Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this RV GPS unit to replace a Magellan which had hit the tile floor in the coach one time to many. Therefore my analysis will contain some comparisons with the Magellan. The 7720 is a very busy unit and takes a lot of time reading the online manual. The quick start is only basic. As with all GPS units your trip is voice guided. The male and female voices are OK but some of the pronunciation is difficult to understand. The Magellan was crystal clear. At intersections you get a 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile countdown and then told to turn. This is good but I miss the chime on the Magellan which left me with no doubt that I was at the turn point. One nice thing on the Rand is the superimposing of the exit lanes on a multi lane exit from a freeway. This is good and leaves no doubt about your position for a clean exit. .The POI is much like any other units but has the addition of RV parks of all kinds. State, Federal, private etc. The RM also has multi point trips which I like and the Magellan didn't have. The Rand McNally is a nice unit. It's quite in depth and takes some study and practise to get the most from it. On reflection it's a bit pricey but I had a friend who raved about his so what the heck! If you like simplicity and ease of operation there are simpler units available for less but if you're a techno type you won't have any problem using this unit. I bought this unit from Crutchfield who had excellent pricing. If you want one -shop around.

Pros: Lots of information and record keeping for RV maintenance

Cons: Pricey. Needs some study and practise to use properly

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We had already owned a 5510 when we decided to buy a 7720 for the WIFI features, especially the gas price screen. The learning curve was steep on the 5510 until I figured out almost all the icons on the screen were buttons leading to other screens and abilities. Luckily the 7720 has almost exactly the same features and screen design, so basic operations were easy to use. The WIFI connection however was harder to come by. Our new Virgin mobile MIFI hotspot overdrive pro with WPA2 security enabled could not connect to the GPS. A call to Rand McNally tech support yielded the fact that the RVND 7720 only recognizes WPA security. We found that we had to drop security altogether to connect easily. I'm not real happy about that. Anyone within range of our RV can now suck up our fairly expensive internet time. Other than that, the ability to avoid tight and impossible situations with our class A usually pulling a trailer, plus the available warnings about speed, turns, toll booths, etc, are a VERY desirable abilities. The nicest feature we've found is the ability to change and/or add destinations on the fly with no trouble. The campground list, closest Wal-marts, FlyingJ's/Pilots, etc. and ability to find the next rest areas or service plazas are great features also. Being able to choose a male voice is also a plus. Using the car option makes it more useful. The new weather feature is a safety plus. If you do more than one RV trip a year, this is definitely the unit to get.

Pros: Almost infinite adaptability and customization, weather feature including wind speeds, gas price pages, voice choice, plus the ability to change routes and destinations on the fly.

Cons: Total inability to connect to hotspots with WPA2 level of security.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

used this right out of box. Routed me around tunnels that would not let LP Gas through, most direct route to my destination. To my knowledge, this is the most up to date unit available. The large screen made following the route easy. The pop-ups made finding gas stations easy. Would recommend this unit to anyone.

Pros: easy set up, programmable for your specific RV, can be used for your car or bike too. Easy to setup multi stop or waypoint navigation. Keeps record of gas, maintenance records. Stores frequently used addresses for easy access. Easy to read large screen.

Cons: nothing so far

Intuitive and easy to use

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use right out of the box. If you've used a GPS system before, you probably already know how to use this one.

Pros: Large screen size, routing accuracy, can be customized with your particluar RV's size information

Cons: The user manual that comes with it is pretty much just a quick start guide. The only other negative is that if you shut the unit off before your destination, it does not pick up with your itinerary when you turn the unit back on - you have to re-enter the destination address again.

Very Pleased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been quite happy with features of this unit. Easy to see, hear and customize to my preferences. The touch screen worked well for me right out of the box without any need for adjusting (aligning). The ability to download some POI's databases from web is also a very nice feature. I have looked back at some negative comments on these units and have not had the issues mentioned such as hearing (I using the Tom voice at 60% volume), seeing in sunny conditions (somewhat washed out but still quite viewable) or altering routes (rerouting) to avoid roads. The accuracy has been right on the money in terms of when to turn and arrival at destination. I will admit that the manual that comes with it will not explain how to use every aspect. There is a down loadable manual that is better but still does not explain how to do everything. I learned all these abilities by experimentation in the house plugged into AC. Trial and error and experimentation will get you there where the manual is short. I am fairly computer savy so that experimentation comes easy for me. The suction cup attachment was a problem in that it does not work on any part of my dash board. I ended up sticking it right onto the windshield under the rear view mirror so that the display is right under the mirror. It works fine there and does not obstruct my vision any more than it would have on top of the dash. Battery power only last a few hours so on long trips you will need to plug it into power outlet.

Pros: Easy to use once you learn it. Has lots of useful info for RV users.

Cons: Weak manual. You need to be an experimenter to learn all functions. Attachment limited to windshield.

You can edit the average speed, based on your own driving experience, to give you a more accurate driving time. If you enter the cost per mile, you can calculate the total cost of the trip. The Quick Planner covers larger cities in North America only.

I don't know if it is the newest; however, I do know that this unit is very slow to boot up, and it is not very user friendly friendly. Hope this helps. [ Steven  Dec 15, 2013 ]
