Our take on the Klipsch® Gallery™ G-17 Air

The compact G-17 Air delivers a full-bodied sound that belies its small size. Klipsch build amazingly efficient and highly responsive speakers that reproduce sound with minimal distortion.

Imagine walking into your home after a long day, pulling your iPhone® out of your pocket, selecting your favorite song, and hearing it fill the room. It's possible with the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air powered speaker system.

G-17 Air

The G-17's Apple AirPlay compatibility makes it an important part of your home wireless network. It can wirelessly connect with any Wi-Fi®-enabled device that uses iTunes® — such as an iPod touch, laptop, or iPhone. And because AirPlay can support multiple speaker systems simultaneously, you can have two or more G-17 Airs in different rooms all playing music from your computer, for example.

G-17 Air

In iTunes, you can choose songs and playlists, select your speakers and adjust each speaker system's volume independently. You can pick your songs from your iPod touch as you walk through your home and have your choices play in every room. Or watch a movie on your iPad with the soundtrack cranking through the G-17.

Breath-taking sound from a very small system

The compact G-17 Air delivers a full-bodied sound that belies its small size. Klipsch build amazingly efficient and highly responsive speakers that reproduce sound with minimal distortion.

The built-in speakers include a pair of 3/4" aluminum tweeters with Klipsch's famous Tractrix® horn technology for highs that are clear, detailed, and dynamic. Two 2-1/2" long-throw woofers provide solid mids and surprisingly punchy bass, thanks in part to a precisely tuned, flared port. Each driver is powered by its own amp, so the sound stays crisp and clean when you crank it up — and you'll want to, once you hear this system in action.

A sophisticated look to match the sound

Go ahead — show off your speakers. The G-17's wafer-thin grille is attached magnetically, so its easy to remove and there's nothing but smooth surface underneath. The injection-molded polymer cabinet presents a sleek profile and has a handsome high-gloss black finish. You can place the G-17 on its tinted, tempered glass base. Or mount it on the wall — the cabinet has keyhole slots in the back.

From the review Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air: Slim profile, big sound — and AirPlay to boot!

"Horn-loaded speakers have a characteristic sound, and it's one I like. I'm impressed that the G-17 Air could deliver highly detailed sound from speakers contained in a cabinet so small. Most of my iTunes library is made up of lossless files, and there seemed to be nothing lost in the transmission from computer (or smartphone) to speaker. The Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air wireless speaker system is a great choice for someone with limited space, but who doesn't want to compromise with audio quality."

Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air is Exceptionally Good

Wayne from Pittsburgh, PA on 2/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is outstanding. Superior sound quality, easy to use, attractive styling. It very easily fills a large room with full sound at modest volume. Treble, mid range and bass are each excellent.

Pros: Outstanding sound quality. Extraordinary bass for its design and form factor, without overwhelming or obscuring pure mid range and treble sound. Great appearance. Very easy to set up and use.

Cons: None

Great Speaker

DKL from Buffalo NY on 12/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great speaker. The sound is strong but not house-shaking (which is what we wanted). Setup took less than 10 minutes and was as easy as advertised, both for our main laptop but also for an iPhone and an iPad.

Pros: Setup, ease of operation and quality of sound.

Cons: None that I can think of!

Some Troubles

Librarian from Atlanta, GA on 12/10/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is good of course, but (as with every other electronic device I own and use -- what else is new?) it is unpredictable. In this case it drops a great song and replaces it with silence for several interminable seconds, then starts again. Perhaps I need to ask my service for a more powerful wireless signal. But I am pretty resigned to the gaps. It is better than the Sonos 5 it replaces; that one would not agree with my wireless signal at all, even with consultation [spell-checker just suggested "consolation"] from Crutchfield (no resolution) and Sonos itself (technician roamed around my desktop trying everything he could, though nothing worked). That device stole several hours from my life. The two lessons for purchasers of any device of this kind are simple: it will be difficult to set up, and don't count on it working. I miss my old speakers. I miss my wires in the crawlspace. I even miss my KLH from forty-five years ago, but I think that may have nothing to do with anything other than a wish for a simpler time and fewer choices.

Pros: Sleek looking, small, good sound when not inexplicably silent

Cons: Sometimes inexplicably silent, less than easy to set up

Love This Unit

Ron E from Missoula, MT on 8/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first experience with any product from Klipsch. The G-17 is outstanding, everything I could have hoped for. I use the G-17 outdoors on my very, very, large deck and the sound is superb. I am completely satisfied with this unit.

Pros: Compact, easy to move around. Great sound! Easy to set-up with my airport extreme.

Cons: None.

Klipsch® Gallery™ G-17 Air

Michael from Wa on 8/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing sound for such a little system! Would be great if AirPlay on the system worked like appletv. In other words, even better/more connectivity beyond iTunes.

Pros: Easy to setup Great sound

Cons: Remote control is cheap! Surface is a dust magnet. LCD would be nice for interface.

Unique Product. Great Sound

PTC from Knoxville, TN on 2/1/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound. Plug it in. Run through the setup, which is straightforward and fairly simple...and enjoy. Works great with airplay, which is how i usually play music through the speaker. The only problem is that the Klipsch remote does not always work the controls (volume, next, pause, etc...) for iTunes on my computer. It works when I airplay from my iPad or iPod...go figure?

Pros: Looks cool. Sounds great. Is cool!

Cons: control of iTunes using remote is not consistent.

Looks Good / Sounds Average

Mario from Indiana on 1/4/2012

I had high hopes for this, I couldn't wait to unwrap it and place it on the wall in my new office. The power block kinda took the wind out of my sails, then the weird base glitch, maybe a Q/A issue. I am by no means an overly picky audiophile, but just to throw this out here, the pair of Logitech Z10 USB speakers I have been using for the past years sadly blew the G-17 out of the water. Shocking really. Disappointing. My G-17 went back to Crutchfield today, for that price I expected solid sound not just a pretty technology spiced gadget. Sound appeared to be better at levels too loud to listen to while working, so maybe this would be a hit at a party. Try for yourself and see if it suits you better than it did me!

Pros: Airplay support built in. Design is amazing and very contemporary. Setup is a breeze.

Cons: Stand base was misaligned to front of speaker, looked faulty and cheap, plus it's not adjustable at all. External power block (maybe mentioned in the description), basically ruins mounting the unit on the wall directly in front of an outlet. Sound is, sadly, neither a room filling audio experience, neither feels much stereophonic. In fact it felt like I was hearing more music with my left ear and the highs were not really there at all.

excellent overall

markstout from New York on 12/25/2011

Great sound. Great utility.

Pros: this is a gorgeous speaker with superb sound and the simple and flexible wifi system set up i was seeking. I set it up last night to stream some christmas music from my ipad. I was able to use both accuradio (airplay enabled) and pandora. For some reason i can only get pandora to stream to the g-17 after i have set the output to the unit from accuradio. Weird but i dont see an airplay icon in the pandora app.

Cons: I have had a few instances of dropping signal for a sec. And today it droped altogether oncebwhile streaming pandora. I think the intermittent dropping was due to wifi net work load. Not cool.

System Overview

AirPlay Powered Speaker: The Klipsch Gallery series G-17 Air is an AirPlay enabled speaker system that provides wireless access and playback of your iTunes libraries from your computer (PC/Mac) or your Apple iOS device; such as iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad running iOS 4.2 or later. The Klipsch G-17 Air provides audio streaming from your iTunes account on your computer or Apple iOS device via your home's wireless WiFi network.Other options to connect an audio device include a USB input for direct digital connection charging of most 30-pin Apple devices and a 3.5 mm analog input that can accept almost any music player available. The G-17 Air employs Klipsch's famous horn-loaded technology for incredible detail and clarity. The Klipsch G-17 Air features a sleek, minimalist cabinet design with a high-gloss piano black finish and can be wall-mounted or table-top mounted.

Note: AirPlay requires your PC or Mac computer to be running iTunes 10.1 or later and iPod touch (2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone (3GS/4/4S), iPad (1/2) with iOS 4.2 or later. The G-17 Air and your AirPlay audio source must be connected to the same wireless network via a WiFi (802.11b/g) router or hub.

Speaker Technology

4 Klipsch Principles: Klipsch believed four principles to be the foundation for great sound. Together, these four design principles (high efficiency with low distortion, controlled directivity, flat frequency response, and wide dynamic range) have and always will be the foundation for Klipsch stunningly powerful and precise sound.

Bi-Amplified Power: The G-17 Air is powered by separate, high-quality, digital amplifiers for each driver - 10 watts x 2 channel for high frequencies and 20 watts x 2 channel for low frequencies.

Stereo Tractrix Horns Mated to Titanium Compression Tweeters: The G17 Air provides legendary Klipsch dynamic sound from proprietary Tractrix Horn technology that reproduces amazing, lifelike sound from a compact speaker system. The Klipsch G17 Air is fitted with two 0.75" aluminum diaphragm compressions drivers (tweeters) mated to 90º x 90º square Tractrix Horns. The dual 0.75" solid-formed, very lightweight, aluminum diaphragms work in conjunction with precise phasing plugs at the horn throats to create highly efficient drivers with excellent transient response and lack of distortion.

Long-Throw Injection Molded Graphite Woofers: The Klipsch G-17 Air employs dual 2.5" long-throw IMG woofers with light, yet very stiff diaphragms matched with large motor structures, designed for maximum controlled excursion that combine with a precisely tuned port to reproduce tight and balanced bass.

Enclosure Design

Decor Friendly Design: The Klipsch G-17 Air's elegant, injection molded polymer cabinet has a front baffle that curves on both sides to create both an attractive design and a solid, low-resonance structure. The unique, twelve-step cabinet finishing process achieves a sleek, high-quality, piano black high gloss luster that blends well with almost any decor.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Klipsch G-17 Air features a bass reflex enclosure with a side-firing port for deeper bass and higher efficiency. The side-firing port is perfectly matched with the cabinet and woofers, precisely flared to minimize turbulence and distortion, and positioned to be fully functional wherever the speaker system is placed or mounted.

Frameless, Acoustically Invisible Grille: With the thinnest grille ever to come from Klipsch (1/2" the thickness of a credit card), the sound from the G-17 Air is equally detailed, and the look equally elegant, with the grille on or off. With it off the high gloss appearance and fine lines of the speaker are preserved due to the lack of visible fasteners on the speaker baffle made capable by a unique magnetic grille rod attachment.

Audio Sources

AirPlay Compatible: AirPlay lets you use your home’s wireless Wi-Fi network (802.11 b/g), to easily stream music in high quality Apple Lossless sound directly from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad capable of running iOS 4.2 to the G-17 Air without wires or having to dock your device. You can also stream your iTunes music from your Mac or PC to one, or even multiple, G-17 Air units in your home, taking advantage of a simple and efficient new method of creating a whole house audio system.

  • iTunes Streaming: The Klipsch G-17 Air is able to play audio from your computer's iTunes account wirelessly (WiFi) using AirPlay streaming technology. When connected to the same network as a computer running iTunes, the G-17 Air can appear as an output option in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window. You can then browse your iTunes collection on your computer and stream music to the G-17 Air. To use this feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.1 or later) connected to the same wireless (WiFi) network.
  • Apple Device Streaming: AirPlay also lets you wirelessly stream music and music apps stored on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to the G-17 Air. So there's no need to dock your Apple device, unless you want to charge it. You will need to download the Klipsch Air app from the Apple app store. This feature works with iPod touch (2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone (3GS/4/4S), and iPad (1/2) with iOS 4.2 or later - connected to the same wireless network.
Note: The G-17 Air and your AirPlay audio source must be connected to the same wireless network via a WiFi (802.11b/g) router or hub.

USB Port: The Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air will also charge and play your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad through the unit's USB (type-A) port at the rear of the unit, using the USB/iPod dock connector cable that came with your Apple device. The unit's USB port supports audio playback, basic remote control, and charging of your connected iPod, iPhone, or iPad. You can playback audio from stored content, streamed content, or apps on your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Basic playback controls include Play, Pause, & Skip track (previous/next).
