Overview

Our take on the Klipsch Reference R-14M

Over the years, Klipsch Reference has been one of our best-selling speaker lines. And for good reason — for decades Klipsch has been crafting high-quality speakers that offer powerful, lifelike sound. They've continued this tradition with their compact, affordable R-14M.

Classic Klipsch sound at a great value

Over the years, Klipsch Reference has been one of our best-selling speaker lines. And for good reason — for decades Klipsch has been crafting high-quality speakers that offer powerful, lifelike sound. They've continued this tradition with their compact, affordable R-14M.

This bookshelf pair features Klipsch's legendary horn-loaded tweeter, which produces clear, detailed highs. A copper spun 4" woofer delivers solid midrange and bass response in the sturdy speaker cabinet. And 5-way binding posts offer easy, secure wire connections. Make them part of a two-channel music system that doesn't take up much shelf space. Or use a pair of the R-14Ms as the front channels of a compact surround sound speaker system.

Build a complete Reference system

Add more bass to the R-14Ms with a matching subwoofer, or team them with other Klipsch Reference speakers for high-impact home theater.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very disappointed. I found them to be harsh, especially the voices. The imaging wasn`t great either. I have PSB`s that are smaller than these. The bass on these are a little better, but not for the size. I found they sounded flat. I played mine for 3 days and sent them back. Buy any PSB`s! . I played them side by side and the PSB`s were much better. They were a great deal!! SUPER PRICE!! I rather spend a little more and get something I like. Most of the people like these, so give them a try, if you want.

Pros: SUPER PRICE!!! Look Gorgeous!!!

Cons: Flat sounding Harsh, bright vocals, Bad Imaging, Not great bass

Warm beautiful sound

Scott from Chicago, IL on 4/29/2017

I marvel every day at how warm and pure the sound is from these little speakers. Bass is deep even without a sub. Paired with a Sony DNR1070 receiver/amp, it takes me back to my youth and speakers twice the size from KLH, and these are better, especially at Crutchfield sale price.

Pros: Small footprint Elegant design Warm rich sound

Cons: They make you want to buy more of them

Great small speakers for a home office

Dewayne from Oklahoma City, OK on 4/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace 20+ years old Boston Acoustics small bookshelf speakers in my home "study" (office). While this is not my main home sound system, it is one that I listen to frequently while working at my desk and/or computer. While I would have liked to get speakers that were a bit larger, the available bookshelf space requirements mandated the R-14M size. No disappointment - I was amazed at the clarity and distinctness in the audibility of individual instruments. They are "brighter" which at first can be a little off-putting, but with a little break-in time and slight equalizer adjustment I am very satisfied. The music just sounds more "live" than before. Thanks to Klipsch and Crutchfield.

Pros: Size fits limited bookshelf space well Nice cabinet and finish Excellent sound clarity and fidelity for such small speakers Great value

Cons: A little bright initially - requires a little adaptation, but worth it.

I have a 43" TV in a bedroom. A two channel Sony stereo provides the power. These speakers flank the RC-42 under the TV. Each speaker's about eight feet from the TV. They fill the room up nicely. There fine for TV stations, or radio music.

Pros: Sound really good.

Cons: A little on the expensive side. I guess you get what you pay for.

Christopher from New York on 2/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speaker accompany my R-15M(s) well as rear speakers for my (mostly) music system. They work well with my newly purchased Yamaha R-S 500 receiver. Nice clean distinction in sounds, enough bass supplemented with a sub woofer (tight - no sloppily with bass notes that are indistinguishable). With that crisp tone, they manage sufficient warmth and range for a small package. For those who are interested, I did notice that they tend to bring out piano acoustics very nicely. I am very happy with the product and the service received making the purchase. I am very satisfied with how this upgraded and replaced my aging Polk bookshelf speakers.

Pros: Small package, good range and a great price.

Cons: Not a con per se - but- When used with another pair of speakers, be aware of watt tolerance differential between sets of speakers and the watts output of your receiver (and thus impedance levels). For example - as in my case-R15Ms Front, R14Ms for rear.

Nice little speakers

Mark from Wamego, KS on 1/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the R-14M's while they were on sale at half price in December. I had previously purchased a pair of Klipsch Reference R-15M's a month earlier, and really liked them. Since the 15M's were no longer on sale, I thought I'd give the smaller 14M's a try for another application I had. Due to being on backorder, I just received the 14M's two days ago and I haven't had much time to evaluate them. I have them currently hooked up to a modest 35 watt/channel vintage Technics receiver, and they sound very nice. Not as strong in the bass department as the 15M's, which is to be expected. But perfectly adequate for casual listening at moderate volume levels. These would make great rear channel speakers for surround sound systems, or as main or extension speakers for smaller two channel stereo systems. Obviously, there are better choices if you want to listen to heavy metal at high volumes, as is to be expected. But for their size, a very good quality bookshelf speaker.

Pros: Klipsch quality Good sound for their size

Cons: None

I have the Klipsch SS-1's for my rear speakers and I have been wanting to replace my Boston Acoustic bookcase speakers that I use for my fronts and this was the perfect opportunity. I googled "The Best Bookcase Speakers" and low and behold the R-14M's were #3 on the list. To add to that they were $99! Yeah $99!!!!! They go above and beyond the term "getting what you paid for". I'm so happy my buddy turned me on to Klipsch a few years ago.. Thanks guys (and girls). Hmmm that $350 would go a long way towards my new subwoofer!!!

Klipsch R-14M. I purchased 2 sets of these speakers and hooked them up to my TV's speaker out. I ran the speaker wires under the carpet and put 2 of the speakers down on the floor next to my couch. I now hear sounds that I had never heard before! The other 2 speakers I used as a center channel for voice and placed them below the level of the TV. I can't believe how much better everything (regular TV, movies, and PS4) sounds!

Robert from park ridge, n j on 12/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent, well made product. They do exactly what I expected. And they are a steal for the price. I am using them in a virtual concert hall system that is neither surround sound, home theatre, Dolby Atmos or any other such. I knew Paul Klipsch personally but, oddly enough, never owned one of his products before now. I think these little speakers very well carry on the Klipsch tradition of fine speaker products.

Pros: Reasonable overall frequency response as near as I can tell without having frequency response charts to look at. Quite nicely made.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added these 2 bookshelf speakers onto an existing set of Klipsch speakers that are powered by a Denon 900W. I mounted these in my dining room and kitchen area (fairly small rooms) and leverage my dual zone capabilities. So far so good. You can hear the sub bleed through from the other which really helps fill the sound. They're decent for the price too. I'm contemplating getting a 2nd pair and mounting them as surround speakers in my living room. They certainly lack the bass that my other R-16s have but I wasn't expecting much. They can certainly crank and are plenty loud. The only con is the could be a little more crisp sounding. I've tried to EQ them through my receiver but have not had any luck yet.

Pros: Price, Sound,

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding book shelf speakers! I purchased these to replace the D-055 book shelfs that came with the Onkyo CR-N755 system that I purchased last year. Not that there was anything wrong with the D-055's but since purchasing the original system, I had added a pair of Klipsch SW-112 subwoofers and a pair of Reference RP160M monitors as left and right room corner systems. I wanted a matching speaker system for the R-14M's, the price was right. As front face center speakers the R-14M's are awesome! Unlike many small bookshelf speakers they are NOT to mid-rangey, bass response is good and high frequency superb for a speaker this size. Best of all they seem to blend with the corner speaker setups in a most pleasing way. I would highly recommend the R-14M's as part of a system or as stand alone bookshelf speakers.

Pros: very dynamic bookshelf even at low volume. Great price.

Cons: None

jim from Las Vegas, NV on 10/12/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers. They throw a very large sound stage, far beyond the edges of the cabinet. Theses little guys need two things to sing, stands, which I purchased from Crutchfield, and a sub woofer, which I built myself. There is usable energy down to about 90 hz., that's where I dialed in the sub. I love the sound they produce, I have metered them at 110 db spl. Clean no distortion. This is a very well thought out and executed design.

Pros: large sound stage. capable of very high spl with minimum power.

Cons: need sub-woofer to be on their best behavior

Features

1" Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The R-14M bookshelf speaker features Klipsch's proprietary Tractrix Horn technology mated with a 1" aluminum LTS tweeter, for impressive high-end response and greater extension, enhanced imaging and powerful dynamics.

  • Tractrix Horn Technology: The square Tractrix Horn delivers a 90° (w) x 90° (h) dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage.
  • LTS (Linear Travel Suspension): Behind each horn lies a 1.0-inch aluminum tweeter with a linear travel suspension to minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

4" Copper-Spun IMG Woofer: The Klipsch R-14M bookshelf speaker is outfitted with a single 4" Copper-Spun IMG woofer. The Copper-Spun IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) woofer is exceptionally light while being extremely rigid - providing remarkable low frequency response, with minimal cone breakup and distortion.

Flared Port: The Klipsch Reference series bookshelf speaker features a rear-firing port that is perfectly matched to the cabinet and drivers. The port is precisely flared to minimize turbulence even at the lowest frequencies.

MDF Cabinet: The Klipsch R-14M bookshelf speaker features a MDF cabinet with a brushed polymer veneer black finish that seamlessly integrates into almost any room or decor. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is utilized because of its damping characteristics for natural, uncolored sound without unwanted vibration and distortion.

Acoustically Transparent Grille: The Klipsch R-14M bookshelf speaker comes with a removable, black cloth grille that is acoustically transparent.

5-Way Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference series bookshelf speaker is fitted with sturdy 5-way binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The 5-way binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single or dual), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

Mounting Options: The Klipsch R-14M can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. It can also be wall-mounted.

  • Rubber Feet: The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with self-adhesive rubber feet to secure the speaker in place and prevent any damage to your stand's or shelf's surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.1875" to the height of the speaker.
  • Keyhole Slot: The Klipsch Reference series bookshelf speaker feature a single keyhole slot on the back of the cabinet for wall-mounting the speaker without any additional wall-mount bracket (mounting screws not supplied).

Placement: For optimum performance, Klipsch suggests placing the bookshelf speakers 6' to 15' apart. They may also be toed-in slightly for better stereo imaging. The listening position should be about 1 to 1.5x the distance separating the speakers.

Reference Series: The Klipsch Reference series consists of three floorstanding speakers (R-24F/R-26F/R-28F), two bookshelf speakers (R-14M/R-15M), one center channel speaker (R-25C), and one surround speaker (R-14S). The Klipsch Reference series line-up of loudspeakers sound great in stereo and home theater applications.

Optional Powered Sub: For bigger & deeper bass response, pair the R-14M bookshelf speaker with one of Klipsch's powered subwoofers (sold separately - see Accessories Tab).

5 questions already asked

I used Videosecu MS56B and Blue-Tac. They have been hanging on strong for 2 years without any issues. [ Randall  Jun 04, 2018 ]
Yes. These are not powered speakers. You'll either need a receiver or a pre-amp to power them. Choosing between a pre-amp or receiver depends on how you plan apply these speakers. For most situations people will just hook this up to a receiver. [ Ryan  Feb 23, 2018 ]
They will need some external signal from a receiver or amplifier. [ WILLIAM E  Feb 23, 2018 ]
The speakers require a receiver or amplifier. [ Lloyd  Feb 23, 2018 ]
They are great speaker's but they do require an audio source. [ Jeffrey  Feb 22, 2018 ]
Yes, these are 'passive' speakers meaning that they need a power source such as a stereo receiver or pre - amp/ amp combination. [ JAMES P  Feb 22, 2018 ]
What your turntable probably has is called a phono preamp. This means that all you'll need is an Integrated amplifier and some speaker wire. The turntable plugs into the amplifier, the amplifier plugs into the speakers. Look for an amplifier rated for just over 50 watts RMS into 8 ohms. Peak wattage ratings don't mean anything, make sure the wattage rating is RMS! I'm using an Akai AA R50 (63 Watts RMS into 8 Ohms). They sound great. About 75 watts RMS should give you optimal performance for these speakers. [ jwest1197  Sep 09, 2017 ]
Most turn tables are not pre - amps, they have a very small signal that is derived from the groove in the recording and the needle moving within a magnet. This small signal is fed through RCA cable to the pre - amp. The pre has a volume control that feeds the power amp that in turn feeds the amp that feeds the speakers. Hope this helps. [ JAMES P  Jun 11, 2017 ]
I'm sorry, have no idea. I will say I'm happy with the speakers which are used as satellite surrounds. [ Don  Jun 10, 2017 ]
These speakers are not powered so you'll need to have a pre-amp attached to your turntable in order for them to work. [ Ryan  Dec 27, 2016 ]
These are perfectly wonderful and reasonably-priced speakers that are not powered. I bought a Yamaha R-S202 receiver/amplifier to power the speakers. Again, these are perfect small speakers with a big accurate sound. I use them in my cellar and garage for listening to recorded music without commercial interruption. I wold bu the amplifier, Sony or a Yamaha to be able to use these speakers, yes I would. [ George  Dec 27, 2016 ]
There is no secondary power cable for these speakers. They require a powered input via the speaker cable such as is normally found in a Home Theater Receiver or stereo amplifier. [ DAVID M  Dec 27, 2016 ]
These are passive speakers (not self powered - so no power cord). You will need to use an amplifier to power these. These are rated at 50 watts when at 8ohms, which you actually want to be able to power at 2.5 times the peak power to get the best sound and headroom (so up to but close to 150 watts per channel at 8 ohms). I would suggest talking to a crutchfield rep to help you find tge right gear for this system based on your budget. [ Kevin  Dec 26, 2016 ]
No power cord- these are just the speakers and require a separate amp/pre amp for your turn table [ ROBERT  Dec 26, 2016 ]
no power cord , there Bluetooth speakers , they are 2way speakers, they need to be cranked up a bit to get some highs out of them ,otherwise good speakers. [ joe  Dec 26, 2016 ]
That would be Amplifier, not application, sorry, auto corrected. [ JAMES P  Dec 26, 2016 ]
These are passive speakers, not powered; so some type of application will be be needed. Also, what ever you decide to use, will need to have a phono input. The good news is that these speakers are very efficient and almost any receiver with a phono input will work. [ JAMES P  Dec 26, 2016 ]
They would be perfect for rear speakers in a surround sound system. I use mine in a system that has very vintage Bang & Olufsen Beovox S45 speakers as my main speakers. The Klipsch sound good. [ Lloyd  Nov 18, 2016 ]
I bought the R-14M speakers specifically to use as satellite surround speakers and they work great for this purpose. Don M. [ Don  Nov 18, 2016 ]
Absolutely! These little guys sound great. They lack the bottom end, but you have a sub, so you should love them. They do need stands to sound best. Hope this helps. [ JAMES P  Nov 18, 2016 ]
