A low-profile, one-box solution
This one-piece system houses five 3-3/4" full-range speakers, two high-output 6-1/2" woofers, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. The 580 is designed to serve as a base for most flat-panel TVs with screen sizes from 40" to 65".

Dialogue welcome. Blaring commercials — not so much.
If you can't hear the voices clearly, you miss out on the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives new clarity and prominence to human voices. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats when they go to a commercial break. Thanks to the Output Leveling feature, the 580 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax and enjoy the show.

Convenient features
The SoundBase 580 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. Its front-panel display lights up from behind the front cloth surround then disappears when not in use. And it learns the commands of your current TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

Absolutely love it. Finally after 3 years I can understand dialogue on a 60" TV. I bought this after seeing all the rave reviews, they were right on the mark. I bought an open box item, so it had a few nicks & a spot that looks a little melted, but that didn't affect the performance at all.

Pros: Crutchfield was fast with delivery and it was packed very well. There was little chance of damage during delivery. I will definitely buy from them again and recommend to my friends & family. Easy set up, heavier than I expected, so I had to wait for help, but easy hook-up.

Verdict Still Out

Cat from Covington, LA on 9/3/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed and programmed according to instructions. Effective at improving dialogue. However, the unit inconsistently responded to on/off and volume increase or decrease. Had to walk to unit often in order to get it to respond. This happened more often than not. Recently the unit would not respond to remote, we turned it on at the unit, and the sound was extremely loud even though display read "5". We turned unit off. Turned it back on and sound is totally distorted. Since unit is 9 months old, Crutchfield advised we should ship back to ZVOX. ZVOX says it is a simple fix, we need to replace LED, which they will provide free. So I will advise further once we try this fix. In the meantime, don't recommend it.

Pros: Improved dialogue.

Cons: Inconsistent performance and failure.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sound box works great. I had previously purchased a Samsung and then a Polk Audio sound bar to use with my Samsung TV. Both improved the sound, but the dialogue was still not clear. Saw the reviews on this sound bar and decided to give it a shot. Glad I did, sound is crisp and clear. Working with my DirecTV remote was important to me. I hate having to use multiple remotes and this sound bar allows me to control it with the Direct TV remote! I would have given it 5 stars if the other inputs would have been in the back of the unit instead of the front. I don't love the cords showing in the front when used with an iTouch.

Pros: Sound, dialogue clarity

Cons: Input location

Very easy set up. Remote is very simple to use. Instructions are simple. Was easily paired with my new DirectV Genie remote. Clarity, sound, and overall performance I am very satisfied with.

Pros: Simple to setup and use.

Cons: Its big, be sure you have a area large enough for it to sit. Also allow room behind for plugs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this speaker to replace my 6.1 surround sound Onkyo system. The Onkyo system still sounded good, but I have always had a problem hearing what is being said, because of all the other effects. I needed something that would accommodate my 60 inch television. I went to a high end retail store, and listened to everything they had. I discovered for $2100, I could replace my system with one that fit my needs. So then I started looking at the sound bars. The "beloved" Bose 1 SR is nice, don't get me wrong... But, it's not $1500 nice. So I left with no item. The next day, I found the ZVOX online, and for the price, I gave it a shot. It was delivered the very next day. I sat my tv on top of it, hooked up my Onkyo subwoofer, and turned it on..... Oh my! What a great surprise! It sounds better than my whole surround sound ever did! There is also a button on the remote that when pressed makes the center voice channel loud and clear! Does it sound as good as the $2100 system? No. It's not a surround sound system people! Does it sound as good as the "beloved" Bose 1 SR? I think it is pretty close! The difference is, you can actually hear the center speaker. That has been the biggest complaint with the Bose. For the money, you will not find a better sound bar. Also, it is simple to use. Anyone who is not an "audiophile" will be happy with this. Just understand, that it is not a complete surround sound!

Pros: Great Price Subwoofer Output Television sits directly on top Great Sound Simple to use

Cons: NONE

Better than I thought.

A Real Ear Saver

JohnA from West Yellowstone, MT on 6/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product in an effort to overcome difficulty hearing some of the dialog on my favorite TV programs. I have some hearing loss as diagnosed by my audiologist. A few months ago, my wife and I purchased a 65" HDTV from Samsung. They were nice enough to throw in a free low end sound bar with the deal, but it made it so hard to hear dialog that we just defaulted to using the built-in TV speakers which were only marginally better than the sound bar. I looked to CNET for advice on my problem and was ready to buy a conventional stereo amp and speakers (for about $1200) to improve the situation. When I described the issue to the Crutchfield advisor, he suggested trying the ZVOX Z-Base 555. I looked at the problem, and it seemed like a good idea. I ordered the 580, since I still have some testerone left. The dialog enhancement setting really works, and it helps us to understand almost every word the first time through - even with one or two fans (from the heater and humidifier) running at the same time in the living room. The only glitch I experienced was the ZVOX remote did not work properly right out of the box. I contacted tech support, and we found that the buttons on the right side of the remote did not work. Rather than delay solving the problem by digging a remote out of a new unit, they sent me an entire new unit from which I removed the fully functional remote. Returned everything else to Crutchfield at their expense.

Pros: Great sound for TV and music. Can attach my iPhone through the front input jack.

Cons: It's pretty big, but I knew that when I ordered.

The sound is great, good bass, and the dialogue enhancement really helps

Pros: VERY easy to hook up--only one cable, or was it 2 ? Sits under the TV, --no sound bar and subwoofer on the floor.

Cons: Instruction manual--not much there, --to figure out how to program the universal remote we use for the TV,--the electronics of the illuminated window and interface could be improved.

Looking to improve the TV's sound system wouldn't take much, but this unit really steps up to the plate. We haven't had the system very long but long enough to listen to Brit Floyd on PBS, we were impressed and surprised by both. Installation was a snap.

Pros: Sound is impressive and the unit was way easy to hook up to the TV. No complaints as of a couple of weeks since installation.

Cons: Could use a small light on front of unit to indicate that it is on.

Great Solution For HDTV Sound

Luke from Sacramento, CA on 2/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently bought a 60" HDTV and realized something had to be done to improve the terrible sound quality that comes out of these new LED/LCD TV stock speakers. I didn't want to get into the hassle and work of getting a complete surround sound system, but did want something that had decent sound for Blu Rays and sports. After researching options, I realized a platform sound bar was going to be the simplest solution. This product was on the higher end on sales price for this type of product, but it was money well spent. The sounds on tv shows, movies, and sports are all greatly improved. Dialog comes through clear, nice bass levels on the internal subs. This product is also great for music, and I can actually use my Pandora app that comes with my Smart TV now. It was easy to set up (no mounting or figuring out if it would block the remote signal as would be required with traditional sound bars) and I was going in minutes. I placed it in my entertainment stand as opposed to directly under the tv stand, and I think that makes for a cleaner look. You can program your Cable/Satellite remote to control volume which is nice. It is certainly not surround sound, you'll only get that with an actual surround system, so don't buy this product thinking you'll get anything close to surround sound. If, however, you're looking for good quality sound improvement over your tv speakers and simplicity in setup and in functionality, look no further than this ZVOX! Very satisfied!

Pros: Easy to setup, no worrying about mounting, can place directly under television as a platform or in your entertainment stand, good quality sound and a vast improvement over HDTV stock speakers

Cons: Nothing major. The surround mode is not truly anything close to actual surround, but this is actually the case with all sound bars, so the product doesn't really lose any points for me on that front.

WE are very satisfied with the ZVOX Base 580. The dialogue enhancement feature by itself justufies the purchase particulaly if someone in the house has hearing difficulty. We replaced a Polk Audio sound bar which was a very good addition to a modern flat screen with terrible speakers. ZVOX base adjustment is also easier.

Pros: Dialogue enhancement and ease of adjustments. Good speaker sound.

Cons: It's a large, slightly heavy box

HD sound

Anonymous from Grand Rapids, MI on 1/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

ZVOX does for sound what HD does for viewing. While watching Mad Men, we could hear office type writers, and street trafic - sound that was not perceivable with the TV speakers. The ZVOX speakers add another dimension to TV viewing.

Pros: Great sound. Easy set up.

Cons: The sound is superior when an optical cable is used.

Ron from North Fork on 1/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a Samsung PN60F8500 and knew I wanted to enjoy more than just the picture. Speakers on the new televisions are mediocre at best. I had to put the television on furniture so this has worked good as a base and most other sound bars would block the bottom of the television. Second, I am hard of hearing so I was looking for something that would help me understand what people were saying. The dialog enhancement is as advertised. If you are hard of hearing and tired of asking someone what they said all of the time, this is the way to go. I am no longer asking my wife what they said. The remote enables you to quickly change to full feature if you don't need the dialog and want to get more of the experience. There is one setting that pretty much covers both areas The system provides plenty of detail for a sound bar. It isn't surround sound but great at what it does. I couldn't get DirecTV remote off and on to program with this unit. After contacting Crutchfield and ZVOX (yes and very accommodating) I learned it only works with one button control.

Pros: Able to understand what people are saying. Sports, movies or news. and the easiest piece of equipment I have installed. Support from Crutchfield and ZVOX was great and helpful support staff also.

Cons: If you have DirecTV, you can not program the on and off button with the ZVOX.

ZVOX Z-Base 580

JamesR from Alpharetta, GA on 1/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Big sound that comes from a compact all-in-one cabinet which compared to other sound bars actually looks like a piece of furniture wherever you place it. Attaching a subwoofer is truly optional unless you want a bigger punch.

Pros: Dialogue enhancement, especially for Seniors!

Cons: Not the best choice for surround sound. Toslink digital optical audio as well as coax digital audio cables are NOT included - must be purchased separately.for best sound results.

WOW Great Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound ,setup with direct TV, took all of 3 min.-I listened to several other sound bars at retail stores but none of them come close to this system. Thanks to the staff at Crutchfield for suggesting zvox and the sale price was the clincher. Shipping was fast and I have learned to contact them for accurate and professional advise for all stereo purchases.

Pros: easy set up with direct TV (direct tv remotes are the worst learning remotes ever)great sound - great price-

Cons: Only issue I had was the newer TV's work with coxial or optical cable only, zvox comes with analog cables --fyi Crutchfield rep tried to get me to buy a optical cable- TV was in another location and i rolled the dice??????

Great for enhancing your TV's sound!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received the ZVOX in 1 business day and had it out of the box and plugged in and working within 10 minutes. This unit is very easy to set up. Overall this is a good product and I really enjoy the enhanced dialogue features and it makes voices really stand out in any situation. However, when I plugged in my iPhone, the music playback was not as impressive. I knew that going into buying this product after reading other reviews so I wasn't too disappointed. My main objective was to be able to hear people speaking clearly without having really loud ambient noise and that is where this product shines. For what little bit of music we will be listening to on this unit it will be just fine. The unit itself is very sturdy and I'm confident that it will hold my 65" LED TV just fine without compromising the integrity of the unit. Regarding the virtual surround, it's ok. If I wanted a true surround sound then I would have installed my current set up of 5.1 speakers but this is a much simpler solution and sounds great for TV or Movies! One last comment, it was much larger in size than I had anticipated, not a problem for us though.

Pros: Ease of set up / Voice quality / Simple Remote

Cons: Music quality, this is the reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. Solid product though!

I can't say enough for my entire experience. The Crutchfield people without exception have been fantastic. I've had the sound box installed and operating for only a couple of days but I am extremely happy. It was everybit as easy to install and set up as I had been told. The sound results are incredible.

Pros: The sound is incredible. set up was every bit as easy as I had been told. There have been no disappointments.

Cons: None at this time.

Good too Go

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You buy this product, unbox it, take about 15 - 30 minutes too completely set it up, and you will be, All Good Too Go. This product is a perfect example of the fact that, sometimes, less is more. Sounds great, fits in and works well. Note : can be used for Bluetooth , with an inexpensive ($30) adapter. There are 5 inputs that all work well and add a bit of versatility too the overall possible uses. Then again, if you just want to do a ONE CABLE hook up with the TV, you really cannot do better then this Zvox unit. Crutchfield & Zevox, a Winning combination.

Pros: Quality of Sound. Simplicity & ease of setup & use. Sale price was real nice, indeed.

Cons: Slightly pedestrian finish. NO Multiple HDMI hook up , and Pass Thru.

Cons: None so far!

John B from Chicago on 11/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My parents had a difficult time understanding dialogue and constantly complained about the vapid sound from their flat screen tv. My brother and I ordered the ZVOX 580 as an early X-Mas gift. They were amazed at the improvement in the vocal clarity of the dialogue and the all around "fuller" sound. They also love the fact that the ZVOX turns on and off right along with the tv, so using it requires no extra effort from them.

Pros: Vastly improved dialogue All around better sound Ease of Hookup

Cons: None I can think of

I have hearing aids and have always had trouble understanding speech on the TV. With the Zvox 580 I can understand every word of every show, without my using my hearing aids. This was the perfect answer for me.

Pros: easy to set up, just plug in the optical from the TV and you are good to go.

Very good simple sound system

Scottie from Ontario, OR on 11/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am NOT an audio expert, but I know the difference between good and bad sound. Very good sound with just enough adjustment on remote to suit personal taste. Hooked up a powered NHT sub and now it literally feels and sounds like a theater experience, without the rear surround (Cannot run full volume on sub or the 580 because it's too loud). I have tested it for 10 days and am ordering another unit right now after I finish this review. I used to have a true surround system with multiple speakers (too much hassle and mess with wires and multiple remotes) and IMO this is the only way to go unless you have to have rear surround. Everything is controlled with the Direct TV remote, so much nicer than fumbling with multiple remotes..

Pros: So simple to set up, it really lowers the commercials that normally blare out.

Cons: This is really not a con because you cannot get true rear sound without physically having speakers in the rear.

Now I can understand the dialog from my TV programs

DonW from Ridgecrest, CA on 9/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with the improvement with the quality of the voice. The unit also provides good overall sound across the desired frequency range, Bass is good for TV and not overbarring. I like the contol that is provided with the handheld controller. Both myself and wife are elderly and have had difficulty in understanding the dialog from today's TV. This unit has made watching today's TV program much more enjoyable. Loved the easy setup also. Good bang for the bucks!

Pros: Improves voice clarity. Easy to install and setup. Good adjustments with the hand controller.

Cons: none I have not found anything other than want I expected from my researh before buying.

Pros: Easy set up Easy to train your TV or cable remote to run it Good sound for a single box, especially for football

Cons: None--it's a good value for the money. Is a big footprint but that's ok.

Xvox Z Base 580

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was a little taken back by the size of this unit. Believe me when I say this unit "kicks butt!" I have an open living area that is large and I would have been very happy with a smaller and less powerful sound bar. Anything comparable would have cost more than double.

Pros: What is different with the Zvox is it clarifies speech making the voices clearer and sharper. For those who have hearing problems, this would certainly help plus give you a stronger bass and an all around better sound quality.

Cons: None so far.

Great for voice clarity. I live in an apartment and I wanted to improve the voice clarity as well as the sound quality. I did not want the thump of a subwoofer. If you want 5.1 or 7.1 buy a home theater. If you want to understand what they say on the British mystery theater then buy this.

Pros: Enhances the voices and improves the sound quality

Cons: It is large and it is not Home Theater sound

ZVOX SoundBase 580

Phillip H from Pleasant Hill, CA on 8/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker system sounded great but I had issues with connecting my older plasma TV through it. When watching TV and changing channels, the volume control between channels was not consistently the same. One station would be to low and one would have to increase the volume and the next station would be way to loud and one would have to lower the volume. . I had to use the 580 due to the 70+ pound TV and large base.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Large speaker system that is oviously looking right at you and is not a sleek as the other models.

Mineu from LA on 8/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems to be good product, but I have a few bugs to be worked out. I keep having to coordinate the mute button on the controller with my TV controller as they frequently don't work together. Also, the sound will blast out on occasion when I change chanels. Otherwise, I'm happy with the sound, even for my elderly ears. The unit looks nice under the TV , and is a nice addition. Plan to contact Crutchfield for advice about bugs.

Pros: Great sound, well-made, easy to set up.

Cons: Have to keep coordinating mute buttons on both unit remote and TV remote. Occasionaly sound blasts out when I change channels.

Perfect Solution

DanW from San Diego, CA on 5/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound bar is a PERFECT solution for a small to mid-size room. The price doesnt offend because in my opinion this is a best in class, product. The higher wattage output for this model is worth it, especially in conjunction with the dialog enhancement. Though I am not an audiophile, I am a huge electric blues/rock fan, and the highs and lows do not disappoint; and the sound is 'punchy' in the middle, filling the room. This model also has an optical, coaxial, and rca inputs, allow for connection of a bunch of devices - worked out of the box with 10 minutes of routing cables on the TV stand from the devices.

Pros: Sound quality is fantastic, and fills a 20 x 30 living space more than adequately. Ease of setup & use, I love the remote. I have not yet tried to train the unit with the cable or tv remote - having four remotes doesn't bother me, it's actually kind of okay for organization

Cons: The unit is pretty darn big and heavy, so, make sure you have adequate space on your stand, or wherever you are going to place it. The depth is substantial, and you need room in the back to route in the cables.

EZ way to instantly UPGRADE sound from a Flat Screen

As title states; This unit has full rich sound and the Dialogue-Enhancer really brings voices to life -- Unit has 5 front firing speakers and 2 down firing subs built in, I added an external sub just for added punch, but most shoppers would be completely satisfied with the low range of the built-in subs -- By it, you won't regret it !!! Stevie B.

Pros: Way EZ to hook-up and use

Cons: None

I had trouble with TV voice clarity for a long time. Had tried various hearing aids, but the real answer was the 580 Zvox. I no longer look at my wife and say....."What did he/she say???" It is marvelous for me.....and for my wife!! Crutchfield is an outstanding company and we will deal with them again....just like having the helping hand of a friend!!

Great sound, but large footprint

dm from New York, NY on 12/5/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX 580 does everything that the critics say in terms of sound. Like others, I was looking for a soundbar for our 46" flatscreen. Like many other city dwellers, our TV is located in our living room, so setting up a surround sound system was really out of the question for a room that is not dedicated to TV watching. I compared the ZVOX with other soundbar solutions but almost without exception the ZVOX came out far ahead in the ratings. What is only hinted at, however, is the size of the box itself. While elegantly designed to not draw attention to itself, it's still pretty huge: 36" wide, 16.5" deep and 5" tall. From my perspective, the sound is worth the tradeoff but it's hard to appreciate how large it is until it's sitting on your credenza.

Great musical quality sound. The theater surround is above average but the center channel voicing is sometimes a bit unreal. Voice volume equalizing is also a problem issue.

Pros: Music quality

Cons: Voice volume equalizing on broadcast TV

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been having an increasingly hard time understanding the dialog from my plasma tv.. I came upon this unit while looking for a solution. The setup would have been very easy were it not for my Pioneer 5070HD tv. I set up everything as per instructions and connected the 580 to my Pioneer with an optical out Toslink cable. When I turned everything on -nothing. After talking to a very helpful person at Zvox, we determined that the HDMI on my Pioneer will not pass any digital information from HDMI connected devices through the Toslink cable. Long story short, I had to connect to the Monitor Out using analog rca cables. Somewhat disappointing. But thats Pioneers fault. The 580, even through an analog source, sounds great. I can actually understand the words. I was concerned over the prospect of setting my 50inch tv on top of the Zvox, but everything worked great and it was very stable. This is a great sounding speaker and I cant say enough good things about Zvox customer support. Iwould not hesitate to buy from them and Crutchfield again.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your are looking for a simple powerful set up, the Z 580 is a great choice! I was looking to improve the HDTV sound without having to have speakers and components all over the place. I started with internet searches and reviews of sound bars of all types and price ranges (Ie. Sony , Harmon Kardon, Polk Audio, Bose) to name a few. Then went to listen to each product that suit my specific needs. I had read about a company name ZVOX years ago and kept an eye on their product line because I liked their sound in a box theory. Well ZVOX kept on coming up on several sites as a good choice for a sound bar. I am now glad I waited all these years for the ZVOX 580! Setup and install fast and simple. Just know your sound needs and you will not be disappointed in this product. My wife was not home before I set up the system to my liking and left it like that and went to work. See called me later and to say that the sound was great coming of that black box and made her DVD movie enjoyable! Nufff said, the wife likes it!!

Pros: Remote syncs easily , connection and set up simple to understand great sound clarity and just enough subwoofer

Cons: None at this time

Solid Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with the Zvox 580 that I recently received. Initially I had not heard of this brand, so was a bit skeptical - but after looking online quite a bit for reviews (by both customers and independent websites), I gained quite a bit of confidence in them, and made the purchase. The fact that Crutchfield has an excellent return/refund policy only made the decision easier to try it out. I did go to a local store to listen to it first, but it's hard to make a decision based on that even, since essentially you have to be happy with how it sounds in YOUR setup, not in a professional one at a store. That's how Crutchfield's policy really gave me peace of mind. The 580 is very sturdy, heavy, and solidly built. I like the fact that the connections are simplified on it (just run audio from your TV and you're done). As with any product that offers multiple sound settings, you'll have to fuss with it until you''ve got the setting you like, based on what you're watching (movie vs. TV vs. sports). But that's normal. I have used mine to watch several movies, and was very happy with the sound quality. It's not going to replace a "true" surround sound system, but even Zvox admits that. The point of it is to get something better than the TV speakers, deliver solid, immersive sound, but not have to deal with a full surround setup. It does that well. It does what it's designed for quite well!

Pros: Solid sound, makes movies and TV much more enjoyable than TV speakers

Cons: If I was picky I'd say "cost", but you actually get quite a bit for your money, considering you don't need a receiver/amp to power it! I think the price is fair for what you get.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I took the plunge after reading all the reviews on the ZVOX Model 580 and I'm glad I finally bought this model. The Bass is Excellent! And, the overall sound of the unit is clear as a bell. My wife likes the fact that we don't have a bunch of wires strung out all over the room. We like the one box system alot! It's kind of unbelieveable how good this little small box sounds!! I'm an audiophile and I am generally real picky about which equipment I buy. I paired this 580 with a new 70" Sharp LED, 3D TV and it is just phenomenal how I finally feel like I'm watching a real movie with real movie sound!! It's really worth it (I think) to buy the best system ZVOX offers, so you won't get short changed on your bass. So, good ahead and spend the extra $100 and be done with it for the next 10 years!

Pros: Easy set up clear instructions Great Bass! Good stereo separation Good surround sound qualities

Cons: No cons that I can see.

Excellent choice ... for what it is

WilliamH from Atlanta, GA on 10/16/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX-Base 580 is an excellent choice for what it is -- a single unit, all-in-one speaker system which richly replaces the anemic sound of the speakers on my wall-mounted LG 55" HD 3D TV. I purchased it for use in my modestly sized master bedroom, choosing it over the smaller ZVOX systems so as to have a richer sound at low volume. The bass volume range is more than adequate given the facts I have neighbors adjacent to my condo and my wife prefers less bass over more. Over the years I have purchased many A/V items from Crutchfield and have always appreciated the quality of the items and the excellent support service provided both before and after purchases. The purchase process and quality of this product is very much in line with my previous happy experiences with Crutchfield.

Pros: Very helpful pre-purchase consultation with sales associate, quick delivery after placing order, very easy installation, superb sound, broad variety of sound-setting options.

This excellent product installs just as the ad says...simple and done in 5 minutes without hi-tech knowledge. It is controlled by your TV remote and turns on and off automatically. A separate remote is supplied to change the type of sound you desire...concert hall, stadium, movie, etc. I just set it at the best sound for the room and put the separate remote away. Wife loves the simplicity which is why I purchased it. Other electronic retailers never heard of it and that is their loss. Great buy and sound for the money. I'm totally satisfied.

Pros: Great sound

NW from North Central, Florida on 9/21/2012

First the speaker tries to copy Dolby Digital and they do not. The speaker spreads the sound from center and all I wanted was speakers that sounded more natural than the TV speakers, not a Dolby speaker system for I already have a 7 speakers and AV receiver system for true Dolby or DTS. This speaker has un-natural hissy highs and little bass. I wanted this speaker system to reproduce natural sounding voice which my TV does not accomplish and neither does this speaker.

Pros: Playing music over the speaker is pleasing.

Cons: Over priced, less than average voice reproduction speaker system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an amazing surround system (but never had backround speakers). This sounds pretty incredible for it's size. The bass was ok, but was awesome after using my existing powered subwoofer using a 55hz crossover setting. It really sounds great but rear speakers would make it sound a lot more like surround sound. (but the sound quality is excellent). The wife loves the fact that she dosent have to look at speakers.

Pros: Sound quality

Very Good

MG from Sacramento, CA on 7/18/2012

Yes like most of us who are in a market for a sound bar we've probably demoed and listen to many different brands before making a final decision. I must say bang for the buck the Z-Base 580 is an awesome product. I listened to sound bars ranging from $300 to $2000 and the 580 is an outstanding value. Yes the sound bars in the $1500 to $2000 range have awesome separation, brightness, clarity, and DSP enhanced or simulated 5.1 surround sound, but the 580 is very good too in those sound qualities as well at 1/3rd the price. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 star rating was the ability to give it more bass for those who like a bass type EQ, but I called ZVOX and they have a firmware revision called "REV-27" that improves this issue for some purchasers. I am listener who doesn't like a lot of bass and so far the 580 has enough bass for my ears. One last thing when I called their customer service number the person was very helpful and told me up front all the details of this product. Can't ask for more than that...

Pros: Great Value... Very Good Sound... Some nice basic sound adjustments that not overly complicated...

Cons: A little more bass control for people who love a thump-in bass sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say that I am hearing impaired to the point that I wear hearing aids so I may not hear exactly what you hear but that is true of all of us regardless. After years of frustration in trying to get my wife to understand and operate a 5.1 channel receiver system, I gave up. Did that upset me, no because I was tired of all the wires and all the other new-fangled that was coming out every few weeks myself. All I wanted was good clear dialog and music worth listening to. So I started checking out amplified soundbars and I have owned some or had some for trial periods (probably had six or more). In a very weak moment I even purchased a $2000 soundbar which I will not name. Within a weak of listening I was kicking myself for being so gullible because in head to head testing the sound wasn't any better (in my opinion) than my Polk SurroundBar 6000 at $499. But I was still looking for something better and more flexible in terms of setting options. Finally, on the recommendation of a Crutchfield advisor I decided to try the ZVOX Z-Base 580. I have had it for about 4 weeks now and it keeps getting better all the time. Simple to set up, great sound quality and maybe best of all the wife knows how to use it. I really liked my Polk Surround 6000 but it is now on Craig's list because the ZVOX does everything even better. As a bonus benefit for me, I was looking to raise the height of my TV so it was a perfect solution.

Pros: Simple hook-up. Great sound. Flexibility for selecting various surround modes, dialog enhancement, bass response. Blends well under the TV.

Cons: Programing Cable Box remote a little tricky

Pros: Easy Hook Up

Cons: Needs the help of two others who have the 50" TV when unit is place under TV

zvox 580 - subwoofer now working with zvox factory patch

mak from westport ct on 4/23/2012

excellent sound & great design; allows me to replace much more expensive and dated Denon AV receiver and separate speakers; integrates very well with system comprised of Sony fp (40XBR3), tivo HD, PS3, ATV3; very easily programmed Tivo remote to control ZVOX; works great with external powered subwoofer, a 1997-vintage Sunfire; - ZVOX now has a patch to correct their previous external subwoofer design issue (i don't know if it can be retroactively applied) one drawback: older vintage HDTV's such as Sony 40XBR3 do not switch all audio inputs through the HDTV's optical link; only digital audio received through the HDTV's own tuner; requiring using of the ZVOX analog inputs; NOTE: newer HDTV's do not have this limitation.

Pros: great sound; great compact design; easy to use; BOOM BOOM external subwoofer support works great

Cons: older vintage HDTV's don't support optical audio for all sources

Perfect, until it stopped working

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was exactly what I was looking for; the sound -- especially the dialog enhancement aspect -- was precisely what my family room needed. We loved it (well, my wife thought it was too much of a monolith, but it still fit logically and unobtrusively under our 46" Samsung TV). The bass is just right, the midrange just right, the highs just right. So why three stars? After about a month and a half, the unit started having some trouble. Wouldn't come on for a bit, but then it was fine. After another week, it started stuttering. After another week, it would cut in and out and then, eventually, it just stopped working altogether. Trial and error testing revealed that it was the optical input that was the culprit. Two different brand cables were used; same problem. Hooked those same cables from the same TV to another speaker box and the optical works fine. To be fair, the ZVOX still works great when hooked up via the TV's 1/8" plug to the RCA inputs, but I didn't spend this much for analog input. Thanks to Crutchfield's awesome return policy, I'll be sending this back and trying out a different brand. But I sure wish like crazy this would have worked, because it was exactly what I wanted.

Pros: - Great dialog enhancement - All-in-one design with two cords (power & audio) - multiple auxiliary inputs (including front-panel 1/8) - solid build quality, save for the optical input as noted

Cons: - optical capabilities not ready for prime time, negating its usefulness - a little on the big side, but not badly so

My first purchase was the Zvox 580. I decided to take advantage of the scratch and dent option. When I recieved it the defect was minor to say the least. However when I got it home and hooked it up it wasn't what I expected. Quite weak and the output leveling feature just wasn't what I was hoping. Then POW loud noise followed by a constant high pitch tone. Called customer service and they promptly sent out a new unit and I couldn't be happier! This thing is awesome. I am very happy with the performance of this unit. To anyone considering this purchase just know what you are geting. This is not a replacement for a quality 5.1 or 7.1 surround system. It is a massive improvement over your TV speakers. And in my opinion is far superior to anything(sound bar or HTIB) in its price range. I am considering buying two more for other areas of the house. Thanks to ZVOX for an excellent product and Thanks to Crutchfield for excellent customer service and technical support.

Pros: Excellent sound nice bass esp. playing music. Attractive instalation.

Cons: None

Performance with simplicity

Neil R from Canoga Park, CA on 3/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the sound ZVOX delivers. 3D and Bluray movies provide theater like sound, and dialogue is so clear, even when listening to old shows such as Gunsmoke. The bass is more than adequate as well, so forget adding supplementary sub woofer. Listening area is a small living room, and I rarely raise the volume above the setting of 10. Connecting and setting up is amazingly simple, and the learning feature for ones existing remote for volume control and power is the same; the engineers who designed this deserve accolades. I used to spend large sums of money on Denon and Yamaha systems when I was young, and shaking the foundation off the house was a vicarious thrill, but that isn't necessary. ZVOX delivers a superb product at an affordable price; I am very satisfied, both with the product, and with my Crutchfield advisor, Keith.

Pros: Great sound, ease of set up and remote learning function, and output leveling option is a great feature for commercial tv viewing. And, as one other review stated, it disappears under the tv.

So far so good. I'm still playing around with it trying to get the best sound since I have a hearing problem. The sound appears to be good since I have be able to watch the TV without my hearing aids. I have been using the SR 1 setting with the OL.

Pros: It seems to work very well, but I haven't really had it long enough to pass judgement on it. Set up was easy optical toslink out from tv to the optical in on the ZVOX and its good to go.

Pros: Easy set up.

Mark from Leesburg, VA on 2/8/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason and ONLY reason this system get a 2 is because of the Bass. The High and mids are great on this system. It pains me that I have to return this item, but with gaming, music, and movies, you need BASS! I even plugged in my powered sub woofer and received mediocre feedback. BEWARE! Please read under "Detail", "Connections" and "Subwoofer output" it states, "Although there is a single RCA subwoofer output, the output voltage is too low to integrate with most powered subwoofers. The output is full range." I just didn't want to have to order a sub, return, order another, then rinse in repeat looking for that perfect sub that will work with this unit. I was even told by the technical adviser with Crutchfield that this was a downfall with this unit.

Pros: Awesome Highs and mids

Cons: Unable to use powered sub.

This unit replaces a five year old Yamaha sound bar and Pro Sub 800. Those pieces combined cost 3X the ZVOX 580. Guess what? The sound quality of the ZVOX is much, much better and it looks great as well. I kept the Yamaha set on stereo all the time (believe it or not) because all the surround settings were either echo prone or tinny. This is one fantastic unit for the price. Also, props to Crutchfield for the technical advice and the quick delivery. Best Buy couldn't even give me a solid delivery date, and they don't carry this in their stores so I'm told.

Pros: Sound. All in one unit. Ease of use and installation. Solid build.

Cons: None, because it does what it was designed to do.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect for an uncluttered and reasonably priced audio solution to the poor audio from an HDTV. It is not a full featured sound system but not sure you could buy one for anywhere near this price that would compare to the sound you get from the ZVOX 580. I agree with other reviewers that the bass can be a little boomy but it has separate bass & treble control settings that can minimize the boom if that is an issue for you. Personally, I think a well rounded audio experience doesn't require a dominant bass emphasis. Also, the dialog emphasis feature is excellent, especially for older ears! Overall, we are pleased with our purchase and so is our son, who got the old receiver and Bose 201 speakers that the ZVOX replaced!

Pros: Compact, sturdy, attractive, and functions as advertised. It has multiple inputs and a simple to use remote.

Cons: None worth mentioning.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX-Z-Base 580 fits perfectly under our Sony Bravia 42" flat screen HDTV. The sound is great, although with the bass turned up is very "boomy". Connection is EASY, and I'm now listening to an ipod through it with good sound (even without a DAC...though that is definitely better...i.e. in a listening room with Martin Logan (?) speakers!). I bought the ZVOX for simplicity for my wife & family. If I had it to do over again, I would just buy a Bose T20 or similar good receiver, good small speakers, and easy digital connectivity, preferably wireless at least for sub and rears. Still, a great product & a sound bargain! I'd recommend highly, since the Bose & others are 4x+ in price!

Pros: Simple to install & use. Looks fine. Much, much better sound than the TV!!!!

Cons: "Boomy bass", & the early Sony only had optical, not SPDIF connection. That was Sony's problem! Still not the wide stereo/multichannel separation that is best, but is very good for one unit! In short, the "cons" aren't that bad, unless compared to far more expensive systems.

Following the instructions of a zbox technical person did not work and actually stopped my direct tv from even controlling the tv sound which it did before i started in with folllowing the zbox tech person's instructions. I will continue to try and get my directtv remote to control the sound of the zbox. But I am very happy with the zbox itself and would recommend it to anyone

We really like that the TV can sit on top of the unit. Looks like a part of the TV set. Our remote had a glitch, and ZVOX immediately sent us a new one at no charge. We are very happy with our purchase. Great quality, sounds super!

Product Research

Overview: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing (enhanced by a Dolby Digital decoder) to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 32"-72" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the SoundBase 580. The television should weigh 160 1bs or less The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 35" (w) x 15.5" (d).

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 120 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Five 3.25" Drivers: The ZVOX SoundBase 580 uses five 3.25" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

Dual 6.25" Subwoofers: In addition to the five main speakers, the SoundBase 580 has two down firing high-mass, long-throw 6.25" subwoofers in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Suround Sound: The SoundBase 580 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.
Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Dolby Digital: The unit's two digital inputs work with the built-in Dolby Digital decoder for improved virtual surround performance.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet with Hand-Lacquered Side Panels: The SoundBase 580 features a hand-built cabinet of heavy MDF with beautiful hand-lacquered high gloss end panels. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The SoundBase 580 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu Ray player that is not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The bass control has a range from -8 to 4. The treble control has a range from -4 to 4.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass & treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new SoundBase 580 can be programmed to respond to your remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume, mute, power and input functions of the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The SoundBase 580 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

One Cable Connection: The SoundBase 580 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

I got no problem with it. It is working fine [ LEONILO  Apr 30, 2014 ]
Tom W. I have had my ZVOX 580 for some time now. It has been installed in two separate locations - my sound room and later in my bedroom . Both locations complemented widescreen televisions. In each instance, I did not have infrared problems with the remote commanding the 580. I would suggest three things for you: (1) make sure your are pointing DIRECTLY at the infrared sensor on the 580. Make sure there are no obstacles between your remote and the 580 (anything in front of your 580?) (2) IF there are no obstacles as noted in (1) and the 580 still fails to command - then CORRECTLY change the batteries. (3) Is your 580 CORRECTLY connected to your tv receiver? Check! These three checks should remedy most infrared remote problems. If they do not, ask the ZVOX folks for a remote swap, particularly if 1 and 2 doesn't fix your concerns, Since your 580 does intermittently respond, I think it more of a remote issue than the 580 unit itself. Jim [ JAMES  Apr 29, 2014 ]
I've noticed the same thing I just make sure the remote is pointed straight at the box. I will say that's the only issue I've had, the thing works great other wise I would highly recommend this unit to any one that has the room for it. You could maybe try a infra red repeater if its a real issue for you. Chad [ PPMC MFG,  Apr 28, 2014 ]
I use the dish network 722 dvr to control the volume, It is an RF remote and I have it programmed to work with the Zvox. Off axis, maybe 30 degrees, the dish volume indicator will show functioning but the zvox, which is analog wired to the tv will not work. I tried a cheap IR blaster but it did not make much difference. Zvox told me sometimes the ir sensor in the 580 will be off center and cause this problem, but I am not exactly sure where the IR sensor in the Zvox 580 is. Thanks for the response. [ Tom  Apr 28, 2014 ]
I have not experienced the wide angle issue you referenced. I have a Samsung TV and control the the volume using the TV remote. I only use the ZVOX remote to turn the box on and to change the functions. [ S R  Apr 28, 2014 ]
The remote for the 580 is pretty much a point and click remote. If you are more then 20-30 degrees off center, it will probably skip. Anywhere from straight on to 20 degrees off center, you should be good. I have heard & read from others pretty much the same thing. Personally, I never sit more then 15 degrees off, so I just don't have the stated problem. Also, I don't use the 580 remote much. I have pretty much, set it & forget it. You got the remote, grab that Good Center Seat, and be happy. [ FRANK  Apr 27, 2014 ]
No [ RAUL  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Yes, it comes with one cable, but we purchased a better cable to get the best sound possible. I'm enjoying my Z=Base very much and am glad I purchased it. [ MARION T  Dec 25, 2013 ]
Yes the wires needed to hook up the tv is included. I used the optical cable nad it worked great. [ RONALD H  Dec 24, 2013 ]
It comes with the standard RCA (red & white) audio cables... that should be all you need.. take care! [ CRAIG A  Dec 24, 2013 ]
The Z-580 comes with RCA cables but not the digital cables which most newer flat screens use [ GARY L  Dec 24, 2013 ]
The important cable, not supplied, is the optical digital cable. You can use other cables for your audio, but I always go with the digital. [ PAUL R  Dec 23, 2013 ]
Unfortunately I can't give you a good answer - I don't remember if cables were included but I didn't purchase any with this speaker. [ MELVIN D  Dec 23, 2013 ]
I have mine hooked up via a optical cable, which I had to purchase -- I don't recall this unit coming with any cables except for the power cable -- [ STEPHAN  Dec 23, 2013 ]
The only cable that came with the package was the power cable. I purchased an optical cable when I ordered mine. I asked this question and no one knew so I went ahead and ordered one. Lucky [ DOUGLASS M  Dec 23, 2013 ]
Yes! All the cables came with it. [ JOHN F  Dec 23, 2013 ]
No [ RAUL  Dec 23, 2013 ]
No. You only need one cable but the type depends on your TV. If your TV has an optical digital output, that is the best choice. You will have to buy an optical digital cable (also called toslink). Next best choice is coaxial digital. If your TV has a coaxial digital output you can use any cable with RCA-style connecting plugs. If you have an older TV which has neither of these outputs you will need a standard analog audio cable with red and white wires and RCA-style connecting plugs. I have been using this system for seven months and consider it to be an outstanding product [ STEPHEN A  Dec 23, 2013 ]
I think it came with an RCA cable. You will like this speaker. I am exceeding satisfied. [ ARNOLD  Dec 23, 2013 ]
No! Each TV requires A cable(one cable) to suit your INPUT area of same. PS/ My 65" Samsung(8000 series) sits perfectly on the box and all my old speakers are history. [ THOMAS A  Dec 23, 2013 ]
Subwoofer Output: An optional powered subwoofer can be connected using the full-range single RCA Sub Output on the back panel. We have a great deal right now on the PS38 subwoofer: [ Jeff  Dec 17, 2013 ]  Staff
I had a cable box but connected to t v and cable box, at least time warner. [ PATRICIA  Dec 09, 2013 ]
I think you need to read the setup instructions. Hook the cable into the Sony and use an HDMI cable to connect to the TV. It works great. [ JERRY  Dec 07, 2013 ]
This will depend slightly on the connections coming out of your cable box. If your cable box has audio outputs (analog or digital) then you can connect those directly to this unit. [ Jeff  Dec 05, 2013 ]  Staff
The Samsung 65" TV will work great with this base. Stability of TVs around children is a very real concern. I would recommend a safety strap to help ensure that the TV cannot tip (whether it is on a base like this or not). The Sanus ELM701 is the one recommended for your TV. [ Jeff  Nov 26, 2013 ]  Staff
