Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The PSB CS1000 outdoor speakers are built to provide amazing sound quality in the most challenging environments. These weather-proof speakers deliver crisp highs with their 1" titanium dome tweeters. And the 6-1/2" woofer pumps out deep bass with a forward facing port and a plug you can remove to add bass punch. Each CS1000 has a bracket that lets you mount it horizontally or vertically. Once mounted, each speaker can be swiveled to direct the sound wherever you like.
PSB Canada knows as much about harsh weather as they do about high fidelity. The sturdy interior of the CS1000 cabinet features extensive bracing to put a damper on vibration. All materials are tough enough to withstand temperature and moisture extremes. Other protective measures include their UV resistant enclosure, rust-proof speaker terminals and rubber seals and gaskets. These speakers will provide years of music enjoyment whether you're out listening on your urban terrace, on the boat dock or just cooling off in your toddler's pool.

Great speakers! They sound awesome!
Wanted to extend my home's Zone 3 (the guest bedroom) to the garage. Ran an Audioquest Golden Gate interconnect in crawl space to garage from tape monitor output of NAD C165BEE preamp (a Crutchfield purchase) in bedroom. Now all rooms in house (and garage!) are connected somehow to the Denon AVR-X7200W (another Crutchfield purchase) as the hub, in the living room. The PSBs exceeded my expectations. Went with outdoor speaker primarily to help with placement. Have them mounted on garage ceiling, toed in about 30 degrees. Powered by an Outlaw RR2160, you hear every musical nuance (fingers running on the fret board on Cash's Unchained) that you wouldn't expect to hear on a fully enveloped outdoor speaker. No need for a subwoofer. One thing these do come with the base plugs inserted into the ports. I removed them after about three weeks of listening. Opened-up overall sound quality, but didn't really notice an increase in base response with them out, as base was already excellent and accounted for. High quality stuff. Good enough for indoor audiophile listening if you ask me. Crutchfield delivered when they said they would. Overall very pleased!
Pros: Great detail, base, sound, build quality, value.
Cons: Mounting was a little fussy.
I typically do not write reviews on products, but these speakers are the exception. I read many reviews on several different brands/models of outdoor speakers, and felt the reviews on the PSB CS1000 were very positive. So I purchased them, installed them, and wow they sound fabulous. I could not believe how good they sound for outdoor speakers. Full sound that you can hear over my whole back yard and down to my boat dock, approximately 150 feet away. I have several outdoor speakers at two homes, Boston, Klipsch, and "off brands" and by far, the CS1000 are superior. I will be looking to purchase other PSB speakers in the future! Also, service from Crutchfield was great. One of the mounting brackets was missing threading in the set screw hole. Crutchfield sent out new brackets immediately, no questions asked.
Pros: Fantastic Sound, Easy mounting, Adjustable positioning
Replaced a pair of speakercraft rock speakers with these. Mounted them on 4x4 posts near the pool (all black to blend in with plantings). Big improvement in sound (mids and highs) although I was expecting better bass given the size of these speakers (maybe better if mounted under an eave with bass plugs removed). These sound better than the Definitive Technology speakers I have by my back patio. Mounting instructions weren't very clear, so I just figured it out on my own. Literature is also not clear on how weatherproof these really are, so I will look for covers when I'm not using them. Given my mounting environment, it would be nice if it were easier to access and remove the bass plugs on weekends.
Pros: Easy to mount, good highs and mid range Easy to adjust direction of speakers both vertically and horizontally
Cons: Poor mounting instructions Not sure how weatherproof these are Hard to access bass plugs
Awesome sound, easy to imstall.
Excellent clarity, robust bass for size, and able to withstand four seasons and all the elements. Had two from last year and enjoyed the sound quality so much I bought two more. Now with four arranged around a patio dining area with each channel along one side music envelops the gathering or meal. Benefits from connection using sturdy outdoor grade wiring and PSB equalization settings from NAD D7050.
Pros: Weather and climate tolerant Sturdy Clear and pleasing sound with more than sufficient bass
Cons: Mounting instructions could be clearer. First set was trial and error learning. Second set was much easier.
Great Speakers - Great Sound!
If I could give it six stars, I would. I replaced a pair of B&W outdoor speakers that I really liked, but age and weather finally took its toll on them (this spring season I found I'd lost my left channel). I really appreciate faithful audio reproduction, and in a word, these speakers are AWESOME! I'm really glad I gave PSB a shot this time around. Their low-end is deep and tight, and their mid-range and high-end is really nice and clear. The mounting system is very simple, and the speakers provide a nice amount of adjustability. If you are looking a higher-end outdoor speakers, I'd seriously consider these PSBs.
Pros: Nice sound, Appearance
Cons: Cost (but you get what you pay for)
Very happy with overall sound. Better than average bass, nice clarity mids and highs.
Pros: Solid build, good sound for outdoor speaker, good bass and mids.
Cons: Highs ok, could be better but alround sound very enjoyable. Mounts on wall well but not on ceiling very well.
I was debating getting the smaller PSB CS500 outdoor speakers but found open box CS1000's in white. So I saved almost $50 for the box being open. A couple set screws were missing so I called and they arrived in a day or two. All I can say is wow, what a speaker! I've heard some whispers on a track that I never knew were there. Just love the crystal clear clarity of PSB speakers. Bass is more than enough. They are pretty large but look really good once installed and you can even feel the quality in the build as you handle them. You just cannot go wrong with these. Worth every single dollar!
Pros: Clear, precise sound. Very high quality build.
Cons: None whatsoever.
After I got everything set up and working was able to hear things I've never heard before on my old outdoor speakers. I was truly amazed how good these speakers sound. Well worth the cost.
Pros: Great sound
Quite an impressive set of speakers. They work WELL! These replaced a set of Bose that turned to junk (turns out they really always sounded like c-ap. Aside from the mount not lining up right (it worked out fine) we have no issue. BASS is no issue either. Highly recommended!!!!!
Pros: Easy to Mount, Sound Great, Great Fidelity.
Cons: Mount was not quite square. Nothing else
great outdoor speakers
I researched online for outdoor speakers, had to rely on reviews as could not listen to any. Almost bought def tech 6500 or klipsch, both were around 400, both got good reviews, but decided to go for the extra 150 for psb based on one reviewer who said he listened to all 3 and no comparison. Well I only have the psb 1000- but there is no way any outdoor speaker can sound better- I have listened to many friends' speakers , these are in class all their own. these speakers are better than most indoor speakers, my indoor speakers- jbl and Martin Logan , they play loud, clear, very balanced; actually I had to turn down bass on receiver to -4, because they were rattling the deck, now they are fine. they are mounted under a deck facing the lake and sound incredibly clear about 100' away on the dock, turned up about 50%. If you have the money, don't think twice about these speakers
Pros: balanced , very deep bass, can play very loud, no distortion
Cons: big size, heavy
WOW, real happy with my PSB's. I already have a pair of bookshelve PSB's in my office so was familer with killer performance. The CS 1000's are outside on my patio. I mounted under the soffit of my huse about 20" apart. I have them hooked up to my Sonos system, using a Connect Amp. Separation and sound is out of this world. Used to lug out some old Infinity speakers when we would have people over, now all set up. Sound great at low levels as well as Loud! Plenty of bass to boot! Woud recommend again and again!
Pros: Sound, separation, mounting brackets, construction, and appearance!
Cons: Can't find any.......
i am so amazed! As soon as I can I am replacing my indoor speakers with PSBs. I am sold.
Pros: Sounds like you there live. I hung mine in corners and removed the port covers. Delivers clear rich sound.
Cons: They are big. But you'll get over it once you hear your favorite music.
Pros: Sounds good
I think I will give these speakers a 5 star rating do to the fact they sound great ! I picked up some Definitives before these which are going back. I'm using a high powered amp. with these speakers. They have very good bass response and the highs are clear. Mids. seem a slight bit lower than some of the 2 way speakers out there, but that is how I like it anyway. With the port plug removed it sounds great with most music. If you are listening to rap music you may hear the normal whooshing of air of the port with the plug removed. I like the sound just fine with the plug installed, makes it sound tighter, more accurate, and still performs with plenty of bass. The efficiency is a bit lower which requires more amp power to get it to hit harder. So keep in mind you will want a amp with 100 WPC minimum to give you loud music, if you like it loud...lol. I prefer it fairly loud, but extremely clear ! I do not care for the mounting bracket. It does not have the usual 2 screws in the middle, which you can mount it this way. However it actually has 6 screw holes. I chose to use the 6 screw mounting option. I had to modify how I was going to do this with 3-2"X4" s in a row screwed together. Worked out so no big deal. It does however allow you mount the speakers vertically and still point them up or down. Equipment powering mine are as follows, Carver: CT-17 Preamp. Adcom: GFA-555 Power Amp. Pioneer: PDR-W739 CD player/Writer. Polk Audio: SR-H1000 Siriusxm Tuner.
Pros: Great Sounding, no cone pop with bass turned up.
Cons: Don't care for the bracket.
I am so very pleased with these speakers. They seem well made, and the sound you get from them is bigger than the size would indicate. They will rattle a bit with too much bass/volume, but at that point, your neighbors will be calling.
Pros: Sound great
Cons: Little weak on bass at loud volumes
These outdoor speakers perform as if they were high end book shelf speakers. I feel they are are a cut above my old Electro-Voice EVID 4.2 outdoor speakers, better bass definition and voicing. Mid range is extremely clean and natural with the proper amount of quality bass, no sub needed unless you really enjoy the extra low end authority.
Pros: Excellent sound quality...
Cons: I received a defect pair on my first delivery, quality control at the manufacture could be improved.
I first ordered and received the PSB CS500 outdoor speakers. They were great speakers, but just didn't have the "umph" in terms of bass that I was looking for. With my 20' x 20' deck, I needed something with a little more bass and power. I called Crutchfield and the customer service I received regarding my return of the CS500's and the subsequent purchase of the CS1000's was EXCELLENT. Onto the CS1000's - Wow! - what a difference over the CS500 in terms of sound depth and bass. I can't say enough good things about these units. Solid case, awesome manuverability with the mounting brackets and they look great. Sound quality is just superb. This was my first PSB purchase and it won't be my last. I'm very impressed with this company. Nice gold plated terminals on the back that screw down to hold the speaker wire on.
Pros: Overall, these are top-notch speakers that will fill your outdoor area with great, deep rich sound.
Cons: This is very minor: the speakers come with a rubber "cover plate" to cover the terminals. Well, this rubber cover plate haas little tabs that sit in the back of the speaker to hold the cover plate on with friction. The only problem is that my quality speaker wire is a bit stiff and doesn't lay perfectly flat as it exits under the opening of the rubber cover, therefore, the rubber cover doesn't sit flush and will fall off.
I have these in my backyard under my covered porch. Placing them with the brackets was pretty easy and the sound so far has been superb. They project very well and the bass is suprisingly good. We have a pretty good size backyard with a pool and sitting area and I can easily hear the speakers no matter where i am in the yard.
Pros: fantastic sound, great bass
Cons: A bit pricey but I didn't find anything in this range for significantly less
Sound great, plenty of bass. Nicely efficient at lower volumes. Be sure to read dimensions.
This is an amazing speaker. I guess the bass response blew me away the most. I agree with others who have said this speaker does not require a subwoofer to deliver the goods. The speaker seems to be very solidly built and can handle more volume than I need. I know it is kind of pricey, but it is worth it.
Pros: Amazing bass from a 6.5 inch woofer. Speaker can be adjusted two ways--- tilting up and down and rotating side to side----you can really fine tune the balance of sound..
Cons: My only minor complaint is the rubber plate that covers the wiring terminals has about a half inch hole for the speaker wire to go through. After installation the hole remains big enough for an assortment of critters to enter and set up house in that nice little cave. I just stuffed a wad of clay in there to seal up the hole. I would suggest PSP supply a piece of foam or something to seal off the hole after running the speaker wire through it.
Huge sound field that is deep and rich. I can hear the music from each speaker throughout my poold deck area. The bass reproduction is as good as younwill get without using a sub. They are much larger sn anticipated.
Cons: None. They are great speakers!
I was strongly considering Bose or Klipsch before calling Crutchfield to discuss the better option between the two. The rep recommended the PSB CS 1000 and indicated the sound was amazing, so I went with his recommendation and bought these speakers. Very easy install with straightforward directions and really strong outdoor mounts. It took me perhaps 1/2 hour to install these on our new patio. Then .... I plugged in to a Denon receiver and was absolutely blown away by the sound. It is unbelievable how good these speakers sound. I asked if I needed to add a sub-woofer and the rep told me it wasn't needed; now I know why. The range of sound that comes from these speakers is absolutely stunning; both from low to higher volumes. It sounds like you are in a concert when they're cranking. The base (ensure you pull the rubber plug out once installed) is unreal and reverberates through your chest ... I could not be happier with these speakers. Do yourself a favor and buy these... you will not be disappointed.
Pros: Look great; easy install; mounts are very easy to work with and the sound is wonderful - beyond what I expected.
Cons: A little bulky for a do - it your-selfer standing on a ladder but not that bad. Really no cons that I can think of.
PSB is one of my favorite speaker brands. Paul Barton attends to every detail in every speaker they release, and it shows. I've never heard a bad sounding speaker from them, and these were no different. To test them out, I hooked them up in my dad's recording studio, where he has two Alesis Monitor One speakers. The CS1000's blew them out of the water. The bass, when listened close-range, was so deep that I had to go around the room checking for the presence of a subwoofer (there wasn't). That's due to the port that's on the front. There's no need whatsoever to add a subwoofer to these, the bass is that good. As far as the mids and highs go, the mids are super smooth, as PSB is known for. I agree with the reviewer before me, who says that the highs are laid back, but to me this is a very good thing. Too often speakers just scream at you, and it's refreshing to hear one that doesn't. I loved the sound coming from these, it doesn't get much better for outdoor speakers. The only problem is size. I didn't look at the dimensions when I bought these, and I should've, because they're huge! They're big for bookshelf speakers, let alone ones that are meant to be mounted outdoors! The wife was not too happy when she saw them, so unfortunately, they're on their way back to Crutchfield as I write this review. It's a shame, because I really fell in love with the sound of these speakers. I ordered the smaller CS500's, and I'll write a review for those as soon as they get here.
Pros: Plenty of bass, but not at all overwhelming. Mids and highs compliment the bass well. Very balanced sound. Mounting bracket is very flexible, allowing the speaker to be maneuvered in basically any direction. Sound great soft, but can get loud if you want them to.
Cons: HUGE! I never knew outdoor speakers got this big! Not worth losing a star, but keep this in mind.
When my 10 year old, but highly acclaimed N.E.A.R. outdoor speakers finally gave out, I started my search. After much research and data gathering online, I was fortunate to find a large number of contenders available locally for audition. I have audiophile ears, so this was a challenging task. But after listening to quite a few, with the JBL's and the Phase Technology SPF-35's as close contenders, the PSB CS1000's were a cut above: closer to a high-end speaker and less of an outdoor box. Good and deep bass, rich lower mids, but the highs a bit laid back (so the shimmer of cymbals is not ringing clear in space). Overall, I'm satisfied as they are better than the rest I've heard. Good value for the $$.

Many different offerings for outdoor. Torn between Polk Atrium 8, Klipsch AW-650 and these. I own different Klipsch and Polk both are great. Trying PSB on overall specs, wattage and resistance to elements. [ Jason Sep 14, 2017 ]

Before I made my purchase decision for new speakers I was lucky enough to do a head to head live test demo of: Def Tech 6500, PSB CS1000 & Boston Acostcis Voyager 70. All the speakers we tested & mounted in my open patio area which is about 500 sq. feet. Both Speakers were wall mounted 15 ft apart & just below the eve of the roof. The technical spec's of these speakers were about the same but not identical. Cost is a little less expensive than the CS1000 & BA Voyager 70 speakers. Def. Tech 6500 sound is solid but the base generates a very boomy sound which can become a distraction which may result in lose of music detail. However some people enjoy the boomy sound. Also, noticed the build quality of the speaker was not the same quality as the CS 1000 & BA 70. ( I was upgrading my BA 50's & 60s which I've had for over 12 years! Yes they show their age but they still work) The CS 1000 is by far a superior speaker in every way you can imagine. The sound & build quality will impress you. The speaker does require a little more power to operate but maybe worth it to you. The best speakers for the money IMO if you can find them on-sale are the BA 70 speakers. Build Quality & sound are both rock solid and will leave you impressed. Good Luck! George [ George Aug 11, 2017 ]
I have one plugged that's a bit more exposed to weather, and one unplugged that's more protected. You get a bit more boom in the bass feel unplugged, but the difference is nominal in my opinion. I think these are great speakers. [ WILLIAM T Aug 11, 2017 ]
The low end is not as defined or strong. You would definitely notice it if you compare before and after. Don't think it would make you think "These are awful" every time you listen to music. Also, not sure how important the plug is if the speakers are sheltered and angled down somewhat. I think the issue the plugs solve is wind-driven rain getting past the screens and into those cavities, not just moisture and humidity. [ Michael Aug 10, 2017 ]
Mine are retceiving signal from dedicated output and working well above my expectations [ Vesselin May 14, 2015 ]
I have a pair with 3 other pairs of speakers all in one amp 100W and haven't had a problem - these are fantastic outdoor speakers [ DANIEL May 14, 2015 ]
One pair will be enough unless you have more than 20 people in your pool at one time. I have one pair of speakers powered by an amp that is only 45w x 2, and they fill my back yard. Aprox 40' x 100'. They are great sounding outdoor full range speakers! [ JASON Mar 15, 2016 ]
We used a pair in a space that is bigger than this - and it's pretty good. Seems, the base becomes lost the larger the area. These replaced a set of Bose outdoor speakers and they're definitely an improvement. There is only so much you can do without infuriating the neighbors! Waiting for more wireless options. [ Jon Mar 15, 2016 ]
You shouldn't but it really depends on what you are driving them with and location. I am using a Niles 1230 with the speakers mounted against my house and they sound amazing. If I crank them everyone on my block can hear them. [ Jeffrey Mar 15, 2016 ]
Absolutely. One pair is all you will need. Make sure you have a good amp - I recommend NAD. [ Dale Mar 15, 2016 ]
Those speakers will be fine as long as you mount them 8-10' up on the house and point them both inward 40 degrees or so. [ CHRISTOPHER Mar 15, 2016 ]
You will hear the sound across the length of the pool, but the sound will obviously be better at one end than the other. With 2 pairs it will be better and when you are in the middle of the pool you will enjoy music from both sides -similar to a concert. [ Peter Mar 15, 2016 ]
It depends on how high you play the music.. If your cranking heavy metal or Rap you might want 4. Or if you have big crowd, I have 6 but they are spread out over big area and pool. The sound quality is very good though [ ALFRED Mar 15, 2016 ]
These speakers sound good half a block away from the deck I have them mounted on! One pair should be more than enough. [ Bobby Dean Mar 15, 2016 ]
These should work fine with the EOS. You will connect from the speaker output on the EOS to the speaker inputs on these. [ Jeff Mar 09, 2015 ] Staff
