Overview

Our take on the PSB CW50R

The PSB pedigree shows through in the CW50Rs ability to sound real. Whether the instrument is a screaming guitar, a hushed voice, or a booming cannon, its presence will be palpable. The 5-1/4" woofer pairs with a 3/4" rotating tweeter to deliver striking sound to large and small listening areas. They're voice-matched for use with cabinet-built PSBs and of course, they'll mesh with PSB's in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, too. Any way you choose you'll be delighted with the results.

PSB speakers take the high ground

True: Everyone loves high-quality speakers, whether listening to music or watching movies and TV shows in immersive surround sound. False: all great speakers take up space in your room. PSB's CW50R installs overhead in your ceiling and delivers crystal-clear sound — without requiring an inch of floor-space. And a moisture-resistant design lets you use these speakers in damp areas like your laundry room or bath, as well as outdoors under eaves.

Great Speakers, Good Value, Easy Install

Kyle from Round Rock, TX on 1/15/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These perform as well, perhaps a little better than I expected (rear channels). I mounted them in the ceiling so was worried about the sound as in reading it sounded like they were made to use the wall space enclosure (a 4" x 15" x 96" I believe was mentioned). What I did in the ceiling was leave insulation but push it away from the speaker and then place a small piece of drywall across the joists. I had thought about building a small box to place over, but after listening decided it would not be necessary. To make the cut cleaner and save me some time, I bought an adjustable drywall hole saw. These are much cheaper than a multi-use hole saw that could cut through wood. I picked mine up from a hardware store for right around $30. The templates that come with the speakers have a cut out of about 6 5/8. With my adjustable saw set at 6 1/2, it was perfect for the speaker. The tweeter is on a swivel type attachment so it isn't important which way you turn the speaker. You simply point the tweeter toward the center of your listening area. The grills are uniform and come with adhesive PSB logos. I didn't use these as the logos don't look very nice. I'm not sure if from warehouse storage or if it's just the way they are, but mine weren't clear. Because it was so uniform throughout, my thought is that's just how they are, but looked like what you would see in plastics after age/heat exposure. Overall, very pleased. They perform well, have a very small footprint, and were easy to

Pros: Installation, footprint, quality, great for rear surround if furniture on back wall

Cons: adhesive brand logos look cheap

Mostly adequate for 5.1

Colin from Redwood City, CA on 11/12/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to replace a set of four (4) MCM 51-880 5 1/4" ceiling speakers that the contractor installed in our remodel house seven years ago. One of them blew out after I upgraded my AV receiver from a Pioneer to an Onkyo TX-RZ810. My setup is 5.1 - Polk subwoofer and Bose center and these as front and rear in the ceiling. I didn't want to cut a larger hole and these fit in after only a little filing of the drywall. The kit comes with hole cutting template and that made the hole sizing easy. They are a huge improvement over the MCMs and work adequately as front and rear speakers with the amp crossover set to 90Mhz. For the most part I get adequate sound presence and even amplitude from low to high.

Pros: Easy installation

Cons: Low bass levels

Great Sounding Lightweight Speaker

Adam from Seattle, WA on 8/9/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Simply put, I like it. I bought this speaker on sale, and while it didn't have a review, I figured it didn't hurt to try. My concerns were mainly around the low efficiency of the speaker while being limited to 50 watts. Keep in mind low frequencies use a lot of watts for the same volume that just a couple watts can produce on higher frequencies, most people don't us the 100 advertised on receivers and most receivers don't truly give it. And also think, it takes 2x roughly the watts to produce the same volume for every 3db drop in efficiency (think magneplanar speakers). I hooked this up to a standard Yamaha surround receiver and tested it out. And for the price and size, it packs a warm and solid punch. Plenty loud enough for my purposes. Light on the bass (a little more than I expected), but that can be compensated with a subwoofer like one does with bookshelves. The sound is adequate for the price, but I wouldn't use them as primary speakers or anything in a room. Mainly due to their lack of low and mid bass.

Pros: Good sound, small package and all for a low low price!

Cons: Lack of bass, highly inefficient speakers

Features

Overview: The CW50R from PSB Speakers is a pair of high-performance ceiling-mount speakers. The CustomSound CW Series of in-wall/in-ceiling speakers incorporate the same speaker arrays as found in PSB's highly acclaimed Platinum-series speakers for true audiophile performance.

Drivers: The CW50R speakers employ a 5-1/4" fiberglass-textured polypropylene woofer, which has a higher cone mass and enhanced motor strength for higher power handling. The rubber surround damps resonance and provides exceptional durability. The low-resonance 3/4" aluminum dome tweeter delivers exceptional clarity in the high frequencies. The tweeter has a pivoting mount, allowing it to be aimed towards the listening area for best response.

Frames: The white ABS plastic frames extend approximately 3/4" beyond the grilles on the finished side. The frames also extend about 5/8" beyond the rough opening cutout. The speaker requires a 6-1/2" cutout in the ceiling or wall for mounting the speaker.

Grilles: The speakers are equipped with flush-mount aluminum grilles for a clean and unobtrusive look. The grilles have hundreds of precisely-sized perforations to make them acoustically transparent. The grilles and frames are paintable to match any decor. Self-adhesive "PSB Speakers" logo badges are also included.

Mounting Options

Mounting Clamps: The CW50Rs have 4 toggle-style mounting clamps for installing the speakers in the wall or ceiling. When a Phillips-head screwdriver is first applied to the mounting screws, the clamps "toggle" out from a rest position (out of the way for easy insertion), turning 90 degrees and into a position to clamp firmly against the wall.

Pre-construction Bracket: For new construction, the optional CK50R pre-construction bracket is recommended (available from the manufacturer). The bracket is designed to be a "hole-saver" to indicate where the speaker should be installed before the drywall goes up. In addition, an optional BBX-88 Performance Enclosure (available from the manufacturer) defines the optimal enclosure volume for the CustomSound series speakers, and mounts between two studs behind drywall.

Weather Resistant: The CW50R is weather resistant to enable installation in moist environments, such as bathrooms or indoor pool areas, or outdoors in porch ceilings or under eaves. The polypropylene cones with rubber surrounds, stainless steel fasteners, aluminum grilles and ABS plastic frames can withstand moisture, but the back of the speaker should be protected. The speakers should not be installed in an area that is totally exposed to the weather.

Looking to update in-ceiling speakers. These are a great speaker for the price. [ O  Feb 01, 2017 ]
I have a small living area without many options for surround speakers as the sofa is against the rear wall. Side walls aren't an option as one side is windows and the other mostly open. It was ceiling placement or no surround speakers. [ Kyle  Dec 22, 2016 ]
