Our take on the Google Home Mini

Here's a space-friendly, cost-effective way to get voice control into any, and every, room of your house. The Google Home Mini speaker gives you hands-free access to the Google Assistant in a super-compact design. This palm-sized speaker weighs less than half a pound and still offers much of what we love about the original Google Home

Put Google Assistant in every room

Here's a space-friendly, cost-effective way to get voice control into any, and every, room of your house. The Google Home Mini speaker gives you hands-free access to the Google Assistant in a super-compact design. This palm-sized speaker weighs less than half a pound and still offers much of what we love about the original Google Home

Just say, "Okay Google," or "Hey Google," and the Google Home Mini's built-in far-field mic is ready for your next question or command. Set an alarm, play a podcast, or even make a call to someone in your phone contacts — the number of tasks grow every day.

Get helpful answers from Google

The Google Home Mini also makes it easy to stay in the know. Weather, traffic, stock information, sports scores — Google's vast wealth of knowledge is one question or command away. Simply talk to your Google Home Mini in a conversation-level voice and it will delight you with news, facts, and even a bit of humor.

Pro tip: For a laugh, ask "Hey Google, what is the meaning of life?"

My favorite use for voice control? Has to be music

Of all the cool stuff you can do with the Google Assistant, I get the biggest kick out of playing music. Imagine a DJ that will actually take your requests! The Google Home Mini can stream from several top music services. I set Spotify® as my default music service, so I can request by song, artist, or album.

If you get more than one Google Home Mini, you can group them together and play music in other rooms throughout the house. It will even give you voice control over powerful audio gear with Chromecast built-in — like A/V receivers, sound bars and powered speakers.

I use the Polk Mag Mini sound bar for my main TV setup. So if I say, "OK Google, play the Black Crowes in the den," then "She Talks to Angels" will pump through the room.

Quick, guided setup

I've been burned by the promise of "easy setup" so often, that I always hesitate to write the phrase. The last time was my daughter's "easy-to-assemble" swing set that took me seven fuming and frustrating hours to complete. Setting up Google Home took me less than seven minutes.

Google Home Mini with Google Pixel II phone

Download the free Google Home app to your smartphone (not included) for easy setup.

First you plug in the Google Home Mini, then download the free Google Home app on your Android™ or Apple® device. The app will walk you through setup and get the speaker on your home Wi-Fi® network. From there, you can lose the phone if you want and control this compact speaker by voice.

Voice recognition for personalized service

The Google Home Mini can recognize up to six different voices. Each person in the household can sync up their calendar, music services, and phone contacts to their voice. So when I say "Hey Google, call work," I'll get Crutchfield. When my wife says the same phrase, she gets the medical spa.

Control compatible smart devices

The Google Home Mini can control compatible smart home devices from WeMoPhilips HueSamsung SmartThingsNest, and more. Setup is done through the Google Home app.

I synced up my Logitech Harmony Elite to the Google Home app. So whenever my kids hide or lose the remote, I don't have to tear up the house looking for it. I can just say "Hey Google, tell Harmony to turn on ESPN," and watch SportsCenter.

Roon-compatible for serious music lovers

The Google Home Mini is also compatible with Roon, a subscription digital music player you download to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. It gives you multi-room audio playback for all your Chromecast-compatible devices and more. Roon accesses your digital music collection from your iTunes library or NAS drive. It also works with your TIDAL subscription. Roon lets you do deep dives into your music, showing artist bios, photos, reviews, and lyrics. Roon can also suggest other artists and songs based on your selections, making it easy to discover new music you'll enjoy.

Love the Ghome mini

Audrey from Medford, MA on 10/31/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the ghome mini for everything from telling me the weather, telling me my calendar appointments, playing music, etc. The only thing I really dislike is that I can't play music from my itunes. Alexa can't hold a candle to the ghome; ghome is WAY better at understanding questions.

Pros: Good sound, compact, pretty color, sleek design, useful product

Cons: The only thing I really dislike is that I can't play music from my itunes.

Software works well. Easily connects with your other smart appliances and such. Sound quality is not as good as Homepod.

Awesome little gadget. Great sound and very responsive. Never thought I'd get one of these, but so far I'm impressed.

Much smarter than Siri or Alexa.

Little Price, Little Sound...but google assistant

Crutchfield customer from Elmhurst,IL on 7/7/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Google assistant gets the 5 stars, the sound barely gets 3 stars. You get what you pay for with the mini.

Pros: Google assistant

Cons: Sound works fine, but similar to the iphone8 or Samsung s9 phone.

Fun Product

Skip from Council Bluffs, IA on 3/29/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Already have a Google Home in my living room and wanted to add a mini to my bedroom so I could control my lights, coffee maker, etc, from two places. The sound quality is really very good for such a small item. I can listen to podcasts in total comfort before I go to sleep and can wake up to a nice sounding alarm or music in the morning. Super simple to set up and it worked seamlessly with my Google Home. I highly recommend this product and it makes a great gift too.

Pros: Easy to set up, fun to use and the size is perfect for a small room.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Decent sounding office Assistant

Rogelio from Saipan, CNMI on 1/30/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the Size, its sounds neat - better than Echo dot. Good for office room or cubicle size speaker and a bench side assistant - it even have Bass and Treble Equalizer, and like its big brother - has more clearer Vocals (compared again to Echo dot).

Pros: Sounds better than Echo Dot

Cons: No Audio Output jack and No Bluetooth transmission, only to Chromecast Audio.

Great Product

Dr. J from N Little Rock, AR on 1/11/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product has very good sound quality. You can use it with the Nest thermostat, the Ring doorbell, the harmony TV remote, play music throughout the whole house, use it to broadcast messages throughout the house like an intercom, set a timer, add events to your calendar, and so much more. It constantly learns. We now have 4 and have been very pleased.

Pros: Sound and so many valuable uses, doesn't take up a lot of space in the room, easy to set up

Lots of capability at a decent price

Mike from Endwell, NY on 1/5/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definitely a nice alternative to the standard sized and priced Home. Sound quality is a touch better than the Amazon Echo Dot equivalent although I would not use either for music. This unit's price enables me to put more smart-home voice control points in different rooms which previously wasn't feasible.

Pros: Low price = more voice controlled areas Small footprint Value

Cons: No external audio jack Sound quality Missing bluetooth

Useful, easy, limited

Adi from Austin, TX on 12/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy entry into handsfreee google assistant in multiple rooms. Easy to set up, link with google music, spotify, etc. Good value for the price. Clear sound and listens well. No audio output jack for better sound with external speakers - requires chromecast for external sound.

Pros: Easy to set up, link with google music, spotify, etc. Good value for the price. Clear sound and listens well

Cons: No audio output jack for better sound with external speakers - requires chromecast for external sound

Works well

Erik from Sharpsburg, GA on 12/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Integration with other smart products like Hue and Nest. The speaker is great for the bathroom, and an office. I gave 4 stars as it will not connect Bluetooth with other speakers. I knew this going in, but seems silly in this era. It does chrome cast, but that requires more equipment.

Pros: Easy set up. Great integration.

Cons: No Bluetooth

I have both a DOT and now a Google Mini. I say the Google Mini is the winner hands down. Better sound definitely and Google Assistant much better than Alexa.
