Dialogue up, commercials down

If you can't hear the actors, it's nearly impossible to follow the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives voices new clarity and prominence. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats during commercial breaks. Thanks to the output leveling feature, the 420 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax.

ZVOX 420

josephis from St. Paul MN on 1/19/2015

I read a review in the local paper and ordered direct. Sound was only OK, lacking bass. Biggest problem was the units tendency to overheat and shut down spontaneously after about 2 hours operation. I returned the unit after two weeks and received a full refund. ZVOX paid the return shipping. Bought a BOSE System 10 soundbase instead. More money but good sound quality, digital signal processing & dolby noise reduction and so far no problems.

Pros: Ease of use. Ease of returning the defective unit.

Cons: Unit became very hot, no ventilation slots anywhere. Unit shut down spontaneously after about 2 hours of use. ZVOX staff did not seem surprised when I explained the problem with 420. Analog signal processing only. No Dolby noise reduction.

I was reading a article in the newspaper and the writer said if you want to get really good sound out of your high definition television on a budget get a ZVOX 420 SoundBase I looked it up on my computer and read the reviews on it. I seen that Crutchfield had it a real good price with 3 day shipping so I decided to buy it. my HDTV now sounds great. this is a great product!

Pros: works great for a lot less money than a BOSE SOLO 15

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a ZVOX 420 for over a year, used with a 46" SMART TV and I absolutely love it. My fiancee was sitting on the couch and suddenly yelled "what was that!" We were watching an action movie and it was the sound from the speakers bouncing off the walls in my house! He thought someone was in the I recently bought a 65" SMART TV for my fiancee and decided to add the ZVOX 420 as an added bonus because I love mine so much. The sound is just awesome. I love how you can adjust the bass and treble. It's like being in a movie theaterr. I also plug my iPod into the ZVOX and crank up the volume. The sound is incredible for such as small box. The price can't be beat either. The 2nd ZVOX I bought was way better in price than the first one I bought! I think anyone would be pleased with the ZVOX, I know I am and my fiancee is too!!

Pros: Price, ease of setup, sound, esthetics

zvox v420 is lacking ...

mikew from roanoke, va on 8/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i gave the z420 4 stars on because there was not a 3.5 .. i really wanted this product to meet and exceed all the accolades it has received but it barely met. Firstly , it 's main claim to fame is being far superior to regular TV and here it exceeds, but where it fails to meet hype is; (1) Dialogue enhancement , again, it is better than regular tv but it also creates some other problems ( a noticeable hissing sound on words with a "S" at the end, (2) significant echo at times , (3) remote will lose last settings after turning off and back on. (4) output leveling function (OL) does not really do much that i can tell. Music sounds better than tv dialogue so this a plus. Thought about returning but in reality this is about the best out there at this price break Certainly will not replace a decent 5.1 surround system ( not even on dialogue ) but it an effective enhancement to normal tv sound. Also, i used the analog connections rather than digital, i should ask Crutchfield if that is making a difference.

Pros: Music sound surround modes ease of set up

Cons: dialogue enhancement not as expected OL not really effective

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Our new LED TV has a fantastic picture, but lousy sound; inevitable of course since you cannot get even decent sound out of a 1 1/2 inch thick plastic box. I purchased this unit after reading the reviews and must say, it is everything that has been promised. Great sound (for a TV). I especially like the "voice improvement" feature, so one can actually understand what people are saying. Installation was very easy with the one optical cable (included). I got going in minutes. My Cox cable remote works fine with this unit.

Pros: Easy hook-up, very good sound, and it is unobtrusive. Auto switch on/off is a great feature!

Cons: none

Pros: Great sound for the money....will liven up your flatscreen tv's audio especially watching movies.Simple to hook up, via the one digital output cable which is included

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Our 42" Panasonic Plasma TV had a beautiful picture and horrible sound. We couldn't hear dialog which prompted my wife to think she may need a hearing aid! I've bought from Crutchfield before, so I went online there to see what kinds of sound bars they had available. After reading many reviews and technical specs, we settled on the ZVOX Z-base V420 to finally give us the sound to match the picture quality we had been enjoying. I used the online chat to talk to an expert regarding cables needed for the installation and it turned out that we'd need only one digital optical cable that is supplied with the ZVOX unit. So at the time I placed our order I was confident the installation would be easy, which it was. I can even plug my IPOD into the front of the unit by cable and it automatically turns on the ZVOX and plays with some pretty high quality sound.

Pros: The ZVOX Z-base V420 has quality sound from its 6 speakers. We're now hearing bass that we never knew was in the programming we had been watching. The remote gives you some options with respect to bass, treble, output leveling and dialog emphasis as well as 3 surround levels. We have set these up the way we want them and I don't expect we'll need to use the ZVOX remote very often in the future. It looks good and seems to belong under our flat panel TV.

Cons: It was a little tricky, having our Direct TV remote learn how to manage the ZVOX, but on the third try (after closely following the directions) I got it working perfectly.

Just ok

rawinpa1958 from Harrisburg, PA on 2/17/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read many great reviews of this product, however, I have to agree with those who said it was just ok. Granted it is better than my tv sound but not up to all the wonderful reviews. I still have to turn it up into the 20s, except when the music comes on, then it's a mad scramble to turn it back down. The good thing is when it's in the 20s I can hear what is being said, unlike the sound from my tv. I really, really, liked the service when talking to Crutchfield staff, both for installation and returning what I had first ordered. Staff was wonderful, helpful patient and really knowledgeable and nice.

Pros: Fast delivery, outstanding customer service and tech support

Cons: wasn't blown away by the sound quality as I expected to be.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my elderly in-laws instead of the Bose Solo. At half the price, they are pleased as can be with its performance. It helps them hear the dialogue way better than they could with the TV speakers, though this may be the case for about any add on speakers versus the TV speakers. The remote set up worked well, and they basically don't need the ZVOX remote, as it is controlled with the Direct TV remote. Great find and good buy!

DP from Arkansas on 2/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wife and I are seniors. She wears hearing aids and my hearing is not what it once was. ZVOX V420 was purchased because of the audio enhancement features, speaker placement, and design. We bought a "scratch and dent" unit as we are on a fixed income and could save a few dollars. We didn't notice any flaws. We are very pleased with our unit. We watch a lot of sports on TV and, quite often, the backgorund noise was so great that we couldn't hear the announcers. My wife would often ask "what did he/she say" and sometimes I could tell her and sometimes I couldn't. The ZVOX V420 is a wonderful improvement for us. During one basketball game we recently watched we were surprised that we couldn't hear the announcers over the background noise in the building. I double-checked our settings and they were good. I told my wife that it must be an on site audio issue. It must have been as a little later in the game it was no problem. I have been very pleased with Crutchfield's tech support. They have answered my questions in a courteous and effective manner. I'm sure I will be calling them soon to help with setting my cable remote to handle some of the ZVOX remote sound commands. Thanks to Crutchfield. I am a new customer and certainly am satisfied.

Pros: Great sound and dialogue clarity. Excellent tech support (important to me as a senior).

Cons: None at this time.

Toad3 from Fergus Falls, Mn. on 1/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think about returning but will give a couple weeks more. I have to keep raising the volume as sometimes dialogue is too low, then music or dialogue get too high and I have to lower it. If the volume stayed the same it would be great. The sound is better than my Sony XBR but having to have my remote in my hand for volume control annoys me.

Pros: Nice sound, better than Sony tv

Cons: volume change, remote needed to lower or raise.

Love It!

JerryK from Seattle, WA on 1/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fantastic product- extremely easy to hook up and use. We were all set to buy the Bose until we found this, and are happy we chose this. We can actually hear the voices over the music and background noises on TV shows. We may even buy another one for the other big screen TV!

Pros: Ease of hook up, easy remote to use.

Cons: Size of the unit is a little large, but also adds to the big sound.

My Christmas gift to me!

PatriciaS from Far Rockaway, NY on 1/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been following Zvox for some time through Consumer Reports and other tech reviews and decided to give it a try. What a wonderful surprise. It came Christmas eve. All the TV specials sounded great. At mid-volume, the parade sounded like it was in my house. The single unit fit perfectly under my 47" TV. I was happy not to deal with extra speaker and subwoofer placement. I want another for the bedroom.

Pros: Five minutes to install. On low volume the sound is still great for late night/early a.m. viewing, Voices are clear and undistorted at all levels.

Cons: Nothing yet.

As the title says I'm no audiophile but am well satisfied with the Zvox 420. The sound is great IMO (way better that my LG TV speakers). I can hear dialog better but I still need the captions for the Brit shows. Crutchfield shipping was quick and had it in 2 days. I will use Crutchfield in the future.

Pros: As advertized!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had the unit about 2 weeks now and very satisfied. Certainly better audio than from the back end of a big screen tv. Good clarity and control.

Pros: Easy to set up and use.

Cons: Haven't been able to use other than the supplied remote since my current remote controls both the cable and tv. And, still have to figure out how to get Netflix audio to the ZVOX.

MUCH better sound!

JD from Corning NY on 12/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit was very easy to install but a bit tricky to sync with the TV, but the ZVOX 800 number resource was very helpful. The sound is great, and a big improvement over the built in speakers on the TV. The output leveling works quite well so commercials do not blast you, and the surround works good considering it is just one piece in front of you, not a multiple speaker set-up. Only real disappointment was the Dialog Emphasis does not work as well as hoped, still have to run unit louder that I hoped to be able to clearly hear the dialogue. To avoid the Samsung TV from showing the mute symbol on the screen we turn TV down to 0 so we only have the ZVOX working (so we only have good sound) but a pain to have 2 remotes...have not found a way to disable TV speakers.

Pros: quick set=up, great sound

Cons: 2 remotes, Dialogue emphasis not as good as expected

Ralph from mass on 12/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the 420 for 2 weeks now an at first was not impressed, bass was nice enough but voices sounded really hollow, after tweaking the settings a bit I was able to get it to sound much better, at first I hooked it to the back of my 46 inch Sony LCD but since I only have one component hooked to this TV witch is a denon blu-ray player, I thought better to use a coax cable directly to the back of the blu-ray player an glad I did because sound became a lot better, I don't know how it sounds wit music, I didn't buy it for that reason but wit movie's it sounds a lot better than the built in TV speakers, I was in the middle of watching the film 'Flight ' on blu-ray an I turned the Zvox all the way down an then turned the TV speakers on an the difference was extremely noticeable, little details that I could hear very clearly wit the zvox were not even present through the built in TV speakers, so I am happy wit this product but I do think it's a tad bit over hyped as far as all the stellar reviews.

Pros: Good sound, easy hookup, solid build

Cons: A little pricy for what u get

Easy to set up and work well

Don from Glen Ellyn, IL on 12/13/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Arrived quickly after ordering. Set it up quickly and easily. Could have done it quicker, but didn't properly connect it to the audio output ports. I disconnected the current speakers that came with the TV. Set up of my cable remote control worked perfectly to control audio, mute, and to automatically power up. Sound is much better...I'm satisfied.

Pros: Easy set up. Improved audio.

Sound Bar Zvox

Hank from Stuart, FL on 12/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is just ok. Considering the hype that came along with this item it is a disappointment. Altho the sound is better still straining to hear. Additionally, directions are not that simple - had to contact Tech to finally get this thing to work, it kept on dropping the sound. The dropped sound is due to the directions of hooking into the TV rather than a different device, eg, Comcast box

Pros: Great tech support

Cons: Clearer directions are needed rather than those that misdirect you. Sound is ok but nothing to write home about

Great Bang for the Buck

Grondeaux from Louisiana on 12/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was originally looking for a home theater system, but was dreading the set-up and running wires through the walls. Then I ran across the SoundBase and similar models. I was leaning towards the Bose unit until I read the reviews of the zVox SoundBase 420. I've had it for three weeks now and am very happy with it. Set-up is advertised as taking ten minutes; it took me 15 from a sealed shipping box as I failed to read the directions and had to use a different cable. Everything you'll need is in the box. The sound quality is good. It looks nice to boot and is pretty-near brainless to operate. The zVox learned how to use my SuddenLink remote control in about 5 minutes... maybe less. Using it with an iPod is equally easy. I think the 420 is a perfect meeting point of sound quality, ease-of-set-up and price.

Pros: Good sound quality, certainly loud enough for my living room. easy set-up, works well with my iPod, price, uses my main remote control.

Cons: The sound quality is good, not great. It's also not true surround sound (which I knew when I bought it.) For gut-thumping bass, you'll want a unit with a sub-woofer.

Sounds great and looks very handsome

Zeeman from Surrey,BC on 11/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm giving it a 4.5 * out of 5. The setup was extremely simple( took less than 2 mins) . I have a 47" LG Led tv and it fit well with more than enough room for upto 55". I'm using the included digital optical cable which is rare with a lot of speakers so dont have to purchase them seperately. It sounds amazing, completely different experiance of seeing television with these speakers. It does give you options for settings like bass, treble on the remote itself, which is quite easy. I do wish it had an audio out incase I wanted to attach my headphones through the system and thats the only reason i'm removing the .5 starts. For a medium size living room or a condo space this device is pefect. Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: space saver, beautiful design, extemely easy setup, plenty of audio in inputs, sounds very very good.

Cons: No audio out for headphones-wireless or wired.

Beat expectations

JS from Orlando, FL on 11/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for aging relative who was having a hard time with dialogue on TV speakers. Setup was simple and sound quality, especially voices, exceeded my expectations. Make no mistake, this is not a grand home theater system but it looks good (you almost don't notice it) and sounds far superior to built in speakers

Pros: Especially impressed with user manuals and the detail provided to train specific cable remotes. Good preset options for voice or movies and volume leveling

Cons: none really. It was not immediately clear that one needs to use volume up or down to wake it up from sleep mode.

Surprising Sound

tv viewer from San Diego, CA on 11/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound from a single "box top" type of speaker. Some trouble getting everything hooked up, because the only hook-ups available for my tv is via the optical cable, which only gives the cable company's analog signal...the HDTV part of the tv tuner gets Dolby Digital sound, which the speaker box cannot decode. Otherwise, it is a great system...brings bolder, more intelligible sounds from the tv as compared to the TV's tinny sounding speakers.

Pros: Great sounds, great volume. Intelligible speech. Good sound array, almost surround sound type with adjustable treble and bass. Easy to place unit.

Cons: Does not decode Dolby Digital format...would drive cost of product higher. Output hook-ups for analog only if your tv has those hook ups, otherwise its only optical connection, limiting HDTV sound outputs. Check your tv first to make sure you have the analog outputs.

zvox 420 very nice

Dan from Forest VA. on 11/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice alternative for reasonably good sound with flat screen TV's. The ZVOX is visually unobtrusive (almost invisible), and yet has quite the dynamic sound quality. You will be pleased with what you have purchased at an acceptable cost..

Pros: Sound quality, price, programmability, minimal adjustments--that actually do enhance the product.

Cons: The "auto on" feature -when the zvox sees action on your TV, can be a nuisance because--if you program your remote to automatically turn on your TV and the ZVOX, "seeing action" on the TV then turns the zvox back off. The IR code for "on" and "off" is the same and a remote cannot be programmed to do only the "off". ZVOX should delete the "auto on" function with TV activity. Nice thought but completely unnecessary and potentially problematic. Keep it simple.

ZVOX Z-Base V420

Lou from Saratoga Springs, NY on 11/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for the dialogue emphasis feature. I am disappointed in this feature. The dialog enhancement on my Samsung TV works as well or better than the one of the ZVOX. Despite this, I have decided to keep the ZVOX because the overall sound is richer than the TV speakers. I have tried several soundbars and have not found one that provides adequate enhanced dialog.

Pros: easy setup looks nice under the TV set vs soundbars that sit in front of the set does not block remote control sensor on the TV

Cons: Dialogue emphasis does not provide enhanced dialog.

ZVOX Z-Base V420

Jim C from Charlottesville, VA on 11/17/2013

Just what I was looking for. I put it under a 42" TV and it did not add to the surface clutter. Excellent sound and so much better than the TV sound. I used the optical digital cable that came in the box.

Pros: Easy to set up. The hardest part was lifting the TV and sliding it under the TV base (a two person job).

Cons: A little bit of trial and error for the cable box remote set-up to be synced up and operating the new ZVOX. But I did get it to work.

ZVOX Z-Base V420

Robert B from Metairie. LA on 11/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have significant hearing loss and hearing dialogue on TV has been difficult. The Dialogue emphasis on the ZVOX 420 makes it possible to hear a great deal more of the dialogue, and thus it is easier to follow what is happening in movies, for instance. I don't hva ego read the close caption nearly as much.

Pros: Easy to set up. Easy to adjust volume.

Cons: None so far.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Bass and treble can be adjusted, reasonably priced, TV sits on top of it so it doesn't take up anymore counter space, so easy to set up and the voice clarity is wonderful.

Cons: None for me.

Great Speaker (sound bar). I had an older and very expensive sound bar, but it was so complicated that I never did get to understand it -- had to use a very complex remote, and change input for every device. This unit is so simple and is a joy to use.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a 42" LG tv for my bedroom. The picture was great but the sound was weak. I have Pandora on the tv and like to play music when I am working in that part of the house and the speakers in the television weren't doing a very good job. I checked various speaker systems on Crutchfield and decided to try this. They had a scratch and dent unit at a bargain price so I ordered it. When I got it the box looked like it had been run over by a herd of buffalo. The system in the box did not have a mark on it! It was quick and easy to connect to the television and works, along with the television, from the Direct Tv remote. The sound quality and volume was greatly improved. It is possible to get some distortion at very high volume settings but I do not play it that loud, ever, so that is not an issue for me. Bottom line is that it does what I purchased it for and I'm satisfied. In today's world that's about the best you can hope for. Could it be better? Sure, but that's why they make more expensive units. If you are looking for top quality sound you need to spend big money. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Pros: Much better sound quality than the television speakers.

Cons: It's not possible to program the unit to turn off by hitting the "off" button on the remote so I have to remember to hit "on" before turning everything else off. It turns on and off only with the "on" button. Not a huge deal.

Good But Not Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy setup. Sound is definitely improved and dialogue more understandable for us. Did think it would be better, but I'll reserve final judgement until I'm certain that I understand everything about the product. Wish we didn't have to have another remote to add to the group, but we only are using it when we need to change the dialogue enhance or the surround. Overall, so far for the price, it's definitely worth it. Old movies are always good, newer ones, especially British, are still a bit iffy, but better than without the soundbar. The shipping package was very good. Would have liked more documentation on the subtleties of the various options, such as the surround, but the documentation was adequate, expecially for the price. Don't know what else I can tell you, as we haven't really had time to give it a good run, but so far, it's doing good for us.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took advantage of the open box discount and received the product 2 days later in perfect condition, packaged as it would be leaving the factory. Set up was a absolute breeze. The instructions are soo easy to follow and everthing worked accordingly. I placed the v420 on my flat black TV stand and placed my LG 55LS4500 55" LED flat screenTV on top of the v420. It blends in so well you hardly notice it. The sound is a major improvement over the TV speakers with crisp tones and plenty of adjustable bass/treble/volume. The soft spoken dialogue is much improved and easier to hear. My wife and I (60 yrs old) don't find ourselves saying to each other "what did they say?" anymore. It's not a full surround sound system effect but we weren't looking for that. It fills our TV room (14'X18') with quality rich sound, enough bass and clear voices. It is well worth the price paid and Crutchfield is a high quality trouble free company with excellent technical service staff.

Pros: Great product well worth the money with much improved audio performance over the the TV speakers. The quality of the sound is on par with BOSE systems, maybe even better!

Cons: Nothing really, everthing works perfectly. There are no vibrations or other annoyances that some reviews spoke of, even at full volume. As I am a perfectionist the only little bothersome item is that the v420 is controlled by my cable remote which allows you to hold the volume button down and the volume increases automatically, but the v420 volume only increases with one click at a time on the remote.

I am still evaluating this product. But it has improved the sound of my TV. I like the dialogue enhancement which is why we bought this. And music is excellent.

Pros: Dialogue enhancement feature. Bass and Treble controls

Cons: Sound volume and quality seems to vary from channel to channel.

Falls Short

Spauthy from Grantville, PA on 4/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to keep to one remote (DirecTV) for all functions. Crutchfield customer service said, on two occasions, this unit will enter standby but wake up when the audio signal appears from the TV. No way. You must use the ZVOX remote to wake up the unit before it will function with the other remote. Unit also uses IR (line-of-sight) technology (still in the stone age like Bose) instead of RF, so you need to always be pointing the remote directly at the unit. Surround sound is a marketing gimmick that would benefit from an "off" setting. SS setting did little to affect the ambience. Returned the unit; looking for something else.

Pros: Sound improvement over TV speakers.

Cons: Standby mode only wakes to ZVOX remote. IR remote is old technology. Surround-sound is a marketing ploy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box it took five minutes to set up following the easy instructions with helpful photos. Purchased to enhance quality of the dialogue and it does so perfectly. My wife and I were not looking for a surround sound home theater thing, yet I cannot believe the sound. Dialogue is crisp, explosions, sirens and what not are so clear and sharp that the dogs, who were used to the regular sound of the TV, go on full alert! Plus the display on the front is great.

Pros: Ease of set up and use. Performs exactly as advertised. Purchased here and the person I spoke with took their time, listened and provided good advice.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 3 years for the cost I thought the upgrade would be better on all levels from my MainStage speaker ....slight damage on arrival.

Pros: I like the fact that it fits underneath the TV, being all black it actually looks like part of my tv. Sound quality is very good..

Cons: Comparing this to my MainStage ... The remote is the biggest challenge which I still haven't figured out yet, to many buttons. The labeling that define the functions blend in with the dark color of remote Very hard to read. My biggest let down is when setting TV to automatically turn on the speaker does not engage, it must be turned on manually.

The sound quality is great! Clean tight bass with good definition. You can clearly hear the difference in tone of acoustic, electric and synthesizer bass. Treble and midrange are accurate. ZVOX puts the speakers in my HDTV to shame. This is the perfect solution to good sound in a small room. Now the audio matches the picture quality of my HDTV!

Pros: Easy placement and set-up. Clearly written instruction manual. ZVOX can produce substantial output in small rooms. Reasonably priced based on performance and build quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent soundbar! Eliminated a lot of clutter around our HDTV, which was the intent - but the sound produced by the Zvox 420 is astonishing. It's pretty big, but tha'st not a downside for us. Very easy hookup to our newer Vizio TV, although I haven't managed to program our 'big' remote yet. We love the dialogue enhancer and never miss a word anymore. The Zvox allowed us to move our desktop stereo/CD unit into the bedroom, as our Panasonic Blu-ray plays CD's beautifully with the Zvox, with no additional cables. It's a beautiful thing.

Pros: Attractive, simple but effective remote & display, with excellent sound at all levels.

Cons: None so far.

While a nice improvement over the speakers in my 46" Panasonic plasma TV, I'm not sure about all the raves that Zvox gets from the press. I am happy with the sound for the regular shows I watch, but would be disappointed if I was using the Zvox for action movie sound. Fortunately I have a theater room with a full surround system for watching movies, so not an issue. movies,

Pros: Improvement in voice clarity and fullness of sound. Size; price.

Cons: Nothing special for real dynamic sound tracks or using to play music.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The flat screen TV has wimpy sound but the ZVOX V420 turns it into a poor-man's home theater! The attractive box compliments the TV and looks as good as it sounds. Set up, of course, is extremely simple. It only took about 30 SECONDS to program my TiVo remote control to make the speaker system respond to my commands. Specifically, the TV and ZVOX turn on and off together, along with the volume level and mute. I truly believe the ZVOX V420 is worth every penny of it's very reasonable price.

Pros: Great sound, terrific quality, very attractive.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took some tinkering to make to connect to my new Samsung flat-screen. Buried deep in the Samsung was a switch to go from standard to amplified, that did the trick. After it was all done (I had to call Crutchfield for assistance), it worked. However, it doesn't sound as good as I had hoped. Also, I had expected it to keep the commercial volumes lower, but it only brings them down about 20% (still louder than the show). I only have a 32" LCD TV, so the footprint of this device is about 2" longer on each side (MOL), and as it sits on a glass rack underneath my wall-mounted TV, it's a little larger than I'd hoped. There is no annoying light on the device (yea!), and the sound is better, but it's not super. We're still tweaking it. I got it because my 57y/o ears aren't quite as sharp as they used to be, and I have had issues hearing the tiny squawky speakers that come with the TV. This is an improvement, but not as much as I had hoped. I will, however, keep it, and I highly recommend Crutchfield to others.

Pros: No annoying LED light when idle (or running). Blends in everywhere as it is slate-black. It will probably never wear-out. Setup, once I got past my single technical issue, was a breeze. Crutchfield tech support answered quickly, was very friendly, USA based (I hate off-shore support), and got the job done. Solid construction.

Cons: Sound not quiet up to the level I had hoped, but an improvement nevertheless, and did not require me to hook up to a stereo system. I'd recommend it, keeping in mind it's only this much and not $2,000. Not made in U.S.A.

ZVOX SoundBase 420

Anonymous from Dayton OH on 5/10/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compared to the TV speakers, this unit provides much more solid bass, and with the dialogue enhancement feature enabled makes it far easier to understand what is being said. The three "surrond sound" programs do make some difference, but in my opinion are more show than real added value - but this is an all in one unit so I didn't expect a dramatic difference. The volume level is more than adequate for my smaller living room, but keep in mind that it does have a typical audio taper so there is a rather big jump around level 14 (out of 30 max). With output leveling enabled there seems to be delay before the unit decreases the volume, so loud programs can still cause a bit of a rush. Both the dialogue enhancement and output leveling need to be turned off if you plan on using the 3.5mm input (ln3) for music. The unit does a decent job of amplifying music, but don't expect it to sound like a good stereo or home theater unit. It is a nice looking addition and other than the improved sound it's hardly noticable sitting under my TV. The unit I received had a small amount of damage to one front corner, which I was able to repair so that it is barely noticable. As usual Crutchfield was very good about making an adjustment to the price for the damage.

Pros: Reasonable price for the much improved sound; easy to operate; basic functions easily controlled by the cable remote; low key apperance.

Cons: Optical audio didn't work - Crutchfield team had the same problem with getting the connectors to align and recognize the signal. The fix was to use the fixed analog output of my TV into one of the analog inputs. An optical cable is included, analog cable is not; also, if you plug an MP3 player into the extrra jack (ln3) when it is unplugged the unit defaults to the digital input (dln1) which is the one that wouldn't work - you then need to use the Zvox remote to switch to analog input ln1.

Just Buy One

MikeG from Copley, OH on 5/1/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a Samsung sound bar with which I was not even remotely satisfied. The difference is overwhelming. Rich sound quality throughout the range, no hollow or tinny sounds, the bass doesn't drown you in reverb unless you crank it up. If your hearing is damaged from age and/or abuse, the dialogue enhancement setting alone is worth the price of admission. It's not a home-theater system but it's a whole lot of audio quality for the money. The setup was simple and idiot proof, the interface with my cable box remote is seamless. The output leveling mode doesn't limit volume of commercials as well as I had hoped but as the mute button solves that minor issue

Pros: Great sound Dialogue enhancement Easy setup

Cons: Nothing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased a 55" Samsung Smart TV (from Crutchfield), but the sound was very poor at best. So, we began our search to enhance the sound without spending an arm and a leg to accomplish our goal. I am happy to say our search began and ended with Crutchfield. As always, Crutchfield was exceptional in helping us decide what equipment that best fits our wants and needs. The gentleman who helped us assurred us that we could return it within 60 days if it didn't not meet our needs. There is no chance that will happen! It was deliverd in 3 days and we had the 420 installed and set up in a matter of minutes. One of the first programs we watched was Journey and Foreigner on Palladia. This 420 rocks! We heard sounds that we have never heard on our Samsung. The 420 has plenty of bass, and has a slick remote allowing not only a quick volume control, but also changing modes for listening preference. The 420 comes on when we turn on our Samsung, yet can be activated and used independently from the TV allowing us to play our CD changer using the ZVOX as a "stereo system". We are diehard Kansas State fans and when we are not at the games, we plug in our I-Phone to the handy jack in front of the 420, "record" the game on our DVR box, then "slow down" our DVR synching it up to stream broadcast enabling us to listen to "our University broadcasters." It is the closest to a true Surround Sound "system" that I've heard without actually being one in of itself.

Pros: Great Sound, Easy Set up, excellent Remote, Functionality

Cons: It may shake your walls enough to vibrate things off shelves :)

Just What I'd Hoped For

Arthur from Stuart FL on 2/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm getting a bit hard of hearing, and my wife complains about the volume of the TV set. But volume isn't usually the problem. It's definition. Z Vox 420, with much broader dynamic range helps me hear much more at modest volume than the spearks in our Sony 55" TV. And when she's out of the out I can listen to music from the cable channels as though I was listening to a good music player. The set sits on top of the speaker unobtrusively. The separate bass and treble controls let me shape the sound. I was able to set up the unit from the documents and didn't need to call for help. I was disappointed to find that the remote does not come with two AAA batteries. Luckily I had some around the house, but neither the website nor the salesman I bought from over the phone reminded me to have some on hand. I don't need bigger sound. I need better sound and do not have room for multiple speakers (tweeters plus sub-woofer). This set-up has turned out to be ideal.

Pros: Compact. Easy to set up. Can be linked to the TV remote. Sound quality is quite good.

Cons: The pair of AAA batteries for the remote is not included and you're not notified they're required. I had to open the remote to find they were missing

Product Research

Overview: The ZVOX SoundBase 420 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 32"-50" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the SoundBase 420. The television should weigh 110 pounds or less. The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 27" width or 13" depth. You can also place the unit on a shelf directly below the TV, if desired.

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX SoundBase 420 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 45 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Five 2" Drivers: The ZVOX SoundBase 420 has five 2" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

5-1/4" Subwoofer: In addition to the five main speakers, the SoundBase 420 has a built-in down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound: The SoundBase 420 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet: The SoundBase 420 features a cabinet made of MDF (medium density fiberboard), the same material used in most high-end loudspeakers. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The SoundBase 420 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu-ray player that are not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The SoundBase 420 has independent bass and treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass and treble level, and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new SoundBase 420 can be programmed to respond to your current remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume up, volume down, mute, and power on the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The SoundBase 420 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

One Cable Connection: The SoundBase 420 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX SoundBase 420 offers analog and digital audio inputs:

  • Digital Inputs: The SoundBase 420 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept 2-channel PCM only (not compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals).
  • Analog Inputs: The SoundBase 420 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input. The front panel input is handy for connecting an iPod or other portable audio device.
