Overview

Our take on the Music Hall MMF-2.2

Unwind with warm analog sound

If you've never experienced the warm and natural sound that vinyl is famous for, the MMF-2.2 is a great place to start. This solidly built Music Hall turntable makes an excellent choice for seasoned audiophiles and vinyl newcomers alike who want to get outstanding sound quality without spending a fortune. Music Hall's minimalist design philosophy focuses on the features that benefit sonic performance — no unnecessary bells and whistles here. With its simple, elegant appearance and high-gloss piano black lacquer finish, this table will look and sound fantastic atop your audio rack.

High-quality construction for top-notch performance

The MMF-2.2's sturdy MDF chassis rests on vibration damping rubber feet that provide a solid, low-resonance foundation. Its heavy steel alloy platter spins on a high-precision stainless steel and bronze bearing assembly for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The motor mount and belt drive system effectively isolate the motor's vibration from the chassis to prevent noise from being transferred to the cartridge. An external AC power supply helps further reduce any traces of interference or hum. Finally, the table's rigid, one-piece aluminum alloy tonearm provides superb tracking ability to faithfully follow the grooves of your albums, and includes a silicone-damped lift for gently raising and lowering the arm — protecting both the stylus and your records.

Quick and easy to assemble

Music Hall knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the MMF-2.2 comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force, anti-skating, and platter speed are all it takes to get this player primed and ready to deliver spacious, detailed music.

I am relatively new to current turntables. I have found this model easy to set up, relatively intuitive (for those mechanically inclined), attractive, and just enough difference (anti-skating weight!) to make it interesting. It sounds great after a week of use with no issues.

I believe the turntable is beautiful, but in shipping, the cartridge protector came off and the crystal was damaged by the packing wrap. I am fairly certain the sound has been affected because brand new vinyl has too much crackle and lacks pureness.

Don't consider myself an audio file, I just love to listen to my old records. This thing sounds amazing compared to my last turntable. Relatively easy to set up even though the fishing line on the anti skate seems a little weird. But, everything worked perfect the first time and I've been enjoying it ever since. Very happy with this product.

Pros: Sounds amazing and looks cool

Cons: Minor amount of set up

There is no better table for the price Crutchfield offers! I purchased this along with a Pro-Ject tube S (also unreal price) and everyone is amazed & how well my vinyl sounds. It also looks great with the piano finish. Incredibly happy with my purchase as I thought I was going to pay almost twice what I did!

Pros: Looks & sounds great and easy to setup

Cons: RCAs not removal but they come with a ground so that's a plus

a very nice little table for the money. The cartridge it now comes with is a Magic 2 (Ortofon OM 10) which is quite nice for the money too. You can do better but you'd need to spend a lot more. If you just want to listen to music of good quality vs analyse it, this is the one. Used part of the savings to do a couple of very worthwhile upgrades. A cork or leather mat helps a lot as the felt one supplied tends to build up static. For another $40 bucks you can by a Skogsta cutting board at IKEA ($13) and 4 vibrapod #2's and give it a very, very stable foundation. So equipped it sounds a lot better than any sub-thousand dollar turntable has and right to and WAY better than most tables you might have owned back in the day....

Nice Turntable

John from Lake Charles, LA on 2/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The music from this turntable sounds great as it uses the Ortofone cartridge. I was having some buyers remorse after I ordered this as I was thinking I probably should have gotten a Pro Ject table. Well, this is a Pro Ject turntable; it has Pro Ject all over it. It is good looking and simple to operate. My first turntable set-up in about 30 years was not difficult once I really read the directions; I wasted a lot of time because I mis-read the part where you turn the whole counterweight and not the scale to set the tracking force. It was all there, I just didn't get it at first. I'm pleased overall, but there is a problem that I should probably address with Crutchfield; the platter came warped from the factory. I loathe the thought of having to ship the whole turntable back to see if they can get a flat platter. I'm not an audiophile so I don't hear any distortion and it doesn't usually cause a problem. The platter isn't any more warped than some of the records I own, but with some records the warped platter can cause the very bottom of the cartridge to graze the surface of the record. It is a perfect storm of cartridge design, warped platter, and warped record when it happens. I have the tracking force dialed back to the very least possible, and it seems to have stopped, but if I wanted more tracking force for sonic reasons, I'd be out of luck on some records. Like most new things you can buy today, it seems like the quality control on this turntable is suspect.

Pros: Sounds Great Simple Operation Set-up easy when directions read in detail Looks Great Good Price

Cons: Warped Platter Cartridge can drag

great sound...........but

Don from Aberdeen, WA on 2/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the mmf-2.2 has amazing sound but............there are minor issues such as the counter weight falls off on a regular basis, the felt mat always sticks to the record when you switch album sides, you have to walk very carefully around it or it will skip, and finally the phono cartridge gave out after one year of minimal play time. if having to replace the phono cartridge every year this will be an expensive hobby to enjoy vinyl records

Pros: very good sound

Cons: phono cartridge gave out after one year of minimal play time, felt mat sticks to records every time you switch sides, and the counter weight falls off on a regular basis, and you have to walk on egg shells when you get near or else it will skip. I should have waited, now the price is about half of what I paid. however it does look pretty sitting there!! LOL

Incredible value for price!

Ramiro from San Francisco, CA on 1/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an awesome buy! I was very hesitant due to the fact that it was the previous model, but the price was right. It was delivered in excellent packaging with no chance of any part of the component getting damaged. Set-up was easy and the instructions were very clear. The cartridge included was the Magic Hall Magic 2 and not the Tracker 2 as mentioned in the description at Crutchfield, but it is basically an Ortofon Super OM10. After about 30 minutes of setup, I was ready to play my first LP, which is my favorite, Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. The stereo separation and sound staging were superb! You could hear Gilberto's guitar so clear and vivid, it sounded like he was right there! When Getz solos come in the tenor sax is clean and smooth like butter. Wow! I have the 96/24 digital copy of this album and I thought that was amazing, but the LP is so much better, so warm and comforting. Next I tried a used copy of U2's The Joshua Tree. On my previous turntable, the album sounded good, but you could hear some of the pops and crackles of it's age despite constant cleaning. On the MMF-2.2 I was shocked how clean the album sounded. The beginning of "Where The Streets Have No Name" came in almost silently. The midrange and treble of this album came in clear without any harshness. I have since spun quite a few albums, both new and used and the MMF-2.2 plays everything I throw at it with sound that is equal to turntables costing much more. This was a great buy!

Pros: High quality audiophile turntable. Simple to setup and use. Excellent soundstage and stereo separation. Very precise tracking. Beautiful looks and build quality.

Cons: Removable RCA cables would have been a plus (now part of MMF-2.3), but for the price there are no complaints!

A little cumbersome to operate. You must take platter off to change belt speed position to 45. With 1/2 speed recordings of 45, this is a pain. Very good sound 3.5 stars

Smooth sound

George from Minneapolis, MN on 1/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an old Dual semiautomatic turntable but hadn't realized how much I was missing until I tried the Music Hall through a nice set of B&W towers. The sound was rich and warm with great presence. The set up only took about 10 min. The anti skating weight on a string is a bit odd but quite simple and effective. I miss the automatic arm return at the end of the album but the sound makes up for it. This is a completely manual turntable. On off switch to rotate platter and stop each time . As an old guy, I played a lot of vinyl gowing up but now it is a treat so the manual ritual has become part of the process. Music magic 2 cartridge is a midlevel otofon MM type which is easily upgradeable. Only complaint is the cheap felt platter pad. They could do better than that.

Pros: High quality. Good looking unit. Great sound. Otofon cartridge

Cons: Totally manual process will bother some people Cheap record pad incongruous with the quality of the product

My old LP's sound great

Morgan from Quilcene, WA on 12/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It plays LP's just fine, which is what I needed. But I'm an old guy, and this takes me back to the Heathkit era in a lot of ways. I can't believe that you have to put it together yourself. And to change speeds you have to manually change the belt. Also, positioning the anti-skating weight was a challenge for my shaking hands and aging eyes. But, once you've got it together, it's just fine. I'm just never going to try to play 45's.

Pros: It's great once it's put together.

Cons: There's a surprising amount of assembly required and some of it requires some relatively fine motor skills.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Turntable to replace an old JVC from the 80's and all I can say is wow... what an upgrade! The biggest difference I could note is; The speed is dead on and super stable and all the vocals and instruments seem very lifelike and have proper soundstage. This machine is in another league all together than the 10 or so other Turntables I have used.

Pros: Arm, Motor, Great sounding cart/stylus, Dead quiet operation

Cons: None for me

I bought this to replace a Marantz that died before I feel it should have. All I can say is WOW! It has great sound, looks sharp and is solidly built. Buy this turntable you will not be disappointed. Although I do want to add it is not an automatic turntable. Doesn't matter to me , this thing really sounds awesome. From Beethoven to Slayer and everything in between you will be happy with your purchase. Thank you Crutchfield for great prices and fast shipping and thank you Music Hall for making an awesome product.

Pros: Everything

Buy This Turntable!

Stove from Bel Air, Maryland on 6/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this as a scratch and dent and nearly returned it. The needle was bent and I couldn't find all the parts at first. But I got everything straighten out and replaced the OM-10 stylus that comes with the MAGIC 2 cartridge with an OM-20 and I couldn't be happier. Had I received the deck with the Tracker cart., I would have replaced it anyway and spent much more money than I did for the OM-20. I also replaced the felt mat with a cork mat. If you're on the fence about an entry level TT or spending a little more for the next step up, definitely spend the extra $100 or so because it is worth it . In my case I was replacing a dept store Pioneer that I bought 20 years ago.I have a lot of vinyl from the the 70's and 80's that I took care of and nearly all of it sounds amazing. Now I see why people say vinyl sounds better. I bought a nice NAD cd player earlier in the year and the TT does sound a few ticks better. Even if your records are not the in the best of shape, the improvement in sound will more than make up for it. The realism, the attacks of the notes, the timbre of the instruments, and the space between them makes for an very enjoyable listening experience.

Pros: I read a review where someone said that the cuing wasn't damped, but mine is. The upgrade to the Magic 2 cartridge (made by Ortofon) is BIG plus because the stylus can be upgraded. Never got to hear the OM-10, but loving the OM-20! So long as you like the cartridge, you may never need to replace it. Great value for the money. Easy to set up.

Cons: I get a slight mechanical vibration (I guess) which seems to vary from one record to the next, and sometimes I don't hear it all. I don't know if it's from the deck, the motor, or maybe even electrical in nature, but it is very slight when I can hear it and not really a nuisance being that I listen open air. Maybe it's just another level of surface noise I haven't been able to notice before. Some would probably not like the hardwired audio cables, but they are fine for me.

ShepM from Spartanburg, SC on 1/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Elegantly simple with great sound! I bought this turntable to replace a 10-year old D.J. style table that developed pitch control problems. I shopped with several specific features in mind. First, I didn't need all the switches, slide controls and lights my previous record player had. I just wanted to play LPs at 33-1/3 on a quality turntable that didn't cost $1,000.00. I also looked for one with belt drive to isolate the motor from the platter. The DC motor with separate AC power adapter design of the MMF-2.2 virtually eliminates any extraneous noise, like 60Hz hum. All I hear is what the stylus and cartridge pick up from my vinyl collection. Also, at 17lbs, the turntable is solid and stable. Setup was fairly straight-forward. Just need to be cautious around the business end of the tone arm. The anti-skate device is sheer genius. Love the pure, rich sound!

Pros: Audiophile sound, well designed, good looking, solid.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first received a my Music Hall MMF-2.2 turntable, it had a serious hum in the right channel. After making sure the problem was not caused by improper set up or a faulty ground I called Crutchfield support and was quickly shipped a product and given a return authorization for the defective unit. When the second unit arrived it set up perfectly and I was playing my old vinyl from the 70s in no time. Problems will arise from time to time, but Crutchfield did a fine job of making sure I was satisfied in a timely manner.

Pros: Great Service! Beautiful sounding product.

Cons: Defective product the first time out. Alls well in the end though!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am 53 and became an ardent classic rock listener in the mid 70's. Vinyl records were my favorite medium and amassed a large record collection. I contiuned listening to vinyl throught the 80"s up until the advent of CDs. I was reluctant to switch to CD, but like most people I was intriqued with something new. So I turned to CDs, sold my turntable at a garage sale and gave away all my records. Thankfully, I did keep my Sansui stereo receiver. About five years ago, while visiting a local CD store, I noticed used vinyl records for sale. I looked through the records for sale and began to reminiace. At that point, I thought how great it would be to start listening and collecting albums. I still had my receiver but I needed a turnatable so I bought an inexpensive turntable and began collecting records. As my records collection began to grow, I decided to upgrade my turntable. After reviewing as much information available, I decided to purchase the MMF 2.2 because it fit my price range and was supposed to have quality sound The MMF 2.2 was easy to setup and took about 30 minutes after carefully following the user's maunal. After completing the setup, my first impression before playing a record was Music Hall's "minimalist design philosphy" was accurate. This is a basic turntable with no frills. The sound quality of this turntable is amazing. The sound was crisp and clear. I played the song "Royal Scam" by Stealy Dan and could hear every instrument. Clearly amazing.

Pros: Amazing sound quality and easy setup

Cons:

The description does say the Tracker, but that is incorrect. The Magic 2 is basically the Ortofon OM 10 Super which is a pretty good phono cartridge. The Tracker is a Goldring Elektra cartridge made by Goldring for Music Hall. They both are similar in sound quality and performance. [ Ramiro  Aug 19, 2017 ]
It comes with a Tracker cartridge. [ Philip  Aug 19, 2017 ]
Mine came with a magic 2. I got it in November of 2016. [ Morgan  Aug 18, 2017 ]
Two; 33 and 45 [ JIM  Jul 18, 2017 ]
The Music Hall MMF2 haw two speed (33/45 rpm). You need to manually adjust right under the bladder, very easy. Great product! [ Ken  Jul 12, 2017 ]
Just two, 33 1/3 and 45. The belt has to be repositioned to get 45rpm [ Ralph  Jul 11, 2017 ]
It has 33 and 45. You have to remove the platter and move the belt on the spindle to change speeds. [ WESLEY  Jul 11, 2017 ]
Oops! It does have 45 RPM as well! [ JOSEPH M.  Jul 11, 2017 ]
One speed: 331/3 RPM. [ JOSEPH M.  Jul 11, 2017 ]
Two, 33 1/3 and 45. This is definitely no frills, so you have to move a belt to a different pulley to change speeds. Not a casual undertaking. On the other hand I haven't got any 45's anyway... [ Morgan  Jul 11, 2017 ]
These open-box items have minor cosmetic damage. They may be missing non-essential accessories. In some cases the manufacturer's accessories have been replaced with generic equivalents. The manufacturer's warranty applies. Our 60 day satisfaction guarantee still applies as well. The manual claims that you can. However, It's a DC controlled motor so I guess the transformer figures it for you. [ Steven  Oct 10, 2015 ]
Not that I am aware of. [ Michael  Oct 09, 2015 ]
