Our take on the PSB Synchrony One C

Enjoy clear dialogue from this exceptional home theater performer

When you're creating a high-impact home theater system, the last thing you want is for your center channel speaker to fall down on the job. PSB's powerful Synchrony One C delivers clear, detailed center channel sound with all your favorite movies, TV shows, and video games — a perfect tonal match for PSB's Synchrony floor-standing speakers. Your eyes will appreciate this speaker's simple, sophisticated looks, and your ears will appreciate PSB's precise driver design.

Synchrony family

PSB's Synchrony speaker family (Synchrony One C shown center back)

Great sound begins with quality driver materials

The Synchrony One C features a three-way design with the same drivers as PSB's flagship Synchrony One floor-standing speaker, but in a dual-woofer, horizontal configuration. The 1" titanium dome tweeter is carefully crafted to produce smooth, accurate highs free from distortion and grain. The midrange and woofer cones are made of fine-weave fiberglass, which creates stiff, self-damping cones. You'll hear exceptionally clean mids with excellent detail and tonal accuracy, plus impressive bass response. Extra-large voice coils and virtually distortion-free motor structures help preserve clarity and detail. Plus the rigid, cast aluminum baskets are magnetically inert for maximum efficiency.

The woofers use lightweight, rigid fine-weave fiberglass cones for exceptionally smooth response.

The tweeter uses a high-flux neodymium magnet to maintain clear, accurate highs, even during dynamic peaks like explosions or cymbal crashes.

Top-notch crossover ensures optimal sound dispersion

PSB's years of design experience and tireless testing at the National Research Council in Canada have led to a superior crossover design. The high-quality components are carefully picked to create the fourth-order crossovers that go into Synchrony speakers. Meticulous engineering ensures minimal driver overlap, with precisely chosen crossover points to maintain proper dispersion. The result is a smooth frequency response over a wide "sweet-spot."

A solid cabinet with a luxurious, real-wood veneer finish

Cabinet cutaway

Extruded aluminum front and back panels hold the curved, seven-layered top and bottom panels in place, creating an incredibly rigid, acoustically inert cabinet.

The Synchrony One C's heavy, rigid cabinet helps eliminate vibrations to maintain the speaker's natural sound. The double-walled aluminum front and back cabinet surfaces hold the curved side panels in place. Each side panel is constructed using seven layers of MDF, each one individually laminated to improve the panel's stiffness and absorb sonic energy that might otherwise color the sound. The top and side panels are clad in real wood veneer that's hand selected for its beauty and quality.

I did a direct comparison with the Synchrony 2 center channel and while they were fairly close in sound the Ones have a richer bass and fuller sound. If you are limited in budget or space the 2s are great but the Ones have an edge well worth the extra money

Incredible Center Channel

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We replaced our old center channel speaker with the Synchrony One C and were completely blown away. In reviewing a number of our reference Blu Ray discs, we heard a number of things we had not heard before or sounded much more interesting. The sense of space, tone quality, and dimensionality were outstanding and blended perfectly with our main L and R monitors. We tried them with PSB Synchrony Ones, Synchrony Twos, and Synchrony One Bs and in all circumstances this center channel was a perfect fit. Listening to movies and 5.1 music, we were really impressed with tight and solid low frequency response and impact this speaker had. We were hesitant that it might not be worth the added expense, but five minutes in we were looking at each other amazed.

Pros: Outstanding Sound Quality Very Well Built

Cons: Expensive

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are as good as speakers several times their price. This review says it all: In my own words, once they broke in (I was disappointed with their performance straight out of the box but speakers of this caliber require some conditioning before they attain their brilliance) they became majestic. Their accuracy and sound-staging is unparalleled in their price range. Buy these speakers.

Pros: Awesome sound-staging with no coloration.

Cons: There are no cons to these speakers.

Driver Technology

Cone Design: The midrange and woofer cones are a laminated sandwich design; each has a fine weave fiberglass layer along with a compressed, felted natural fiber laminate. The result is a rigid cone with added damping properties. The central dustcap offers a second connection to the voice coil to improve bass and midrange control. The inherent distortion resulting from the magnetic field generated by the input signal reacting with the field in the magnetic structure's air gap and the self-induction and impedance that varies with cone movement are addressed using an aluminum shorting ring within the magnet structure, an aluminum phase plug on the pole piece, and a shorted copper turn on top of the pole piece. The aluminum phase plug also mechanically smoothes the response and acts as a heat sink for the voice coil, reducing power compression. The drivers use cast aluminum baskets and rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium, Ferrofluid cooled dome tweeter has a neodymium motor structure and an aluminum heat sink. The mass (low) and stiffness (high) are optimized for the required wide frequency response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 3-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. Tight tolerances were used when choosing the crossover components; heavy multi-laminated iron cores are used for large value inductors, high gauge wire air core inductors are used for medium and small values, all the capacitors are low loss and film capacitors are used for the midrange and treble frequencies.

Enclosure Design

Cabinet: The cabinet is an integral part of speaker design and has a dramatic effect on the overall sound of a speaker. PSB uses a combination of aluminum and wood in the Synchrony One C's construction. The front baffle and rear panel are made of double wall aluminum extrusions. The aluminum panels are very rigid and precisely machined with contours to preserve the sonic characteristics of the drivers. The top and bottom panels are seven layers of 3mm MDF, curved for added stiffness, with a wood veneer exterior. While rigid, MDF also has inherent damping properties to absorb energy that might otherwise color the music.

Dual Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the back of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by gold-plated jumpers. With the jumpers removed the Synchrony One C can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Frequency Response:

  • On Axis @ 0°: 50-23,000 Hz (+/-3 dB)
  • On Axis @ 0°: 50-20,000 Hz (+/-1.5 dB)
  • Off Axis @ 30°: 50-10,000 Hz (+/-1.5 dB)
  • Low Frequency Cutoff -10 dB: 40 Hz

  • Anechoic Chamber: 88 dB
  • Typical Listening Room: 90 dB
