Lose the loud commercials, gain spacious sound

I remember hearing years ago that TV stations were no longer allowed to crank up the volume during commercial breaks. Well, they seem as loud and annoying as ever. Thankfully, ZVOX's “output leveling” mode tames startling spikes in volume when ads come on.

For the sounds you actually do want to hear, ZVOX uses special processing to spread out the sound. The AV200 offers a nice simulated surround effect that makes shows, movies, and sports pleasant to watch.

J from Port Ludlow, WA on 1/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was no help in resolving my problem with hearing speech in TV and streaming video programs. In fact, irrespective of how it was adjusted, it failed to produce sound that was better than the speakers in my flat screen TV. And, as a sound bar (without the Accu enabled) it sounds terrible. The judgments reflected here are not just those of an individual with diminished hearing; our in-house focus group was unanimous in it's opinion that this product sucks.

Works exactly as advertised. Super easy to install on any flat screen TV made in the last 10 years. Plugged in the optical cord then added power. Done. Bought it for my 87 year old Mother who was having trouble hearing the words clearly on various TV shows (news, sitcoms, etc). She noticed the difference the second I put it in Accuvoice mode.Watched the video to have the her Dish remote control the speaker. Easy. Programmed the Dish remote in about 15 seconds. We tried the surround modes and they were adequate -ish....but I consider those modes an added benefit because the AccuVoice was the reason i bought it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this soundbar due to profound hearing loss and not being able to understand speech when watching TV. This product works for me that is why I am giving it 5 stars. It does what the description says it will do. For anyone with hearing loss, I would recommend this soundbar. Keep in mind however, this product has small speakers and does not have a wide frequency range. Bass is almost non existent. It does have a subwoofer output jack. If you are looking for a booming sound stage experience, I would not recommend it. If you have hearing loss, I think it is probably the best option.

Pros: Improves voice clarity for people with hearing loss. Easy to set up. Sounds better than TV speakers

Cons: Lacks bass frequencies.

The ZVOX is a great speaker and wonder of wonders, very compact so fits well in small spaces . It additionally is very easy to set up. From my 32" TV I now have full and glorious sound and clear dialogue, better than from any other much larger TV I've ever had. I can't recommend this product highly enough.

William from Fresno, CA on 9/4/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was happy to set up this compact sound bar since it was no hassle at all. Came with digital/optical cable for my TV. I like the control remote with several choices - bass emphasis, volume, mute. The bright readout on the soundbar is large and easy to read. Sound quality is good and plenty loud for us hard-of-hearing listeners. Spoken words are very easy to understand.

Pros: Set-up is a breeze. Sound is clear. Good choice of controls on the remote. Nice looking.

Cons: Would be nice to incorporate into other remotes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife and I have been struggling for years to hear and understand dialogue on our TV. Our struggles increased with DVD movies and we missed most of the dialogue on British shows in particular. I read a review of ZVOX in the Wall Street Journal and that convinced me to give it a try. When the ZVOX arrived I disconnected the sound bar we were using and had the ZVOX hooked up in 5 minutes. The dialogue improvement was immediate and dramatic. We are very happy with this equipment. We've actually gone back to re-watch movies that we had watched before the ZVOX - wow what a difference.

Pros: Ease of installation. Great dialogue enhancement.

It really works! TV voices, especially male, were hard to understand. I don't hear high tones as well as I used to, and adjusting the tone to reduce bass and increase treble made all the difference. I think TV speakers increase bass, because I have no trouble hearing deep male voices on the radio.

Outstanding product

Mike from Saint Charles, IL on 4/5/2017

I have purchased a number of products from Crutchfield recently and tried to get one of these but they were out of stock. I went to a competitor to get one and they shipped it out in the flimsy manufacturers box only, not packed in a shipping box like Crutchfield does. The UPS truck must've had a leaky roof or the box was near the back door and it was a rainy day and they delivered it soaking wet. Even the instructions were soggy. I was going to send it back but I took a chance and hooked it up and I'm glad I did. It really helps with dialogue. My favorite room for TV only is very live. Hardwood floors, a bank of 6 large windows behind the seating area and a huge stone fireplace, plus a 14 foot ceiling and leather seating. Too reflective for serious listening. The Accuvoice gave excellent results and allows dialogue to be easily understood. I hope Crutchfield gets them in again soon. I'd like another and will not use that other competitor.

Pros: Really helps hearing dialogue

Cons: None yet. I know Zvox was having some manufacturing issues earlier in the year with a lot of failures. I'm hoping mine won't be one of them.

Clear voices!

Walter from Greensboro, NC on 3/10/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried the Bose and the Yamanha under-the-TV speakers, and while both improved the sound significantly, neither really did well clarifying voices. While not quite as strong on the bass, the ZVOX did improve dialong a lot. Plus, it learned from my remote very easily and it turns on and off and adjusts volume using the TV remote. Five stars for the ZVOX!

Pros: Improves clarity of voices. All we have to do now is get movie directors to improve the quality of voices in their products! Voices in todays movies are much harder to understand than 20+ year old movies.

Cons: Bass improvement not dramatic but much better than the TV (not hard to beat)

Disappointed

Robert from Belton, SC on 2/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very disappointed. I connected it to a 1998 Panasonic CRT type TV, which has very good internal speakers. No matter how I adjusted the ZVOX unit, the sound was not as good. For speech, music, sound effects, etc. Worse, there was no improvement in clarity of speech, dialogue, etc. It often sounded "tinny" to both of us. Older movies and TV shows, such as TCM, sounded really harsh. One positive was that the ZVOX support people were very good. It is somewhat difficult to program another remote to operate the ZVOX unit as the instructions are kind of vague. You have about 5 seconds to press the correct buttons.

Pros: Great support from ZVOX. Easy set-up.

Cons: Doesn't improve sound and even makes it worse.

High Frequency Hearing Loss

Richard from Napa, CA on 1/12/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have high frequency hearing loss. I bought the AccuVoice speaker so that I would be able to hear the TV with out having it on max volume. This was the only way I could hear what the actors were saying. This was particularly true for people with British accents. Since connecting the speaker to my TV, I set the volume much lower and can hear and understand everything. The AccuVoice speakers work very well, indeed.

Pros: I can hear and understand everything

Cons: Lost the big theater sound.

I don't do reviews but....this thing does everything as advertised! I'm a little hard of hearing in the 3 to 4k Hz range which apparently is where voices come across in TV land cause I was having to crank sound up to figure out what was being said and then get blasted out when the commercials came in somehow this thing clarifies the speech without excessive volume and does a great job at leveling volume against the Commercials it's great that it learns your TV controls so no need for another remote Little tricky figuring out that I had to put TV in fixed volume mode for all to play nice together Overall a bit pricey but for once you get what you pay for

Pros: Volume control, vocal clarity, convenience of single remote

Perfect Fit

David from Birmingham, AL on 12/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this speaker system for my mother who is 89. She has difficulty hearing and the down-firing speakers on the new TV's are horrible. Needed was a solution that was simple, that generously improved volume, dynamic range. The Accuvoice feature is also there for audio-boost when needed. The AV200 fit nicely in a spare cabinet equipment slot centered under the TV, it paired seamlessly with the existing remote and most importantly Mom gave me a big hug and a kiss. Great soundbar for tight spots with no sacrifice in sound.

Pros: compact, easy set-up, good sound

Cons: none.

Max from Minneapolis, MN on 11/3/2016

I purchased this directly through Zvox, with great hopes for sound improvement over my current Vizeo sound bar. I made a comparison between both units listening to the same dialogue difficult for me to hear clearly. The Zvox sounded tinny and had a weak dynamic range with no better clarity then the Vizeo which was actually a far better sounding unit. Save your money is my suggestion and look elsewhere.

Product Research

Features

AccuVoice TV Speaker: The AccuVoice TV Speaker (AV200) is specifically designed to produce room-filling sound, while rendering crystal clear dialog. It uses three high-performance speakers, an acoustically stable aluminum cabinet, and a 30-watt Class D digital amplifier to create warm, natural, realistic sound. Aluminum allows ZVOX to make the speaker very small, but still acoustically correct, because the metal is strong and has very low resonance.

Built-in Hearing-Aid Technology: This tiny TV speaker utilizes  ZVOX's proprietary (patent-pending) AccuVoice technology to solve the dialog clarity problem with many of today's flat-panel TVs. AccuVoice mimics the function of a hearing aid by isolating voice frequencies and lifting them out of background sounds. ZVOX's advanced digital processor analyzes TV programs and movie soundtracks, and when it detects voices it instantly activates computer algorithms that bring voices forward. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized. You'll hear crystal-clear dialogue, even at lower volumes.

PhaseCue Virtual Surround Sound: The AccuVoice TV Speaker (AV200) uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. You choose from 3 PhaseCue Virtual Surround Sound modes.

  • Surround 1: Low virtual surround effect and strong vocals for enhanced vocal clarity.
  • Surround 2: Moderate virtual surround effect and moderate vocals for most program material.
  • Surround 3: Strong virtual surround effect and moderate vocals for movies.
Note: AccuVoice cannot be used in conjunction with a PhaseCure Virtual Surround Sound mode.

Output Leveling: If you've ever been blasted out of your chair by a too-loud commercial, or by a cable channel that's twice as loud as another channel, you'll love the Output Leveling (OL). Just push the "OL" button and a sophisticated compression system takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on.

Note: AccuVoice and Output Leveling can be activated simultaneously.

Bass & Treble: The ZVOX AV200 speaker has independent bass & treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Digital & Analog Inputs: The ZVOX AccuVoice TV Speaker has one optical (toslink) digital input and one analog stereo minijack (3.5mm input. The digital input will support 2ch PCM only (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).

Sub Output: The The ZVOX AV200 speaker features a minijack (3.5mm) subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer if you want more bass out of the system. The powered sub should have a line-level input and a built-in low pass crossover.

Remote Control: The ZVOX AV200 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the speaker. The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, surround effect level, bass & treble, as well as AccuVoice and Output Leveling functions. The AV200 can also be programmed to respond to your TV or satellite/cable remote control. Once programmed, you can control volume, mute, input, and power with your TV or satellite/cable remote. There are also Power, Volume, and Input control buttons on one end of the soundbar speaker.

Note: Many newer TVs are coming with RF remotes and don't offer IR functionality. In this case, you would not be able to program the soundbar and TV remote to work together.

Hidden Display: The AccuVoice TV Speaker (AV200) features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass, treble, and PhaseCue (virtual surround); plus shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling or AccuVoice features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or side-panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Mounting Options: The ZVOX AccuVoice TV Speaker measures only 17.0625" (w) x 3.0" (h) x 3.3125" (d), and can fit almost anywhere. The speaker can be placed on a table top or wall-mounted using its integrated keyhole slots.

For voice boost, and better sound from TV, and small size [ PK  Sep 15, 2016 ]
It appears to be a speaker that will aid my wife and me in understanding words in movies, etc. We have a ZVOX 320 soundbar that we use with a small TV in the kitchen and we are very pleased with it. We were so pleased with Crutchfield when we purchased our TV ten years ago that I thought I could look to it for help for the current situation. Thanks for not disappointing me. Robert [ Robert C.  Sep 06, 2016 ]

3 questions already asked

If your receiver has a headphone output jack, I believe that would work. Be aware that the ZVOX also has a volume control on it's remote. Hope this helps. [ Frank  Dec 05, 2017 ]
I am very sorry that I don't know the answer to your question. I purchased this for my father-in-law last Christmas and connected it directly to the television speakers. He is 93 and thinks this is the greatest thing in the world! [ Judy  Dec 04, 2017 ]
No on both. The ZVOX is amplified, with no ARC. It will connect though the PCM output on your TV. [ Ethel  Dec 04, 2017 ]
I do not have a Yamaha receiver. Connects through the TV speaker system. [ ROBERT L  Dec 04, 2017 ]
The way the AV200 works is to lower the bass, raise the treble and combine all channels so hearing impaired people can hear better, in effect cancelling out any surround action. It can be used as a center channel speaker. I prefer some surround action, however some people can't listen that way. The AV200 has an option also to keep volume levels the same for all viewing (commercials are not louder) and that is worth it. I am using it for TV sound for my mom, sounds somewhat tinny, but she can hear it better than the TV speakers. [ Andrew  Jan 10, 2017 ]
Can't do it. This is a Powered unit. You need a Soundbar designed to work with a surround sound receiver. I know that Def Tech makes one. Good luck. [ Ethel  Jan 09, 2017 ]
You can plug the AV200 into the optical output of your Pioneer and use both at the same time. But I think you will lose the advantage of the AV200's emphasizing speech frequencies. [ flanso  Jan 09, 2017 ]
Maybe, this unit does offer a feature that seems to project dialogue. I also am a Hearing Aid user. It is without question 100% better than the speakers in my 60" Vizio. ZVOX builds a outstanding piece. Hope this helps. [ Ethel  Nov 28, 2016 ]
I also have a Samsung TV and bought this product to improve the poor sound quality that's common with flat screen TVs. I would recommend this product which I find has helped lift voices above background noises and music. The Accuvoice setting dramatically increases the clarity of voices on programs with poor audio quality. My brother-in-law has hearing loss and he thought the Accuvoice sound was clear. This product also has adjustable treble/bass and surround settings that also help improve overall sound quality. It is easy to install. I think your TV has an optical digital output jack, but if it doesn't, you can use the analog signal cable that is also included with the sound bar. ZVOX has a good reputation and this product has received favorable reviews. For the price, it's a great value. [ Gary  Nov 27, 2016 ]
Dear Robert B., My wife and I are both "hard of hearing." We have a wonderful, and very expensive, Panasonic 50" plasma TV. It has wonderful speakers--but--we still have difficulty understanding the words of a movie, and especially the words of the sports announcers. In July or August or this year I read about a new soundbar by ZVOX to be on the market in September. It was one advertised as one using hearing aid technology. We, as many other "older people," have difficulty with hearing people with crowd noise in the background. Our hearing is diminished severely in the high frequency range. Well, as is said, "To make a long story short," on September 4th I ordered that new soundbar--from Crutchfields. It is the zvox AV 200 AccuVoice. To say that we are happy with it is an understatement. We are thrilled! Robert C. [ Robert C.  Nov 27, 2016 ]
I wear hearing aids too. My Samsung TV is connected to the ZVOX AV200 through the optical audio output. I have it sitting in front of the TV and use "Accu" or "SD 1" mode for voice boost. Seems to work well at the volume setting of 7 for me. Depending on your hearing, the volume setting may be different. Some voices sound a little tinny but I can hear them fine. You may also want to check out Bose an Yamaha. [ PK  Nov 26, 2016 ]
