Our take on the Joby Gorillapod Micro 800

It's tiny enough to slip in a purse or pocket, but versatile enough to provide a stable mount for a decent-sized hybrid interchangeable-lens camera in almost any situation. The Gorillapod Micro 800 deserves a spot in any hobbyist's camera case, and because it tucks neatly under the camera's body when collapsed, it fits nicely in most all of them. A stable mount means you can get those low light shots, group shots with everyone in the picture, and dramatic time-lapse videos that will have everyone asking, "How'd you do that?"

Hands-on research

Product Research

Overview: The GorillaPod Micro 800 by Joby is a compact tripod, designed for use with compact system (hybrid) cameras up to 28.2 ounces. It attaches to the camera via a standard 1/4" tripod thread. Because of its size, it can be left attached to the camera at all times, and opened when needed.

Zinc Alloy Legs: The GorillaPod Micro 800's legs are made of strong coated zinc alloy. They rotate into place and provide a base that is approximately 4-3/4" in diameter and 1" high. The rubberized foot grips provide enhanced stability on difficult terrain.

Camera Mount: The GorillaPod Micro 800 has an integrated machined aluminum positioning ball with a standard 1/4" thread. The mount gives you approximately 36° of movement in any direction.

When a tripod's too much

Elegantly simple. The Micro 800 looks like a fat flash drive with a screw on one end when it's folded up for travel. But then you fan out the legs (which lock into place), and you have a compact and very stable triangular stand. Rubber grips and beveled edges ensure the legs fit flat on the table, and the screw mount for your camera can swivel on its ball joint, so you can set your camera angle.

I can see a lot of uses for this device — everything from placing it on a deck rail and setting the camera to automatic so everyone can get in the shot, to doing closeup product shots for eBay. Basically, if you need the camera stable, and a traditional tripod would just get in the way, the Micro 800 might be for you.
