Our take on the Echobox Audio Explorer

My first impression of the Echobox Audio Explorer? It's going to be tough getting this portable audio player into a stadium! The resemblance to a hip flask is remarkable — and deliberate. Its ergonomically curved hardwood casing fitted easily in my hand and felt comfortable in my pocket. The Explorer's sound was just as remarkable. Whether listening to high-res tracks or compressed MP3 files, I heard clean, natural sound with plenty of detail.

A flask for FLAC?

Echobox Explorer and Dock

Like the Echobox itself, the matching dock (available separately) is crafted from a solid piece of hardwood.

High-quality components in a solid wood body

A solid block of hardwood is hollowed out to make the Explorer's casing. The top and bottom are capped with durable machined aluminum. Inside is a powerful quad-core processor for fast, accurate operation. A Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz digital to analog converter (DAC) delivers smooth sound.

The Explorer has a peak output of 300mW, so you can get the most out of your high-performance headphones. Just for comparison, we've seen pro headphone distribution amps with half that amount of output.

Simple operation

The player's 3.5" color touchscreen is easy to navigate. Echobox uses the Android 6.0 OS for reliable, simple operation. The top of the “flask” is a control knob. Press it in to turn on the player, or rotate it to control volume.

Wi-Fi for more music options

Built-in Wi-Fi lets the Explorer wirelessly connect to the internet, so you can access a world of music from services like TIDAL, Spotify®, Pandora®. And if you subscribe to their high-quality streams, this player can render all the details you're paying for. You can access other sites such as YouTube, and play high-resolution audio downloaded from sites such as HDtracks.

Stream with Bluetooth and DLNA

Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream stored music to compatible wireless speakers and headphones. The player's ideal for use with high-performance wireless powered speakers, such as the Audioengine B2 or the MartinLogan Crescendo.

Use an Android™ smartphone, tablet, or PC? The Explorer also has DLNA for advanced streaming options.

Expandable memory

The Explorer features 64GB of internal flash memory. Its microSDHC card slot can accept a 200GB card. That gives you a maximum capacity of 264GB — plenty of room for those large high-res audio files.

Wait for version 2.0

Bill from Charlottesville, VA on 12/8/2017

I am sorry, but I have to be brutally honest on this one. The player itself is good. Wifi is terrible and super frustrating. Playback is actually only listed as 8 hours on the one page "getting started" insert, not 16. Very little documentation on the product itself. Crutchfield actually has more than their own website. They make it sound like you have streaming options, but you can't download apps and the wifi is so bad that it will drop standing right next to a hotspot. Tried using the pre-loaded Tidal app to stream hi-def music, but that was a bust thanks to the awful wifi.

Pros: It's a decent player

Cons: Wifi (which should be one of it's pros). Lack of technical documentation. No earbuds or optical cable included, just a short micro usb cable. Cost when you consider the lack of advertised features.

This Flash-Shaped Player Packs a Serious HiFi Punch!

Ashley from Los Angeles, CA on 10/25/2017

I first heard of this company when they launched a campaign on IndieGoGo, and it didn't take long for me to back their project. After a long awaited development, I could not have been more excited when my Explorer arrived! Fresh out of the box this thing is absolutely beautiful. The solid hardwood feels excellent to hold, and the knurled volume knob is a very nice, and rare, addition that is lacking from almost every modern piece of tech. The operating system is smooth, and give that it is simply stock Android it's very easy to use (I even have a few games installed lol). Of course, though, being a HiFi player, you are probably wondering how it sounds! Well, simply put, it is a rare treat of pure sonic bliss. Ok, well, maybe that wasn't a simple explanation, but there is nothing simple about the sound of the Explorer. Complex layer upon rich, enveloping, wide spread complex layer sums up the soundtage, with a familiar "warmth" to it's neutrality that feels beautifully similar to the feeling you get when listening to vinyl on a nice system. Overall, this is hands down my favorite portable player I have ever owned, and I couldn't recommend it more!!! Well done Echobox :)

Pros: Expansive & detailed soundtage, gorgeous design and construction, long lasting battery, easy to use, WiFi and BT.

Cons: Gets slightly warm after extended use (probably due to the big amp), WiFi range could be better.
