PSB is best known for their for their highly regarded speakers, which have a reputation for producing accurate, precise sound. Here at Crutchfield, we often use a set of PSB towers as reference speakers when testing out new home audio equipment. With the M4U 4 in-ear headphones, they've used a hybrid dual-driver technology called RoomFeel™ to re-create their stellar "listening room" experience in a compact, go-anywhere design.

Each earbud has a two-way crossover system and two types of drivers. A balanced armature driver delivers highs and mids with the kind of clarity worthy of PSB loudspeakers. At the same time, a dynamic driver produces bass so tight and deep, you can practically picture a pulsing woofer in front of you.

Find your fit and seal out sound leaks

So you can enjoy the M4U's natural sound comfortably, PSB includes six pairs of replaceable ear tips — three sizes of silicon gel tips and three sizes of Comply™ memory foam tips. The special foam tips are not only super-soft and breathable, but they also conform to your ear canal and create a tight seal. This helps stop ambient noise from making its way into your listening session, and keeps your music from leaking out.

Two detachable cables for listening at home or on the go

The PSB M4U 4 in-ear 'phones include two separate cables. There's a standard straight cable for listening at home or at your desk. When you're out and about, the other cable wraps around your ear, keeping the ear pieces sturdy and secure. This mobile cable also includes a three-button remote that gives you convenient iPhone® control. There's even a built-in mic for making and taking calls.

Disappointing

Christopher from Bradenton, FL on 3/30/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own PSB 5.1 speakers and they sound great in my media room. Excited to try these earbuds. Big let down. Sound was very "thin", not rich. My Bose Bluetooth SoundSport sound much better/richer- big surprise there as I just use those for jogging and workouts. Assumed PSB brand and having wired connection would equal great sound. Also, the foam ear pads were prone to being mis-shaped just from storing earbuds in case. Not sure I understand the foam pad concept versus silicone which seem better. Kudos to Crutchfield for easy return. Glad I tried these risk free, but they were not for me. I'm still a big fan of PSB home speakers.

Pros: - Seemed well made.

Cons: - Thin sound quality. - Foam ear pads (use the silicone ones)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a little disappointed based on my experience with PSB speakers in the past. These buds sound somewhat flat with little imaging. This may be due to poor fit as the sound is markedly improved with mild pressure applied externally. I've tried several but not all of the supplied ear pieces. I will update if this corrects

A Basshead's Perspective

Jacob from Oklahoma on 1/16/2018

I'm going to be honest--I really like these headphones. I love their exceptional clarity and build quality, but they have one glaring issue that is preventing the five star rating: They aren't sensitive enough for a normal headphone jack. I'm sure they would be nice if I had a headphone amp, but with a jack with normal power 100% just isn't enough sound, especially bass. You can take this review with a grain of salt--I find a 12" JL Audio sub running off 260 watts RMS with the bass boost ON to be enough bass to be "adequate." Overall, EXCELLENT CLARITY, don't get me wrong--they just don't have enough thump for my taste.

Fantastic sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worth the investment so long as you power them with a some kind of amp.  They have tremendously good sound, but come alive with ample power.  Fit : fit is very good.  Easy to get a nice seal. Sound : very large sound stage, very concise all around.  If given clean source material, these sound as good, if not better than others costing three times the price.  I am very happy with mine.  They are well built, and the sound is truly fantastic. They also stay put very well, well enough that I can mountain bike with them. The seal is good enough that they are almost noise cancelling.

Pros: Fantastic sound. Well made. Comfortable.

Cons: Kind of power hungry. They are no good with my laptop or desktop without an amp. Otherwise, they are great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Big fan of these headphones. Did a lot of research and like most people, I was trying to decide between these and a pair of Shure's. It took me a few wears to get used to the feel of the PSB headphones but now I love them. They fit in securely and rarely if ever come out, unlike the last pair that I owned. The sound quality is amazing, allowing me to truly hear each instrument clearly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent in ear monitors. Got them for a noisy office environment (new open office concept). Sound amazing. The RoomFeel technology really works. The foam tips are extremely comfortable (wear them 6 hours per day) and block out almost all of the sound. No need to turn up the music loud to overcome the noise, so you're actually saving your hearing.

Pros: Excellent sound, comfortable. Worth every penny so I won't yell at my noisy coworkers and get fired.

Cons: Expensive. May not be worth it for some.

Do I Have Small Ears?

johnw from Durango, CO on 4/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like these head phones. They feel well built. The cord is sturdy, and I love the clip included - a thoughtful touch. Ditto with the carrying case. I got them primarily for airplane travel, because I was tired of devoting precious briefcase room to my over-the-ear headphones. All that is good. So here is the problem I have. I really, truly have to jam the larger, foam tips into my ears to get the most from the sound. When I can do that, the sound is truly remarkable - clear, with deep base notes, and nice suppression of ambient noise. But the foam tips don't want to stay seated. With any movement at all, including just talking on the phone - another reason I like headphones - they start to work their way out. That's the only reason I marked the sound quality down one star. With the smaller, silicon gel tips the fit is much better for me but, in my opinion, the sound quality is degraded significantly - just not as rich. All that said, if I'm not too active - with the big foam tips inserted - these are very comfortable for long periods, and the sound is truly enjoyable.

Pros: - Remarkably good sound with foam tips. Clear treble, deep and clear base notes. - Comfortable. - Sturdy cord. - Good iPhone controls, and mic is close to mouth for good outgoing sound.

Cons: - Foam tips don't want to stay seated. - Sound quality with silicon gel tips not as good. - Not crazy about the around-the-ear setup for the cord.

Very nice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using these in a noisy car environment with a IPhone 5s alone and then a OPPO Ha-2 Dac/amp with mostly M4a Apple lossless through I tunes. The treble and mids are bright, clear, and transparent. Cymbals are real sounding, not like a snake hiss. The midrange is forward but not to much. The Bass is low and tight. I compared these IEM,s to my Sennheiser Momentum over the ear's in a quiet room. They are almost identical. The Momentums obviously have a little deeper/clearer bass but not by much. These blow away the Grado se10. because of more bass accuracy and oomph in the bass.

Pros: Very balanced sound, quality cables. inside the ear fit, with many options

Cons: The only con is more of a personal preference. the cable wraps around the top of the ear. They are however, light and stay out of the way.

Features

Overview: The PSB M4U 4 high definition in-ear monitors are part of the Music for You (M4U) series of high performance headphones. The M4U 4s come with two detachable cables, cable management clip, airline and 1/4" adapters, 6 pairs of ear tips, and a semi-hard zippered storage case.

Hybrid Dual Drivers: The M4U 4 in-ear monitors feature a unique two-way Hybrid Dual-Driver design with a moving coil dynamic driver to handle the low frequencies and a low-mass balanced armature driver for the highs. A precision crossover network controls the frequencies, routing them to the appropriate drivers. The drivers and crossover are housed in a multi-chamber, vented ABS enclosure. This two-way design helps implement PSB's innovative RoomFeel technology, making the headphones sound as true-to-nature as a pair of loudspeakers in a typical listening room.

Ear Tips: The M4U 4 comes with a two types of ear tips, each in small, medium, and large sizes. The Comply Foam Tx-200 ear tips are made of soft, high-tech memory foam. The body heat-sensitive tips can be compressed to fit into your ear canal and expand to form an air-tight seal. This passive noise reduction seals out unwanted ambient noise and enhances the bass response. An integrated wax guard keeps ear wax from entering the sound port, which diminishes the sound quality. Also included are three pairs of silicon gel ear tips.

Cables: The M4U 4 includes two interchangeable, tangle-free cables. One cable (55" in length) has an in-line remote and microphone with a call answer button, microphone, and music playback controls for iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The other cable (48") has no remote or microphone. The package include a snap-on 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter, airline adapter, and a cable management clip.

Compatibility: The remote and mic are supported by iPhone (3G through 6 Plus), iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad (2nd through 4th generation), iPad mini (1st through 3rd generation), iPod touch (2nd through 5th generation), iPod nano (4th through 7th generation, and iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation)

Why did you buy this?

Wanted in-ear. Read extensive reviews both on Crutchfield and several external sites. Although not noise cancelling, these seemed to have the best combination of build quality, sound quality, and isolation via good fit. [ JOHN V  Mar 11, 2016 ]
