Our take on the iHome iW1

Wirelessly stream your iTunes library
With the iHome iW1, it's easy to enjoy your iTunes music library anywhere in your home. Through Apple Airplay (a feature of iTunes 10), you can wirelessly connect your computer, iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to the iW1 and stream your iTunes audio library to the speaker system. And that's not just your stored music, but also podcasts and Internet radio stations.

Create an instant whole-house audio system
Because AirPlay links all compatible devices together, you can place additional iW1 speakers in other rooms and simultaneously play music wirelessly throughout your home. Or use the iW1 with other AirPlay-compatible speaker systems and audio receivers to create a custom wireless home audio network.

Convenient portability
The batteries deliver hours of uninterrupted music — great for a party, or just relaxing on the porch. Just grasp the convenient integrated handle to tote the iW1 wherever you want.

Sure, you can use the included remote to control the iW1. But with Apple's free Remote app, you can also operate the system directly from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

High-performance sound
And the iW1's a pleasure to listen to. Matched speakers powered by a low-distortion amp deliver finely detailed, accurate sound — even at extreme volume levels. Sophisticated processing circuitry continually adjusts the sound, improving brightness and clarity while also delivering deeper bass.

iPod and iPhone docking option
When the iW1 is placed on its charging base, you can also connect an iPod or iPhone directly to the system. Just use your player's charging cable. When you plug it into the iW1's USB port, the system will automatically charge your device. And you can play music directly from your connected iPod or iPhone through the system.

From the review iHome iW1 AirPlay wireless speaker system: One portable system that's at home with my music

"On the whole, I enjoyed my time with the iHome iW1. It was easy to set up, and once the battery was fully charged, I could take it just about anywhere in my home (even a little outside of it). Sound quality was very good, and I especially appreciated the improvement the iW1 brought to my basement work area over the old AM/FM CD player currently residing there. Not only better sound, but a better variety of music!"

Sounds great, when it works

EdJ from New York, NY on 6/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice looking and sounding speaker. But always had intermittent problems with it dropping off the network, especially if it was moved. Even when other devices have 5 bars, the iW1 would drop. I am not sure if that was an AirPlay issue or an iW1 issue; either way it was a problem. Then after a year, the speaker will not "boot". Will not even work using the auxiliary jack; is essentially useless. iHome wants $100 to repair it and offers a 30 day warranty on repaired units; I am going to pass on that. AirPlay sounds good but you must be on your home WiFi and it only works with Apple. Avoid iHome and Airplay. Look at Bluetooth speakers

Pros: Nice Looking Sounds good when it works

Cons: Unreliable Expensive

terrible, shipping it back!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I carefully followed the instructions, and I had it working on my wifi network... for a minute. Then it stopped working. No matter how many times I power cycled this thing, it just wouldn't respond anymore. The ipad/iphone setup app is terrible also. No useful feedback. This thing is a weird device -- it has two separate power buttons for instance. I think this company just tried to do too many things (battery power, wifi, ipad software, etc) and hasn't really worked out the bugs. I'm tired of struggling with someone else's buggy stuff so I'm returning it. --steve PS I'm a software engineer, so I know a few things about software and devices like this...

Pros: has a lot of features, but they aren't any good if it doesn't work

Cons: doesn't work! -- see my review

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up, works great! The sound is good. Love the built in battery/ charger. Just grab it and put it in whatever room you're hanging out in. Battery lasts for hours. Airplay is so cool. By far the best bang for the buck!

Pros: Airplay, built in battery

Cons: If you're looking for super high quality sound, this isn't for you. If that's the case, spend more money on something less portable. But if you're looking for good sound and the most features in an affordable unit, this thing rocks!

Works and sounds fine

Easy to setup, as reliable as AirPlay, sounds better than it should.

iHome iW1 - Not ready for prime time...

George from West Orange, NJ on 1/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my wife for Christmas. She was really excited. But it was nothing but problems form out of the box until I sent it back to Crutchfield. The software would have to be installed every time she went to connect her iTouch. Exchanged it for the Bose Bluetooth without any issues from Crutchfield. Do yourself a favor - Just go with the Bose. So much easier.

Pros: None....

Cons: Did not work....

Works great.

Pros: Good quality, portable, looks good, easy setup.

Cons: Will not work with iPhone 4S, Crutchfield made this known in advance of purchase. Still waiting on Apple to issue a update to fix this!

Great iPod dock. I had my iPod for about 2.5 years and was waiting of a real nice dock to come along. When I found this was I just fell in love with it! It cost an arm and an leg but it was worth every cent of it! :)

Pros: -Amazing sound -Supper loud (I've not yet even found a time to play it at full vol) -Small and portable -GREAT battery life

Cons: none!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the IW1 for my teenage son who listens to his IPod all over the house and outside as well - so neded a portable speaker system. Great battery life and nice features and portability is a breeze. However, the bass response is not impressive as you max out the volume. Returned the unit for the Bose SoundDock Portable System.

Pros: Great styling and portability.

Cons: Sound quality diminishes as you increase the volume.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first iHome I got was defective. Could not get AirPLay to work even after calling the company. However.....The best electronics store in the world (Crutchfield) sent me a new one and from day one it has worked perfectly. Very versatile, can me moved outside and everywhere in the home. Would not have been satisfied until Crutchfield exchange the original one.

Pros: Good Sound for such a small speaker and the Air Play works perfectly even if you're not just listening to music but also movies and live TV.

Cons: Haven't had it long enough to address any Cons.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very expensive piece of junk. Connecting it to the wireless router was successful but quirky. The biggest problem is that it simply does not stay connected to the wireless router over time. We bought this to use with iPhone/iPad accompaniment music for piano practice. It is a very good concept. When it is time for the kids to practice piano, we airplay the music to the speaker. The problem is that most of the time the speaker has lost connection to the wireless router. No problem, right? We have to take the speaker down from the bookshelf, unplug it, turn the power off, turn around twice to the left, touch our nose, and turn the power back on. Connection successful. We can plug our iOS device into cheap speakers with considerably less effort. Don't buy this device if you expect it to work when you need it to work.

Pros: Good idea

Cons: Doesn't stay connected

We're using the iW1 as a remote speaker for a new iMac loaded up with our iTunes song library. We played Christmas music in the background during the holidays, and the speaker worked great. You can control volume and playback directly on the speaker, with the included small IR remote or from the remote iMac. Occasionally you are locked out from playing/pausing/skipping from the speaker or the remote; we haven't figured out the cause or exact pattern of behavior, but it appears to be an issue with iTunes that will hopefully be resolved in a future revision. Sound is surprisingly good for such a small speaker, thought stereo separation obviously suffers. Very crisp, no audible trace of distortion at reasonable playback levels. It's a kick to be able to lift the speaker off its charging base and tote it around the house to wherever you want to have music or audio. Particularly great if you like to listen to Internet sports or Talk Radio - crisp, clear audio with no static or dropouts. I expect iHome and Apple to follow with additional AirPlay products during 2012, the technology is elegant and has great potential.

Pros: Overall design, sound quality

Cons: Occasional lockout of playback controls, relatively expensive

Can you hear me now?

Chris from Cleveland, OH on 12/23/2011

I was really looking forward to this, but unfortunately am having quality issues with Airplay. Although I have a 12gb connection speed, it still drops out quite frequently (without even having any other devices taking up wireless data!). I'm wondering if this is the problem with a lot of Airplay devices. I may return it and go Bluetooth.

Pros: Rechargeable battery, portability

Cons: Wifi reliability

Sounds great but....

Rob from Niskayuna, NY on 12/22/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like several other reviewers the first one I received did not work but Crutchfield promptly replaced it. The second time around it took a week to finally connect to my WI-FI network (I had to walk away for several days). The issue was always connecting to to finalize the connection as the instruction say. I was connecting via my PC (using Windows 7 and Internet Explorer) and could never get the web site to load. Out of desperation I called Crutchfield Tech Support and they suggested I try FireFox. After two tries I was able to connect. Once that was done the sound quality is great and the device us easy to use. Streaming from iTunes is fantastic. I like the Bongiovi DPS feature, adds great depth. However, when I stray too far from my router (maybe 20 feet) the signal drops and I have to place it back on the charging base to restart the palyback. Maybe a router upgrade is necessary. So I would say proceed with caution on this, my experience so far has been mixed; if you can get it running you'll enjoy it.

Pros: great sound quality, wireless, Air Play compatibility

Cons: set-up was very difficult, wireless connectivity frequently drops

Great concept, so-so execution

Shawn F from Washington, DC on 12/10/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first unit I received was defective, but Crutchfield's awesome customer service came through and I had a replacement in just a few days. Out of the box, the iW1 is stylish and looks and feels solidly built. The carrying handle is hidden from view, which is nice, but it does feel like there's not enough of a "hook" to grasp. I like the way the unit simply rests on top of the charging base, with no cables to mess with when you want to move it. Setup of the iW1 was less than Apple-simple, as my network uses MAC address filtering and the instructions need a little work in that area. It took several attempts to get everything working; particularly annoying were the iW1's boot-up period, very slow communications with the network, and cumbersome reset process. Once I got the iW1 up and running, I found the sound quality to be quite good. However, I'm encountering problems with the Wi-Fi frequently flaking out for several moments at a time, and I'll probably end up disabling the Wi-Fi and just tethering the iW1 to an AirPort Express via a 1/8" stereo cable. That said, as with anything wireless your mileage may vary.

Pros: Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth; portability; appearance.

Cons: Setup; instructions; Wi-Fi connection reliability.

Love This Speaker !

TomInLA from Hollywood on 11/21/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of research before buying this because I wanted a great sounding wireless speaker for under $400. THIS is IT ! The sound is full and doesn't sound like all the iPod speakers I've heard previously. It definitely fills the room with great music. It's easy to set up, the remote is great, the display is great. I could go on and on. I am so happy with this purchase.

Pros: EVerything !

Cons: I can't really think of what I don't like. I mean it COULD be smaller but then again maybe it wouldn't sound as fantastic if it was. If you want an Airplay speaker, this is the one.

First one was a dud, replacement was fast though, and so far, love it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is phenomenal, I really didn't expect that to be the case. If you're an iPhone, iPad, iPod, iWhatever user, you'll love this product. Airplay is the single best reason for using iTunes and the Remote application on any of your Apple devices. The iHome iW1 is recognized as a speaker and works flawlessly. I don't use the battery much because mine sits right near an outlet. But it is a stroke of genius for the simple charging station; no lining up prongs, just place the iW1 right on top of the charging base and voila!

Pros: The sound is phenomenal! Portable/lightweight, ease of use, simple battery charging, and can also run directly connected to an outlet.

Cons: The direct connect network setup was a little awkward. Mine kept saying it was "trying to connect" to the network, after I provide my home network password. It looked like it never did, but it actually had. Once it had a local IP address I renamed it with ease via a web browser.

Imperfect but sweet - like any member of the family

Steve M. from Springboro, OH on 10/14/2011

I bought this is as a gift for my wife, who finds that attaching an iPod and wading through playlists and such is too complex and too much work. Voila! Beyond some technical obstacles I attribute more to my own thick head, the iHome iW1 performs as advertised. The sound quality may not satisfy a true audiophile (which I'm not), but it's not bad by any stretch. Playing through your computer's iTunes is more reliable, but less convenient; playing through your iPod, the reverse is true. If the iPod is a great distance away (meaning more than 20 or 30 feet or blocked by something), the sound may cut out - at least that's my experience. Again, it may be due to something else entirely. Otherwise, there is just a small lag time between hitting "Play" and the iW1 coming to life, and I've yet to experience any buffering or skipping as it plays. The handle on the back makes the bottom jut out as you carry it and overall feels a little iffy, so I'd recommend both hands on it when transporting.

Fantastic! Easy setup with the iPhone App. The sound is incredible when in the Bongiovi DPS mode, it certainly exceeded my expectations. Wifi range is very good on my Netgear N300 router. I have used the speaker in every room of my home and outside on the deck for about four hours and never had any reception issues. Plays well without any problems on my iPhone,iPad and PC using iTunes.

They verify what’s in the box, check the owner's manual, and record dimensions, features and specs. We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.
