Our take on the PSB Image B4

Potent bookshelf speakers provide exceptional sound

When we heard these little gems demoed in our sizeable training room — and without a subwoofer — we were impressed by their wide soundstage, and by the overall sonic impact. Use a pair of B4s with your home office computer, send a pair off with the kids when they go to college, or mount four or more around your home theater room to get impressive surround sound. The Image line borrows from driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family, as well as the top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

Advanced drivers for clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image B4s each feature a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. The long-excursion, high-output woofer uses the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps it deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with a sense of impact and immediacy. You'll also marvel at the detailed imaging, and wide soundstage produced by these compact speakers.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Don't let the size fool you. These speakers sound like they're twice their size. Yes you lose some low end with a 4" driver but they fill the room. I have them paired with a 8" powered sub and the sound is incredible.

Pros: Size, sound, and price.

Huge sound

Jas K from White Plains, NY on 8/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was limited in to a paritcular height when purchasing these bookshelf speakers. I was recommended Polk speakers but could not make them fit in my bookshelves. After spending some time reviewing various speaker brands and models I came across the Image speakers. These speakers are great, they fit well and provide ample sound for my 20' x 20' living room. The sound clarity is great and I hope in time to purchase a central speakle to compliment these. The Crutchfield customer service has been excellent and I was amazed with how well these speakers were packaged and dispatched. Wonderful purchase,I highly recommend these speakers to anyone.

Pros: Clear sound, large sound from such small speakers

Cons: None

sound very good

lucas from Groves, Tx on 8/3/2014

I have these paired with a NAD c356dac streaming sonos at I am very impressed. The bass carries suprisingly very well in my 20x15 living room. The highs are detailed and warm, very neutral and enjoyable sound. For $170 Its a steal.

Pros: Excellent mids and high and even decent bass when paired with a good amp.

Excellent Value!

John from West Des Mojnes, IA on 6/28/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the speakers based on a recommendation from my Crutchfield representative, Zach. It was excellent advice! Paired with a Sony receiver, the speakers are a little tight just out of the box. So I would spend a few days running various types of music at various volumes while I was away at work. After about 30 to 40 hours of play, the sound is more rich and full.

Pros: excellent value and great for classical and most classic jazz music

Cons: as the low-end is not as deep without a sub woofer, I probably wouldn't recommend these for loud large space rock music.

Incredible Deal

DougM from Honolulu, HI on 6/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At $179 these speakers are unbeatable. Tight, punchy bass which is quite deep and full for such a small box and woofer. I feel no need for a sub. Rich, clear open mids and crisp, airy highs with no hint of shrillness. They play amazingly loud without strain. They have a great soundstage and precise imaging, with a real three dimensional quality unmatched by any speaker i have ever owned at any price. I couldn't be happier. Way to go, Paul!

Pros: Amazing sound quality, terrific tonal balance and imaging. Superb build quality.

Cons: Not for headbangers who want to shake the walls and ruin their ears.

PSB B4's make a great computer speaker set up

Alock from Gloucester, MA. on 6/17/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these as PSB B4's on sale as they're being discontinuing for the new Image X line-up. A complete steal for $179.99 I have them paired with a NAD D3020 Hybrid amp (which I love) & a Mordaunt-Short Aviano 7 (10" sub 175 watts) They are fine speakers. I'm about 25 hours in for break-in & they keep sounding better as times goes by. Excellent soundstage for such a small (4" driver) They are very neutral sounding & maybe a tad polite, but that's what I like. They sound very "soft" & clean. If you're using these for bookshelf scenario & you're keeping the volume @ a reasonable level, then they'll shine for you. Nott o say that they distort @ higher volumes (they don't) just that you can't expect miracles from a 4" woofer & 1" tweeter. If you're using these as a computer desktop speakers like me, them do yourself a favor & buy the AudioEngine DS1 stands. These will help tip the speaker upwards to ensure the tweeters make it even to ear level. They fit perfect with the B4's as well. Grab them now while you can!

Pros: Size vs. output! Insane quality speakers for short money! I purchased the Dark Cherry finish & even though it's a laminate, it's appearance is beautiful IMHO.

Cons: Could be a tad more efficient, but I'm splitting hairs.

excellent little speakers

khk from st louis, mo on 2/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit uncertain about buying these. I thought they were pricy, compared to other similar speakers, and the vinyl finish wasn't particularly appealing to me. But, I got them anyway and I couldn't be happier. They sounded great right out of the box. I have them hooked up to a 15 year old 25 wpc yamaha shelf system in a small, 11 x 14, room and they fill it nicely. I don't feel the need for a subwoofer at all. They sound very open, detailed and natural and had just the right amount of thumping bass which is exactly what I was looking for. I've also tried them out in a much larger room with a better amp (nuforce dda-100) and while the lack of bottom end was more evident, it still sounded very good. At greater volume, they do struggle a bit and bass gets muddy but that's to be expected with 4 inch woofers. Overall, very happy with the purchase. And, they look fairly nice as well. Cabinet has a nice curvature to them which makes them look rather unique. Bottom of the cabinet is curved too but little adhesive rubber feet are provided so they can stand leveled.

Pros: Great sound and no breaking period necessary, although, i do think that they did get better after a week of use.

Cons: Not a big fan of vinyl wood grain finish but they do look nice from distance.

Good surround speakers for PSB system

Ethan from Cambridge, MA on 10/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to fill out the surround on my PSB image system. These little guys are light (can be easily wall mounted), and have crisp sound. is modality. I hear these are sufficient as standalone bookshelf speakers, but I have not tested them.

Very impressed with the sound of these speakers. I needed to replace an aged bose system, but did not want to spend the same amount. The Crutchfield adviser recommended the PSB and he was spot on. Thank you Crutchfield. I will be ordering the Sub and outdoor PSB speakers, next.

Pros: Sound, size and price.

Cons: None

Great mains for a two-channel 2.2 system

Atlanta from Atlanta, GA on 6/22/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as main speakers for a two-channel 2.2 system. They are paired up with two Hsu Research ULS-15 subwoofers and some electronics by Cambridge Audio. The PSB's actually sit atop the subs on 12" stands, bringing them up to ear-level at the seated listening position. The sound is natural, extended and authoritative. Compared to the PSB Image B5's, the B4's highs seem slightly rolled-off, less 'zingy'. However, this translates to less listener fatigue in my opinion. I know these mini-monitors are probably more designed for surround than for mains, but paired up with a quality subwoofer (or two), they make for a fine 1st-class two-channel system. Visually, they seem to disappear into the decor without bringing any attention to themselves whatsoever -- until they speak.

Pros: Pure, natural sound, with no exaggerated highs, mids or lows. Visually disappears into the decor. Gorgeous fit 'n' finish and build quality.

Cons: Slightly rolled-off extreme highs.

Good Little Speakers

James from Elizabeth City, NC on 5/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to be the main voice to a 2.1 home theater system. They are powered by a Teac AH01 integrated amplifier and are accompanied by a Polk PSW 404 10" sub. After listening to this system for about a month, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed. It is true that 4" speakers do not play very low frequencies, so I do not consider them as full range speakers and highly recommend using a subwoofer to provide the bass. It is also true that the tonal balance is spectacular. The Teac does not have any tone controls what so ever, and I still greatly appreciate the timbre whenever I listen to music or watch a movie. I highly recommend these speakers for anyone that is in the market for a physically understated audio system that manages to deliver quality sound reproduction.

Good, with some reservations

Joe from Connecticut on 1/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these for use in a 2.0 bookshelf setup. If that is what you are using them for, either get a sub in addition or get the Image B5s or the Imagine Minis. The bass from the B4s is limited by the design and size. Other than that, these are exceptionally clear and detailed, and have amazing timbre in the middle region. The treble is somewhat rolled off, so consider an amplifier with tone adjusment.

Pros: Size, clarity and detail, amazing mids

Cons: Bass is tight but lacking in the lower regions Treble is rolled off

Do yourself a favor and grab some PSB's

Mike Hunt from Ocracoke Island on 12/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They may be deemed small by some but definitely large sounding! They are the perfect size for my medium/large living room. They blend nicely into the decor and sit atop my piano under the flat screen. I did not want big bulky speakers but I definitely wanted a speaker that would impress friends and make a very enjoyable listening experience for all. THEY DO THIS WITH EASE! I am using them in a 2.1 system right now and they work great for music with the frequent cocktail parties I have at my house. Most of my friends are Bose fans but when they hear these speakers they realize the error of there ways. No comparison. PSB will be in every listening room in my house soon enough. Also I am going to get some out door speakers from PSB for my 3 decks around the house. Super Pleased!!! I am so glad I ran across a company that commits itself to true sound reproduction but makes it reasonably affordable for the audiophile on a budget. These make a great 5.1 set up with the Image C4 as center.

Pros: Large enough to accurately reproduce every detail. Small enough to blend in and keep the peace with my better half. Great 2.1, 3.1 or 5.1. Very solid design, build quality is very high and arrived quick from Crutchfield.

Cons: None. Buy these :)

PSB-4 your room

TomM from Issaquah, WA on 1/12/2012

I have them in my bedroom that is about 15'wide by 22' long. The sound fills up the room. You will need a sub woofer to take the 20 - 150 range, but the speakers cover the remainder of the range surprisingly well. I would recommend these for simple low cost speakers.

Pros: Good sound for a small speaker.

Cons: Could use a little more ummmph in them. I use a subwoofer that really fills in the low end and with that they are really good.

Excellent Sound For Their Size

BobS from Seattle, WA on 8/26/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Getting high quality sound over a wide frequency range from small speakers is a challenge. These speakers meet that challenge. They are small enough to satisfy even the most particular decorator, as well as being handsome. The sound imaging is very good. Other than a slight "boominess" sometimes noticeable in the middle bass notes of piano recordings, the frequency response sounds impressively even and natural. These speakers are excellent for most of the kinds of music I listen to - chamber , folk, jazz and swing - and adequate for large symphonic pieces.

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The woofers' magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness.
