons: I would prefer a camera mounted higher, like on my tailgate handle, but this came for free with my DNX9960, so beggars can't be choosers.

Boyo VTL400 Rear-view Camera

mark from boston, ma on 3/20/2011

I have one of these on two different trucks. I have replaced both twice! a total of four cameras, all of which malfunctioned. the main problem was the cameras fogging up after rain, also the small four wire connector is very touchy and the camera will go dead from time to time requiring the connector to be undone and replugged. i am very dissapointed in this product.

Do not buy this

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you get this, simply discard it and save everyone from taking the time to route the wire through their car only to find out later that this camera is NOT waterproof and will not last more than a year or so. I installed this and it's completely disintegrated in 2 years. It's rusted througha nd popped off the frame. I live in a harsh climate, but I store my car in a heated garage and I've protected this camera from the elements on snowy days. It didn't matter. Save yourself the hassle.

Camera quality

FRDbronco79 from Oklahoma on 8/17/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I have been impressed with the quality of this camera. even its low light nite capabilities. I have not yet had any problems with it fogging up during rain other than what gets on the lens. However I have only had it since December 2009 and it already is pitting and rusting on the chrome. I keep it clean and the whole vehicle waxed. so weather dosn't have time to build up on it. I also live in the dryer south western part of Ok and we dont have a lot of weekly or monthly rain.

Cons:

Best to avoid this product.

Douglas from Richmond, VA on 8/11/2010

Received free as part of a promotion, this camera works fine most of the time but fogs up when it rains. The chrome also flakes off rather quickly so it looks unsightly. I will be replacing mine soon with something else.

Pros:

Cons:

Waterproof? Not quite.

Anonymous from Kingsville, TX on 12/20/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Listed as waterproof, but it's far from. Worked great until the first time it rained. For a couple days after it rained, the camera's lens was fogged up from the inside. The fog disappeared but it doesn't work right anymore, the images are just blurry. The only good thing about this all the wires are combined in to one small cord. Buy a better camera, and splice in to the supplied cord.

Cons:

Great paperweight!

Dave from Woodbridge, VA on 11/6/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this as a freebie with my receiver purchase. I read all these great reviews before it showed, so I wasn't too surprised when it stopped working. It was great for the two weeks that it worked. Then it rained hard. The camera worked after that--sort of. The lens had condensation inside of it. It finally evaporated and the camera just didn't work the same after that. Then a few days ago it kicked the bucket. No picture, not a thing. Save some extra cash and get one of the name brand ones. You'll appreciate the extra money spent on reliability.

Boyo VTL400 Rear-view Camera

ASK from Driggs, ID on 10/1/2009

I got the VTL-400 as a christmas gift last year, installed fairly easily. It is a pain to run the wire under a truck and try to find a good place to have it up out of the way of everything. After about 8 months it just stopped working, I checked all the connections on my head unit and everything was good. Called crutchfield to see about the warranty, and they said that boyo had to do the warranty repairs/replacement. Tried calling them and the people who answered the phone acted like they had better things to do and referred me to their website. Went there and couldn't download their RMA form, tried to email them and never got a response. Turned out the problem was a break in the wiring harness near the back end, fixed it and got it working. If they used a heavier gauge wire this problem might not have happened. Wont be buying anything from this company again. As always Crutchfield customer service was excellent. Too bad other companies don't have the same level of service.

Waste of Money

LinemanBorn from Louisiana on 9/11/2009

This camera looks good out of the package, but won't take long to disappoint. The install wasn't bad at all. Once I hooked it up the pic looked great. FIRST time it got wet it was CASAYED!!(No GOOD) Hasn't worked since, this was after about four day's after installation. It came free with my DNX6140, but wouldn't buy another. It's ONLY 7 days old!!!!

Extremely Poor Quality

Jeffrey from Long Island, New York on 9/11/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera came "free" as part of the Kenwood DNX-8120 package we ordered just about a year ago, and we got what we paid for. Installation was simple and straight-forward, however the camera lasted only a few months before it began flaking and subsequently nearly rusted beyond recognition. Cosmetics aside, and probably needless to say, but at the ripe old age of 5 months, the camera fails to operate at all. It's now reduced to a rusting, flaking eyesore affixed (illegally in New York State, I might add) to my license plate. I am hesitant to order another Boyo product, but would like to maintain the integrity of my system and replace the hapless Boyo. Word to the wise -- even if it comes free, don't bother installing it. Instead, opt for something of better quality, durability and workmanship.

Don't Waste Your Time

drugdoctor from Sylvester, GA on 8/15/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the review by broderp 02/28/09. This product was very difficult to install and it still doesn't work well with my AVIC-X710BT. It came free with my stereo but I wasted many hours trying to install it. Picture quality is not good. I have only had it for a week so I haven't seen the flaking reported by others but I would not be suprised. I am very displeased with this product. Even if you get it for free - don't waste your time!

Can't complain about the price, came free with my Kenwood DNX7100. Worked fine when it was new but then the finish started to flake and rust. Now it doesn't work at all. Did not last long!!!

Picture quality leaves a lot to be desired. Installation is straightforward. Chrome plated plastic looks cheap up close.

I have had two of these. The first one was intermittent and when it did work only worked in B&W. The second one fogged after a heavy rain and has never cleared! Avoid Boyo products!

Boyo VTL-400 in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

David from Dallas, TX on 3/3/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

wasn't something I was at all interested in, but it came free with my Kenwood DNX5120, so it's hard to argue over value; seems to work just fine and wasn't difficult to install the only "knock" I would give it is that the 12V/Gnd wires at the radio end are REALLY small and, I thought, hard to work with, so I soldered some 22AWG wires on there

Cons:

They are joking.

broderp from Ohio on 2/28/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm on my second one. The first one had very good picture quality with my KENWOOD 5120 head unit, but the plating was worn and flaking off in less than 2 weeks. You will also have to silicone the small allen head bolts to keep them from rusting out. Crutchfield was awesome and sent me a new one, and I polished and waxed the finish to protect it as best possible. The finish is doing better, but still flaking after 4 weeks use. But even worse, this camera NEVER had a clear picture. It's always been out of focus. On cold days I get "rainbow effects" and really bad picture. Installation is a PAIN. You CAN NOT use your cars mounting bolts with this unless your holes are not threaded. Looking at the pictures you will see the bolt heads are to fit in the hex shaped resesses. If your holding the camera while bolting them in, you can not get the bolts to turn into the hex shaped resesses in the camera body. I had to buy smaller sized bolts and nuts, to seat inside the hex openings and slide thru my cars threaded bolt openings. This required me to take the interior of my trunk out and bolt the smaller hex bolts from inside my trunk. The camera wire also required you to have to drill a hole thru the car to the inside, as well as thru your license plate and your plate bracket if it's to thick. If your willing to tweak the mounting, then it may be a good deal, so long as yours has a clear/sharp image. POOR QUALITY.

Good picture, sub-par quality

Pete from Hartford, Ct. on 2/4/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recieved this as part of a package with the DNX5120. Install was easy and picture is good. On the other hand, the housing around the lens bar is made of plastic and only 2 weeks after install the chrome is coming off the plastic. The picture quality is still good but I am going to have to remove this, sand, primer and paint it in the spring as visually it is only going to get worse over time. It was free though so well worth the money...

Boyo VTL400 Rear-view Camera

rhodsco from Denver, CO on 1/21/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as advertised. We were quite challenged finding the wire for the reverse lights and couldn't get anything from the Dodge dealer. The Sprinter van must have over 100 wires running through it. We had to find the wires that went to the rear lights and narrowed it down. We drove it in the rain over the weekend and it was a little blurred. I assume because a rain drop landed on the lense. With the Sprinter van so tall, I thought I'd need another camera at the top to watch out for tree limbs and signs on poles. So far I have been able to see a wide area of view.

Excellent choice

Scott from Rapid City, South Dakota on 1/18/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed two of these now. Nice camera, great low light capabilities, as your backup lights are all that is needed on a dark night for full illumination (with no other lighting). This model's mounts are much nicer than all the other brands I looked at (which gives a much more factory look to your installation). The only negative was that after several months of winter road salts- that aparently road grime and salts quickly eats the chrome paint off the plastic housing (It looks like metal but it is actually plastic). I am not very pleased about that as I do wash my car every week. But what can you do- Otherwise I give this camera very high marks. Its the best one out there out of all the ones I looked at. -Scott

So Far, So Good

Chris from Montgomery, AL on 12/1/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product came with my DNX5120 installed on a 2005 Suburban. The most tedious part was routing the wiring. So far I have no complaints about the camera. The picture is good, the unit looks good, and it works as advertised. I will keep an eye out for problems other reviewers have referred to - chrome plating coming off, burnt wire, lens scratching - and update my review with what happens in the next couple of months.

Cons:

Dissapointed so far.

Suvi from Upper Darby, PA on 11/17/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just finished installing my Kenwood DNX5120 and this camera. After getting everything wired and cleaned up the camera was working fine! A good picture as well. I set my receiver to interrupt when the car was in reverse and that worked good as well. After only one hour installation I could no longer see any picture. I then used the power tester BOYO included to check every connection and it led me to the adaptor which connects the camera to the receiver. its about 1ft long and brand new in the boyo box and there was something wrong with it. When I played with it and moved it around I would get picture from time to time. I guess Im not too mad since it was free but if you really want a rear view camera I dont suggest this one....or maybe it was just one faulty wire. I will be calling the always friendly crutchfield to get a replacment adaptor......i hope to god they dont make me take the whole camera out and return it:)

terahex from Portland, OR on 10/8/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Disappointing!!! I purchased this with a Kenwood DNX7100 and have a number of issues. I had it professionally installed. After about 2 months the camera started to only work intermittently. Then the screen on the head unit started to flip like the vert hold was out. Eventually I noticed that cable was burn. I attempted to repair the cable and the screen came back. I later noticed the screen seem to be dirty, so I attempted to clean with a Q-Tip. Now it's plastic lens is all scratched up and I can't see a thing!!!!! TIP: DO NOT try and clean the lens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Product

Sammy from Las Vegas, NV on 9/18/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first day I had this thing connected it saved me from backing into a car that was parked behind me as I was backing out of my garage at night. I couldn't see my other car parked directly behind me through the tinted rear glass at night and just as I looked down at the screen I was about to back into it. This camera paid for itself the first day I got it.

Boyo VTL400 Rear-view Camera

Nick from Orlando, Florida on 6/30/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first back-up camera that I have ever installed and used. Installation was a snap. Just finding a good place to route the wire is the hardest part. Several months later, the picture quality is still picture-perfect! But, the chrome finish has completed faded away. The little screws that keep the camera angle in the user-defined position have completely rusted out. Cosmetically it looks bad but still performs like a champ.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was disappointed as it only worked two months and then failed. Also the chrome finish does not hold up to the weather well. Mine is pitting and corroded just after 2 month s of use. I'm currently try to find out if it is under warranty or not. I will say that when it was working it was a great picture and was very clear. Maybe I just got a bad one.

Great Camera and small

Carlos from Winter Garden, FL on 11/28/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the AVIC-D3 and it came with this free camera, first I thought it was very big because of the pictures and second I thought it's FREE so it might be poor quality, I was WRONGGGGG. The camera is small, great quality, super high resolution and NIGHT PICTURE is excellent even thougt it doesn't have Infrared leds (doesn't need it), is much better than other CCD cameras with infrared leds that I have tested before, (I have installed several RV rear view cameras way more expensive than this one) and this one haves better resolution during the night and no noise in the picture and you can see COLOR at night compared to the other cameras I have tested wich go to black and white or the color fades. You will love it and more if it's free.
