Easy connections

Audioengine makes it easy to integrate the S8 with your existing system. You can hook your receiver or other audio components up to the sub through its LFE or dual line-level inputs featuring both minijack and RCA connections. The sub's line-level outputs also give you an easy connection to your powered speakers. Adjustable rear-panel controls for crossover and subwoofer volume allow you to easily match up the S8 with your speakers. Plus, a variable phase control lets you tweak the sub's output for more precise bass response. And an auto-sleep standby feature turns the S8 amplifier off when you're not playing music to conserve energy.

I added these to the HD6 speakers, and it made all the difference in the world. This sub completes the sound. Highly recommended.

Product Research

Overview: The Audioengine S8 powered subwoofer is the perfect addition to your Audioengine powered speakers or as an upgrade to almost any audio system. The S8 powered subwoofer offers excellent performance for music, movies, and game. The powered subwoofer offers a compact design for easy placement. The S8 includes LFE, stereo RCA, and minijack inputs; as well as a full-range stereo RCA output.

High Power Amplifier: The S8 powered subwoofer employs a dual class A/B monolithic amplifier which is rated at 125 watts RMS and 250 watts Peak.

8" Woofer: The S8 has a super-fast, long-throw, custom 8" woofer designed for audio and home theater performance. The 8" woofer features an anti-resonant steel frame and heavy-duty rubber speaker surround for accurate low end. The 8" woofer is down-firing and offers low, tight, and smooth bass that will blend well with the other speakers in your system.

Bass Reflex Cabinet: The Audioengine S8 powered subwoofer utilizes a bass-reflex (ported) enclosure with a front-firing port for added efficiency, high volume level, an deeper bass.

Furniture-Grade Finish: The Audioengine S8 features a custom-designed and handcrafted wood cabinet with high-gloss white or satin black finish. The cabinet is made of solid 1" thick, internally braced MDF to eliminate cabinet vibrations which means distortion-free, accurate response.

Placement: This powered subwoofer is small enough to place in a corner or hide behind furniture. The subwoofer is magnetically shielded for safe placement next to your televisions. Here are three locations to try out for best performance.

  • Corner Placement: Placing the powered subwoofer in a corner usually increases subwoofer loudness. Typically the front right & left corners sound the most natural, though rear corner placement is also an option.
  • Wall Placement: Placing the powered subwoofer along a wall tends to give moderate bass performance with increased audio quality over corner placement.
  • Alongside Front Speakers: Placing the powered subwoofer alongside one of the front speakers may blend better with the overall system, but can also sacrifice some subwoofer loudness.

Note: At least 3"of clearance around the cabinet with good air circulation is recommended. Never cover the subwoofer or place it where the built-in amplifier could be covered.

Subwoofer Controls: Variable adjustable rear-panel controls for Crossover, Phase, and Subwoofer Volume allow you to easily adjust the S8's output and blending with your speakers.

  • Volume Level: The Volume control is for matching the subwoofer speaker volume to the level of your speakers. Keep the volume low when first setting up your system and then adjust to your preferred level using different music and/or video sources.
  • Low Pass Crossover: The Crossover control is used to set the subwoofer high frequency cutoff point, which is the point at which the subwoofer transitions to your other speakers. For example, if the Crossover control is set to the 50Hz mark then the sub will play all frequencies up to 50Hz. All frequencies from 50Hz and higher will then be played by the other speakers. Fine-tune the Crossover setting  (50-130Hz) by ear for the smoothest blend with your main speakers. The best setting of the Crossover control will depend on speaker placement, room characteristics, and personal preference.
  • Phase Adjustment: The Phase control is used to blend the sound of the subwoofer with the other speakers in your system. Phase is the degree to which the subwoofer speaker and other speakers are moving in and out at the same time. Once you have chosen a location for your subwoofer, try turning the Phase control (0-180°) in small amounts while you listen for the most bass from your favorite listening position. Sometimes no difference will be heard. There is no correct Phase setting and it is not uncommon for the subwoofer to sound similar at every setting, depending on your room and location of the subwoofer. If you don't hear a difference go ahead and set the Phase knob to the 0° position.

Auto Standby: This indicator LED will be Green when an input signal is present (music playing) and Red when no signal is present (power-saving standby mode). The S8 subwoofer will automatically enter Standby mode after 15 minutes when no signal is detected.

Thermal Overload Protection: The Audioengine powered subwoofer is protected by an internal thermal sensor. If it runs for an extended period of time, beyond tits designated power rating, the thermal sensor will engage and shut down the amplifier. If this occurs, turn off the power switch, lower the volume level, and wait five minutes before restarting the system. This is a normal protection feature and does not indicate a malfunction.

LFE In: If your AV receiver has an LFE (Low Frequency Effect) input or single Subwoofer output, connect it to the S8's LFE input. The S8's LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover and uses your AV receiver's bass management settings.

Dual Line-Level Inputs: The stereo RCA inputs and minijack (3.5mm) input are line-level audio inputs used for connecting your audio source's audio output (lacks an LFE or subwoofer output).  Both inputs are active, so no switching is required if you wish to use inputs from two different audio sources plugged in at the same time. You will use the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover.

Full-Range Output: The S8's stereo RCA outputs provide a full-range line-level output to powered speakers or another subwoofer. This output is active whenever a signal is connected to one of the two subwoofer inputs. The volume level of this output connection is controlled by the audio input source, not the volume control on the subwoofer.

Aux Outlet: The S8 powered subwoofer is fitted with a two-prong unswitched AC outlet (11-120VAC, 60Hz/1A)

Detachable AC power Cord: The Audioengine S8 includes a detachable 6' AC power cord.

1 question already asked

The volume on the speakers controls the sub just like your home theater. [ Rey  Feb 07, 2015 ]
Hi Jeremy, It will be just like your home theater set up. I set my sub volume to blend well with average volume on the A5's and it's fine at hi and low volume. The speakers and sub are both great! [ SCOTT  Feb 06, 2015 ]
Perhaps I can partially answer you question. My system configuration uses the Cambridge DacMagic Plus and a different speaker than the A5+ with the S8 sub. However, I assume than you will connect the Pro-Ject Debut, since it has a built-in phone amp, directly to one of the A5+ inputs. I suggest that you contact Audioengine and ask them if the RCA stereo line outputs on the A5+ follow the volume control on the A5+. If it does, which I think will be the case, use the line outputs to feed the S8 sub. [ BARRY L  Feb 06, 2015 ]
the s8 has a separate volume control which will need to be adjusted manually. that being said, it's loud. [ DAVID  Feb 06, 2015 ]
I'm a bit confused by your question because when using a turntable there is usually some type of volume control for example as in a phono preamp, a preamp or an integrated amp. I believe your A5+ will have to be used at times to control the volume. The remote control will make volume control very easy. I use my S8 sub with my Audioengine A5+ speakers and love the combination. The sub has a setting for Phase, Crossover and volume. I set it up once and have not had to do anything else other then a bit of fine tuning on a couple of occasions, which is normal for all subs. [ LARRY  Feb 06, 2015 ]
I am using a Teac desktop amplifier as my central volume control. The subwoofer matches the volume for the speakers on my desk when I change the volume. If I want more bass, I would have to adjust the subwoofer directly, but I rarely do that - usually only when I re-arrange the furniture. [ JOHN  Feb 06, 2015 ]
I am seeing the replies here and I have to honestly say I have to recheck my settings as I do not recall being able to control the sub output via the desktop speakers! You learn something new everyday! Thank you Andre and Peter! [ FRANK  Feb 06, 2015 ]
Hello Jeremy -- first I have to say I love the performance of the sub along with my Audioengine desktop speakers you will be pleased with their sub. Now to answer you -- yes you will have to adjust the volume settings and it will have to be done on each set of speakers. Having it done mutually at the same time via the desktop speakers would have been a wonderful feature! Good luck with your purchase! [ FRANK  Feb 06, 2015 ]
Jeremy, once you've paired the 8 with the 5's the master volume is controlled through the A5 main and it has a remote as well as a knob to control your system's sound level. In order to increase or decrease the sub output you'd simply turn your device to 3/4 volume and then start tweeking your sub output by the knob on its backside increase the 5's until you've reached your optimal listening level slowly adjusting the bass as you go from 1/4 volume up to it's potential output. So in short you're right on...set your gain then the master volume will control both. The sub is absolutely amazing for its size and the quality is up there. As for the Project Debut Carbon USB I know nothing as to how it manipulates your audio output from your computer I'm guessing but I went with the Dragonfly by AudioQuest. I don't consider myself an audiophile but the sound quality and how clean it is with zero jitter is awesome. It doesn't even matter what genre you're listening to it puts out a distortion and jitter free sound that rivals my trucks 6,000.00 system. Just something to think about looking at. I hope I've helped in answering your question. If I've wasted your time, I apologize and wish you luck with your system. [ SHAWN  Feb 06, 2015 ]
I have this sub connected to the A2+, and the sub volume is controlled through the A2+ speakers. This sub will work exactly how your home theater sub works. It's a solid, powerhouse of a sub too!! Hope this helps. [ PETER  Feb 06, 2015 ]
The volume on the A5+ will control the sub. I never have to touch my sub. These speakers are the best I've owned. Worth every penny. [ ANDRE  Feb 06, 2015 ]
