Overview

Our take on the Oppo UDP-203

The Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player is a pretty big deal. Our TV customers often ask us where to find 4K content to really show off their new Ultra HD screen. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the highest-quality video source available now and should be for the forseeable future. We've been eagerly awaiting the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player from Oppo — probably the most well-respected Blu-ray player manufacturer today.

Oppo UDP-203

A look under the hood reveals a sturdy, isolated disc drive and powerful video and audio processing.

Oppo's first 4K Blu-ray player

The Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player is a pretty big deal. Our TV customers often ask us where to find 4K content to really show off their new Ultra HD screen. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the highest-quality video source available now and should be for the forseeable future. We've been eagerly awaiting the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player from Oppo — probably the most well-respected Blu-ray player manufacturer today.

If you're not familiar with Oppo, their players are designed to squeeze every bit of video and audio detail from your movies and music. (We use an Oppo Blu-ray player here at Crutchfield HQ — in our training room, where all the top electronics companies demo their latest and greatest gear.) This high-performance player combines Oppo's time-tested build quality and versatility with cutting-edge 4K video.

Powerfully built from high-grade materials

Like all Oppo components, the UDP-203 is rock-solid. The disc drive itself is extra-sturdy, and utilizes an optimized laser to reduce movie load time. It's surrounded by an all-metal frame that is covered by a steel top panel and brushed aluminum front panel. This creates a heavy-duty foundation that lowers resonance and allows discs to spin smoothly and briskly.

This 9.5-pound 4K player looks and feels the part of a high-end component.

Perhaps the best 4K video processor available

But where the UDP-203 really shines next to your top A/V gear is with its internal wizardry. Oppo uses an advanced, customized quad-core 4K video decoder/processor. You'll be able to take full advantage of all the 3840 x 2160 pixels offered by 4K Blu-ray, along with the extended color range that makes the best 4K images look so rich and gorgeous. There's also a higher level of fine-tuning and tweaking available than with other 4K players, so you have full control over the picture on your screen.

And guess what? That special image processor can also make standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs look much better, too. There's even a 4K-ready HDMI input for your Apple® TV, Roku Premiere, or cable/satellite box.

Ready for current and future HDR standards

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range) offer the best picture available today. HDR allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image. It's incredibly striking.

Now, not all 4K Blu-ray movies offer HDR, but the Oppo UDP-203 is ready for any that do. The player not only supports the required HDR 10 format, but will also support the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format. This dynamic system can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis.

Back of Oppo UDP-203

The Oppo UDP-203 offers a plethora of connections, including 7.1-channel RCA audio outputs.

Riveting movie sound and high-resolution music

Oppo players are famous for their top-flight sound, and true to the company's name, the UDP-203 brings it. The audio capabilities rival the quality of the video processing. Plus there are outputs galore — both digital and analog — for connecting to a receiver, preamp, or amplifier. Oppo also supports all the latest Dolby and DTS surround sound formats for movies (including Atmos and DTS:X when connected to a receiver via HDMI).

For music, you can play CDs or SACDs, connect a hard drive or thumb drive to one of three USB ports, or play tunes from a networked computer or music server. High-resolution downloads should sound pristine (the player can handle FLAC, ALAC, DSD files, and more). But even lesser-quality music files will enjoy a boost from the powerful built-in 8-channel DAC. It's why this workhorse of a player belongs in a high-end music setup as much as a top-of-the-line home theater.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the UDP-203 for almost a year, and it is a fantastic player. I use it for regular blu-rays, 4K UHD blu-rays, and DVDs. It makes DVDs and regular blu-rays look so much better than my PS3 did, and when I got my 2017 LG OLED B7, 4K UHD blu-rays became a whole new level of visual pleasure. One issue that I had was occasionally audio would not play through my Denon AVR-X1300W when playing a disc. Turning the UDP-203 off and back on after ten seconds or so fixed the issue when it would happen. Eventually, I came across a suggestion online that the UDP-203 needed to be last in the order for powering up the tv, receiver, and player when using a Harmony remote to start an activity. I have the Harmony 650, so I edited the power on sequence settings for my movie watching activities and haven't had that "no audio" problem since making that change. I am 100% pleased with the UDP-203.

Pros: Really improves DVD quality. Very quiet when playing.

Cons: No HDCD support.

Hoping for more musical revelations

Art from Key Biscayne, FL on 5/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This disc player is a tank, with a superbly designed disc tray. The remote is also well thought out, and love that illumination. I purchased this player mainly for 2 channel stereo playback. The TV setup is extraordinarly complex if you're just using the player for music, though it is well thought out, and somewhat intuitive if you've used remotes before. I've been using a 10 year old JVC DVD player I purchased for about $135. I was really looking forward to hearing deeper into the tracks, but upon doing a direct A/ B comparison simultaneously with identical discs, I found no new music to be forthcoming. The sound on the OPPO seemed to be emerging from an ever so slightly quieter background, but somehow the overall sound of the band was lacking, or less intense, with no new revelations to show for the trade off. Needless to say I'm dissapointed. I'll listen to few more discs, but I have a feeling someone else who has a 4 k TV will be using this player if it goes back to Crutchfield. Great service from staff, website, tracking, and fast delivery. I've purchased a Yamaha stereo amp, and infinity speakers from Crutchfield, and very happy with the overall experience.

Pros: Solid Build, solid loading tray for discs

Cons: Excessively complicated set up for music only playback. Didn't hear any new music on my system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had the UDP-203 a couple of weeks. So far, I've played some Blu-Ray concerts, CD's, and a couple of recently acquired SACD's. I was blown away by the audio quality of the SACD's. I also am very impressed with the build quality of the player. It's a shame Oppo has bid farewell. Additionally, the IOS app works great, allowing me to enjoy CD's or SACD's without the need for my plasma TV to be running just to view content and make playing selections. I look forward to the day when I upgrade my TV to 4K UHD, so I can enjoy such discs on my Oppo. Hopefully, those discs will still be in production. While I regularly stream HD movies via Apple TV, they do not compare to a Blu-Ray disc. As usual, Crutchfield was a great buying experience.

Pros: Great build quality Fantastic sound from SACD's

Cons: None

Build quality way beyond the typical players from other manufactures, stunning picture color and perfect sound reproduction! It's too bad Oppo is ending their BluRay player production! They truly were the best on the market!

Pros: Great picture, great sound.

Cons: Exspensive, going out of production.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been looking at the Oppo UDP-203 for almost a year while waiting for the nascent 4K Blu-ray players market to develop/evolve. As mainstream manufacturers entered and prices dropped I thought I would buy an inexpensive player to try out and wait to invest in the Oppo later this year. Stunned by the news of Oppo shutting down, I panicked when I went to Crutchfield's site and saw the backorder status and limited supply notices. I placed an order with Crutchfield and this turned out to be the best experience I have had with any on-line purchase. Excellent notice & communications regarding backorder status, product availability, order processing, double-boxing the Oppo, & free UPS 2-DAY shipping! I received a pristine, clean, and undamaged package from Crutchfield which really makes you feel confident no "nasty surprises" will be found inside. Removing/opening the Oppo box elevated the experience to another level. From the packing materials (no plastic bags, the Oppo is "wrapped" in a canvas reusable shopping bag!) to the player itself, everything exudes high quality and attention to detail. The comprehensive PRINTED manual details every feature and setting for the player. Although the Oppo has many features and user adjustability, initial set-up is easy. Attach the power cord, HDMI cable, and turn it on. With the default settings the player works right out of the box. Set-up WiFi and the player will update to latest firmware version. My first Oppo; sad to see

Pros: Easy setup; Plays all my optical media; Zoom control - 8 modes; Pure audio mode; features and settings all adjustable for tweaking your setup; High Quality; Design/attention to detail; Crutchfield service;

Cons: None; Sad to see Oppo cease manufacturing AV products; Potential for reduced software upgrades/product support?

Best player I've ever owned. Makes all DVD and Blu-ray Discs look better than older machines and the build quality is fantastic. Of course the 4K discs look beautiful as well. Glad I bought two while I could!! Always had the best luck with Oppo products.

Pros: Beautiful picture and built like a tank!! Almost tempted to buy one as a spare!!!

Cons: Oppo is quitting making spinning disc machines so limited availability. Not sure if anyone else makes anything close for this price!

Amazing 4K Blu Ray player! I bought and return three Sony 800 players thinking maybe it was a shipment issue but to no avail. Back to the store. This player outperforms any other player in or below its class! This beast also does very well with Dolby vision and Dolby atmos. With Oppo stopping production on this beautiful piece of equipment get one while you can.

Pros: Strong design and build quality. Excellent performance in picture and sound. Top notch!

Cons: Nothing! Other than oppo is no longer making them. Everyone should have one.

I have been contemplating this purchase for a while, but wasn't in a huge rush since I need to upgrade my TV and receiver. Then...Oppo decides to end production. I pulled the trigger immediately. While I can't test the UltraHD features yet, the device is (obviously) superior to my 7 year old BluRay player. I found I can stream local videos with better performance compared to my Roku, though some mpeg files are not supported. From the packaging quality to the overall build, this is an awesome device.

Pros: Top tier device. No regrets pulling the trigger immediately.

Cons: Good Luck finding them, having been discontinued.

Mark from Medley, FL on 4/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. I have it connected via HDMI to a LG Oled C7 & Marantz receiver for home theater and through Optical to a Peachtree Nova 150 for music. I just made the connections and the Oppo did the rest requiring no configuration on my part. I tested 4K UHD playback using Planet Earth 2 and both the video and audio are breathtaking. I threw in a CD for music playback testing through the Peachtree and my Kef LS50s, the results were stunning. I went through CD after CD and had to call in sick for work the next day but it was totally worth it! Oppo is getting out of the disk player business so grab your UPD203 or 205 while you can. Crutchfield's customer service was excellent.

Pros: Plays everything I throw at it and simplified a somewhat complex configuration.

Cons: None so far.

My first Oppo Player and am very happy with the overall quality and great playback of all of the optical disc formats. I have many 5.1 audio discs (DVD-Audio, SACD & Blu-ray Audio) as well as the video formats and am glad that I can still play and enjoy my collection. Have been waiting years to buy an Oppo so made the leap before they were sold out, glad that I did because it looks like they are now sold out at Crutchfield. A great universal machine. Sorry that Oppo is getting out of the optical disc player business and hope that they continue to support firmware updates for the Blu-ray format. /s/ CSV

OPPO BD (Media) player

Dan from San Leandro, CA on 4/16/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player is the answer to my audio video problems. It replaces my Western Digital media player. It plays more video formats than the WD. The remote is easier to use than the WD. The sound produced by the OPPO is fantastic when playing all media sources. Setup was easier than I expected. I rack mounted my OPPO and it looks great. My only question is why there is two USB 3.0 outlets on the back and one USB 2.0 on the front. I think one of the 3.0's should have been on the front since that's the only one I use although I can't see any difference between the 3.0 and 2.0. The 2.0 plays all media I have thrown at it without any lag time. All in all a great player.

Pros: Great sound. Great looking. Great disc playback. Play's all media from my USB drives.

Cons: Could have made the USB outlet on the front 3.0 rather than 2.0

I had anticipated I could run this player through a Denon AVR-X2400H. however my limited experience could only run it from the unit to the TV. I lose an awful lot of capability, beginning with the array of speakers I have,

Pros: Quality picture and easy of set up is all you want to hook up to TV

Cons: Cannot run the unit through my Denon AVR-X2400H The apps needed seem a nice touch but one more step in the installation. It is not the easiest unit to hook up and many of the functions will require considerable effort to unlock. Example is a CD player and the app to stream songs to the unit, In time, you can master its capabilities if you have a lot of free time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As of this writing, between Amazon and Crutchfield, there are over 600 reviews of the Oppo UDP-203. Almost all of them are five stars. Rather than repeat the many accolades of the Oppo, I would like to write about my reasons for the purchase and mention a couple of unusual features of the unit. Because I have a Plasma TV, I was looking for a player with a screen saver (good to have for OLED TV , too). My initial purchased of the Sony UBP x800 proved not to have one, thus I returned the Sony, bit the bullet, and bought the Oppo. The Oppo does have a screen saver in a unique fashion. It will kick in after three minutes if there is no activity on the screen. Thus, a pause during a movie would constitute "no activity", but playing a CD with the progress line running does not fit the definition of "no activity." That image would stay on the screen until the CD was removed or the pause button was press and three minutes had elapsed. But Oppo has a unique fix for that. The remote has a button named "Pure Audio." It has the Oppo "P" on it. When pressed, it creates a black screen without affecting the audio. Pressing it again, instantly brings back the CD play screen, thus a screen saver without the floating logo. Also, during CD play, the album art is shown, plus the tract title and number along with the progress and length of the track. A unique feature as far as I know. If you're looking for reviews of the 4k quality of the Oppo, check out the

Pros: Tons of features. Ability for many fine adjustments Build Packaging Best instruction manual in the business

Cons: Cost Giant remote (but easy to see)

No NETFLIX No Youtube NO SALE

Anonymous from Marriottsville, MD on 4/11/2018

At time of writing the overwhelming majority of reviews are 5 star, to which I think owners must have written the reviews before the actual product arrived. I made the same judgement, and am now returning both the UDP-203 and UDP-205 that I just bought. Why? No Netflix and no Youtube! Netflix was added to the Oppo lineup many years ago, and one is likely to assume all Oppos support Netflix. NOT ANYMORE! This product and its upgraded sibling have all the Netflix and Youtube capabilities of a 2002 Sony (meaning: NONE!). If you want Netflix or you want Youtube, keep looking because Oppo now supports neither. Super disappointment and bad biz decision on the part of Oppo. Top notch to boat anchor in one release. Hooray!

Emanuel from MASSACHUSETTS on 4/10/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Last year, I had updated to an LG oled55c6p 4k TV (a fantastic TV) and had been looking at an upgrade bluray player to support 4k UHD and complete my home cinema package. For a number of years I have read the reviews on Oppo DVD players and they mostly were highly rated for quality in product and detail. While it was out of my budget range at the time I decided to make it a goal to one day own an Oppo when the opportunity arose. I will admit to looking into alternatives for 4k bluray, but when I came across the latest product release from Oppo I decided to once again look deeper into the new UDP 203. The owner and professional reviews were very highly rated with glowing praise again for build quality and exceptional picture quality. At the time I had recently read a review in Sound and Vision from last year and they had rated it a top pick. Prior to my decision on the Oppo, I decided to call Crutchfield and Manny my advisor was very helpful and answered the questions I had concerning connectivity to my legacy home theater system. The one really great feature that the Oppo offers is the ability to run the 4k portion of the video to your 4k HDTV and also a separate hdmi output for Audio to the receiver which sync's perfectly with the video. For me that problem was solved. After some further conversation with Manny (who was exceptionally helpful) I decided to go ahead and he handled everything from order to shipment . Very satisfied with my Oppo and Crutchfield.

Pros: Supports multiple formats along with HDR and Dolby Vision. Excellent up convert of older DVD's and lightening fast loading speeds. Excellent remote

Cons: Honestly, none I can come up with

Going on two weeks now, so far so good, I'm running my Fire TV through the hdmi input and right away I heard vast improvement in my music quality. My OPPO paired well with my 11.2 Pioneer Elite Receiver and my LG SUHD TV, also it totally blew away my Samsung SUHD player on all movie formats. even DVDs look great when I used all the picture adjustments and Blurays of course. I highly recommend this product to anyone who loves high quality picture and sound. Hope this is helpful to anyone who might be considering this player. Good Luck, Ed.

Pros: Player has a nice High Quality professional look sound and picture quality is superb lots of fine adjustment options

Cons: only one HDMI Input

Amazing Blu-ray player. Did a lot of research before going with Oppo. I heard they aren't making any more players. Hopefully they will still support it.

Pros: Separate audio hdmi out to bypass HDCP for 4K. Great picture quality.

Cons: Wish it would read my iPod. Heard they just stopped making components...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Built like a tank, one of the best Blu ray players on the market today, Up scaling is perfect and plays all my formats. I use this player mainly for Concerts and the picture and sound is great. This is a high end player and works very well when used in a highend audo setup. I use Tube amps and Ultra HD 4K this takes the palyer to its sweet spot.

Pros: The remote is great. Playback media is perfect.

Cons: Other Blu-ray players are starting to catch up with the Oppo's technology and cost less. If you want to save some money look at the Sony UBP-X800 its a very good player as well.

Have to order on end of March 2018 from Crutchfifld to replace my Pioneer blu-ray player. The OPPO UDP-203 has solid build quality, incredible picture on my LG OLED55C7P TV. The OPPO UDP-203 supports both the HDR 10 and Dolby Vision HDR formats provides incredibly sharp pictures from standard HD blu-ray dices, the audio sound quality is also great and the OPPO remote is great with real backlighting on the keys for easy to operate at the dark room.

Excellent Blu-Ray player which turns out to have more features than I actually realized when I bought it. With the phone app, it is very easy to share photos and more from your smartphone. I'm just glad I got this while it is still available as Oppo has announced it is not longer going to produce consumer audio/video products after later this year.

Pros: Best player available

Cons: Oppo is soon to exit the market

I bought this to replace my Oppo BDP-83SE for the 4K support. I actually like that there are no built-in apps because I'm streaming with my Roku and PS4 anyways. There's nothing like the high resolution audio on the UHD Blu-Rays and uncompressed 4K video. ATMOS mixes sound amazing. Love this player!

The only reason I give the OPPO 203 4 stars is because it lives up to my expectations and performs as advertised from a company known for quality. I'm holding on to a star in the event OPPO will come out with something that has better picture quality and totally surprise me. Read the reviews, watch the tech folks talk about this unit. It is all true! Everything looks better passing through the OPPO UDP-203. Call Crutchfield and hope they have some left. Nuf said!

Great product with significant shortcomings

Mukesh from Milpitas, CA on 4/4/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to give five stars but this product has significant shortcomings. I bought the OPPO player mainly for its error recovery features. I have an older Panasonic blu-ray player which does an excellent job but if the blu-ray or dvd disc has some bad tracks, it usually stops playing. I had one such blu-ray disc and the OPPO player simply paused at the bad tracks but continued and I could watch the entire movie. The OPPO has problems working with my TV. I have a 2015 year LG OLED TV and it has a feature SIMPLINK. If this feature is turned on and the player is connected via HDMI, the TV is supposed to turn on automatically when the player is turned on and the player turns off if the TV is turned off. This does not happen with the OPPO even though my TV correctly recognizes the player. I reported this to OPPO support and they suggested to set HDMI CEC to ON using the OPPO settings. Doing this did not help and resulted in another problem: I could not select the soundbar on my TV and had to use the internal TV speakers. So now I am forced to set HDMI CEC to OFF and manually turn on/off the TV each time I use the OPPO. Another really irritating problem I discovered was that every couple of weeks the remote of the OPPO stops working and I have to sync it again with the player by following the instructions in the manual. My old Panasonic player does not have any of these problems. I expected the much more expensive OPPO player to work effortlessly.

Pros: Excellent error recovery

Cons: Has problems working seamlessly with my TV; problems with remote

Excellent Quality, Very Reliable

Kevin from Poway, CA on 4/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, my OPPO UDP-203 has performed flawlessly hooked up to my LG OLED55E7P. You can barley hear the player, during quiet scenes of a movie. Overall, the OPPO player is impressive, the unit has very good upscalling and picture quality. I like the fact that you can hold down the information button on the remote for about three seconds and get all the information off the disc itself and then what the player is actually outputting. The OPPO UDP-203 is not the most expensive player on the market today, but is the best bang for the buck with all the Audio and Video options you get. For all of you out there thinking about pulling the trigger, you get a two year warranty and if you decide to sell the unit down the line, the OPPO UDP-203, will have one of the best resell values, period. Go look online and see what a used OPPO sells for.

Pros: Build Quality, Audio, Video and Reliability.

Out with the old, in with the New Oppo

Mike from Orlando, FL on 4/1/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Times have changed and so has your favorite DVD playing equipment. My Sony DVP-NS90V DVD player stopped working and I was looking for a replacement unit with HDMI and Dolby 5.1 capability. I have a Sony STR-DE345 amplifier surround unit with Dolby 5.1 audio which works just fine. My search for a new DVD player with Dolby 5.1 capability was not successful with many of the newer units offering limited connection options or dedicated connections for newer components. I then decided to try Crutchfield and see if I could find something that would fit my needs. I opened a chat with Kat, one of the Crutchfield Advisors, and she was very understanding of my situation and what I was looking for. Her first option was the Oppo UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player which had all the connections that I needed and others for more advanced connections. I had to think long and hard before going with the Oppo and I thought to price out a new surround system with DVD player as an alternative. This led to more expensive options and to more doubts about product quality in unknown brands. I decided to visit the Oppo website directly and see what they had to say about their unit. Once I saw all the features and the quality of design and construction, I decided that I would go for the Oppo which drew good reviews. I am impressed with the video and sound quality of the Oppo unit.

Pros: The new standard in home theater, Advanced image processing technology, Advanced audio processing, Custom-Made 4K loader, 4K UHD Blu-ray and Media Playback, HDR and HDR to SDR Conversion, Dolby Vision, Lossless High-resolution Audio, Support for the Latest Surround Formats, 7.1-Channel Analog Output, High Quality Metal Construction, Easily Integrated into a Home Theater System, High Resolution User Interface, Diversified Media Support

Cons: Price will make most buyers balk at this unit.

DO NOT DL NEW FIRMWARE!!

Joseph from Leesburg, VA on 3/27/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great player. The 4k processor is one of the best I've ever seen and the chassis is very high quality. You are definitely getting a time piece when it comes to presentation and over quality. The only reason I did not give it five stars is due to the latest firmware Oppo issued in March of 2018 that causes AV lip sync issues with all streaming content (Nividia Shield, Roku----Vudu, Netflix, etc). When you use the Oppo to stream video through its HDMI port the streaming content has MAJOR voice delays and can't be fixed. I called Oppo and they said they just became aware of the issue but said it would take a long time before they could test the Oppo against all streaming devices to fix. You can't rollback the firmware either, so the only way to avoid this is not to update the firmware when you receive it. This is definitely a show stopper. It's unfortunate though because the Oppo processes 4K streaming content flawlessly as far as the video quality is concerned.

Pros: Excellent 4K quality Excellent Sound 4K processor the best I've ever seen--Better than the Panni UB900 High quality chassis and packaging

Cons: March 2018 Firmware release will cause major voice delay issues with streaming content.

Hype Worthy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first Oppo is a 4K HDR player - YEAH! Love the picture quality and yes, it's worthy of the hype and the cost. Upscaling is very good, even on older garden variety DVDs. Blu ray DVDs are beautiful. 4K HDR DVDs are other-worldly. The remote control itself is heavier and built more solid than my last Blu-ray player. My only regret is that I waited so long to buy an Oppo. If you're after a premium home theatre and music player, look no further.

Perfection is possible

Alex from Denver, CO on 3/16/2018

There's not much else to be said that hasn't already been said. It not only plays ultra HD discs but it's ultra amazing at everything it is and does. One thing I would like to comment on is the streaming ability. While it doesn't directly support streaming apps like Netflix, it does have the firmware and hardware capability to support streaming in general. The Oppo app for your phone controls the player beautifully and will stream photos, songs, and videos that are saved on your phone. It's also incredibly good at it. For example, I filmed a talent show using my Galaxy S7 phone. It was a video that was a little over 5 minutes long and was 1.8Gbs in file size as it was filmed in 4k resolution. When casting it from my phone using the integrated samsung play feature, I was given the option of either streaming it to my Oppo or my LG OLED tv. Each time I tried to stream it to my OLED, the play back was terribly jittery and not watchable at all. Switching to the Oppo, it played perfectly. As if I had been playing the video directly from a USB drive. Just flawless. I now only stream stuff from my phone to my wonderful Oppo. Best piece of home electronics equipment ever!!

First thing is that this unit has exceptional build quality. If you have a home theater it will match the build quality of the other components that make up your system. The picture quality is amazing with the ability to play both HDR content and Dolby vision. The company continually updates the unit with automatic updates to keep it current. I don't use the build in pre-amplifier so I can't comment on that aspect.

I have to be honest. Until recently, I've never heard of Oppo. So when it came time to upgrade to 4k home theater I did my homework. The Oppo brand had more rave reviews than any other manufacturer that I researched. (That was within my budget). So I decided to try a UDP-203. WOW ! What a difference compared to my Sony BDP-S1000ES. Oppo blows Sony out of the water. Everything is outstanding from the picture quality to the load time. But the thing that really blew my mind was the audio quality. It's like comparing a mp3 file to a hd audio file.

Build quality rivals audiophile level. The setup process is so intuitive, I was able to do the whole thing without the manual. However, the manual provides tons of information for people like me who want to tweak every possible parameter for a better viewing experience. I am using this in my dedicated HT room. I am feeding this directly to my Sony VPL-HW45ES (1080p). The picture is simply spectacular! I even did a head to head comparison from my Roku 3 1080p (using the HDMI input of the Oppo) and the Oppo disc player using my digital copy (HDX) from VUDU via Roku and my Blade Runner (Final Cut UHD 4K BluRay) by switching between inputs. The Roku image (using the Oppo video processing) was simply awesome and would be good enough. BUT, playing the same scenes through the Oppo disc was simply visually stunning. The images became surreal and smooth, life like in every detail. I am seeing things in the film I didn't even know existed. The absolute genius of the Oppo is its ultra advance video (and audio processing). The folks at Oppo are so ahead of the game. Having a second HDMI input is a masterful stroke, as I can simply plug in my Rokur to benefit from the Oppo's picture improvement and have it do all the audio codec processsing! Another absolute genius move is having 7.1 analog outputs for audio: this allows me to use my 100W per channel outboard amplifier for a totally emersive HT experience on my 100 inch screen. I may not ever leave my couch!

Pros: Keep re-reading my review!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the best Blu Ray players I've ever owned. Yes, it is kind of pricey, but, I expect it to give me a long service life. My brother has owned a couple of Oppo players and always had positive things to say about them. The only reason he has owned more than one is due to upgrading to a 4k TV last year. I replaced a Samsung 4k Blu Ray and older Denon multi-format player with this one and I couldn't be happier. It plays all the different formats I currently own, including DVD-Audio. I've had no issues so far and the initial setup was very easy. Time will tell if it's going to hold up. But, I'm enjoying the heck out of it so far.

I have now had the OPPO UDP-203 for 2 weeks now. Here is what I have to say about it. Its is an amazing player, the load up time is fast, picture detail is precise and sharp. Very clear picture, not to dark and not to bright, the sound separation is very focused, sound comes from the allocated speaker. You will not be disappointed with this player.

Pros: Very good price Clear and focused picture Very sharp sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic Blu Ray player. Ordered through Crutchfield and it arrived quickly. I am impressed with the build quality, and the GUI is very good. No, it doesn't have streaming apps, but I was in the market for a player that spent more time getting the quality right. These days, everything else streams video and app duplication across platforms is rampant. Given that my last blu ray player never updates the apps, I can appreciate a player that just does what I bought it to do...Play all the platforms I own and come packed with superior electronics. The chassis is rock solid and I can't embellish how pleased I am with the purchase!

Pros: Does everything I ask of it.

Cons: No cons as of yet.

Ordered this through Crutchfield it arrived 3 Days later.Oppo packed this unit very well it looked so nice I almost didn't want to take it out of the box.Set it up direct HDMI to my Sony XBR75x940D to take it through it's paces.Very clear and easy to maneuver through so the set up was very easy.At this time I pretty much left everything on Auto and then threw everything I could at it.Funky old recorded DVD's,New Blu Ray's,3D Blu Ray was exceptional and every disc loaded fast. Then I ran my 1TB Drive into the back full of jpg,png,flv,mp4,mkv,etc.Song's,photos,videos and movies. The 203 navigated through the files and played everything with ease. Then hooked up to my 7.1 pioneer Dolby Atmos sounded incredible.Played a few CD's some Jackie Wilson,TOTO,James Brown,Steve Winwood,MJ Thriller,WagakkiBand and the sound was killer. All I can say is I love this player so far.

Pros: Plays everything you throw at it.Easy to use.

Cons: Not yet

I have had 2 Samsung and 1 Sony 4K Blu-Ray players. Not one of them performed as well as the Oppo UPD-203 does. It is built like a brick and loads, plays, and does just what it is meant to do. Play Ultra 4K DVD's without skipping or freezing up. It you have the means to upgrade to the Oppo line of players do it. You won't regret it. One more thing. My SONY needed to go into Sony for an exchange so Crutchfield sent my Oppo the NEXT DAY for no extra charge.

Pros: Built well and actually works.

The OPPO UDP-203 has been on my wishlist for some time - Originally meant to go with a high-end projector and AV components in the soon to be completed movie room but i decided to buy it early and pair it with my Samsung 55TV 9000 series ... and wow! You can see the difference right away with the deep, rich colors and then crisp sound quality. Especially impressive when playing 4K content but also fabulous at upscaling any old Blu-Ray or DVD.and i'll save the best for last ... no more endless waiting for the content to load!!

Pros: Super fast loading time, 4K quality and upscalling high-end quality well built

Oppo does it again!

Jason from Westfield, MA on 2/16/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this player to pair with a Sony XBR-55X900E, which I also got at Crutchfield. I used to own one of the original Oppo Blu ray players. So I was familiar with the quality of their players. Once again, I was impressed. First, one of the things about Oppo I like is the fact that their players have a metal housing. They feel substantial and well made, unlike most of their counterparts. I also appreciate how quickly this player loads a disc. The movie's menu is up and running very quickly. Unsurprisingly, the picture is stunning! The first 4K movie I watched was Unforgiven. That film is notorious for being very dimly lit in many scenes. Between the Oppo and the Sony, it's easily the best I've ever seen that movie look on a TV screen. I also really like the HDMI input that the Oppo has. I plugged my older Apple TV into it, and there's a significant improvement to the video quality, thanks to the Oppo's processor. And it makes my standard Blu Ray movies look excellent too. Great customer service from Crutchfield, as always. I got an "open box" deal. So I saved a few bucks. If you're wondering if the Oppo is worth the extra money, compared to many other 4K players, it is. Though it doesn't have streaming services, the build quality, the processor, HDMI input, and second HDMI output (for sound), easily are worth the price.

Pros: Well built chassis Fast loading Beautiful upscaling and 4K picture

Cons: No streaming apps.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box the unit looked very professional and sleek the best I've seen in a while. The packaging was really nice. Played a few 4k movies and the load time is really fast as well has skipping scenes and forward/rewind. The picture looked amazing on my new tv which is the Sony XBR930 The interface is easy to use and has a lot of different configuration items which I still have to learn so I mostly left things on auto. The back of the unit has plenty of connection options, but I am only using HDMI to receiver. The remote lights up on touch which is cool, it is a bit heavy and meaty, but that fine. Really love just looking at OPPO even if its turned of, haha... You will enjoy it for sure.

I've had my eye on purchased an Oppo for several years and finally pulled the trigger. This replaced a Sony Blu-ray player I had. The first movie I watched the resolution was so much better on my TV plus it played dolby atmos through my Pioneer Elite receiver (the Oppo was already setup for bitstream). I couldn't be happier and I believe the Oppo will be in my home theater setup for many years to come. This is no normal everyday 4k player it comes in a cool carrying bag, and it actually has a nice thick user manual. What can you buy now that has that. Hands down it has a lot of features that work and the picture is amazing. Plays my files off the network and so much more. It is beefy/heavy actually feels like something, you can plug a big HDMI cord in the back and it won't slide around, lol. The input is a plus I use it with my Nvidia shield for apps and the audio HDMI to my older yamaha Aventage receiver and it sounds so much better than my Xbox 1s so far best investment I've made, love it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The OPPO UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player I have had for 2 weeks now. It is everything that it was advertised to be. I had the "Samsung Electronics UBD-K8500 3D Wi-Fi 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player (2016 Model)" before I got the OPPO. I was not happy with the remote or some of the control functions. I can tell you that the "OPPO UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player" is miles ahead of the Samsung. It plays all my UHD 4k disc great. It is the best all around Home Theater Media system I have ever had and I've had a few. It was money well spent. It has a fantastic remote, full of features, just what I wanted this 4K player should last me for a long time.

Pros: It has great sound overall it's a fantastic player!

Cons: Maybe a little costly but still worth it.

I had to replace my receiver after someone spilled something on/in it. I decided to upgrade my Blu-Ray player, and used Crutchfield labels and premium HDMI cables while making the swap. Colors are brighter, separation between audio channels is improved and bass is tighter. The Oppo player weighs enough to operate with one hand. Most new players require you to hold them with one hand to prevent them from moving when you push a button.

Pros: Great picture and sound Heavy enough to not move when buttons are pushed

Cons: None

The Oppo replaced an older player. Load time is very fast. Audio quality is outstanding. I use the HDMI output for movies but the analog outputs for 2 channel music (CDs). I have a fairly high end audio system using separate preamp and amplifiers. Using the analog output for CDs means employing the DAC in the Oppo rather than the DAC in the preamp. There is a clear improvement in audio quality using the Oppo DAC even in the UDP-203 model.

I previously had a Samsung K8500 (still have it). It worked fine but I wanted for versatility with my disc player. This Oppo gives me every option to play any type of disc. I have only two SACDs which sound amazing on the Oppo. Now I am out at garage sales looking for old SACDs and DVD-Audios. With regards to 4K discs they look amazing. What I like about the Oppo is that you can customize during set up to work the best with your particular A/V equipment. The set up process is intuitive and very easy. This is top shelf equipment that along with my Denon 4200 make full use of my Klipsch speakers. This is worth the money and I now understand what Oppo owners love about Oppo equipment.

i purchased this as a scratch and dent item, but it looked brand new and unused when I took it out of the box and it has been operating without any problems so far. I have played DVDs, Blu Rays (including 4 (UHD), and CDs without any issues. I also connected a USB hard drive with music files (FLAC) to the Oppo, and it was able to recognize and play them without any issues. The interface for the music files is not the best looking, and I have been unable to find a search function so far (which means a lot of scrolling to find anything). Both video and audio quality are excellent, and disc loading is quite fast. The build quality appears excellent, and I appreciate the lighted remote. I don't find the lack of streaming apps to be a problem, and use a Roku Premier+ for this function. Overall, I have been very pleased with this purchase.

Pros: Excellent Audio and Video Excellent build quality Easy to set up Quick disc loading Plays wide variety of discs and music files

first things first, when you open the box and see how this unit is packaged, you will see right away that this is not the $100 variety unit. The player itself reeks of quality construction; a beautiful brushed aluminum faceplate, steel chassis, backlit remote with well laid out buttons. Another pleasant surprise is a full printed clear and concise manual. Now to the nitty-gritty- the video looked superlative on my older 61" 1080p Sony projection TV. I can't even imagine how much better it will look when the TV is replaced for one with HD resolution. As for the audio, I am running 5.1 speakers and currently using an older Anthem preamp processor without HDMI inputs; my next best choice was to use 6 RCA cables. Again, like the video, not the best chain from start to finish and STILL this unit made every CD, DVD, SACD & Blue Ray disc I threw at it sound better. What you are really paying for when you step up to a unit like this are much better digital-to-analog converters. Highly recommended.

I mostly watch movies in the dark so I really like the option to dim the display or turn it off completely. I also keep a flash drive with all my WAV music files plugged in. However I have some trouble with some songs not playing correctly and sometimes failing to play. The same songs play when I have the drive plugged into my receiver, so I haven't figured that out yet. Top Notch Player & Worth the Cost

Jason from Little Rock, AR on 12/14/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit over the Thanksgiving weekend, and I've honestly haven't had as much free time as I'd like to watch some of my 4K movies on this unit. I have tinkered with all the settings, did some video samples, and watched one movie on 4K disc. I was previously using the Sony UBP-X800 since March, and I hated this unit. The Sony player had constant problems with it powering down every 20+ minutes during a movie for no apparent reason. Resetting the player no longer fixed this issue, and I started experiencing it more often than not. It seems to maybe be perhaps whatever the source disc used by the movie studio; as that is the only thing I can think of. But Sony support was responsive and would only give me canned messages on their forum. I can unequivocally say that the Oppo is a far superior player. It feels more solid and has way more functionality and features within the settings. Even getting a display on the unit itself is nice too; as most players nowadays no longer have one. While I haven't had a lot of playing time yet, this player hasn't powered down on me during a disc or movie. So by that account, for me this Oppo is a definite recommend. While it is expensive, if you are an audio and videophile, have a 4K TV and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X, then you should have no problem paying for the Oppo.

Pros: Solid build quality, hi quality components, lots of customizable features in the settings, excellent video and audio quality, lots of output connections, backlit remote, and a reusable shopping bag

Cons: Remote is humongous but it is still a nice remote

OK, so this was expensive compared to some of the other options, but you get what you pay for. We love it. Easy to set up, easy to use and great picture. This is built to last. Everything about from the first time you unpack it lets you know that this was the right choice.

Pros: Great picture, easy to set up

Oppo lives up to its reputation. Build quality is top notch, front panel design is neat and clear, remote is logical and comprehensive, ditto for the on-screen navigation and settings, and the audio and video quality is superb. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, the picture quality from both UHD and HD sources, not to mention the quality I'm getting passing a Tivo through via the HDMI input. I know reviews indicate that most of the lower cost UHD players provide the same quality picture. But there are so many other things that made me like this machine over the others. I really like the multiple audio options, including coaxial digital which I use into an integrated stereo amp. Also, the remote is excellent, lighting up when I pick it up in the dark. Of course the build quality of the UDP-203 is very satisfying. While other may not appreciate the absence of apps, I like that there are none, because I already have them on the OLED TV I'm using.

Pros: Upscales well multiple audio out options HDMI In Excellent Remote

Before I had this player I had the Samsung 8500, one of the first 4K machines. Love the Oppo build quality and how well it works. Great picture (better than the Sammy) and the Oppo is just a simple high quality music/video playing machine. None of the extras. Very happy with my purchase and Crutchfield is awesome as ever.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After a lot of research on Blue-ray players with the current standards and protocols capabilities, it came down to Oppo 203. A little gamble since the company was new to me. From the time it was unpacked to the time of the first 4k HDR movie played, it was the most pleasant experience. Simple and elegant menu controls not created by a 5 yr old like most electronics OS's these days. The lack of streaming options it's a bonus, this player is dedicated to one thing and one thing only: play movies. And it does it really well. Remote control is extensive, too extensive for my purposes. I would have love to see a simple, smaller one included as well. However it is easy to use universal remotes to handle the Oppo. I use the LG's Magic Remote. Do not hesittae to jump into this pricey player. it is worth your home theatre setup, most specially in the 4K realm.

Pros: Quality built Video and audio output with a miriad of standards supported Menu elegance

Cons: Remote control a little too big and key cramped

Highly recommended. mass market brands. Like some others, this was my first Oppo purchase but it won't be my last. Purchased for Dolby Vision support to pair with a new 2017 LG OLED. I've been blown away by the build quality and picture quality. 4k UHDs looks phenomenal and regular Blu-ray scaling is truly impressive. Surprisingly good. From the unboxing to just holding the remote, you know immediately the quality is a cut above. Elegant interface but within are lots of detailed options. Plays about any disc I can imagine wanting to play. It actually gets firmware updates! If you can remember a time when electronics were made to last instead of being disposable, when you could get the impression that the people designing it had any concept or regard for how it would really be used, then you will get the best kind of nostalgia with this unit. I'll be pleased to support Oppo going forward and reward a company who still knows how to get all the details right.

Pros: Build quality, interface, picture quality, upscaling

Cons: None really. Priced above other options, but you get what you pay for.

What can I say? Played a few movies tonight and listened to a Jazz CD, which blew my socks off. This is my first audio/videophile disc player. The audio is superb playing CD-ROM music. Heard highs and nuances I had never heard before on my other Blu-ray and CD-ROM players. The menu system is very well laid out, and is fast. 4K Blu rays load fast. The picture is superb also. I tested this on a non-4K Samsung TV UN55ES8000 with a 4K Blu-ray and the picture was much better than the regular Blu-ray. On my Sony XBR75X900E, the 4K picture was amazing. You can see this is a high-end unit when you open the package. Well worth the money after researching Sony and Samsung players. I am really glad I picked this unit!! Crutchfield's delivery was next day service, I thought it would be 2-3 days, it was a nice surprise!

Pros: Great sound, video, menu, fast loading compared to older Sony.

Cons: None yet.

Purchased the Oppo UDP-203 in November after upgrading my TV to a LG C7, 65 inch. The combination of the Oppo and the C7 is amazing, providing fantastic picture quality on everything that I have thrown at it. I have been very impressed with the upscaling ability of standard Blu-ray discs, which have never looked better. In addition, my 5.1 surround set-up (haven't splurged yet for Atmos) is also sounding better than ever, due to the Oppo's audio capabilities. Finally, I was also quite impressed when unpacking the Oppo - - It is built like a tank with incredible build quality, and the extras and packing is the best for an electronic product that I have seen (the provided HDMI cable, the detailed manual, the bag, etc). The UDP-203 has been easy to use and the remote is thoughtful and well-designed. Overall, I can now see why Oppo has been the desired brand by so many for such a long time. I'm very happy with this purchase and to now be in the Oppo family.

I bought 3 4k players this one cost the most. Sony, Sansung, Oppo. With the Oppo being 3x the cost (Because of black Friday sales on the others) I went home and hooked them all up. Oppo wins. With multiple hook ups I did not have to upgrade my receiver. I love that I can change the picture to fit the TV without going into the settings. So no matter what type of media I can change it with a button on the remote. Played everything I threw at it. Even dvds I had made. It does not stream but most TVs do so I did not need that. Set up was easy and did not conflict with settings on the TV

Pros: Change picture aspect on the fly to fit different media Change audio on the fly Set up was easy Quick loading

This is my first five star rating. Typically a product has to be outstanding to receive a four star. This is an exceptional piece of equipment. I was not impressed with the two LG OLED TVs I purchased because of judder and 3D ghosting. I had used 4k players from Sony, Samsung and LG, I thought the TVs were at fault. Untill I got the OPPO-203! My Lord! I finally see the advantages of the 4k format. Color, detail, motion, and 3D sharpness, then we get to the audio! WoW, I thought they stopped making audio disc drives of this sonic proformance and quality for under$2000. It truly has/does it all. Am thinking of purchasing an OPPO 208 for the sound room.

Pros: Truly great audio and video. Very solid construction. Important features not found in other drives.

Solid 4k disc player

Rob from Pahoa, HI on 11/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I figured if I was going to go 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision with a new TV I might as well get the best player out there that actually supports Dolby Vision. While I could get 2-3 inferior players for the same price, this is about what I paid for my first blu-ray player in 2007 and I expect it to last at least a few years. So for the same price I'm happier just having one really good player that should last and keep getting updates. I love all the info provided on screen and that it has a display on the machine to show amount of time content has played and other info. I've been annoyed that disc players have abandoned this quite functional feature in the past few years. The device is gorgeously packaged, feels solid and substantial, and just works. It's played every 4K title I've tried without issue. Has no trouble passing an Apple TV 4 through its HDMI input, which saves me a port on both my AVR and TV. The remote is great too. Large, lights up, big buttons. I use a Harmony, which was easy to configure, but the Oppo remote is just so much nicer to use. DVD and Blu-Ray upconversion look as good as they probably can. No regrets about this purchase vs. buying another model and hoping for promised Dolby Vision updates that might never come.

Pros: Plays all the discs I've tried without issue. Allows another device to pass through the player, saving ports Get regular updates and there are many enthusiastic owners on support forums. Comes with an actual printed manual

Cons: Pricey Large and may require more room in your set up if it's replacing a tiny disc player

Pros: Many hook-up combos, well made, a piece of art

Cons: None

Absolutely silent when spinning a disc, built like a tank, doesn't get overly hot during a normal 2-3 hour movie even when enclosed in a wooden cabinet, has the ability to modify audio and video setting independently from the TV, and the most recent firmware supports all major audio (Atmos et. al.) and video (HDR, Dolby Vision, etc.) available to date. It also can integrate into more complex setups via rear IR eye, RS-232 port, or 12V triggers. Not For Analog Input Amplifiers!

Albert J from Norristown, PA on 10/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a CD player, I experience audio drop outs through the analog outputs. OPPO service was contacted and they say that my TV, a Sony, Bravia XBR series has a "hot" HDMI out put and the "handshake" of the HDMI will interrupt the analog outputs. OPPO tech service was quite friendly and helpful but all of their suggestions were to no avail. I listen more to music than I do to movies and fear I bought the wrong universal disc player. This problem did not exist with my Denon udp. Why am I using the analog outputs? My receiver is a Yamaha R-S700 purchased from Crutchfield and has no HDMI inputs. I would not exchange the Yamaha for another just for the HDMI inputs. Being interested in music over home theater is my choice. I have a few excellent analog amplifiers, a Carver M500t, and several great tube amps, HK, Eico, Sherwood and the like. There were some issues with the DVD side, locking up and no picture but so far OPPO tech service suggested some setting changes and so far they seem to work. I wish I had known about the shortcomings of the UDP-203 as a CD player when using the analog outputs. I would most definitely affected my choice. My money might have been better spent on a dedicated quality CD player, such as a Marantz and a 99 dollar blu ray player! If you have good analog input amps and listen to a lot of CDs, the UDP-203 might not be a good choice.

Pros: Picture Quality

Cons: Not analog friendly for music

I have noticed things in movies, which I have watched dozens of times, that I never noticed before. This is machine exudes quality in every aspect, the build, the performance, back-lit remote. The most marked difference is the sound. Movie soundtracks are spectacular and sharp. I highly, highly recommend it.

Pros: Build, video and audio performance

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definite 5-star. I've seen these and the rating for years. The price held me back. I'm retiring and been buying the toys before I retire. I bought a Sony 800 4K ultra bluray a couple weeks ago. It kept telling me no disk, and would shut down in the middle of a movie. Never had issues with Sony players before. I returned it and decided now's the time to try an Oppo. After fighting the temptation to get the 205, I decided to get the 203. It's a home run. Opened the box. No plastic wrap here. The player comes in a cloth satchel, The remote, cables in a box. First 4K movie I put in, I saw a difference in the picture. Must have some awesome video processing going on there vs. the Sony. Sound was good too coming from this box. I decided to play a CD in it. I used to play CD's in my old Sony bluray. I never did really like the Sony for playing CD's. I was thinking about buying a CD player, but got a turntable instead. If I would have got this Oppo prior to the turntable, I don't believe I would have bought the turntable, the Oppo's processing is that good. Picture is great. Sound is great. I use Parasound amps for music and a Denon AVR for movies feeding Klipsch Forte III's. Cant wait to dive into the menus and see what I can do, but it sounds great right out of the box. Now I see why you see such excellent reviews for Oppo. If you are looking for something to make your movies and music sound and look fantastic, get one. I'm not disappointed.

Pros: Video processing. Audio processing. Actual paper manual

Cons: Cost at first, but now I think it's worth it

I first tried this going into my 2005 Panasonic Viera 50" plasma - using a standard DVD, Fellini's "Juliet of the Spirits", his "Amarcord", and Blu-ray "Star Wars" (all 6 yes!, a sea change in effects between when they started in 77' and the II and III). Next was to connect my LG 55" OLED. None of my content is 4k UHD 'native'. I have not tried other players and this is by NO means meant as a comparative review. I don't have the money to buy things more than once if at all possible. Short and to the point this player is possibly more than I need at this time, but I always try to buy for future as well as present - forward compatibility. It's features and ability to tweak settings is impressive, and the speed and ease it does whatever I want is fantastic. I am old and paper manuals are I love, the manual for this is large, comprehensive, and easy to use. I don't need to log in or search the web, it's all there to my satisfaction. The Oppo 203 ... "gets out of the way". I love the remote and all it's buttons and auto backlight, though I wish the backlight was the button descriptor and not the button with symbol... but that is just me and very minor, that it also so robust - more in it's favor. Everything I have viewed (again no 4k UHD source material) has benefitted from the 203 on both TV's, the 1080p Panasonic plasma and the very new to me LG 5" 4k UHD. That is what I hoped, so I am very, very pleased. Don't look here for any buyers remo

Pros: fast, easy to install and use, gets out of the way, great remote, great paper manual,

Eric from Harvard, IL on 9/21/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having previously owned a different UHD Blu-ray player I wondered if the Oppo would really be much better. The answer is yes. Beyond the extra audio processing abilities, video playback is more consistent and the quality is amazing. The extra HDMI in is great as I can now have 5HDMI inputs instead of my TV's 4 (which I'm now using all 5). I love it's Dolby Vision compatibly, although I am waiting for Spider-Man Homecoming before owning a Dolby Vision disc. My only knock is the remote control is not a universal remote I can use for my other devices. Not a huge deal but I wish it were.

Pros: Great picture and sound Extra HDMI in Dolby Vision

Cons: Non Universal remote Expensive

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I know this is a site frequented by people who are fairly serious about audio and video but I had strong trepidation's about spending this much on something that, at a basic level, I can get similar functionality from, disc playing at closer to $50. After receiving it I can tell you I was absolutley wrong. Yes, the UDP-203 is #1 on practically every list and is one of the few that plays Dolby Vision content. And SACD if you can find your music on this format but there is more. Open the box and the product is packed by a company that cares. The product is very well protected for shipping, the player is wrapped in a protective bag, the accessories are neatly boxed in a well built box, they included a quality hdmi cable. It's packaged like a fine Swiss watch. Set it up and turn the device on, within a couple of seconds it is ready; not the typical wait times of other devices. Loading times, done, so quickly you'd think something was wrong. Firmware updates? Fast. Everything about this player speaks of quality. Picture Quality? Trust me, you won't find better

Pros: - Everything about the product conveys quality

Cons: - Nothing

I bought this because I got really tired of the lousy players out there. I've had three Sony players - they all seems to freeze up right in the middle of a movie. My buddy calls it the race to the bottom - build them as cheap as you can... LG, Samsung, Sony - apparently I'm not alone. Most have more negative than positive reviews. This player is great. It starts right up - gets to the movie without stuttering and has yet to lock up on me. And the picture quality is great. Lots of options to tweak the sound and picture to your liking. I'm very happy...

Great 4k player. I've owned a previous OPPO model which I loved. This one loads much faster and the picture quality is fantastic. It read all of the discs I put in and picture was great for all. I only put in one 4k movie (Logan) which was great. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish the 4K movie with HDR 10 was a little brighter. I have a Sony Z9 and the movie looked just a bit dark in some scenes.

Pros: Great picture. Fast loading. Sound quality excellent.

Cons: A little dark playing some HDR scenes.

The Oppo UDP-203 is performing as I expected from the many excellent reviews and from my experience with an OPPO BDP-105 which is working perfectly but without 4K capability. 4K Ultra HD discs look excellent on my LG 65 inch OLED monitor. I compared Planet Earth II as a Blu-ray with the replacement 4K Ultra HD disk. There is a definite improvement particularly in the color. The picture and sound is better than in a theater and without the distractions. Older Blu-ray and DVD's also look better than ever! SACD's sound great when output thru the discrete analog outputs or from HDMI output to my receiver. I have a ROKU into the HDMI input and it is working well. I hardwired my network with ethernet input and it has worked well for audio and video from my computer.

Pros: Everything working well!

Reference grade Universal Disk Player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Oppo-UDP 203 is superb. The included manual is very thorough, which made set up a breeze. Note: when this unit was initially released at the beginning of the year there were a few problems with it. Since then, however, Oppo has released a few firmware updates that resolve all the issues. So, just remember to update this unit with the latest firmware update. Updating it over wifi or ethernet is the easiest way to it. You'll need to update to the latest firmware to be able to watch UHD disks in Dolby Vision otherwise you;ll be watching them in HDR 10. I am very pleased with this unit and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Universal disk player capable of playing 4k blu rays with HDR and is capable of playing content with Dolby Vision.

Pros: UHD player with HDR and Dolby vision capability.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got tired of the slow, confusing performance of my Pioneer ELITE BDP-80 player and was looking for an upgrade. OPPO has been on my mind for awhile, but I wanted to wait for a player that supported 4K video and latest HDMI and HDCP protocols. Boy am I glad I waited! Gone are the slow performance and slow ejecting of the tray and slow load times of the Pioneer. The picture quality on my Sony Bravia 65" XBR900E are stunning. The OPPO is very fast and has superb picture quality. Since I have a Marantz 8802a pre-amp/processor, I did not need the higher end unit, since this player functions as a transport only. I'm very happy with it and also the apparent frequency of the firmware updates. HDMI control still a bit buggy as I need to turn player off to watch TV via ARC, but I suspect this on OPPO's radar and will be addressed in a future update. I highly recommend this player.

Pros: Stunning picture High speed loading & unloading of discs Reliable decoding of all formats Quick switching & no delays or handshake issues w/ processor/pre-amp Backlight remote with big, easy to read buttons High speed, quality HDMI cable included Great packaging

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic 4K UHD Blu Ray Player. Bought it cause it also plays Hi Res Music via SACD's, as well as DSD and FLAC files off of a USB Flash Drive that plugs into it in three different areas. I use the Analog outs on the OPPO when playing music on it through my Anthem MRX 520 (via the analog inputs) and let me tell you, I've never heard better sounding music. It also has an HDMI Input that you can plug a Chromecast into so that you can play music through it via WIFI (Tidal, Spotify, and Plex), which is better than hooking it up directly to your AVR since the DAC in the OPPO is better. Just trust me. Simply put, It's a wonderful product and exceeds my expectations and does everything I want it to do and more :-)

Pros: Too many to list, read my review. :-)

Cons: Be careful when upgrading the firmware, it is very sensitive. One tiny screw up and you'll render it unusable. Read the instructions very carefully before upgrading the firmware.

Did the research.. Only two choices : Sony UBP X800 or Oppo UDP 203 .. The Oppo excelled in quality of design and construction .. Like the fact that they did not integrate streaming services .. Never met a player that did this right .. Apple and others do this really well .. Reproduction of both DVD and CD are audiophile quality as is the picture .. The initial stage of the audio/video chain ie turntable, tonearm, cartridge, CD transport, CD or DVD player is the most critical.. Why skimp here? Yes the Oppo is more expensive than the Sony but I intend on keeping this thing around for a while, like 5 years or so .. My bet is that the Oppo will still be cranking out great sound and picture for some time .. I am not as confident about the Sony .. And with a dinner and a movie for two costing somewhere between $50 and $100 bucks why not stay at home and enjoy the unit the critics place at the top of the heap ..??? also thanks again to crutchfield for providing the data and customer service that made the selection and purchase a breeze .. the video they provide on the Oppo is worth checking out ..

Pros: picture/sound intelligent streamlined design superior construction

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this product in two days, thanks Crutchfield. A lot of people think this 203 is expensive, but really. Its a preamp, reference CD and Bluray player all in one. I've wanted one for years, wish I hadn't waited, everybody talks about the video, which Is amazing, but the sound is amazing, as well oppo is an audiophile company, after all. It runs fine through my Onkyo 545, hdr and all, can' t wait to try a Dolby vision disc. Everything looks greal, blurays look 4k, DVD is unbelievable, sometimes I get 10 bit color, always get 10 bit color on 4k. Only problen, the input on the back loses handshake whenever I pause or fast foward, audio drops out, but thats my receiver, just not that big a deal, really, as my receiver needs Input one for ARC, and input one is the only HDR input. Oh well. This unit also does hard drives well, read the old 5 gig I plugged into the back, plays all of my FLAC music and a bunch of old music videos I've ddownloaed over the years, the best I've seen, neither my oppo or my old bluray player did this well, so no messing with NAS So, 4K blu is amazing, Bluray not far off, and DVDs, even homebrew stuff is very good. One thing, I plugged the analog left and right outs into the CD in in order to use the better DACs for music, works great, but you need to downmix to stereo so that the bass wont go out the sub channel(doesnt affect HDMI). Overall a dream come true, dont let anybody tell you this machine is ov

Pros: Versatile, replaces several devices, turns even the most mediocre setup into paradise

Cons: Some lip synch issues, but theres a button for it, Cant tear myself away from it

Oppo Does It Again

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Blu-ray player is several years old now and still working perfectly. But, unfortunately, it does not play UHD (4K) discs. When it came time to upgrade, I chose another Oppo even though there are less expensive options. The player and the remote look just about the same as earlier models. There is a new, more attractive user interface. Gone are streaming services like Netflix and VUDU. It includes a UHD video processor that does a good job of upscaling HD. A lot of the videos on my network hard drive are 1280 x 720; it makes some look almost like UHD. It seems to play just about every disc format there is. The remote has a motion sensor that backlights the buttons whenever it is moved. So, it's an evolutionary product not a revolutionary one. Oppo continues to have the best players available.

Pros: Very high quality. Oppo reputation.

Cons: None.

I had a Samsung K8500 HD4k player ,before the oppo UBD203,I thought the picture and the upconversion of that player was very good however, the unit's remote is awful, and the rewind and fast forward feature of the samsung is terrible. Also the unit has no front display so who knows where you are at any point in the movie. After talking with Stone at Crutchfield I was convinced that the oppo 203 would be a much better fit for me. Stone was absolutely correct; not only is the picture and sound outstanding, including its upconversion of Blue Ray and even DVD discs, but the backlight of the remote is awesome and with the front display you just can't go wrong in my opinion. Not to mention the build quality is incredible. It just goes to show, you get what you pay for and with the qualified advisers and the backing from Crutchfield, you cant go wrong!

I've had the Oppo UDP-203 since 2 weeks now and folks if i'm happy. First of all the interface is fast and user friendly. Icons are intuitive and easy for set up. I didn't really touch much and left basically everything as preset from the box, but I did go through all the options and again they are well explained and easy to adjust. The manual is one of the best I've ever seen in the world of instructions (I work in the automotive engineering) beside there are a lot of videos online to help you tweak the system at your liking. I'm no expert in audio/video, I go with the heart, the eyes and the ears and I've plugged the Oppo to my A/V Marantz 1604 (on a 7.1) with dual HDMI, one for Video on for Audio, and tested the whole set up with blurays of The Dark Knight Rises, Mononoke Hime, Drive, Rogue One, Labyrinth 4k, Fantastic Beasts 4K and the Mummy 4k and regular Bluray. Let me say that for an old movie like the Mummy, the difference from bluray to 4k is minimal. Everything looks and sounds spectacular, especially with Fantastic Beasts and The Dark Knight. Soon i'll go for 300 and Blade Runner 4k. One extra note: the remote controller! It's motion sensitive and lights up when you pick it up, I realize it's very useful in the dark when watching a movie, especially compared to the Marantz one that does not ligh up.

Pros: Slim, slick, minimal, elegant, and high performance. A total win. The remote controller

Cons: I don't know? Maybe it could be 50$ cheaper?

Best of the best

Rex from Lake Forest, CA on 6/23/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Oppo UDP-203 is the best 4K blueray player available today! I already have a 103D, and Apple TV, so the combination is great. I tried "La La Land" to evaluate both sound and video, and the sound is great. The video is as good as it gets, too. With the Apple TV you can stream Netflix and Youtube. Tried Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung, not even close. I use a Marantz receiver, Martin Logan speakers, and 2 Res subwoofers. It's Imax in my living room. I have to mention Lloyd from tech support, he spent 1 hour and it's perfect, he gets A+.

Pros: Best Video & Sound

Cons: Until you update firmware, it doesn't work.

The only way to watch a 4K disc

Brandon from Dallas, TX on 6/12/2017

Simply unbelievable! We were using an Xbox One for 4K viewing. Something felt off with the picture quality. We had an Oppo 103 and felt 1080P blu rays looked better. So, we picked up an Oppo 203. The difference is night and day. Oppo was made for high quality viewing. Pick one up you will not be disappointed. The remote has an automatic light that's great for using in dark rooms.

Pros: Build quality is heavy and it feels worth the price based on that alone. Samsung has a player that can't weigh a 1/4 pound. Picture is reference quality

Cons: None that we have found.

Great details in picture and sound whether movies or CD through HDMI

Anthony N from Washington, DC on 6/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using it in HDMI so I may benefit from Audyssey in my pre-amp. CD and pictures are better than the Oppo 95 in CD and movies. More details in sound and picture , tighter bass and more musical, more film like. Solid Picture no grainy. the same in sound. The voices in movies especially are crisp and with more authority. Much faster operation. Does not play 4k properly on 1080 monitors. No fan noise. Colors are rich and picture FILM like. Better infrared remote.

Pros: Picture and Sound better than the best opportunity 95. Crisp and film like both

Cons: none

Pros: Sturdy construction I believe this is the Best 4K Blu-ray player ever built . It was a little expensive but worth every penny ! The first movie I watched was Vin Diesel XXX and it just about blew my speakers off the wall. I have a onkyo receiver that I bought from Crutchfield and together this makes a make Awesome combination for my home theater

Hi-Res DLNA too, not just audio & video CDs, SACDs, DVDs, BDs & UBDs

Uwe from Braintree, MA on 5/27/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player is simply all you ever need, from playing back audio & video CDs, SACDs, DVDs, BDs, and UBDs! - But there's more: I am using this player also as audio hi-res player, and it does a fantastic job playing back all my FLAC (up to 192 kHz, 24-bit; also including multi-channel FLAC!), DSD (SACD), and MP3 files, wow! - I am connecting flawlessly over the network to the SSD that is attached to my ASUS wireless router. If I want to play back my DSD files (natively to my Denon AVR-X6300H) I use the Samba connecting. Everything else I use DLNA. Displays title/artist information on my TV (and when connected via DLNA, the album cover artwork is also shown). Very highly recommended!

Pros: Great design, fast, reliable, and fun to use. Plays all kinds of media from optical discs. Also an awesome Audio Hi-Res network player. Works flawlessly like all other players from Oppo.

Cons: Does not do HDCD (24-bit encoded CDs), but it's okay. Only have very few.

Good unit for the money.

Matt from Plainfield, NJ on 5/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this in May/17. Unfortunately, I was spoiled as I had an audiophile older Denon CD player, which gave out after 22 years (DCD-2560). This unit is new to me, but appears to be well built and works fine. The sound is very clear and natural. Although it is both a DVD and CD player I purchased it mainly for the audio side. Wanted to replace my CD player with another of good quality due to an extensive CD collection. The only glitch I find, is it must be very sensitive to dust or blemishes on the Cd's at it often "burps" '. About twice on each CD. Again it's new to me, but my Cds are extremely well handled and very clean. Overall I am satisfied.

Pros: Clean look and great sound.

Cons: may be a little sensitive to dust/blemishes on CDs.

Pros: Build quality, performance, customer service / support and packaging

Cons: ONLY ding is I would appreciate 10/30 second fwd/back buttons. Have grown accustomed to that feature with other content providers remotes and use it a lot....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You already know it plays all formats with state of the art circuitry and processors. But this is a five star product for all the reasons you didn't buy it. It remembers the last spot you left off on a disc you were playing, has a backlit remote that lights up when touched, can zoom in on a video format or use an anamorphic processor to eliminate the black bars and fill your screen. It also has a great one button feature that turns off/on the video signal to your tv when listening to music to save your display! The only problem with this player is that I could go on and on...

Pros: Best player I ever owned!

Cons: Best $500+ I ever spent!

Best 4K Player without a doubt!

Eric from Eagle Mountain, UT on 5/20/2017

If your considering buying one, don't wait just jump in and you won't regret it. I had the Samsung UHD player before this one and what a difference, you can see the difference especially when played on a really good TV like a LG OLED. The sharpness, colors are amazing, this is as good as it get's. They also made huge improvement over their earlier players in how quickly a disc loads up and plays now, much improved. One piece of advice is use the audio out HDMI port to your AV receiver and use the main straight to the TV, it makes a difference. This player is so good, you don't want anything between the video signal coming from this player to your TV set.

Pros: Picture quality, build quality and sound

Cons: Zero

Solid Player

John from Florida on 5/19/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The quality of this player starts from the moment you open the box; very well packaged, first class all the way around. It up-scales 1080p to 4k beautifully. My only gripe is that the player (as of the time of this review) will not simultaneously output audio to both the Main and Audio only HDMI ports. I have the Main HDMI port connected directly to my OLED TV and the Audio Only to my A/V receiver. For everyday viewing I use my TV sound bar so this required me to turn off HDMI CEC and HDMI pass-through on the A/V receiver as it will automatically select the Audio only HDMI port if it senses a connection meaning no sound to the TV. Oppo technical support was very responsive to my inquiry about this and stated they would consider this issue in a future firmware update.

Pros: Build quality, picture quality, Oppo customer service

Cons: As of 5/19/17 will not simultaneously output audio to both Main and Audio only HDMI ports.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player produces beautiful pictures and incredible sound. I'm using it with an LG EF9500 4K HDR TV, and a Denon 1200 receiver. I ended up connecting the Oppo directly to the TV for video and directly to the Denon for sound. (The Denon's pass-through worked fine, but the TV required manually turning HDR on and off each time--which requires a restart. So I connected the player to an unused HDMI port on the TV & configured it to have HDR always on. Much simpler to used now.) The Oppo unit adjusts automatically to non-HDR discs, which I greatly appreciate. The user interface on the home screen is clean, and well-thought-out. I have not needed to explore the menus in yet, since the default settings work so well. I also appreciated the hefty manual, although I haven't needed to dig into it much. I bought this player after first buying the LG 4K HDR player & returning it. That unit's disc transport system was very loud and vibration-prone. By contrast, the Oppo is very well designed and built -- and the quality shows.

Pros: Beautiful video and sound. Easy to connect and operate Quality throughout

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a BDP-103 as well as a BDP-105D, have not replaced our main 70" TV with 4K yet but have other smaller TV's so I figured I would try out the Sony UBP-X800, picture looked pretty good and much better than the Xbox One S my son has, sound quality was great but using 4K Blu Ray discs it would lock up (tried many 4K movies) did all updates to no avail talked to Crutchfield and in well over 20yrs of purchasing from them I think this is only my 2nd return, which they did with no issue and I swapped it for another Oppo ($260 more though), this UDP-203. And....BAM! Again Oppo is night and day above everyone else, so now I have (3) Oppo's and they all work perfectly with the highest build quality and support. I do use my 105D for lots of music, high res, Network streaming, etc. Yes the 205 has a newer DAC but I think once I choose the TV for our main room I may just buy another 203 for all movies and just keep the 105D for strictly music. PS - As with all 3 of my Oppo's I use the HDMI in from my Xfinity X1 and each Oppo cleans up the compressed cable signal quite a bit and this 203 is no different. Highly recommended! From someone who has tried most of the other brands, just pay the money for an Oppo, they don't fail and never disappoint.

Pros: Built like a tank, nice new interface (compared to 103/105) supports 3D, Decent Dac still in this unit (not as good as 105/105D or 205 though) Will support Dolby Vision

Cons: No streaming apps, but like me most people have other options there so not really a con. Other than above....ZERO!

As other reviewers stated the packaging is on a whole other level. As I rely on my Denon X4200W to do HDMI switching to my OLED panel in a seperate room, hook-up was extremely easy -- just power, HDMI, and network. As stated, my equipment was in another room than my display so I had hoped Oppo had a smartphone app ready, but they did not, so settings adjustment required a work-around. I purchased a couple 4K blu-rays in preparation for this player, Star Trek Beyond and Fantastic Beasts. I would like to think of myself as a mid-tier A/V consumer, but I can honestly say I have a difficult time discerning between a 4K mastered blu-ray and an upscaled standard blu-ray without doing a back-to-back comparison. Either the Denon X4200 does an amazing job on upscaling to the 4K OLED or there is something else going on. Maybe I was expecting the same visual upgrade that blu-rays provided over DVDs, but was more or less desensitized by my previous upscaling player. I did find that taking the Denon out of the path increases the sharpness (or lessens the softness) of the image and reveals some additional detail. Possibly the image is being "double processed" by the Oppo and Denon image enhancers. I will need to look into disabling the processing on either unit to be sure. With that said, the audio and overall experience from the player is on par with what I would expect from equipment at this price range. Also, app has been released now, but would have benefited during instal

Got this unit in 3 business days, as promised by Crutchfield. So far, I am impressed and very happy with my purchase. I had a Samsung K8500. The Oppo blows it out of the water! Much more vivd and deep HDR picture, better upscaling of Blu-ray and DVD, audio performance beyond comparison with any other player I have had. It is currently connected to a Samsung 2015 JS9000 65-inch, which really doesn't do justice to the video capabilities of this player. Plan to upgrade to 2017 OLED later. Looking forward to Dolby Vision. Also, the remote is great! Puts the stupid toy remote the Sammy has to shame. Just a few minor cons to this unit, nothing I can't easily live with.

Pros: HDR performance, upscaling, audio capability, quality remote, easy firmware upgrades

Cons: No streaming, CEC won't release HDMI channel until unit is turned OFF, no volume control for AVR (CEC) or digital out

I'm using the multi-channel analog outputs, so I'm loving the sound of the AKM 32bit DAC in this player. The setup options in this player cover everything you could possible need. Download the manual from here or www.oppodigital.com and read it before purchasing, it will really enlighten you about the capabilities of this player. The remote is thing of beauty. I bought it last week. Delivered promptly and well packed. Very heavy and well built player. Pakaged almost Apple like. Impressive! I plugged it and is asked for it's software update (which it took with no problem) However when installed in my audion rack It would not communicate over a 50 ft very high quality HDMI cable so I had to locate it next to my 1080P EPSON projector. It loaded my rental Dr Strange and played without any problem. Unfortunately the picture was no better than my 5 year old Pioneer. Disappointing! However the surprise is the sound. Despite a 50 ft HDMI using the sound output only HDMI the sound was amazing. The car crash scene was beyond real or as they fold reality. Even played a CD and that gave my high end music system a run for its money! The big plus with the OPPO is it does not crash like all the other players or refuse to read disks like my Pioneer. Still with the latest and greatest chip the picture is disappointing even with Game of Thrones BlueRay.

High Quality Performing BluRay Player

Oppo is a name you should remember if you are in the market for a quality high end dedicated BluRay player! It isn't bloated with Smart Streaming features rather it is just the features that only matter: Quality built and comes with an HDMI cord Stunning 4K HDR playback Lossless Audio playback Wifi/Network connected for firmware updates Simple and easy to use and setup Huge support on an array of optical media And very fast loading This player may come with a hefty price tag compared to budget players but I believe that with that prices comes quality and a pretty future proof (support for Dolby Vision via Firmware) player that easily outshines all players in the marketplace!

Pros: Stunning 4K HDR playback Lossless Audio playback Wifi/Network connected for firmware updates Simple and easy to use and setup Huge support on an array of optical media And very fast loading

Cons: Expensive

I replaced a Sony Blue Ray Player with OPPO UDP 203 Blu Ray Player. I found easy hooking up from my OPPO Lan and HDMI to Hook up my Apple T.V. By hooking up the Apple T.V. I can watch Hulu and Netflix through my Blu ray Player. I am running my system through PolkCSI Satellite and Center speakers, a Sony Multi Channeled AV receiver running through a Sony 50ex645 Bravia Television. WOW 5 Stars for the OPPO UDP 203 Blue Ray Player

Pros: Easy hook up, Great Picture. Better than every Sound

Cons: none

OPPO 4K player is the best

I don't think that an OPPO product could be anything less than a 5 star product. It does everything better than the Samsung or Panasonic 4K player does. The only quibble I have is (and this pertains to all 4K players) that there is not an option to player video at 2X with sound enabled. If you need a 4K player to go with your 4K TV, spend the extra $$$ and get the OPPO.

Pros: Attention to detail Best remote control Almost every option you desire from a 4K player Carrying case? Seriously? It has one!

Cons: None
