Our take on the Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10

Paired with an efficient set of bookshelf speakers such as the Cambridge Audio SX50, the AM10 is perfect for small to mid-sized rooms. It's relatively compact and easy to operate, with a transparent, richly detailed presentation that will please your ears for hours at a stretch. Fatigue-free sound — that's one of the unsung benefits of high-end gear.

Simply great stereo sound makes a comeback

Over the years, as surround sound took over the living room, and music went mobile, high fidelity got left behind. Now, a new breed of refreshingly simple home audio components is taking us back to the future. And there's no better example than the Topaz AM10 integrated amplifier from Cambridge Audio.

The AM10 gives you plenty of inputs for old-school source components, such as a CD player or turntable. Conjure up scintillating sound from today's digital audio sources when you add the acclaimed DacMagic Plus digital-to-analog converter. If you crave deeper bass than you can get from bookshelf speakers, you can easily connect a powered subwoofer, such as Cambridge's Minx X200.

Did not meet my expectations. Returned to Crutchfield.... Not a problem.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not an expert on audio equipment, by any stretch of the imagination and am often disappointed with overly technical jargon-driven explanations. I needed a new integrated amp, however, as my sound with my budget rate amp was very distorted. I found the Topaz AM10 on line and it seemed to be what I needed. It was only when I spoke to the Crutchfield phone rep that I was confident enough to make the purchase. Without a lot of technical talk, he assured me that this would be the perfect product to go with my speakers in my mid-sized living room. He was 100% correct. The sound is brilliant, both very clear and well defined. I chose it over the comparable NAD due to price. I am in love with my new integrated amp and I am in love with Crutchfield. Thanks for the help!

Truer sound than expected

Mark from Athens, Georgia on 8/27/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced a Proton D540 integrated amp that I bought from Crutchfield in (ahem) 1987 ... one channel kept dropping out and I figured nearly three decades was enough to ask of it. That amp served me so well - it DJ'd high school dances, took me through college and all over the country. It was well worn and I had come to love the warm, rich tones it produced. Finding a replacement was going to be a huge chore. I read a lot and waffled more, eventually deciding in this. The sound is very different and, at first, I wasn't in love. But the more I listen, the more I feel the Proton was heavy handed in how it built a sound stage - a lot of bass and a lot of treble and I just got used to it. What I first heard as not being a full sound I now think is a more accurate sound. I listen to mostly folk music so the clarity is really appreciated on this. (I'm feeding it into a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 30 bookshelf speakers in my home office.) The other big thing I wanted was a phono input as I had recently dugout my old turntable. And this is why I'm at four and not five stars - the phono stage just feels a little flat. I can't come up with a different description. What sounded bold on the older Proton just lacks some richness. I've even wondered if there's something wrong with it and ... well, maybe there is?

Pros: Clean, crisp, accurate sound

Cons: Lacks a little punch in the phono stage

Excellent value with a couple of minor flaws.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound in an affordable and compact unit. The remote control does everything but Power on and off, which I find a little annoying. And the volume registers in negative dB, so the when you turn up the volume, the negative number gets smaller approaching 0, and larger when you turn down the volume. I do not understand that either.

Pros: Good value.

Cons: Remote does not control Power On/Off.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only had it a short time. Wanted an integrated amp for my office to drive small but clean sounding speakers. The best statement you can make about an amp is that you do not hear it. I do not hear this amp, only the music. I bought this over NAD because I wanted a phono input. Have yet to use it, but will do so soon.

Pros: Phono input. Clean simple design.

Cons: None yet

Great amplifier! Does exactly what I wanted: allows me to hook up a quality turntable I've had for years and play all my old vinyl 33s from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Nice little amp

Warm sounding, perfect little amp for my home office. I like the no frills approach.

Pros: Good value, phono preamp sounds great.

Great little amp

John262 from Elko, NV on 4/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sounding amp and it looks beautiful sitting on my shelf. I am using it to play audio from my bluray player and satellite receiver and digital files stored on my computer. It drives my vintage.ESS HD1500 6 ohm speakers quite nicely. It doesn't seem to be any less powerful than my old 75 watt Onkyo amp that I replaced. It is curious that the remote won't turn the unit off and on, but I suspect that it might be a safety feature. Overall I would highly recommend it

Pros: Nice looking minimalist appearance Good build quality Plenty of power to drive my less than efficient speakers

Cons: None

Stunning Sound

Jasper from USA on 2/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first impression of this amp is wow! The AM 10 provides a stunning big sound stage with plenty of bass and highs. I am not sure why no one has commented on the AM 10 before but my impression of this amp is that the AM 10 is a great value with a stunning sound stage and a great integrated phono stage. My Debut III turntable sounds fantastic hooked up to the AM 10. CD playback is also excellent. Great recommendation from Rhonda the Crutchfield sales advisor.

Product Research

Overview: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier is equipped with a full discrete 2-channel power amplifier. The AM10 integrated amplifier can support a wide range of external audio sources thanks to 5 rear-panel analog stereo inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input. The Cambridge Audio AM10 is equipped with binding-post speaker terminals to connect a pair of loudspeakers and a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack to plug-in a set of headphones. An IR remote control is included for wireless operation.

Stereo Amplifier: The Cambridge Audio AM10 employs a true 35 watts RMS x 2-channel fully-discrete power amplifier (into 8-ohms). The amplifier can handle impedances between 4 and 8 ohms.

Rugged Chassis Design: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier has been carefully designed with a brushed aluminum front-panel, rigid metal chassis, and internal bracing to prevent resonance and improve sound quality.

Toroidal Transformer: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier utilizes a custom low-flux toroidal transformer for audiophile performance.

LCD: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier features a front-panel LCD for the display of information, such as the selected input source, volume, and tone/balance level.

Volume Control: The Cambridge Audio AM10 features a front-panel rotary dial to increase or decrease the level (-80 to 0) of the sound from the speakers outputs and headphone output of the unit. You can also use the included remote control to adjust the volume level.

Tone Control: The Cambridge Audio AM10 offers Bass (100Hz) and Treble (10kHz) controls which are adjustable from -10 to +10dB. The unit also allows you to balance the unit's speaker outputs left-to-right (+/-10).

Remote Control: The Cambridge Audio AM10 comes supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the integrated amplifier. The included remote control will also operate playback function of the Cambridge Audio CD10 CD player (779CD10, sold separately).

5 Rear-Panel Inputs: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier is equipped with 5 rear-panel analog stereo RCA inputs (MP3/Aux, CD, tuner, Phono, BD/DVD). These analog stereo RCA terminals are suited for any line-level source.

Phono Input: This input has a built-in phono stage. Turntables fitted with a moving magnet (MM) or high-output moving coil (MC) cartridge can be used.

Note: Low output moving coil types (<1mV and normally 10-1,000 ohm load impedance) cannot be directly connected.

Front-Panel Input: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier features a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for temporary connection of a portable digital audio player.

Note: Connecting an audio device to the front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input will override the unit's rear-panel RCA auxiliary input.

Record Output: The integrated amplifier's analog stereo RCA record output lets you connect a tape recorder or CD-burner. The unit's record output is not affected by the volume control or tone adjustments.

Binding Posts: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier is equipped with 4 binding-post speaker terminals to connect a pair of bookshelf or floor-standing loudspeakers. The binding-post terminals will accept bare wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The binding post terminals are color-coded (red/black) to distinguish positive and negative.

Headphone Output: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone socket for connection of a set of headphones. The amplifier's speaker outputs are muted when headphones are connected.

Note: Headphones with an impedance of between 32 and 600 ohms are recommended.

Detachable IEC Power Cord: The Cambridge Audio AM10 integrated amplifier includes a detachable 5' IEC power cord.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I felt this to be a quality item. And the price was awesome, the fact that it has a phono input was the deciding factor. Very pleased with my purchase and crutchfields service is the best in the business [ John  Nov 09, 2016 ]
good reviews [ john  Jul 07, 2016 ]
I wanted something of good quality but without overkill on features. I expect to play audio CDs (someday MP3/WMA CDs), lps, and streaming audio from the Internet. And probably this year to listen not via speakers but via Bluetooth and hearing aids. I still need the Bluetooth devices, but this simple amp has the inputs and outputs to accept them. Support for two speaker systems. Minor detail: it tickled me to see that the rear connection labels appeared both right side up and upside down. [ Stephen  May 31, 2016 ]
70s analog sound quality, great for vinyl [ James  Mar 19, 2016 ]

Not sure about that. But you should with the right connections. Sorry for being so vague [ John  Apr 21, 2017 ]
has a phone pre amp input good basic integrated amp [ shamil  Apr 21, 2017 ]
I would think you could hook it up to the output terminals where you would have the entire output of the amp not only the phono. So you would be able to send whatever comes out of the amp to your bluetooth speakers. Hope this helps. [ shamil  Dec 27, 2016 ]
There is no fm tuner. This amp was purchased to use only with a turntable [ John  Oct 20, 2016 ]
No, this unit does not have a built in tuner. [ MARTIN  Oct 18, 2016 ]
It does not. It was upon being told that all tuners in integrated amplifiers are not digital tuners that I chose this amp/preamp. I have connected a digital tuner to it. [ Stephen  Oct 17, 2016 ]
I have played lps through this amplifier. If anything, the sound is even better than with the integrated amplifier I replaced. [ Stephen  Oct 17, 2016 ]
I have not used this amplifier to power a turntable, so I can't give a specific answer to this question. However, I would assume that it has an A to D converter that would provide a good output. I am satisfied with this amp in terms of listening to CDs. Sorry I can't be more helpful. [ Richard A.  Oct 28, 2015 ]
I don't know if this is the BEST choice, I haven't compare much but its definitely doing a good job and I am very satisfied with it. only use it for my record player. [ anne  Oct 27, 2015 ]
I bought this amp specifically for a turntable and I am very pleased with the build quality and the sound. Great price also [ John  Oct 27, 2015 ]
I would suggest editing Jim Richardson's overview on this product as he states you can easily connect a powered sub-woofer. like the Minx X200. I'm sure it was an oversight, bit it is misleading. [ Matt  Aug 25, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Topaz AM10 does not support a connection to a subwoofer. It works best with really nice bookshelf speakers in a medium-sized room. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
