Our take on the Cambridge Audio ID100

And remember: that improvement in sound quality doesn't just apply to your stored tunes. If you enjoy streaming audio on your iPhone or iPad from services such as PANDORA® Internet radio, Rhapsody, or LastFM, you'll hear a noticeable difference when you play them through your system's speakers.

Top-notch sound from your favorite Apple device

Want to get the best possible sound and images from your iPod, iPhone, or iPad? So does Cambridge Audio — that's why they built the iD100 dock. It bypasses your player's internal audio circuitry and relays the unprocessed digital signal to your receiver or external DAC (digital-to-analog converter). This kind of connection lets you get more detail and richer, fuller sound from your favorite music.

Works for streaming audio sources, too

And remember: that improvement in sound quality doesn't just apply to your stored tunes. If you enjoy streaming audio on your iPhone or iPad from services such as PANDORA® Internet radio, Rhapsody, or LastFM, you'll hear a noticeable difference when you play them through your system's speakers.

The iD100 has a variety of audio outputs so you can make the best connection to your system. In addition to coaxial and optical digital outputs, it also features an XLR balanced digital out so you can connect to compatible high-end audio gear.

iD100 black

Video output that's up to your system's demands

The iD100 features a video minijack on its back panel, which can be used to feed either a composite or component video signal to your TV using the supplied adapter cable. Use composite for older TVs that are limited to this single-cable connection. Or, if your TV supports it, switch to the three-cable component video connection to enjoy photos and videos from your player with all the rich color and detail they contain. You can even make an S-video connection with compatible TVs using an optional mini-to-S-video adapter cable (not supplied).

Cambridge's DacMagic (sold separately) takes full advantage of the ID100's clean digital signals, for killer sound.

Add some magic for a match made in heaven

The ID100 dock pairs beautifully with Cambridge Audio's acclaimed DacMagic digital-to-analog converter (sold separately). This combo delivers pristine sound from your music collection. Use it to feed your favorite pair of powered speakers, and you've got the ultimate desktop system — just drop in your portable Apple device of choice. Or connect it to your A/V receiver in your home theater setup.

Works as advertised

Wardi from Glendale, CA on 2/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does everything it is supposed to. Simple design and remote works well. Sound quality seems good to me initially - I've only had it hooked up for a couple days - I have yet to really put it to the test sound quality wise, but it seems good so far. From the iD100 I'm running an XLR cable to a GDA600. Sounds great so far! I don't have any experience with the video functionality.

Pros: Simple, straight forward design. Good basic, cost effective doc to get a digital signal from.

Cons: None really.

too many problems

After reading all the reviews i thought these people probably dont know how to hook this unit up well its not that hard but im already on my second one and it doesent work either it looks really nice but does not sinc up with the ipod touch and i really could not tell that much of a difference not the dollars worth for sure i have bought a bunch of equipment from crutchfield but im going to have to return this im like some of the others on this unit very disapointed

Pros: looks sweet

Cons: to bad it doesent work as well as it looks

JerryW from Philadelphia, PA on 7/16/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ID100 is an interesting unit and an audiophile's dream. Its a sleek and unobtrusive design blend right in with any contemporary system. However, there are nuances that are annoying. If you interchange any ipod, iphone, or ipad, a unique rubber grommet must be used each time. While I havent lost one yet, its inevitable. I am also on my third unit due to connection problems. It simply stopped working. Hopefully, the third will work like a charm. But I have my doubts....

Pros: Sleek, compact design

Cons: Engineering. Use of a different rubber grommet for each style of ipod, ipad, or iphone AND connectivity. Cost.

Excellent player for iPod Classic.

GeoffT from Aptos, CA on 6/18/2012

For a few years I have been listening to parts of my music collection using headphones and various iPods. Recently I bought an iPod Classic 160G to hold all my collection of CDs. This it did, but the audio was poor, unlike its smaller capacity predecessor. After a review of the situation online, I bought the Cambridge dock and connected it via an audio coax cable to my Arcam receiver. The results have been outstanding. The ease of use and ability to control the playing through the remote just add to the pleasure. I still use my CD player but only with SACDs.

Pros: Sounds great by using the digital signal from the hard drive after bypassing the iPod DAC and amplifier. Easy to control with supplied remote. Uses the iPod as a server. Well made.

Cons: Price. But then we would always like everything for less.

Awesome Dock

KYFHO69 from APO, Japan on 5/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this dock and a Nu Force HDP at the same time. The combination of these two items is phenomenal. I'm not quite sure what type of setup some of the other reviewers were using but if you use this as intended you will not be disappointed. I used my iPod Touch (4 Gen) and the sound quality is absolutely fantastic! Cambridge definitely did not use cheap parts when they designed the ID100 - the build quality is really solid. I had originally planned on purchasing the Wadia 171i but it seems a little large for a dock (and was $100 more). I was able to pack both the ID100 and my Nu Force HDP in a small Case Logic bag for travel (I will be in Africa for 6 months and need entertainment) with room to spare. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and have no problems recommending the ID100 to anyone in the market for a quality dock.

Pros: Build Quality Sound Size and portability Ease of Use

Cons: None

Elton from Florida on 3/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this after careful research but must say sound quality was so poor, worse that my ipod raw sound. Cambridge is known for quality product , but this is not one Firstly it is difficult to fit the ipod on the dock and have to keep pressing it to get it fit. the first one I had was so poorly fit that I had to return it for exchange. the sound quality is so poor that I refuse to even listen to it

Pros: Looks good and remote actually work

Cons: Poor fit, horrible sound quality

Cambridge audio ID100 - dissapointing

Phil D from Easton, MD on 2/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have multiple Cambridge Audio products I enjoy. I did not expect to be disappointed with this product, once a product type only available from Wadia, however at this point I would have to recommend you save up the extra money and get the Wadia i171. Using iPod 120/160Gb classics playing back lossless AIFF music files, many tracks just sound bad....worse than the raw analog output from the iPod. I have no comment (or interest) on video output or performance.

Pros: Size/form factor (compact). Remote functionality, reasonable price, multiple (simultaneous) outputs

Cons: Often, Poor sound on lossless AIFF files.

Cambridge Audio ID100 is a great music source!

Steve from Portland, OR on 2/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My iPod was loaded with lossless files only. In the end it sounds as good as my CD transport. The optical interconnect was used first but a bit was lost -- due to jitter? Digital coaxial to my DAC fixed it -- the sound is very open and precise. I find that I listen to more titles than before because it is so convenient.

Cambridge Audio ID100 - disappointments(s)

Joseph - Pa from Harrisburg, Pa on 1/18/2012

Yes, as I found from research this unit IS a quality built component however 1-Though connected to reference audio system THINKING I can listen to IE. Youtube items the unit will not show the video on an IPAD2-a big negative! The screen says I am connected to my TV which I am NOT. 2-The REMOTE - only the Play, Repeat track, Mix track, FF, Charge buttons of the ID100 work with IPAD2. I was expecting the Menu button to work as described in the manual and most importantly the ability to use the REMOTE to scroll through the tracks to play the music I desire - such is not the case. I had to use the IPAD2 to select an album - then sit using the ID100 remote to press the 'play' button for the music to play. This can not be?!!!! 3 - I went on the Cambridge Audio site to discover there is not a phone number to discuss this issue. Maybe to at least find out IF I have a defective unit. The video posted by Cambridge Audio fails to show Remote control functionality-another big mistake on their part. Note: The manual does not provide a phone number either. The only recourse You have after paying so much for their product is to send an E-mail then WAIT for a response. No WAY! 3-On the site their is an excerpt about UPDATING the Firmware. OK-maybe this is what is needed to allow EXPECTED Remote Control functionality with the IPAD2. But the FIX only works with WinXP & Win 7 not Vista. Caution here! This is a RETURN!!!

Pros: Music sounds OK!

Cons: Seems to be an overpriced unit MERELY for connectivity but WITHOUT the functionality expected from this unit. What's the point in having to function mostly with your IPAD2 set atop a shelf to only have the ability to use a PLAY button to listen to music? Then get up to choose a different Folder or Album?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding Ipod Dock. Four Stars because Dock has output for video on screen display, but is not set to function (hopefully it will be in the near future ). Contacted them, they say that is Apple's fault and if Apple doesn't come out with a fix, then they will (?).

Hands-on research

Product Research

Overview: The Cambridge Audio iD100 digital audiophile dock for iPod enables you to play your iPod, iPhone, or iPad's stored music and video files through your home stereo system (via digital connection) and connected television (via composite/component), while also charging the Apple device's battery. The Cambridge Audio iD100 bypasses your iPod, iPhone, or iPad's DAC and feeds a pure digital signal to your home AV receiver for a realistic, dynamic sound.

iPod Dock Connector: The Cambridge Audio iD100 digital audiophile dock for iPod features an integrated Apple dock connector which allows you to connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. The iD100 supports audio playback, video output, remote control, and charging of your docked Apple device.

Note: The iD100 includes 4 rubber dock adapters to accommodate your iPod nano, iPod classic, iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. Airplane mode is recommended for iPhone.

Digital Add-on Dock: The Cambridge Audio iD100 digital audiophile dock for iPod is a universal add-on iPod dock which can connect to any home stereo system that features a digital (optical/coaxial/XLR) input. The iD100 will also connect to your television via composite or component video. The iD100 can also be fed to Cambridge Audio's external digital-to-analog converter (DacMagic Plus, sold separately) for even higher fidelity sound.

iPod DAC Bypass: Traditionally, iPod docks feature an analog audio output, usually via a RCA connection. The final sound quality of any iPod dock with analog connections, is ultimately limited to the internal DACs in the iPod, iPhone, or iPad. As these internal DACs are designed for portable use, they are not designed provide a high quality source in a Hi-Fi/AV system. The Cambridge Audio iD100 overcomes this sound quality barrier by totally bypassing the iPod, iPhone, or iPad's internal DACs, re-clocking the audio data, and providing a low jitter, high quality pure digital audio signal from the iPod, iPhone or iPad; which you can then send to your own dedicated Hi-Fi DAC or AV receiver which will have been optimized for analog conversion. This process squeezes the best possible sound quality out of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

Master Clock Circuit: The Cambridge Audio iD100's master clock circuit minimizes audio jitter and guarantees the highest quality digital music from your iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

Digital Audio Output: The Cambridge Audio iD100 digital audiophile dock allows the digital output of any audio files your iPod, iPhone, or iPad supports; including lossless files for high-end sound quality. The Cambridge Audio iD100 will digitally output music files, podcasts, audiobooks, and apps stored on your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. The iD100 accesses the audio on your iPod, iPhone, or iPad digitally; providing a bit-perfect, low-jitter digital output via a coaxial, optical, or AES/EBU (XLR) digital connection.

  • S/PDIF Digital Outputs: The Cambridge Audio iD100 is fitted with both S/PDIF coaxial and toslink digital outputs to connect the iPod dock to your AV receiver.
  • AES/EBU XLR Outputs: The ID100's AES/EBU (XLR) balanced digital audio output allows connection to high-end home audio gear or professional audio equipment.

Video Output: In addition to playing audio, the Cambridge Audio iD100 can output video from supported iPods, iPhones, or iPads. Video playback is possible via the iD100's composite or component video output. When a video-enabled iPod, iPhone, or iPad is docked and playing; video is routed to the dock's composite/component video output and output to your connected television.

Note: The dock's video output does not provide an on-screen display.

PC Sync Interface: The Cambridge Audio iD100's USB (type-B) connection allows convenient and simple syncing of your docked iPod, iPhone, or iPad to iTunes. This is not an audio input.

Remote Control: The Cambridge Audio iD100 digital audiophile dock for iPod includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of your connected iPod, iPhone, or iPad. Using the IR remote control, you can navigate your Apple device's menu and select audio/video files by Playlist or Category. You can also select playback functions, such as Play/Pause, Fast-Forward/Rewind, Skip (previous/next), and Shuffle/Repeat. You can also continue to use the clickwheel or touchscreen to control playback.

Note: The iD100's remote does not fully support the Apple iPad and does not allow you to browse audio/video files. The included remote will only support basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast-Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next) of the iPad.

IR Input: An IR input (3.5mm) is provided that allows IR remote control commands to be received by the iD100 from custom install systems.

Battery Charging: The Cambridge Audio iD100 charges your iPod, iPhone, or iPad while connected. You can disable battery charging to improve overall sound quality.  If your iPod, iPhone, or iPad has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it and the on-screen display will read "Please remove iPod".
