PSB Alpha PS1 powered speakers

Turn your workspace into a concert hall

Despite a tiny footprint, the PS1/SubSeries 100 package has enough power to fill a small- to medium-sized room with robust, detailed sound. Each speaker in the stereo pair features a 3-1/2" metalized polypropylene woofer and 3/4" aluminum dome tweeter designed to maximize your ideal listening "sweet spot." This allows the Alpha PS1s to "disappear" while projecting a large and detailed soundstage. And the speakers' rounded shape offers a stylish look for your desktop.

Quick and simple set up

Hooking up this system is easy and straightforward. RCA and minijack inputs let you listen to music from your computer or a portable player, like an iPod®, or another audio source. An included cable connects the two PS1s together, allowing the 2 x 20-watt amplifier built into the left speaker to power both. There's a dedicated subwoofer output on the left speaker for connecting the SubSeries 100. (Be sure to pick up a subwoofer cable, not included.)

Compact sub makes noise like the big boys

PSB packed an amazing amount of muscle into the ultra-compact SubSeries 100. With frequency response down to 39 Hz and an adjustable crossover, it works seamlessly with the PS1 speakers to create a pint-sized sound system that delivers serious, big-dog sound.

The sub's carefully engineered and computer-optimized 5-1/4" woofer is paired with an efficient, cool-running 50-watt Class D amplifier for tight, accurate low-frequency sound. You'll feel the rumble of explosions in your favorite Hollywood blockbusters and hear the crowds roar when you score a goal in your favorite game. It's great for music, too, like when you want to really hear the taut, tuneful sound of an upright acoustic bass from a classic jazz number.

Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers
SubSeries 100 Power Sub

Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers

Powered Speakers: The PSB Alpha PS1 Power Speakers combine PSB's most popular Alpha Series speaker design with a built-in amplifier to make a versatile desktop solution with enough acoustic output for a small to medium sized room. The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers are true hi-fi speakers engineered to upgrade today's audio and desktop listening experiences. Benefiting from forty years of proven acoustic excellence, these speakers use highly efficient amplifiers and state-of-the-art circuitry to create a powerful full-range system, transforming your favorite audio files into desktop concert.

True-to-Nature Sound: The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers are engineered for the true-to-nature sound for which PSB is known. Many small speakers employ tricks like exaggerating the treble or falsely boosting bass to overcome limitations and poor performance, but not so with the Alpha PS1. Using sound research and exhaustive testing at Canada's National Research Council in the nation's capital of Ottawa, the PSB team has designed the Alpha PS1 with extremely smooth and refined sound. You'll be pleasantly surprised by its output capability and solid tuneful bass response compared to that of the Alpha PS1's diminutive size. The response off to the sides of the speaker has the same smooth response as the sound directly in front, making the Alpha PS1s acoustically "disappear" by projecting a large and exquisitely detailed sound image.

Two-Way Speaker Design: Each PSB Alpha PS1 Powered Speaker houses a 0.75" aluminum dome tweeter and a 3.5" metalized polypropylene cone woofer with a rubber surround and oversized magnet structure. The tweeters utilize an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response. The polypropylene woofers provide accurate, detailed midrange/midbass.

Digital Amplifier: The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers are powered by highly efficient 20-watt x 2-channel RMS (40W x 2ch Peak) Class D amplifier which is built into the left speaker.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers feature an acoustically engineered ABS cabinet with UV coating. This bass reflex enclosure features a tuned slot port on the rear of the cabinet which extends low bass response.

Rear-Mount Volume Control: The PSB Alpha PS1 Power Speaker (Left) features a rear-mounted rotary volume control.

Analog Inputs: The PSB Alpha PS1 Power Speaker (Left) is fitted with a stereo RCA input and stereo minijack (3.5mm) input to connect an external audio source; such as your MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer, or TV.

Subwoofer Output: For those dynamic lows, a subwoofer output (mono-RCA) on the rear-panel of the left speaker allows you to connect a powered subwoofer.

USB Charging Port: The Alpha PS1 Powered Speaker (Left) is equipped with a USB (type-A) power port to charge your USB-enabled device; such as your smartphone or tablet. The USB charging port is rated at 5V/500mA.

AC Power Supply: The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers operate off of standard household AC current using the supplied universal power supply. The AC power adapter plugs into the left speaker, while the 6.5' PowerLink cable connects power to the right speaker.

Optional Speaker Stands: The PTB-1 tilt base (760PTB1, sold separately) is designed specifically for PSB's Alpha PS1 powered speakers. You can mount the PTB-1 to the Alpha PS1 to angle the speakers upward or flat for bettering stereo imaging, based on speaker placement. Two bases are included. Each base mounts to the bottom of the speaker using four machine screws. Each base also includes four self-adhesive rubber pads to provide safe and secure placement of your speaker.

SubSeries 100 Power Sub

5.25" Woofer/50W Amp: A specially designed 5.25" long-throw polypropylene woofer is computer optimized to get the best bass extension and dynamic range without distortion. An innovative filter pole shifting technique is used to squeeze the maximum deep bass from the specially engineered driver unit. The acoustic suspension enclosure is extremely rugged and resonance-free assuring that only the desired bass frequencies are radiated into the room for clean articulate bass response. The efficient and cool running 50W (continuous) Class D amplifier is capable of 100W dynamic peak power and carefully matched to the driver. By matching the amplifier to the driver characteristics a synergy is achieved that boosts the level of performance far beyond what could be achieved otherwise.

Volume/Crossover/Phase Control: Along with adjustable volume, there are controls for setting the crossover frequency (50-150Hz) and inverting the phase (0°/180°) to facilitate a perfect and seamless integration between the full-range or satellite speakers you have partnered with the SubSeries 100 powered sub.

Note: Recommended settings for the SubSeries 100 when matched with the PSB Alpha PS1 Powered Speaker are as follows - 0° phase, crossover half-way, and half volume (marked on sub). This combination creates an incredible micro-sized full range desktop system for your computer audio.

RCA/LFE Input: Line-level RCA inputs accept both stereo preamp outputs and the mono LFE channel input from an AV Receiver. Use the powered sub's Left RCA input for an LFE signal.

Auto On/Standby: When an audio signal is received by the SubSeries 100, the powered subwoofer turns on automatically. When no audio signal is detected, the sub's amplifier will automatically turn off after approximately 15 minutes.

Customer Q&A

Q
Will these play wirelessly through Airplay via Airport Express.

I'm using my PSB's connected to a Meridian Explorer USB DAC which is connected to a USB port on my iMAC. While I'm no expert on the Airport Express, I would think that if you connect the PSB's to the 3.5mm audio jack on the back of the Airport Express, Airplay would then send the wireless signal to the speakers via the Airport Express. You should probably verify this with someone who has actually tried it to make sure that it works properly.

Q
I have a new iMac 27, how does this match up?

The PSB Alpha PS1s and the subwoofer are a wonderful match for my big iMac. I use them with an Audioquest Dragonfly DAC, (and its extender, which squeezes into the USB ports on the iMac's rear end), and have been thrilled with the sound! the system is completely plug-and-play. I tinkered a bit with placing the speakers on my desktop, but found the sweet spot rather quickly. I put the subwoofer on a separate stand behind the desk, hidden by the iMac, and it sounds great there. I strongly commend this paring of source and speakers, especially with a DAC, and an Audioquest cable.
