Cambridge Audio Sonata AR30

Solid power and performance

The AR30 delivers a conservatively rated 40 watts per channel that sounds like quite a bit more. The foundation of any amplifier's performance lies with its power supply. The AR30's substantial toroidal transformer provides plenty of rock-steady current for when your music's dynamic peaks demand it. Micro surface-mount circuit technology reduces signal paths to the absolute minimum. The result is a rich and highly detailed soundstage that will bring your music to life.

Digital music from your iPod and more

The AR30 comes with a separate dock for your iPod or iPhone® with built-in noise-canceling circuitry to ensure pristine sound quality. The dock charges your player while you listen, and it enables control through the included remote. You can also add an optional Sirius Satellite Radio tuner for heaps of original and exclusive programming, most of it commercial-free.

This Sonata fits the bill for a very compact receiver. Quality of build is excellent and the features, including the ipod dock, are better than expected. I am using this with a Bose Acoustimass 5 systems and am pleased with the performance. Of course, Crutchfield made it easy.

Pros: Size, features, quality.

Cons: 25W per channel might not be enough for some.

Pleasantly Surprised

Having never heard the Cambridge Audio receiver, I was really impressed the first time I turned it on. I selected it for two reasons. 1.) It has a very compact footprint. It is going into a bathroom we are doing a total renovation on (torn out to the studs) and so I really don't have room for a large full size receiver, 2.) and also, with an additional tuner, you can receive Sirius stations, a definite plus for my wife and me.

Pros: Many more features than I expcected. Sounds wonderful, and will still get plenty loud enough for me, even if it is only 40 watts. (Just for perspective: The first receiver I ever bought (in 1975) was a Marantz and only had 50 watts (but was considered a pretty robust output at the time). It also weighs 5 times what the Cambridge weighs, takes up 3 times as much room and doesn't have near the features of the Cambridge. (The Marantz still works fine 38 years later) But the Cambridge rocks.

Cons: Okay, so I gotta get pretty nit picky to find something I don't like about this receiver: Here it is: The clock, from what I have been able to find out so far, can only display time in a 24 hour, military style format. For example, if it's 10:30 PM, the clock states it as 22:30. I much prefer the AM / PM designation, but, it does prevent one from accidentally setting the alarm (yeah, it's got an alarm clock on it) for PM when you meant to set it for AM. That is very unlikely in this case.
