Our take on the Definitive Technology CS-8060HD

If you're serious about quality home theater sound, you'll be blown away by the difference it makes having a subwoofer built into your center channel. That's right: a subwoofer inside your center channel! Unlike conventional center channel speakers, the CS-8060HD has a 150-watt 8" powered subwoofer built right into its compact cabinet. It ensures that movie dialogue and special effects anchored to the screen have full bass impact, while also boosting your system's total bass output. You'll enjoy dynamic performance and a huge, three-dimensional soundstage from all three of your front speakers.

High-tech drivers for exceptionally detailed sound

cutaway view

The CS-8060HD has two 4-1/2" midranges flanking a 1" dome tweeter, for perfectly blended highs and mids. The pure aluminum dome tweeter has a silk surround, allowing it to dish out loads of sonic detail without ever sounding harsh. And thanks to Definitive's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) drivers, movie dialogue and special effects will sound clear, never muddy. The upward-firing woofer requires only one inch of clearance, so this powerful speaker works whether it's placed in the open or in an A/V cabinet.

Build a complete Definitive home theater system using perfectly matched bipole towers (see the BP-8020ST, BP-8040ST, BP-8060ST, and BP-8080ST) and surrounds (see the SR-8040BP and SR-8080BP).

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

One of THE best center channels I've heard. Clear, concise and great bass will fill your room.... if you can find one!

Pros: great sounding voice great bass looks great

Cons: not a con but be sure to have a couple of inches of clearance above for bass

Just what the doctor ordered.

Jazzyshel from Philadelphia, PA on 4/19/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the most articulate, accurate and theatre like center channel I have heard thus far. I have Polk, Klipsch, JBL, Acoustic research, by far this has fit the bill. Including a active sub in the center channel makes a big difference. I would highly recommend this center based on initial quality.

Pros: Active subwoofer built in.

Cons: Projected reliability may be less, because the speakers may outlast the electronics.

Definitive Technology CS-8060HD Center Channel Speaker

Kenneth from Hammond, IN on 4/10/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had this speaker for just over a week and I have not been disappointed. I replaced my Bose VCS-10 with and this speaker and I have to say having the built in sub makes a big difference as far as having a good full range from the lowest lows to the highest highs. My old speaker was very week on the low end. I also purchased the 8060 super towers to have matching voice from the front of my home theater and the trio just blows me away. I am using an Onkyo TX-NR929 receiver with a Denon DBT 1713 UD Blu-ray player. I also use a Roku 3 for streaming content.

Pros: Solid construction, amazing sound, powered sub adds great depth to the front end of your home theater.

Cons: None yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was amazed at how great this speaker sounded. I replaced a Bose system that was given to me, and I tested this speaker by itself and the clarity was so much greater. I wish I had bought this sooner.

Pros: Lots of clarity, adds some bass.

Cons: This is not a con for me, but it is big. Make sure you have plenty of room for this speaker.

James from Maryland on 3/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker works well with the 8060 towers and 8080 surround speakers and a Yamaha Advantage receiver. I did have to exchange one because the powered woofer wasn't working but the exchange through Crutchfield went very well. I would recommend this this setup to anyone.

Cons: If I had to find something wrong, it would be that I think I received older stock. I read online that the red light changes to green when powered just like the towers. On mine the powered light stays red all the time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded to the CS-8060hd from the Procenter2000. What a big difference. I'm hearing more detail and much for full dialogue than my previous center channel. Matches my BP-8060 towers perfectly. Worth the upgrads

Pros: Full and Rich dialogue

Cons: No Cons

Tight Bass with Sparkling Highs

Rob R from Tarzana, CA on 1/24/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned Def Tech speakers since 2003 and needed to upgrade my center channel. The CS-8060HD was a great choice. Dialogue is crystal clear and the 150W powered sub woofer is subtle and tight. It gives a nice impact to the system.

Pros: Sounds great, great projection, well finished enclosure.

Cons: none

Excellent sound!

Sound junky from Ohio on 1/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! This speaker's clarity is like, in your face! No more problem for "the guy that never listens to me" (her words, of course not mine!). I actually heard all the news the other day & was left with my mouth gaping open....... From the awesomest sound that Wall Street & Washington could spew out! ....... So.... The only thing I could do after that was listen to some relaxing music through my old Onkyo focusing on that center speaker. It is an exceptional speaker with realistic highs & off the hook lows. I thought the powered sub might be too much, but I now hear what I was missing. Once again, wow!

Pros: Powered sub is killer! Boss highs! Very close to "perfect" sound!

Cons: Make some room... It's a lil big.

Def Tech CS8060HD

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You can't possibly buy a Def Tech speaker and not be fully satisfied for any reason. This speaker is truly amazing in every way. It produces sound so real, clear, full, rich and deep that you can't possibly believe your ears.

Pros: Another amazing piece from def tech

Cons: Hhmmm, let me think... ARE YOU KIDDING?

Excellent Center Channel

Wesley H. from Florida on 11/9/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must start by saying this speaker is between two SM-65's. They are amazing and have a nice full low end sound. This center channel has much more punch. The tweeter can get very very loud. I am happy with my purchase and would recommend saving the extra dollars over the 8040. I am running a Marantz 5010. Audessey was used to set up the room and the sub volume was at 12 o'clock. I have since turned it to about 1 or so. Would recommend breaking the sub in for a month or so before really turning it up too loud.

Pros: Nice solid speaker box. Heavy as heck.

Cons: Cloth is meant to stay over the speakers. Not able to show off the speakers like the Sm65's. Port hole in back gets a bit noisy when pushing out large amounts of air. Not noticible unless the highs and mids arent loud enough to drown it out.

Great Sounding Center Channel

Old Ski Bum from Connecticut on 6/29/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had this speaker for about a month, so it's still breaking in! But the sound is phenominal. I watched American Sniper this weekend and the speaker matched the sound from the 8060-st towers perfectly. I give this speaker 5 stars! Enjoy!

Pros: Clear sounding vocals! Easy to setup!

Cons: None!

The best center channel I have owned

emanon whitney from Georgia on 12/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a new center channel speaker to replace an old Infinity center channel that I have owned for years. I decided that this model would be an excellent choice for my home office surround system which has B&W front and rear speakers, an Infinity subwoofer and a Denon AVR. I did a lot of research and liked that this speaker has a subwoofer. I have thought about replacing the Infinity subwoofer but that desire is less pressing now that I have this DefTeck center channel. I listen to music but I mostly have the tv on so the center channel does most of the work. I wanted a good one and this does a great job. I am very pleased. The room that this system is in is fairly small: 12' X 16'. I don't think this should be thought of as a replacement for a dedicated subwoofer.

Pros: Very pleasing sound. Great for dialog but also good for music. Clarity is excellent. Nicely supplements my subwoofer.

Cons: None that I have found.

Best of both worlds

DUB 23 from Owings Mills, Md on 11/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Def Tec center channel with a built in subwoofer is like having the best of both worlds. Replaced my Polk TSI C10 with this Beast!!! Nothing bad to say about Polk but this Def Tec is best center channel out on the market. If you don't have room for a subwoofer this is the way to go!!!!! The bass is amazing and the acoustics are incredible!!!!!!!!

Pros: Excellent if you don't have the space for a separate subwoofer.

Cons: Nothing at all!!!!

Clean sound but lacking low end

Worth every penny!

Dave from Discovery Bay, CA on 3/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After convincing my wife that we needed to upgrade from our 18 year old Klipsch speakers, I purchased these 8060 towers, the 8060 center and the 8040 surrounds. There wasn't much in the setup since the subs are built in. After talking to Definitive Tech to get the pros and cons of using the low pass sub cable, I decided to not use it. There were really no advantage to using it. The towers and center subs are integrated and require no cross over setting when using only the speaker wires. How simple is that? The built in subs sound great! The're sound is seamless, more realistic and natural than separate subs. The center speaker has a punch to it that my old one never had. I was amazed to find out how much bass is directed to the center channel that just wasn't picked up by my old Klipsch center speaker.

Pros: Amazing center channel speaker. I was amazed to find out how much bass is directed to the center channel that just wasn't picked up by my old Klipsch center speaker.

Cons: None!!!

Get this speaker with the sub built in

Jeff B from Cincinnati, OH on 2/17/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can finally understand the TV and movie dialogue without cranking the volume! I compared this to the lower center speaker model, which is the 8040, and I HIGHLY recommend getting this one with the built in subwoofer. The sound is crisp, clean and full. I have this in the top rack of my stereo cabinet with great results.

Pros: Rich, full sound with the sub.

Cons: I have a lot more to plug in with this and 2 8040 towers. Needed another power strip.

Best Center Ever

Chad S from Raleigh, NC on 1/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the most amazing center channel I have heard. The built in sub has enough capacity to fill the entire room, making the center channel very complete. The mid to sub transition is silky smooth and indistinguishable.

Pros: Sound

Cons: A bit large for a center channel, but that comes with having a built in sub.

Powered Subwoofer: The CS-8060HD features an 8" subwoofer powered by the built in 150 watt class D amplifier. The upward-firing woofer requires 1" of clearance above the enclosure.

Midrange: The two midranges used in the CS-8060HD are 4-1/2" second generation BDSS (Balanced Double Surround System) drivers. The midrange cones are injection molded polymer composite with cast aluminum baskets. BDSS is Definitive's patented technology that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges allowing longer and more linear excursion for greater clarity and detail. The new Linear Response Waveguide (patent pending) smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wide area (the HD in the part number stands for High Dispersion).

Tweeter: The tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, heat-treated to relax the crystal structure, then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs.

Voice-Matched: The CS-8060HD is a full-range low-distortion center channel speaker, timbre-matched to blend perfectly with the Definitive Technology BP-8060ST or BP-8040ST SuperTower main speakers.

Binding Posts: The speaker terminals are gold-plated, 5-way binding posts and will accommodate spade connectors, single or dual banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Line Input: In addition to the speaker level inputs (which are required), if the connected receiver/amplifier has a center channel line level output, it can also be used to send signal to the powered subwoofer section of the CS-8060HD (this input should not be used with the receiver's LFE output).

Bass Level: A rotary knob on the back panel controls the output level (volume) of the powered subwoofer.

Auto Power: When a signal is delivered to the CS-8060HD the amplifier automatically turns on and the rear panel LED lights. Once the signal is removed the amplifier automatically turns off (after about an hour).

Why did you buy this?

Have this center speaker for a few years in my theater room and upgrading my bedroom system. The quality of sound and impact will please any discriminating listener. [ ALBERT  Apr 12, 2016 ]
I recently upgraded my front L&R speakers to Definitive Technology BP-8060ST. My old center speaker could not match the sound quality. While listening to straight 2 ch. stereo music (loud!) it obviously didn't matter. But while watching movies or surround music, the old center brought the experience down a notch. So I decided to retire the old chap and bring in a new matched center for my awesome def tech's. Can't wait to hear the result... [ Michael  Apr 03, 2016 ]

I love my CS-8040HD but I am intrigued with the powered subwoofer on the CS-8060HD. Also, I want my center channel to match my BP-8060ST. [ M  Jan 25, 2016 ]

4 questions already asked

I am not the best person to ask although I do own this speaker. I don't really listen to music often and since my ear is not very sophisticated, I can't say that I have noticed much difference as far as break in. I have owned it for about 18 months but have not noticed changes over that time. I use this speaker as the center channel with two pairs of B+W speakers in my study. I use it almost exclusively for television while I work on the computer. I bought this knowing about timbre matching and problems of mixing different brands but I can't tell any real difference between this speaker and my B+W's. I honestly don't want to become that discerning. Ridiculous? I admit it. But it works for me and the sound is great. Rarely do I use the main system in the living room any more despite its bigger TV and bigger speakers except on date nights. Even when I am not multi-tasking using the computer, I tend to gravitate to my study to watch TV or listen to music because it is a cozier room it may be because of the quality of the sound or maybe its closer proximity to the kitchen... [ Hiram  Apr 09, 2016 ]
You Do not have to use the LFE input , It works better to just hook it up Like normal Speaker and set Speaker settings to Large [ Jeff  Jan 09, 2016 ]
You do not need to use the LFE input for the 8060 center channel. I just have mine connected via speaker wire and it works great. Almost too good sometimes because dialogue can be too bass heavy, so I keep my bass knob at less than 50% [ Jordan  Jan 08, 2016 ]
Yes. Lfe only runs thw sub. [ Robert  Jan 08, 2016 ]
No you don't need to use an LFE output for the sub to work. It's actually designed to use a high level (speaker level) or low level input (rca). It's meant to be used more for adding a powered sub to the center channel but can be used for LFE if needed though it works best to make the center act like your towers. It's been one of the best center channels I've owned as having that powered sub built in really makes the center stand out in a home theater system instead of being a "voice box" like most center channels. With your powered sub towers this would match perfectly as with my SM bookshelves it's so good that during late night viewing I turn my main sub off and still enjoy the output. [ RICHARD  Jan 08, 2016 ]
Your subs in the 8060 will work with speaker hookup also, you will need to switch the settings in your avr to large fronts to send the low signals to them. Put your sub on the Lfe output. [ FRED  Jan 08, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The CS8060 center channel can certainly handle more wattage but they are efficient enough to work pretty well with the Pioneer receiver. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Feb 19, 2015 ]  Staff
I think you would be better off purchasing a Klipsch center speaker that matches your reference series fronts. [ HANK M  Jan 16, 2014 ]
each manufacturer of speakers has its own characteristics of sound. I personally think Definitive speakers are more smooth and realistic sound than Klipch speakers which are more harsh and bright. I would want to stay within its own manufacturer when pairing with speakers. Unless if you are looking for certain characteristics for your center channel and front speakers. [ WILLIAM  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Hi, It is good center speaker, but I would go with the Klipch center speaker becuase the drives will match up with the Klipch RF-7II better. [ MICHAEL  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Hi Stephen. Yes it will of course work, but I wouldn't think this is the best option for you. For me, mix matching speakers is like mix matching tires on a car. I don't do it. It makes for a less quality drive, or a less quality listening experience. I don't know what model the Klipsch tower is, but I would recommend finding a Klipsch center, at least the tonal qualities that make a Klipsch a Klipsch should be retained. Another car comparison, a BMW drives like a BMW no matter the model. A Honda feels like a Honda no matter the model. I think speakers are much the same. In summary I would find a Klipsch center if I were you, or I would swap out everything for DT's. Hope this helps. [ IAN  Jan 16, 2014 ]
