Overview

Our take on the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Wireless

One day recently, my fellow A/V writer Deia Z. found herself in the office without a decent pair of headphones. Luckily, we had received a sample pair of the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Wireless, so she gave the retro-looking on-ear 'phones a test drive. Having previously spent some time with wired P5 headphones, she knew they would be light, elegant, and portable. And of course, they offer the freedom of playing music wirelessly from a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet. She paired up her phone and slipped them on. She reported that they fit neatly — well-padded and snug on the ears, but relaxed on the top of her head. Deia had worn many pairs of on-ear headphones in the past, and told me she found the B&W P5s much more comfortable.

Light, wireless headphones that are easy on the eyes

Solid build with strong Bowers & Wilkins sound

Close-up in black

Intricately designed aluminum earcup sliders give the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Wireless headphones a sturdy frame and striking look.

These headphones may look petite next to some of the massive headphones out there, but the beautifully designed aluminum sliders feel sturdy and durable. Same with the flexible padded leather headband. And the sound is up-front and powerful, with open highs and punchy bass.

The drivers have been designed and tuned to have the same sound signature as the wired version of the Bower & Wilkins' P5, even over Bluetooth. Deia also noted that while they don't have noise-canceling, the P5 Wireless 'phones actually did a good job of keeping sound in and out.

From our Bower & Wilkins P5 Wireless review

"Jason Isbell's song “Children of Children,” sounded beautiful and melancholy as it grew from a stripped, low-key affair to a powerful, complex violin- and guitar-fueled arrangement... The headphones' inviting soundstage lured me into the almost haunting opening of the song before delivering the full sensory onslaught."

Handy on-ear controls plus 17 hours of battery life

On the right earcup, you'll find a mini-USB charging input along with a series of buttons. You can expect up to 17 hours of wireless music playback on a full charge. The sliding button on the bottom of the earcup turns on the Bluetooth to pair with your device. Three hidden buttons on the side of the earcup let you pause and skip tracks or answer a call through the built-in mic.

If you remove the padding on the left earcup, you'll find an input for the included cable with a miniplug. If you're in a situation that doesn't call for wireless, connect these headphones to any 3.5mm headphone jack on a smartphone, tablet, or other device.

You can't miss with the P5's

Alan from Lees Summit, MO on 2/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked and pondered and watched YouTube reviews for several months before settling on the P5's. They have a warm sound signature which I have found that I prefer. Run them through a headphone amp/DAC for a phenomenal sound experience.

Pros: Great sound signature, portable, excellent design.

Cons: The audio cable seems kind of cheap and the way it connects to the headphone is annoying. They get uncomfortable after about an hour.

Enjoyable

Jeff from Brockport, NY on 1/10/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clear sound, light weight and comfortable. Wide soundstage, nice detail in instruments and vocals. Had the opportunity to compare them with competition between the 200 - 500 price range. The P5 's sounded the most musical... Just remember, garbage in garbage out, less refined music may sound better using the bass/treble heavy toys that seem to be popular...

Wow! - amazing in every way

AJ from Bensalem, PA on 12/30/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The only thing I can say about these is Wow! The sound is so rich! From Andrea Bocelli to Korn, every genre sounds amazing. I have tried it with pop, rock, metal, a cappella, and classical and you can hear every single note clearly. It's almost like hearing my music library for the first time. Even Apotheosis' O Fortuna sounds awesome (on lesser quality speakers, that one gets muddled easily) What's more - they are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used... like ear-pillows! Quality is exceptional and they feel fantastic. The magnetic earpieces feel really solid- like they are fused to the headphone - yet come apart very easily (in a good way) when adding the cord. They perform so well wirelessly that I haven't tested much via wired. Worth every penny of the price.

Pros: Sound is amazing; quality is solid; comfort is exceptional-- you won't want to take them off!

Cons: Haven't found any yet...

Great Headphone!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I like this headphone. I waited to give some time for the headphones to break in. I'm by no means an Audiophile expert, but I do love my music and appreciate quality sounds. My experience has been with Bose and I like their products because they make quality products. I've owned other brands as well, but this stacks up on top. The quality is outstanding, and it's not bassy and the mids and highs are just perfect. Being a bluetooth headset, it blows my mind how well it sounds. Although one thing I dislike it that it does drop in and out of bluetooth on my iphone 6. But I can put up with it since I hate wires getting in the way when I weight train. This indeed is a well built headphone. I tried Sennheiser and all the other brands, but this one suits my comfort and sounds better in my opinion. Now a regular person may not appreciate the price tag but if you appreciate your music it's a great investment. This is a great headset if you are looking for something different and unique.

Pros: Well built, light, great sound, and wireless

Cons: Bluetooth disconnects every now and then, volume button feels cheap compared to everything else; I mean everything else is well designed and I don't see how the volume button fits in.....,

Awesome sound!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These things are amazing. The sound quality is excellent, the highs and lows are great. Good bass without having to blow you eardrums out. Can't wait to hook these up to a record player to hear how good vinyl sounds. From the quality of the digital music I've heard with them, I'll bet I'll be able to hearhear every groove, crackle, and hiss that vinyl is famous .

Pros: Quality of the materials, the headphones don't make my ears sweat or heat up. Sounds ate top notch

Cons: A little tight on my head ( I have a big head, not a knock on the product)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent set of headphones. Well built. Zero problems. Have used only indoors so far. Classy looking. Great sound quality.

Pros: Quality construction, good sound & classy looking.

Cons: Might be too warm to wear for exercise since this type of headphone really covers your ears more than earbud types.

Great...but

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great service and really nice headphones. Well built and good sound quality. Problem for me is the fit was uncomfortable. May work better for someone else.

Pros: Quality and sound

Cons: Comfort

Solid Product

MarkH from Virginia on 8/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is excellent with and without the detachable wire, really indistinguishable difference. Note that the P5s are very sensitive to equalizer settings: e.g., if there's too much/ too little bass just adjust the equalizer to get the sound you desire.

Pros: sound consistency, battery life, feel.

Cons: a bit heavy and a bit sticky on the size adjustment.
