Overview

Our take on the Amazon Echo

I can't count the number of times I've been up to my elbows in dinner prep and realized I forgot to turn on a little cookin' music. Without the Amazon Echo, my choice is to stop working, wash my hands and correct my mistake, or keep working in dreary silence. With the Echo, all I have to do is speak up and say "Alexa, play Dinnertime Playlist," and my favorite tunes begin to stream from the cylindrical speaker, instantly brightening my day.

Seven built-in microphones pick up voice commands from across the room.

Your spoken wish is the Echo's command

I can't count the number of times I've been up to my elbows in dinner prep and realized I forgot to turn on a little cookin' music. Without the Amazon Echo, my choice is to stop working, wash my hands and correct my mistake, or keep working in dreary silence. With the Echo, all I have to do is speak up and say "Alexa, play Dinnertime Playlist," and my favorite tunes begin to stream from the cylindrical speaker, instantly brightening my day.

A revolution in hands-free control

The Echo is a speaker system, yes, but it adds a great deal of value as a voice control for a number of other daily tasks, too. It controls Smart Home lights, switches, and thermostats from companies like WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, INSTEON, Nest, and more. The Alexa virtual assistant app can answer questions, read audiobooks to you, and let you know the weather report. Just ask out loud, and you shall receive.

Always getting smarter

The Alexa service learns how to do new things all the time. Amazon refers to these abilities as "skills." Recent skills updates have allowed users to call for a car service, order takeout food, and place online shopping orders. You can track packages and set daily reminders. Since the Echo is connected to the cloud, it learns new skills in the blink of an eye.

Amazon Echo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Question?? Can Echo be set up to answer questions that my wife may have while I am doing errands. For example she might forget where I have gone (she has short memory loss) and want to refresh her memory. Could she ask Alexa, were is my husband? (I realize that i would need to have recorded an answer before leaving home. This is the primary reason for me purchasing Echo. The limited instruction material that I have been able to find makes no mention of this ability. In the past you have been very helpful in answering my questions, for which I am grateful. Thanks!

A wonderful addition to my house to make life easier.

Pros: Easy to set up. Since it only responds to "Alexa", it doesn't get in the way or turn on when not needed.

Cons: Some minor fluctuation in volume occasionally for unknown reasons

Nice new toy

William from Rockingham, VA on 9/13/2017

New technology for older couple. Nice to have and learn how to use.

Pros: Fairly easy to set up and use. Nice to have Radio feature and access to quick news and weather. Gonna explore lighting control features and adding more tools.

Cons: It would be nice to have audio out port to hook to larger speakers.

My new toy: The Amazon Echo

Michael from West Melbourne FL on 7/19/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Amazon Echo is a whole lot of fun, even for kids ! I rarely get myself a "toy", but this Birthday gift was exactly that. First off, the Echo is very easy to use and connect to your Wi-Fi network. It comes with an application that can be installed on a PC or a tablet computer. After a ten minutes set-up the Echo connects with the web and from that point on it's like living with a genius by your side that you can ask questions to any time you wish. The first thing my daughter did was ask Alexa to purr like a kitten and the Echo did exactly that. In fact you can set the Echo to output a variety of background noises, or sounds. Just recently I linked my Echo to my Sirius XM radio account and now I can listen to all of the music at home that I usually listen to in my car. The Echo is also capable of helping you out around the house with things that would usually require you to get up and do yourself. For instance with some inexpensive hardware you can have the Echo turn on and off the lights in your home with simple voice commands. I haven't tried to connect my lights yet but that will be next on my list of things to try with my new Echo.

Pros: Provides a lot of fun and can automate quite a bit around the house.

Cons: - Doesn't come with a battery compartment for portable use; it only plugs into a 120 Volt outlet. Note that a Battery adapter is available separately. - A little on the expensive side @ $179.00 when considering the Amazon Dot only costs $39.00. - The Echo comes with "Alexa's" voice, which is the only voice it has far as I can tell. It would be nice to be able to switch voices after a while.

The Alexa is amazing. We have just started learning to use it, but it is very intuitive. Just ask and she delivers. Want music, NPR, an alarm, a recipe historical information, just ask. My wife and I are 78 years old-we feel young of mind. What fun and what potential.

I love it, but I'm a little disappointed with the messaging! It doesn't recognise my granddaughters name, even though she's in my Echo contacts. Otherwise I love her!!

Cons: Some messaging problems

I Like It

Tim from Tonawanda, NY on 6/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really liking my Amazon Echo. I'm still learning all of the different features that Alexa can do. I have my Harmony Elite connected to The Echo and it works fairly well. The one thing I wish it could do was adjust the volume on my receiver to what volume I would like. Alexa only turns it up or down a little at a time. I also have my Honeywell thermostat connected and it works well. Overall a very cool product that I need to delve into further.

Pros: Price. It was on sale and I had money in Crutchfield Reward points and then I noticed today 6/26/17 they have a 1 day sale so I called Crutchfield and they adjusted the price!!! Easy peasy! So I ended up with a great deal

Cons: I wish you could turn the volume down on my receiver to exactly what I want.

I have a number of these products. I have all three designs and they all work extremely well. Amazon with the echo product seems to be quite far ahead in this new field. There is no doubt that Google is coming fast.

Pros: Works extremely well and get smarter every day

Cons: None that I know of. I have several of these in my homes

Features

Voice-Activated Powered Speaker: The Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. Echo connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather, and more.

360° omni-directional Sound: The Amazon Echo has been fine-tuned to deliver crisp vocals with dynamic bass response. Its dual downward-firing speakers produce 360° omni-directional audio to fill any room with immersive sound. A 2" tweeter delivers crisp highs, while a 2.5" woofer and reflex port produces deep midbass response.

Built-In WiFi (MIMO): The Amazon Echo comes ready to connect to your home's WiFi network. It features Dual-band (2.4GHz/5GHz), dual-antenna MIMO WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n) for faster streaming and fewer dropped connections than standard WiFi. It does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) WiFi.

Alexa Voice Service: When you want to use the Echo, simply say the wake word, "Alexa," and the Echo lights up and streams audio to the cloud, where the Alexa Voice Service is leveraged to recognize and respond to your request instantly. Once you say "Alexa", the audio stream includes a fraction of a second of audio before the wake word, and closes once your question or request has been processed. Alexa (the brain behind Echo) is built in the cloud, so it is always getting smarter. The more you use Echo, the more it adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences.

  • Wake Word: When the Amazon Echo detects the "Alexa" wake word, the light ring around the top of Amazon Echo turns blue to indicate that the Amazon Echo is streaming audio to the Cloud. If you'd like, you can give each Alexa device (Echo or Echo Dot) a distinct name.
  • Wake-Up Sound: You can also enable a "wake-up sound", a short audible tone that plays after the wake word "Alexa" is recognized to indicate that the device is streaming audio.
  • End-Of-Request Sound: You can also enable an "end-of-request sound" that will play a short audible tone at the end of your request, to indicate that the connection has closed and the device is no longer streaming audio.
Note: Alexa is developed to get better over time. Alexa uses your voice recordings and other information, including from third-party services, to answer your questions, fulfill your requests, and improve your experience and our services. When you set up the Echo or link third-party services with Alexa, Alexa begins processing some information, such as your music playlists. You can also help Alexa improve its voice services by providing feedback within History or by using Voice Training in the Alexa App.

Far-Field Voice Recognition: Tucked under its light ring is an array of seven microphones that use beam-forming technology and enhanced noise cancellation. With far-field voice recognition, the Echo can hear you ask a question from any direction - even while playing music. When you want to use Echo, just say the wake word "Alexa" and the Echo responds instantly.

Note: You can turn the Amazon Echo's microphone off by pushing the microphone on/off button on the top of the device. When the microphone on/off button turns red, the microphone is off. The device will not respond to the wake word, nor respond to the action button, until you reactivate the microphone by pushing the microphone on/off button again.

ESP (Echo Spatial Perception): If you have more than one Echo or Echo Dot, Alexa responds intelligently from the Echo you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception).

Note: You cannot connect multiple Alexa devices to each other and play the same requested audio at the same time.

Alexa App: With the free Alexa App on Apple iOS 8.0+, Android OS 4.4+, Fire OS, and desktop browsers, you can easily setup (including WiFi network) and manage the Echo voice-activated powered speaker. The free Amazon Alexa App is a companion to your Alexa device for setup, remote control, and enhanced features. Interactions with Alexa are automatically mirrored visually on your Amazon Alexa App, providing more information as you want it. The Amazon Alexa App lets you easily manage your alarms, music, shopping lists, and more.

  • Music Apps: Use the Alexa App to connect music services you already use like Spotify, Pandora, and iHeart Radio.
  • Smart Home: Setup your smart home devices from WeMo, Philips Hue, SmartThings, Insteon, Nest, and more.
  • Books & Podcasts: See what books are available to read from your Kindle & Audible libraries, plus enjoy Podcasts.
  • Shopping & Calendars: View shopping, to-do lists, and Google Calendar while on the go.
  • Timers & Alarms: Control your timers and set custom tones for your alarms, and much more.
  • 3rd-Party Skills: The Alexa App is also where you discover and enable third-party skills.

Music Apps: The Amazon Echo provides hands-free voice control for Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Spotify Connect. You can also upload your personal music collection from iTunes, Google Play Music, and more to your music library on Amazon and then stream your music through your Alexa device. Simply ask for your favorite artist or song, or request a specific genre or mood. You can also search for music by lyrics, when a song or album was released, or let Alexa pick the music for you.

Note: The Amazon Echo supports Spotify Connect (requires Spotify Premium subscription), which allows you to play music on the Echo and use the Spotify app on your phone or tablet as a remote.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Echo is also Bluetooth-enabled (A2DP/AVRCP) and acts as a Bluetooth receiver, transmitter, or controller. Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) support provides audio streaming from your mobile device to the Amazon Echo, or from the Amazon Echo to a Bluetooth speaker or headphone. Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) offers voice control of connected mobile devices - like your smartphone or tablet.

Note: Hands-free voice control is not supported for Mac OS X devices. Hands-free phone communication (HFP) is not supported.

Smart Home: The Amazon Echo works with devices such as lights, switches, thermostats, and more from WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Insteon, Nest, and more.  Ask Alexa to switch on a lamp, turn on the fan, dim the lights, or increase the temperature. Some products work directly with Alexa and other smart home ecosystems require a compatible hub.

  • Lighting: With the Amazon Echo and Alexa, you can control lighting products using your voice, smartphone, or tablet.
  • Outlets: With the Echo, Alexa, and smart outlets, you can control electronics and appliances using your voice, smartphone, or tablet.
  • Thermostats: With the Echo, Alexa, and compatible thermostats, you can control the temperature of your home using your voice, smartphone, or tablet.
  • Door Locks: With the Echo and Alexa you can control compatible door locks using your voice, smartphone, or tablet.

Skills: Skills are voice-driven capabilities that enhance the functionality of the Amazon Echo with Alexa. You can search for and enable skills in the Alexa app or from the Alexa Skills store on the website. You can also see ratings and reviews to learn what other customers are saying about the thousands of skills available in the Alexa App. To use an Alexa skill, first enable the skill, and then make your request based on the example phrases shown in the app. If you know the exact name of the skill you want, you can say, "Enable [skill name] skill." Some skills may require you to link to an existing account and a separate subscription in order to use the skill.

Note: At this time, you cannot customize which content is available on specific devices. For example, music, skills, shopping lists are available on all Alexa devices registered to the same account as the content.

IFTTT: The Echo with Alexa supports IFTTT, or "IF This, Then That," a third-party service that automates how your devices, apps, and websites work with each other through rules (or "Applets"). After you activate an Applet through the IFFTT website, Alexa can then trigger that IFTTT Applet when you interact with the Echo.

Note: Currently, the Echo and Alexa can't be the action in an Applet. For example, you can't allow Alexa to notify you of new tweets on your Twitter account.

Amazon Prime Shopping: Amazon Prime members can ask the Echo through "Alexa" to order eligible products ordered before, many Prime products and digital music tracks and albums. Your default payment and shipping settings will be used to place your order. You can require a speakable confirmation code, turn purchasing off, and see product and order details in your Alexa App. Just like orders placed through Amazon.com, orders placed through Alexa are subject to Amazon's Conditions of Use & Privacy Notice.

News & Information: The Amazon Echo with Alexa can help you stay connected to the news that matters most to you - like world & local news, traffic, weather, sports, and movie times.

Questions & Answers: The Echo with Alexa taps into Yelp to provide you with info on local restaurants, shops, and other businesses. It also makes a great calculator and dictionary. You can even get fast facts on all type of topics from Wikipedia.

Auto Updates: Because the Amazon Echo is always connected to the internet, updates are delivered automatically.

AC Power Adapter: The Amazon Echo includes an AC power adapter that will need to be plugged into an AC power outlet, surge protector, or power conditioner.

Note: The Amazon Echo is not battery powered.
