MartinLogan ElectroMotion® IC
Our take on the MartinLogan ElectroMotion® IC by Crutchfield's Dave Bar
Enjoy spacious sound without sacrificing space
MartinLogan's stealthy ElectroMotion IC may just be the perfect in-ceiling speaker. It can deliver an unforgettable listening experience practically anywhere in your home, yet its ultra-low profile vanishes neatly into your room's decor without taking up an inch of valuable floor space. Install a pair of these speakers in a kitchen or bedroom for fantastic stereo sound, or use multiple pairs to create a concealed home theater system.
Folded Motion™ tweeter for detailed sound
The distinctive sound of the ElectroMotion IC starts with MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter. Rather than a dome or cone driver, this tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music and movie soundtracks sound amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.
Bass that keeps pace
The speaker's tight, responsive bass and dynamic midrange come courtesy of a 6-1/2" aluminum cone woofer. Mounted in a rigid, cast-aluminum basket to minimize unwanted resonance, the woofer supplies fast, clean sound that blends seamlessly with the Folded Motion tweeter. A hand-built, audiophile-grade crossover further ensures precise driver integration for high-accuracy sound.
The ElectroMotion IC's robust mounting-lock system allows quick, trouble-free installation, providing firm coupling of the speaker's chassis to the ceiling. And this speaker is practically invisible thanks to an ultra-low profile, micro-perforated grille and hidden bezel. Magnets hold the grille in place, reducing the risk of warping or damage during installation. The Folded Motion tweeter is mounted at an angle, allowing the entire speaker to rotate to aim sound precisely where you want it.

In-Ceiling Loudspeaker: The ElectroMotion IC in-ceiling loudspeaker features MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter and a 6.5" aluminum cone woofer with cast aluminum basket that provides powerful low-frequency bass extension. This stealthy in-ceiling speaker blends seamlessly into any home thanks to it's ultra-low profile, micro-perforated grille with no visible bezel.
Angled Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter helps give the ElectroMotion IW in-ceiling speaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x80°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage. The Folded Motion tweeter is mounted at an angle, allowing the entire speaker to rotate to aim sound precisely where you want it.
Aluminum Cone Woofer: The ElectroMotion IC in-ceiling speaker employs a 6.5" aluminum cone woofer with a rubber surround, concave dust cap, and cast aluminum basket for detailed midrange and powerful low-frequency bass extension.
Precision Vojtko Crossover: Carefully hand-built using only the finest polyester capacitors and air-core coils, the crossover employ's MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko topology for vanishingly low distortion and seamless driver integration. This precision-tuned network preserves even the most microscopic sonic nuances while handling the full dynamics of any source.
Spring-Post Connectors: The MartinLogan ElectroMotion IC features two spring-post connectors to attach your speaker wire. The spring-posts will accept bare wire (16- to 12-gauge) and pin-connectors.
Robust Mounting Locks: A robust mounting-lock system allows quick, trouble-free installation. When not in use, the constant-control mounting locks are held securely within a self-contained housing. When moved into place during installation, they couple the speaker's chassis firmly to the ceiling. And if the speaker is ever removed, the locks retract and latch themselves back in their housings.
Ultra-Low Profile Grille: The MartinLogan EM-IC features an ultra-low profile, paintable micro-perforated grille with no visible bezel for a near invisible integration into any ceiling. A magnetic system secures the grille easily into place, reducing the risk of warping or damage during installation.
Applications & Placement: The EM-IC is suitable for almost any application in average to small rooms. Ideal for use in a multi-channel home theater as a surround speaker, in a kitchen as 2-channel stereo speaker, or in a hallway as part of a distributed audio system. This MartinLogan in-ceiling speaker offers superb imaging and flexible placement in nearly any location. However, for best performance and imaging place speakers equidistant from one another and avoid physical obstructions between the speaker and primary listening position.
Installation Dimensions: The in-ceiling speaker has an overall measurement of 9.125" in diameter x 5.375" deep. It requires a cut-out of 8.25" in diameter and a mounting depth of 5.25" behind the ceiling surface. The speaker only protrudes 0.125" from the ceiling.
Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.
