Our take on the JBL PRX735

High power for some serious sound

A single JBL PRX735 PA speaker puts out up to 1,500 watts producing 136 dB of sound pressure — that's enough power to fill a small club or 300-seat auditorium with loud, wall-vibrating sound and music all by itself. You could also use this versatile speaker for speech or acoustic music in a venue twice that size. For a working band, a DJ, or a church performer, match up a pair of PRX735s with a couple of PRX715XLF or PRX718XLF powered subwoofers, and you've got a strong, versatile full-range PA system that can handle medium-size venues and many outdoor gigs.

Road-tested components

PRX735 with grille removed

The 15" low-frequency driver in the PRX735 is the same one that JBL uses in its top-of-the-line concert arrays. This Differential Drive® woofer puts out high-powered sound with low distortion, having proven its toughness on the road by standing up to constant high-volume play. The high-frequency driver with its JBL-designed compression horn and waveguide covers a wide area with crystal-clear, accurate sound. The horn-loaded 6.5" driver bridges the gap between the high- and low-frequency drivers, providing the smooth, strong midrange that's so important for vocals.

A built-in dynamic limiter by dbx ensures that an unexpected overload won't damage the speakers. A 2-channel mixer lets you hook your PRX735 up to a variety of sources for different situations, from using a singlemicrophone to address a conference, to playing the stereo signal from a DJ mixer.

Rugged enclosure

JBL used tongue-and-groove construction to build this solid poplar enclosure, then coated it with their tough DuraFlex™ finish. You can be sure this speaker will survive the normal bumps and bangs of life on the road and play reliably on the job every night. You can set a PRX735 on stage as a front-of-house PA speaker or as a side-fill stage monitor. An onboard EQ lets you switch from a flat response to one with enhanced highs and lows, which adds excitement to the mix.

PRX735 is an excellent powered PA speaker system

Brian H from Albuquerque, NM on 4/7/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PRX735 is a very good sounding PA speaker. The effortless, dynamic, have great low end, and are fairly low fatigue (for a PA speaker). You can hear the fan(s) running when the room is completely quiet, but otherwise they are the perfect, bulletproof PA speaker. Try them w/o the subwoofer first, they do a very good job on their own.

Pros: Clean, dynamic, punchy PA speakers

Cons: Fan noise, but only audible between songs under very quiet conditions

I have a high energy rock & roll band and I bought the 735's about 2 months ago. We have performed a few times in small to mid size clubs with absolutely fantastic results. Clear crisp mids and highs with a nice low end, and that was without a sub. We used the boost mode. We had a larger venue last night. 7000 sq.ft. Gym with 40 ft ceiling. My drummer brought 1 Yamaha DSX15 sub and we filled the entire place with extremely excellent sound which several people commented on after the show, including a couple of musicians. I was running the cabinets at 1 o'clock and my A&H board at less than 0 DB {unity} I was concerned about the cement floors and walls, and with sound bouncing all over the place. I sing lead, but I went out to the back of the room so I could hear our female vocalist and it was absolutely powerful.. At the end of 4 hrs the panels were still cool !!!! The new fans and auto-sleep mode during breaks {no signal } really work fantastically. 5 STARS TO JBL !! Update: 1/23/2015 Sorry to say I got rid of the JBL 735's after a few months of hearing rattles at low frequencies in the back panel. First they replaced the 50 cent cooling fans {cheap as they come} which stopped the rattling. After a couple more shows it came back and possibly started somewhere else in the housing. I became concerned when I saw the tech open them up { both speaker panels were rattling} and I saw how cheaply they were made. JBL is not what they use to be. I must say these rattles could not be heard during a show, the speakers themselves sounded good, but when I rehearse and am playing my piano in my basement, it annoyed me. For over 2k they should be built better. The QSC's blow them away , even the balance of Lows to Highs is remarkably better. My piano sounds immensely better across the keys, and all instruments and vocals sound incredibly cleaner on all frequencies. The band was against the change at first, but thrilled now. No more JBL for me

High Performance Drivers: The JBL PRX735 powered loudspeaker is comprised of a 12" Differential Drive woofer, 6.5" horn-loaded midrange driver, and 1.5" annular polymer diaphragm, neodymium compression driver mounted to a 90° (h) by 50° (v) horn. Wide coverage angles are achieved without compromise and harmonic distortion is minimized for maximum driver SPL without harshness. The sound is smooth and consistent without hotspots so control is optimized.

Bi-Amplification: Powering the PRX735 is a 1500-watt (750 watts RMS) high performance, exceptionally low distortion bi-amplification system engineered to deliver clean power with maximum headroom to efficiently deliver smooth high frequencies and rich, deep bass response even at very high sound power levels. Main & Monitor user selectable EQ presets are provided.

Rugged Enclosure: The PRX735'e enclosure is built from a combination of 25mm (on the top and bottom for added rigidity) and 18mm, strong, light-weight poplar plywood made structurally sound with tongue and groove joints. The cabinet is protected by JBL's tour proven DuraFlex finish and 16AWG steel grille. Light-weight glass-filled nylon handles ensure portability. All M10 suspension points are constructed from 14 gauge steel and have been tested with a yield-strength of 1000 lbs. each.

Inputs/Outputs: A combo-connector offers XLR and 1/4" TRS phone jack compatibility. Selectable input sensitivities allow a broad range of devices to be properly matched, from the output of a mixer to an MP3 player or a dynamic microphone. There is also a stereo line-level RCA input. A balanced XLR loop through output connector enables the simple "daisy-chaining" of additional PRX series powered speakers if more coverage and level is required.

Mounting Options: The universal mounting capabilities make the PRX735 perfect for live performers, fixed installations, or commercial A/V rental companies. Whether you use the speaker in the floor monitor position or in a fixed position suspended by the M10 points, you can count on superior and reliable performance.
