Our take on the PSB Image C5

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look that's softened by slightly curved panels. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Clear dialogue and lifelike special effects

PSB's Image C5 center channel dishes out natural, dynamic sound that'll make it the star performer in your home theater speaker system. The Image line borrows driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family, as well as their top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

Advanced drivers for clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image C5 features a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. Its two long-excursion, high-output 5-1/4" woofers use the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps them deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with surprisingly deep bass. It all adds up to distinct movie dialogue and impact-rich special effects that'll draw you into the on-screen action.

Great center channel

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding center speaker. Living in a Brooklyn apartment I needed something able to be clear at lower volumes. Wasn't sure about space needed for the speaker and how it would look, but it blends very nicely with the grill on in the entertainment center.

Pros: Dialogue very clear even at lower volumes

Cons: Quite large

Great Speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great center channel speaker. Voices are very clear, important as we age. It is a little tall at about seven inches.

Pros: Really good sound. Reasonable price for the product you get.

Cons: A little taller than some others, but not by much.

A Wonderful Speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I now have three PSb image 5's, they cover the left and right channels and the center channel. The center channel speaker which contains two woofers and one tweeter is the speaker I just purchased. I am amazed at the build quality and heft of the speakers. The sound coming from these relatively small speakers is amazing. I first set the left and right channel speakers up in my primary home theatre system to test them out. I had actually purchased them for use in another location. I substituted the left and right PSB's for my Ohm H speakers working with two Golden Ear subwoofers (1,200 watts) a piece. The bass from the PSB's was quite smooth and natural. Taking the Golden ears out, the upper bass in my large room was nice and accurate. The midrange and high frequencies were wonderfully realistic. Voices were very natural. Guitars sounded clean and crisp. Violins accurate and not harsh. Male and Female opera voices had a very natural presence and created an accurate soundstage. In this test I did A/B comparisons and I also set the system up to use a PSB for one channel and an Ohm for the other. The amplifier is a Yamaha 3030. The three PSB's are now in service in another location and they sound extraordinary. I am using them with a 20 year old sony dolby surround sound receiver of less than 50 watts a channel along with a single 20 year old realistic subwoofer of 100 watts. With and without the subwoofer the sound is smooth and natural at all times.

Pros: Well built with quality materials. Smooth natural sound and accurate sound.

Cons: If you have a very large room and would like earth shattering bass, or want to hear accurate low bass sound effects for home theatre, you will need to use them with a subwoofer. But I don't really see this as a con.

Another 5 Star Review for this Center Channel

bj from Charlotte, NC on 7/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sounding center channel! It has a very full and rich sound. I'd like to classify myself as an audiophile on a budget. I originally purchased the PSB T6 floor-standing loudspeakers about a year ago. I had them paired up with a [capable, but underwhelming] Paradigm Cinema Studio 100 Center channel and 90 surrounds. That just didn't have nearly the same richness that this center (along with my S5's) currently produces. It is a larger center channel, so that is one thing to take note of if you're considering. For smaller room applications, you may want to consider the smaller C4 model (I said the same thing about the S4's in my other review). To be honest, the PSB setup is amazing though! I currently have the following setup [5.1], PSB T6 towers, PSB S5's for surrounds, PSB C5 for center and a Denon 4311ci. I couldn't be happier...although at some point I may consider adding some other speakers for a 7.1 system. I haven't decided yet though.

Pros: rich and dynamic sound, great finish

Cons: may be a little large for small room applications (but that is being really picky)

Great Center Channel

Jim from Central VA on 11/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this speaker set up in a 3.1 system with PSB T5 towers and powered by a Maramtz 5006. First, allow me to say that PSB speakers in general both look and sound wonderful. They have a simple stylish look coupled with a clarity of sound that literally has to be heard to be believed (especially at their price point). They have a natural clear sound that one can listen to all day long without experiencing fatigue. Even the more affordable T5 towers look beautiful and sound wonderful (I have left a review for them as well). The C5 center channel is no different. This speaker looks beautiful. Its simple yet stylish look should compliment any room. But more importantly, the C5 center does its job as a workhorse for both movies and television sound tracks. The clarity of dialogue allows you to become immersed in whatever you may be watching without missing anything that is said. This holds true whether the dialogue occurs during a thundering action scene or a soft quiet scene. The speaker does all this while still delivering a beautiful sound quality that is a pleasure. Rest assured it does music very very well. If you are looking for a great center channel at a nice price then I highly recommend this speaker. If you are looking for a great set of speakers I highly recommend you look at the the PSB brand.

Pros: Sound quality and Looks.

Cons: None

Great sounding center channel

GabeS from Iowa on 6/8/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The center channel of a 5.1 or 7.1 reproduces about 60% of a movie's sound, and about 80% of the dialogue. Because of this, it's considered the most important speaker of a surround system, as it has to be heard clearly over all the other speakers as well as the sub. That's why center channel speakers are usually the most expensive individual speaker in a surround system: they have a lot they need to do. The PSB C5 center channel does its job admirably. Every voice sounds completely natural, and sountracks sound extremely musical, especially for a center-channel. Its blend with my Image B5 bookshelf speakers is flawless. The best compliment that I can give the speaker is that I forget it's there. Instead of thinking about not being able to hear the dialogue in loud scenes, I'm completely engrossed in whatever movie I happen to be watching at the time. I've yet to hear a bad-sounding PSB speaker, they're one of the best speaker companies out there. This is just one more example of their excellence.

Pros: Extremely full-sounding. Produces dialogue effortlessly, while also sounding very musical when it needs to. It's a very pretty speaker as well.

Cons: Compared to the small Image B5 bookshelves, the C5 was much larger by comparison. Not a huge deal, but if you're looking for a smaller center-channel, look at the Image C4 instead. It's also somewhat expensive, but worth every penny.

Cone Design: The two woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. Each woofer's magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plug enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeter uses a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and woofers are crossed over at 1,800 Hz.

Binding Posts: The binding post input terminal will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Frequency Response:

  • On Axis @ 0°: 50-23,000 Hz (+/-3 dB)
