Praise for the Paradigm PW AMP from Home Theater Review

The PW AMP is a wonderful little Class D amp with a smart design and wonderfully dynamic, detailed, nuanced performance, along with excellent bass management and room-correction capabilities... more than enough power to drive great big honking tower speakers.

Paradigm PW AMP calibration mic

The PW AMP includes a calibration mic that connects to your computer to automatically adjust your speakers to your room.

Tons and tons of music choices

Play-Fi lets you play music wirelessly from your phone, tablet, or PC. You get easy access to music stored on your computers, music servers, and mobile devices — including high-quality lossless files. You also have access to popular subscription-based music services, along with over 37,000 Internet radio stations.

An RCA analog input on the back lets you connect an "oldie but goodie" stereo component, like a CD player.

Anthem Room Correction (ARC) helps shape the sound

Paradigm has included a calibration mic with the PW AMP. Plug it into your laptop's port and follow the step-by-step on-screen instructions. Anthem Room Correction (ARC) software will measure how sound reflects off walls, ceilings, and furnishings. The PW AMP uses powerful built-in processing to correct the in-room response of your connected speakers, all wirelessly. You'll get the best sound for your surroundings.

Sounds great, but crippled by PlayFi software.

Jeronimo from Nicholasville, KY on 12/16/2017

I am a professional audio installer and recently sold one of these to a client at their request. The unit itself sounds incredible for its size, but is crippled by the PlayFi software. If you've ever used Sonos, Heos, or MusicCast then you will be incredibly frustrated by PlayFi and it's shortcomings. The other reviewer experienced the same issues we had with ours. The problem is only solved by downloading an update that must be loaded to the unit via thumb drive to update the PlayFi software. Also the unit must be manually updated via ARC from a computer NOT the mobile version to properly update the hardware. Both processes are absurd in a world of simple auto updates. As with any PlayFi device: one company makes the hardware and one the software so getting support is very frustrating. Most likely you can get hardware support via phone but no phone support for PlayFi. You find yourself stuck with how nice the hardware company wants to be that day or how knowledgeable they are about PlayFi in general and in an argument about whether issues you might have are hardware or software related and who is responsible for them. If you need power buy a stand-alone player from Sonos, Heos, or MusicCast and a separate amp. If 50ish watts a channel will suffice buy any of the above 3 companies all in one player/amp units. DO NOT buy a PlayFi device.

Pros: Sounds good

Cons: Everything else.

Excellent potential, flawed execution.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product from Crutchfield in January. On paper it is an excellent piece of kit, the ARC calibration software is outstanding and makes the most of any speaker and room combination. The amp itself is plenty powerful and the small footprint and understated design allows it to blend into any room decor. My frustrations with this device begin and end with the Play-Fi software. My wife uses an iPhone while I have an Android device, neither can reliably connect and stream music with any consistency. When it works, the result is tremendous, but more often than not we end up staring at our phones wondering if it will work this time. Rebooting the device and/or our phones will sometimes provide a workaround. My Anthem AVM 60 also has integrated Play-Fi support and exhibits none of these issues. If I were still within the return window for this product, I would probably send it back. As it stands, I try to enjoy it during the times it works and temper my frustration when it doesn't. Buyer beware.

Pros: ARC calibration software Small footprint Powerful amplification

Cons: Play-Fi implementation is spotty at best despite several software updates. No remote

  • Class-D Amplifier: The Paradigm PW Amp utilizes an Anthem Class-D stereo amplifier for pure, clean, dynamic sound that will make your digital music collection sound amazing. The amplifier is rated at 50 watts RMS x 2-channels @ 8Ω or 100 watts x 2-channels @ 4Ω, with a dynamic rating of 200 watts Peak x 2-channel.
  • Stereo Analog Input: The Paradigm PW Amp is fitted a stereo RCA input for connection of a CD player, Phono preamp, or other analog audio device. This input can only be played back at the amplifier location and cannot be used for multiroom.
  • Speaker & Subwoofer Output: The PW Amp is fitted with four spring-post speaker terminals to connect a single pair of speakers. The spring-post terminals will accept bare-wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The wireless network amp also features a mono-RCA subwoofer output with a fixed 100Hz low-pass crossover for connection of a powered sub (sold separately).

Anthem Room Correction (ARC) Technology: Paradigm's exclusive Anthem Room Correction (ARC) Technology uses an exclusive calibration microphone and advanced DSP algorithms to quickly and easily optimize speaker performance in any space. In just a few easy steps the microphone measures sound output, compares it to scientifically optimal response curves, and instantly adjusts your wireless speaker's output for perfect sound.

Note: To use this feature, you will need to download the ARC 2 Software v1.1.3638 onto your Windows PC running Windows 7 or 8 (32- or 64-bit), and connect the included ARC microphone to a free USB (type-A) port on your compatible Windows PC using the supplied 6.5' microUSB-to-USB cable.

Premium Wireless (PW) Series: The Paradigm PW Amp wireless network amplifier is part of Paradigm's Premium Wireless (PW) Series, a collection of wireless products that allow you to control what you want to listen to from your smartphone, tablet, or computer and stream it wirelessly to any room. You can start with one Paradigm Premium Wireless (PW) series product and then add more throughout your home or office.

DTS Play-Fi Wireless Technology: Paradigm's Premium Wireless (PW) Series of wireless speakers, amplifiers, and adapters employ DTS Play-Fi wireless technology for wireless sound that is reliable and high-quality. DTS Play-Fi combines DTS audio and WiFi (802.11 g/n; 2.4/5.0GHz) wireless technology to wirelessly stream high-definition "lossless" audio with no impact on sound quality. DTS Play-Fi will stream pure, bit-for-bit, lossless audio, for uncompromised quality sound; up to 16-bit/48kHz. DTS Play-Fi has a range of up to 100' from your wireless router.

Note: All DTS Play-Fi enabled products work seamlessly together, so there's no hassle adding more speakers, or choosing more than one audio brand (like Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, Phorus, Wren, etc..) in your home.

Wired or Wireless Network Connectivity: The Paradigm PW Amp is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (10/100) LAN port to hardwire the amplifier to your home's network router. The PW Amp also features built-in WiFi (802.11 g/n; 2.4/5.0GHz) for a wireless connection to your home network.

Simple Setup: There are two methods for connecting the Paradigm PW Amp to your home network. You can perform WiFi setup via the free DTS Play-Fi App on your Apple iOS/Android mobile device or Windows PC (this setup allows you to connect multiple Play-Fi device at once to your network). You can also use the WPS button on the amplifier if your wireless router supports WPS (this setup only allows you to connect one Play-Fi device at a time to your network).

DTS Play-Fi App: Download the free DTS Play-Fi App onto your Apple iOS (6.0+) device, Android (2.2+) smartphone/tablet, or Windows (7/8) PC for easy and convenient management of your music from your mobile device or computer. From the app you can initially set up the Paradigm Premium Wireless (PW) series amplifier, as well as add, link, and control all your PW series and DTS Play-Fi components. You'll be able stream music directly from the system's built-in music online services, or music on your mobile device or PC to multiple Premium Wireless (PW) series and DTS Play-Fi enabled products throughout your home. The app lets you browse your music by artist, album, genre, or title; and provides album art. You can choose to play the same music in each zone or a different song in each room.

Variety Of Sources: Paradigm's Premium Wireless (PW) Series supports a variety of music sources.

  • Mobile Device (Apple iOS & Android): You are able to wirelessly stream your music files from your music library on your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (2.2+) device to the PW Amp through the free DTS Play-Fi app.
  • Online Music Services: From the free DTS Play-Fi app on your mobile device or computer, you can share and listen to Pandora, Spotify Connect, SiriusXM, TIDAL, Amazon Music, Songza, Rhapsody, and Internet Radio.
  • Computer Audio: The Paradigm Premium Wireless (PW) Series wireless amplifier is DLNA compliant for playback of various music files stored on your Windows PC (7/8) or DLNA-certified NAS drives connected to your home network. MAC OSX computers and laptops require third party software to be visible on the network (Twonky, Plex, Servio etc.) as they do not support DLNA. Use the free DTS Play-Fi app on your mobile device or computer to access these music files.
Supported Music Files: The Paradigm Premium Wireless (PW) series and DTS Play-Fi support music formats such as MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV. The system will recognize music files up to 24-bit/192kHz and wirelessly stream these files at up to 16-bit/48kHz (CD quality sound). Some down-sampling may occur to ensure virtually lossless distribution throughout a home network.

Maximum Number of Rooms/Zones Supported: You can play the same source in each zone or a different song in each room. Eight separate wireless source devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), each with its own source, are supported simultaneously and any wireless source device can stream to eight DTS Play-Fi playback devices. Due to the bandwidth limitations of most wireless networks, no more than 16 wireless DTS Play-Fi products on a single WiFi network at one given time is recommended.

Front-Panel Controls: The Paradigm PW Amp features front-panel, push-button controls for Power On/Off, Source Select, Volume Up/Down, and Mute.

AC Power: The Paradigm PW Amp operates off of standard household current using its integrated power supply and detachable 6.5' AC power cord.

Mounting Options: The PW Amp wireless network amplifier can be table-top mounted using its integrated rubber feet.

We do not currently offer their powered sound bar. On Paradigm's main website, they do state you can use their PW600 or PW300 powered speakers as wireless surrounds but make no mention of the using the PW Amp to power external surround speakers: [ Ryan  Dec 06, 2017 ]  Staff
