Nice tripod for the money. The way the legs adjust to different angles is pretty neat, and the locking mechanism seems pretty stout. The legs extend and lock well. I've never seen a high end ball head but this one seems fine to me. Not a professional quality tripod but more than adequate for the average photographer.

Pros: Seems sturdy

Good backpack tripod

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good little tripod. It is surprisingly sturdy for its size and all the components are well made and fit together nicely. The only complaint I have is the ball head it comes with is basically useless unless you are using a point and shoot camera. I got this to take on a backpack elk hunting trip. I wanted a lightweight tripod on which to mount my spotting scope. I need a tripod that would allow use of my spotting scope in the prone position and this one delivers. I also wanted the tripod to be able to fold up small enough to fit into my pack without much fuss. I replaced the ball head with a vanguard ph-21 pan head and really like the setup. I'm 6' tall and this tripod is a little short to use standing but is great for sitting, kneeling and prone use. I like the simplicity of the design it just works. The cam style leg locks work well and don't squeal like my old tripod that I dread using because the sound is horrific. The two section center column is nice for getting low to the ground. I like the clicking mechanism that holds the legs in one of three angles from standard tripod width to almost perpendicular. My friend has a vanguard tripod and it is a hassle to get the legs spread out wide because of the frustrating pinch latch that they employ. The Velbon design is much better.

Pros: Lightweight Sturdy Low profile Small collapsed size Good leg locks Smart design

Cons: Cheap ball head

Product Research

Overview: The Velbon Sherpa 4430D is an aluminum tripod, equipped with the QHD-43D ball head, a quick-release platform, a two-piece center column, and lockable 4-section legs. The 4430D comes with a zippered nylon carrying case.

QHD-43D Head: The Sherpa 4430D's QHD-43D ball-type head is equipped with the QB-62 Quick Release platform and a 1/4" tripod socket. The head features a single tension adjustment for smooth movement and more control. There are two slots to allow you to tilt the head 90° in either direction for taking photos in portrait orientation. Two bubble levels and a shoe lever on the head ensure the camera is level perfect.

4-Section Aluminum Legs: The 4-section telescoping legs feature quick lever leg locks for maximum stability. The legs are tipped with non-slip rubber feet.

Leg Span Adjusting Knob: The leg angle can be adjusted to one of three positions: Standard, Semi-Low, and Full Low. The bottom section of the two-piece elevator column needs to be removed in order to angle the legs to the Full Low position.

Extra 1/4" Screw: The elevator column has a 1/4" screw on the bottom that can be used to mount the camera underneath the tripod. This is helpful for macro photography. An optional hook can be attached to the screw for hanging the camera bag, which stabilizes the tripod with the additional weight.

Elevator: The center column, or elevator, comes in two sections. The lower section can be removed when the leg angle is set to the Full Low position. The elevator has a 9.76" slide range, and must be manually raised and lowered.
