Klipsch RS-400 surround speaker

The Special Limited Edition Reference RS-400's angled drivers deliver enveloping surround effects that fill the room.

Horn technology for dynamic performance

The RS-400 uses horn-loaded tweeters. Flared openings in the enclosure project high frequencies toward your listening area and prevent sound waves from simply spilling out in all directions. This horn design brings out details in everything you listen to, while reducing reflections that can color the sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 1 open box and 1 scratch and dent speaker, I was a bit worried, but everything is working great. These replaced a set of onkyo surround speakers from a HTIB and the difference is incredible. It really opened up the sound stage and I'm hearing things that I didn't know were in the movies. Even the regular tv programs sound much better now. Everything sounds really lively and energetic and now I'm enveloped by the sound. I feel like I'm in the movie. I used them as my fronts for a while to break them in and then moved them to the back. They sounded really good as fronts as well. They look really awesome without the grills but I keep them on to prevent the dust. I prefer the grills from RS-42 II but I did not want to spend twice as much just to get a rounded grill. These speakers are big and heavy, but the build is high quality, so this is not a con. I love everything about them. They look and sound awesome. I can't believe they only cost half the price of RS-42 II. For the price there is no better deal. I wish I could've bought another pair, but for my living room it would be an overkill.

Pros: Everything

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are excellent surround speakers for the money. I paired them with RF-82 towers a RC-52 and ref sub along with a denon receiver. The sound is full and clear. It brings the room to life whether its music or movies.for such small speakers it fills the space with lively sound. The overall size of the speaker is about the size of a small bookshelf speaker. The triangle shape is great for the audio as well as a nice visual. Watching tv in 5.1 has taken our movie nights to a whole new level.

Pros: Sound Looks

Cons: Nothing

rs 400

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

purchased a pair of open box well packaged and arrived perfect. used them to replace rs 41 ii and combined with rb 600 and rb5 great set up. sound from rs 400 very clear and real coming from all sides when setting up noticed the slightly higher pitch than rbs but for surround effects made the effect real they were still less bright than pair of kef c2 I had recently taken out. and compaired curiously on the day. classic rock and blues sound divine and for the very reasonable price completed my system. have had the rs 42 ii and although not a side by side comparison would take rs 400 over them for price, and output only thing to get used to is the non rounded grill ( minor)

Pros: price, quality, and service enveloping sound

Cons: used to round grill on rs 41 , 42 so need to adjust to shape

Same sounds as the rf-42ii

R from Oklahoma City,ok on 6/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The rs-400 have the same sound quality as the twice the cost rs-42ii. Their appearance isn't as smooth as the rs42ii, but man do the rs-400 crank out grat sound quality at low and high volume, the wide dispersion technology bring all movies to life. Star Wars, transformers effects are brought to life.

Pros: Amazing sound, can't beat the price for your return, will handle large gauge wire for running long distance .

Cons: We're slightly difficult in install on my vaulted ceiling but found proper mount online.

completed my set

Tim from New York, NY on 6/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ten years ago, I started my speaker set up with a very lovely birthday gift -- Reference Book Shelf Speakers. My original intention was to purchase JBL. Before i made that purchase, i took with me three cd's: Tori Amos, Earthquakes; Mo' Better Blues Soundtrack; and Jeff Buckley, Mystery White Boy. The sound from JBL then were stronger on the low end. I tried Klipsch because they sat next, and the sound was unprecedentedly clear. Later, i added with the Center speaker to enhance movie experience and then shortly thereafter, the Sub woofer. Now these KlipschReference RS-400 surround sound speakers finally complete my speaker system. From the start with the book shelf speakers, I was concerned about how the slow growth would be reflected within the set, but the quality and construction of each speaker component are maintained. The set appears that I purchased the whole thing at once WHICH IS NOT A BAD THING. I simply enjoy the magnetic dust screens that I wished were part of this series construction from the beginning. Each on and off without the worry of breaking the plastic pins that the other speakers have -- this is the only difference. If I did not like klipsch from the beginning, i would not have completed the set with this purchase. The sound is great, the size is a bit big for what i would like but the sound is simply great. clear. effective. convincing. all of this and not watching a magnificently sound-produced movie. i can not wait to hear an enhanced soundtrack.

Pros: consistent quality for the series with past purchase

Cons: size.

Just hooked them up the other day and I am very happy with the sound quality.

Pros: Sound quality of the rs-42 at a much better price.

Cons: None really, some may prefer the rounded look of the rs-42 but I think these look fine.

Excellent Value / Performance Ratio

Bruce from Kernersville NC on 5/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been involved in audio for 43 years. I have owned mid- to high end audio gear . The Klipsch RS-400 surrounds meet all the important criteria of build and sound quality and excellent performance for dollars spent. I am using the surrounds with a Older Yamaha RX-V1 receiver for back and height channels. They require minimal power (high efficiency) and excellent dispersion characteristics (wide coverage of sound ) I am using these with the Klipsch Reference RC-7 center channel and I also have The RS-52 surrouds for comparison. The RS-52 has more bass and slightly fuller presentation and they both have the same voicing of sound. The RS-400 in my opinion at current pricing are a better value and Iwould take the difference in pricing and apply it to a better center or front channel speakers. These will mate well any of the Klipsch Reference speakers. You can purchase audio a lot of places in store or online. I chose Crutchfield because I had a product advisor who was very helpful and a competent audio advisor on the telephone. I was able to purchase with confidence knowing that I had the right product and was purchasing from the right audio / video retailer. Delivery was on time without any issues. Great product ,service, and and delivery.

Pros: Easy to place above doorways, high efficency and 8 ohm for use with a wide range of amplifiers, they perform extremely well for what they are designed for in surround applications. Has sufficent bass response for surround or height speakers. Remember they are not designed to compete with large bookshelf or tower speakers. Spend the savings vs more expensive surrounds on other upgraded equipment.

Cons: NONE

These speakers are excellent, I highly recommend them. The amount and depth of the sound out of this small package is amazing.

Pros: small package, room filling sound

Cons: heavy, need special brackets if you are going to hang them on the wall.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an older 5.1 system made up of a Yamaha RX-V1000, Klipsch KLF-20 Front, Klipsch RC-3 Center, and a pair of Bose 151 for the rears. I was looking to upgrade the Yamaha, when i saw the add for the RS-400's at such a great price. To make a long story short the RS-400's are incredible at filling in the rear channel's and I'll be keeping my old Yamaha for a little while longer!

Pros: Thw wedge design seems to bring a lot more out of the rear soundfield. To be able to get Klipsch sound quality for such a great price, what else can I say.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are absolutely awesome ! they are not designed to be bass heavy I knew that and you should too. They are brighter than my KG4's from the late 80's that I use for my fronts but the fact that they have apposing angels they deliver a huge sounding back field when used in surround sound but fill the rear of the room when just using stereo.

Pros: Efficient , Cost, Performance, size, name

Cons: well they don't do house chores and they keep me from doing mine :)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Canadian Special Edition speaker is another excellent product by Klipsch. I am using it in the surround-back channel positions, and it performs flawlessly and with awesome dispersion. Klipsch speakers when paired with the right audio sources always provide a great sound-stage for home theater and 2-channel operation.

Pros: Dynamic Range, Wide dispersion, high efficiency, construction, and wall mounting options.

Cons: 5-way binding posts could provide more depth for wall mount options.

Reference sound at a great price

Andy from Charlotte, NC on 3/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these along with the Klipsch RC-500 BK Center channel speaker and the Klipsch RB-600 speakers. I also have an older KSW-12 sub. All were driven by a Yamaha RX-V673 receiver. The imaging and clarity of these surrounds were amazing. The dual angle speaker design creates a better soundstage for music (especially when receiver is setup for 7 channel stereo) and video. The build quality is top notch and the speakers look great with or without the grilles. These are well worth the money vs. the RS-42ii.

Klipsch reference surround at a bargain price

AnthonyS from Santa Fe on 3/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of Klipsch RS400 4 months ago and loved them so much I purchased another pair last month. These speakers as with all the reference line are very efficient so you do not need a monster amplifier to drive them and are very clean and detailed. The design of the speakers create a more expansive sound field than standard direct radiating speakers so they do work very well as surround speakers. I am using a Marantz receiver and they match well with my Klipsch rf5iiI floorstanding speakers, and the rc52ii center speaker. These speakers are a special purchase and are a great value when compared to the similar rs42ii that is almost double the price with a different grill cover so get them while they last.

Pros: Very detailed ambient sound at a great price!

Cons: The grills are not as attractive as the Klipsch rs42ii but they are nice and you are getting a great price for essentially the same speaker.

Re-Badged RS-42 (original)

WhiskeyJ from Joliet,IL on 3/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased my first set (Scratch & Dent) on 12/03/13 and I couldn't really tell that they were anything other than "New Open Box". The second set,(also Scratch & Dent) were purchased two months later on 02/02/14. This set, although they both had minor (unnoticable when wall mounted) marks on their rears, were in WAY above acceptable condition for the unbelievable price that I paid for both pairs.. I have to agree with Nezil"s review that states that the RS-400 is just a re-badged Original RS-42. I also agree that I prefer the grill style of the RS-42 II, but at these prices, I'll learn to live with it These speakers have replaced four Klipsch Synergy S-2's as Surround and Rear Surrounds in my 9.1 system. I have to say that the improvement is most noticeable when playing High Resolution Audio Surround discs (SACD / DVD-Audio / Blu-Ray Audio). . I already have an all Klipsch based system of 11.1 speakers. My pioneer SC-1522-K can only drive 9.1 (either Hieghts OR Wides) but I'm looking to upgrade (a never ending process) to an Onkyo TX-NR929 which can output 11 channels with NeoX or Audyssey DSX. In conclusion, I am extremely satified with the RS-400 and in reality there is no "Real" difference between these and the RS-42 or the RS-42 II.

Pros: Great Sound, Great Price

Cons: Dated Styling

Nice for the price

mradmen from Cortland, IL on 2/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Given the smaller size of these I was not expecting too much but as a rear surround they have a remarkably rich sound. While not tiny they are small enough to satisfy my wifes requirements for small speakers.

Pros: Small size Good job producing immersive sound

Cons: Maybe to be expected they don't have much bottom end but maybe enough for a rear.

Klipsch RS 400 speakers

gginnc from Cherryville, NC on 2/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of Klipsch RS 400 surround speakers as a replacement for an existing pair of Klipsch SS.5 speakers. The speakers were installed at about seven feet above the floor and behind the listening area. Using the Audyssey feature of my Onkyo 609 receiver, I balanced the new speakers with the existing system- two Klipsch B3 R/L speakers and Klipsch RC 52 center w/ a Yamaha SW. The increase in bass was immediately noticeable and there was a presence that the SS.5 (4" woofer with two tweeters) simply did not have. Couldn't be happier. The SS.5 speakers were reinstalled as high speakers(at about 7 1/2 feet and at least two feet behind the R/L speakers) and the system rebalanced. Once again a noticeable and positive difference in additional sound presence. The little SS.5's directionality and limited base was not a problem--this seems a good application for these speakers. I also purchased a pair of RB 600 speakers as replacement for the B3's and will post after I have lived with them for awhile.

Nice surround speaker at a great price

Nezil from Sunnyvale, CA on 2/3/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My understanding is that the RS-400 is a re-badged RS-42 (Mk I); an already very well reviewed surround speaker system. I choose these speakers because I was looking for something at a relatively low cost that would still provide me with a nice surround effect at lower volumes. The dipole like design really does envelope you with surround effects, especially if placed correctly (along side the listener, rather than behind). I'm giving these four stars, because though I'm very satisfied with them, I'd hoped for a more significant improvement over what I was replacing. To be fair, I already had pretty good monopole surrounds, and perhaps was expecting too much. I've already paired these with the RC-500 center channel from the same range, and I'm now considering a pair of RB-41 speakers for the rear channels in a 7.1 setup.

Pros: Low cost for a high quality speaker High sensitivity means works well at lower volumes

Cons: Doesn't produce much bass Not small V Shape designed cover is not quite as elegant as the newer curved RS-42 II

A pretty good surround sound speaker for the money. They replaced some smaller Athena surround speakers. The Klipsch have Better Freq. range and sound dispersion through out the room. The Video system is a Marantz receiver, OPPO Blue Ray, B&W sub and Athena front, center and rear (7.1 system). Some day I will replace the front speakers, but I have another system strictly for Music.

Purchased these from Crutchfield and replaced smaller Onkyo surrounds. These were a special purchase and had a special low price to match. I couldn't pass these up! These have greatly improved sound from my 110 rms per channel Onkyo receiver! They distribute sound in two directions and play loud and clear with music and movies. Klipsch horns are key. They have a keyhole mount on back and are easily mounted with 1 screw. Buy these speakers. Great price and outstanding quality.

Klipsch surrounds

Mike from Richmond, va on 12/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced some older Reference series surrounds with 4 of these and they fit in seamlessly with a pair of klipsch synergy F3 towers, Klipsch ICON center channel and two Klipsch sub 10 subwoofers. A Yamaha Aventage A2000 7.2 receiver provides the power. The RS 400 provide a nice ambiance to the surround experience and they don't stand out or distract, except for when they should, like during a movie. I use the Dolby pro logic II mode for music a lot and they provide a nice surround experience with music.

Pros: Nicely integrates with other klipsch speakers. Klipsch build quality.

Cons: Little heavy, but the use of the proper mounting hardware for wall mounting takes care of that.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to complete the 5.1 surround. I have all klipsch speakers on a denon receiver and I love it. I mainly use the speakers for video games and I couldn't be happier. I also bought the sanus 31" stands and used Velcro to hold the speakers in place. The stand was great for keeping the speakers at ear level while sitting on the couch. I highly recommend these awesome speakers.

Pros: Clean, crisp, powerful, sleek

Cons: Kind of large

Product Research

Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): The Klipsch RS-400 delivers precise sonic detail through the careful positioning of two Tractrix Horn loaded titanium-diaphragm tweeters and two 4-inch woofers. By aligning the two horns at 90° with respect to each other, along with the two woofers, the RS-400 smoothly covers a 180° horizontal arc, allowing maximum placement flexibility. This unique Wide Dispersion Surround Technology delivers a new dimension of reality and convenience, and produces a smooth, seamless broad distribution of sound, which is the perfect vehicle for every surround format.

  • Tractrix Horn Tweeters: The RS-400 utilizes dual Tractrix Horns for a more genuine, lifelike sound. The square Tractrix Horns deliver a 90° wide by 60° high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. In addition, behind each horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet motor structure to provide a unique combination of precision, clarity and effortless dynamics.
  • Cerametallic Woofers: The dual 4" woofers of the RS-400 surround loudspeaker feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The 4" woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Klipsch Horn Technology: Klipsch employs Horn Technology to deliver these four principles of great sound.

  • High Efficiency: Klipsch speaker employs horn technology because the horn shape is perfect for accurate and dynamic sound transmission. Greater efficiency means lower distortion, which means maximum realism.
  • Dynamic Range: Klipsch horn technology reproduces the softest sounds with remarkable clarity and detail and the loudest sounds with no harshness or distortion.
  • Controlled Directivity: Unique Klipsch horn technology means speakers that more accurately direct sound and offer a more lifelike soundstage.
  • Flat Frequency Response: Klipsch horn technology delivers exactly the sound the artist intended, with no unnatural highs, mids, or lows.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 4" Cerametallic cone woofers and dual 1" titanium diaphragm compression drivers are mounted in a bass reflex enclosure which features two side-firing ports (one one each side). The twin side-firing ports eliminate turbulence noise, while increased baffle ribbing around the horn mouth dramatically improves acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a Matte Black vinyl and an aluminum front baffle. The RS-400's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.

Binding Posts: The Klipsch RS-400 is equipped with sturdy binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

Mounting: The Klipsch RS-400 features a back-panel keyhole slot for on-wall mounting and dual 1/4"-20 threaded inserts for attachment to popular adjustable wall/ceiling brackets and 3rd-party stands (sold separately). The speaker also come supplied with four self-adhesive rubber feet so you can sit the speaker on a stand or shelf securely. The rubber feet add approximately 0.3125" to the height of the speaker.

Placement: The Klipsch Wide Dispersion Surround Technology surround speakers in a typical 5.1-channel system can be mounted to side or rear walls. It is recommended that the RS-400 be mounted above the ear height of seated listeners (between 5' to 7' above the floor).

Q & A

Customer Q&A

2 questions already asked

I mounted mine on drywall walls using a single pan head screw each using the keyhole mount at the top rear of the speaker. One of them was into a handy stud behind the drywall, the other alas had no stud at the appropriate distance, so I used a screw-in zinc drywall anchor and I have had no problems. Because of the protrusion distance of the keyhole mounting plate, it is necessary to put the stick-on plastic/rubber feet on the back of the speaker - the friction additionally makes sure that there is no slip'n'slide side to side. Also, when mounted this way, the connection posts are close enough to the wall so that speaker cable terminated with regular banana plugs cannot be used - you need spades or pins. (or bare wire if you just don't care!) [ Iain  Jun 05, 2014 ]
Unfortunately, I am the wrong person to answer this question. I have a seven speaker set-up and this speaker is used in the middle between the front and rear speakers. Since m room is open on one side and a patio door on the other, I have them mounted on speaker stands which works quite well for me. [ B  Jun 05, 2014 ]
It has mounting holes on the back that you just use screws in the wall to hold it up. No Extra brackets needed. [ MIKE  Jun 05, 2014 ]

These have a keyhole type hanger on back. This works just fine with a sturdy screw in the wall with an anchor or directly into a stud. [ ROBERT  Jun 05, 2014 ]
Klipsch rs-400 surround speakers very great. I think it's money well spent ' [ BRETT  Jun 05, 2014 ]
Chris, the speaker comes with holes for mounting already. There is no need to buy brackets of any sort. Just hang it up on a strong nail as they have some weight to them [ STEVE M  Jun 05, 2014 ]
You can use a wall anchor and a screw to hang this speaker on the wall since it has a keyhole on the top rear of the speaker. Since the keyhole is on the top rear of the speaker, I had to place a small piece of wood on the bottom rear to keep the speaker straight.along the wall. [ BENJAMIN  Jun 05, 2014 ]
not sure what you are looking for but, yes I have this pair of speakers and I have them at ear height siting on the couch. the wedge shape gives you all the effects you could ever ask for [ TOM J  Jun 05, 2014 ]
The Pinpoint AM24 bracket offers multiple wall-mounting options for traditional satellite speakers. And hold 12 pounds, these speakers weight is 11.9 pounds, it feet and make the mount practically invisible. [ MARIO  Jun 05, 2014 ]
I didn't mount my klipsh RS400 on the wall or ceiling. Instead I bought the stands so the speakers themselves are about ear height. THEY ARE AWESOME!!! And oh I used a bit of Velcro on the bottoms of the speakers so they don't slide or move. [ wayne  Jun 05, 2014 ]
Honest I had ordered it for my surrounds, but they r too heavy to mount on my drop ceiling.. So I tried it for my front left and right.. And.. Am loving it.. Have it placed on the top of the unit.. No brackets/stands. [ SANJAY  Jun 05, 2014 ]
I purchased 2 sets of these, one set (R &L rear channel) I used the provided wall mount. For the 2nd set (R & L rear wide channel) I modified a set of ceiling mounts I had purchased from Best Buy years ago and attached them to the speakers using the two threaded holes on the backside of the speaker.
