Overview

Our take on the Klipsch Heresy III

I'll never forget the first time I heard the Klipsch Heresys. It was by sheer coincidence. A college housemate had shown up at the door with a pair of them that he'd brought from home. Even way back then their design was over 20 years old, and they looked more like antiques than audio gear to me. Confident that my own then-up-to-the-minute and highly rated bookshelf speakers were more than a match for these "elder statesmen," I invited my housemate to hook them up for a listening session (and a little lesson in humility, heh heh).

Classic Klipsch sound that never goes out of style

I'll never forget the first time I heard the Klipsch Heresys. It was by sheer coincidence. A college housemate had shown up at the door with a pair of them that he'd brought from home. But I was the one who was taken to school that day. The instant we fired up the Heresys I was speechless. Their sparkling clarity and dynamic range were on a level that my speakers could never touch. All the musical details came pouring out loud and clear in ways I'd never heard before. And although I never told him, I was totally envious. Many years later I can't even remember Chris' last name, but I'll never forget the sound of those Heresys and the lasting impression they made on me.

Heresy iii

A modern take on a time-honored design

Since that day long ago, Klipsch has tweaked and fine-tuned their classic design to create the Heresy III. A more powerful woofer, large-magnet titanium diaphragm tweeter, and new titanium diaphragm midrange compression driver all work together to give this speaker a thoroughly up-to-date sound. Klipsch also added dual speaker inputs to allow bi-wiring or bi-amping for even greater performance levels. And they increased the Heresey's already high-efficiency design by 3 dB to an impressive 99 dB — making them an excellent choice for low- and medium-powered tube amps.

Just about the only thing that hasn't changed is the quality. Klipsch still makes the Heresy one at a time by hand in Hope, Arkansas. Each speaker is available in a beautiful Cherry, Walnut, or Black Ash lacquered wood veneer finish, and includes an angled riser base for floor placement that can be removed for custom installations.

Features

3-Way Design: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker features a three-way design that uses horn-loaded compression drivers for midrange and treble reproductions and a direct radiating 12" woofer for the low frequencies.

  • 1" Tweeter (w/ Tractrix Horn): The 1" (K-107-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled to a Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics.
  • 1.75" Midrange (w/ Exponential Horn): The 1.75" (K-53-TI) titanium diaphragm compression driver is coupled with an Exponential Horn for detailed, accurate midrange sound.
  • 12" Woofer: The 12" (K-28-E) fiber-composite cone woofer delivers powerful low frequencies. The 12" woofer also employs a treated cloth surround for added efficiency and flexibility.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover (HF: 5500Hz/MF: 850Hz) on the Heresy III features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker employs a solid, inert MDF cabinet which minimizes panel vibrations that can color sound. The acoustic suspension (sealed) design lends itself to the speaker's accurate, natural sound reproduction. The Heresy III is available in a high-quality cherry, walnut, or black ash real-wood veneer finish.

Dual Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single/dual), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Placement: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker will perform well in a variety of locations. Corner, floor placement will deliver the highest degree of low bass reinforcement and the pre-installed slant riser base helps to compensate for the Heresy's short stature. This riser may be removed for shelf or cabinet placement. Self-stick rubber pads are supplied for attachment to the bottom of the cabinet to prevent scratching of shelves and hard surfaces. Best results will be achieved using the following general guidelines.

  • Place on a common wall 6' to 15' apart.
  • Position them equidistant from the wall behind the speakers and equidistant height above the floor (place at ear level if shelf or cabinet mounting the speaker).
  • Angle speakers toward the listener and even with or forward of any adjacent obstructions.
  • Placing them near a corner or wall provides the greatest amount of bass while moving the speakers away from room boundaries reduces bass.
  • Asymmetrical placement of a pair of speakers from adjacent side walls can smooth room-induced bass unevenness.
Note: Experiment with the above guidelines to suit your taste and to compensate for your room's acoustic characteristics.

USA Made: The Klipsch Heresy III loudspeaker is built to order and handmade in the USA at Klipsch's manufacturing facility in Arkansas.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I was impressed by the history of the Heresy III. The size is right for set up that I have and the size of the room. Reviews were very favorable by other purchasers. Scratch and dent price helped along with Crutchfield's guarantee and the warranty on speakers. Assistance available by Crutchfield's service department. Also, it is a Klipsch. [ Richard  Apr 19, 2017 ]
The Klipsch name and Quality. The sound is hard to beat for the price [ Joe  Jul 23, 2016 ]

AWESOME SPEAKERS [ RICKEY  Jul 12, 2016 ]
I've owned Klipsch KG4's (that I re-capped and replaced the tweeter diaphragm) for the last few years and have been happy with them. But the cabinets look like crap and they are only two way (sometimes the mids can get muddled). I've always wanted to own a pair of Heresy's and finally talked myself into the purchase. I chose this based on Crutchfield customer reviews and other professional reviews found on the internet. [ Dale  Jan 15, 2016 ]
I purchased my first pair of Heresey 2 speakers in 1986,Saebo, Japan. I have had to do work on both. One of them can not be repaired so time for a new one. I push them with a 10 watt tube amp. Beautiful [ Nathan Van  Dec 13, 2015 ]
Owned a pair a couple of decades ago and loved them. [ Will  Nov 29, 2016 ]
I have always wanted them and I need some very efficient speakers for a tube amp. [ Ronald  Apr 22, 2017 ]
My favorite speaker of all time. I always liked these for years. [ David  Mar 14, 2017 ]
These are a 50th birthday gift for my twin brother. He will love them and their overall design. A timeless classic. I cannot wait to hear them. [ Michael  Sep 03, 2016 ]
Setting up a separate monaural system for my mono LPs. I wanted a 12" speaker similar to what studios used in the 1950s and '60s and one that could be driven with a 25 or so watt tube amp. [ Kenneth  Aug 08, 2016 ]

4 questions already asked

Don't know. I have three different, separate playback systems, one stereo, one mono which uses the Klipsh, and one 14 speaker and dual subwoofer surround sound system. They are all in different rooms. I have found that both crossover and volume settings on subwoofers will depend on the size/shape/acoustic deadness of the room, the placement of the subwoofer, the power of the subwoofer amp and the "speed' or musicality of the particular sub. In short, yo do it by ear and personal taste. [ Kenneth  Dec 24, 2016 ]
I would set to large if your processor doesn't let you set frequency. Mine Lexicon allows me to set the front L/R crossover to a fixed frequency. I would look at what Large vs small means via frequency on your system. Also these are acoustic suspension speakers and they reproduce the low frequencies a little different than a ported sub-woofer. You want a good amount of overlap or you will be missing some of the upper lows. [ Turbo  Dec 24, 2016 ]
I set mine to large they have a great base sound [ BRIAN  Dec 23, 2016 ]
If you can set crossover at 150hz. Set up as large speaker. [ SCOTT  Dec 23, 2016 ]
It is still 8 ohms [ Mark  Nov 06, 2015 ]
Hi John, i'm sorry i do not have a clue, i would e-mail Klipsch and ask them. Joe [ Joe  Nov 06, 2015 ]
It's my understanding that each amp in a biamp configuration would still the speaker as an 8 ohm load...HF amp 'sees' 8 ohms and LF amp 'sees' 8 ohms. [ Barry  Nov 06, 2015 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system. [ Krissy  Apr 29, 2016 ]  Staff
