Our take on the PreSonus Monitor Station by Crutchfield's Eric Angevine
Your studio is full of monitoring gear, and you need some way to bring it all under your fingertips. The PreSonus Monitor Station is designed to give you control over a diverse array of inputs and outputs without moving from your mix position. Built into its sturdy, space-saving chassis are a talkback mic, three source inputs, three speaker outputs, four variable-volume headphone outputs and control over the routing and level of every element connected to the Monitor Station.
The rear panel of the PreSonus Monitor Station is packed with input/output options.
Get ahead of the game
The Monitor Station helps you stay one step ahead of a complicated mix, with sophisticated communication and monitoring functions. When you need to discuss the next track with a performer isolated on the other side of the glass, you'll have the option of using the built-in condenser microphone, or adding an external talkback mic via a balanced XLR input. The cue feature allows you to audition a source on your side of the glass before introducing it into the live mix, and additional controls let you mute individual sources or monitor input on a mono channel. All the convenience features a working producer needs are laid out on a logical, easy to read interface panel.
The rear panel of the Monitor Station is packed with professional-grade inputs and outputs. Seven pairs of 1/4" TRS jacks provide connections for your monitoring and recording needs. Four sets of headphones can be controlled with independent volume knobs, so each listener can choose his or her own comfort level. A separate cue connection lets you send audio into your own headphones or studio speakers so you can monitor a separate source without distracting the talent. If you're working with a DJ or digitizing your own record collection, the unbalanced RCA connection with built-in phono preamp will be your best friend.

Desktop Studio Control Center: The PreSonus Monitor Station enables you to manage multiple audio sources and sets of monitor speakers, simply and easily, right from your desktop. The Monitor Station comes complete with a built-in talkback mic, three source inputs, three speaker outputs, four headphone amplifiers and control over the routing and level of every element connected to the Monitor Station - effectively giving you complete control over your entire studio environment.
3 Inputs: This convenient control center provides two sets of stereo, line-level analog 1/4" inputs (balanced) and a pair of RCA analog aux/phono inputs (unbalanced) with a defeatable RIAA filter so you can connect a turntable or CD player. All three input pairs have the option to be simultaneously available or exclusive, and a Mono switch sums the selected stereo source so you can check for phase problems.
Note: The aux/phono input on the Monitor Station are multipurpose. When used as aux inputs, they are simply -10 dB line-level inputs on RCA jacks, suitable for use with CD and DVD players, cassette decks, and other consumer gear other than turntables. Activate the RIAA filter for connection of a turntable.
8-Segment LED Meter: Observing the input levels for the main and cue buses is simple with the Monitor Station's dual 8-segment LED meters, which can be referenced to +4, +10, or +18 dBu. Input selection, speaker selection, and LED meter mode can be set and saved during power up so that you can customize your recording system for the way you work.
3 Stereo Speaker Outputs: The Monitor Station's three balanced 1/4" TRS stereo outputs with individual Speaker Level Adjust knobs and Master Mute, Dim, Mono and Level controls allow you to connect three sets of reference monitors and easily compare your mix on each of them. Audition your music with your choice of three stereo pairs of speaker outputs, each with separate level control. All speakers can be simultaneously available, or just one pair at a time, or you can choose between speakers A and B, with speaker output C remaining active to feed a subwoofer.
Line-Level Outputs: You also get a pair of line-level main 1/4" outputs, a pair of line-level cue 1/4" outputs to connect a recorder or external headphone amp.
Headphone Amplifier Outputs: The four headphone amplifier outputs with individual source and level controls give you the ability to feed custom headphone mixes to you or any of the artists in your studio.
Control Knobs: A large, conveniently located knob controls the main speaker output level (but not the main line-level outs), and a Dim knob lets you reduce the speaker output by a variable amount. Of course, you can mute the speakers as well.
Built-in Talkback Mic: You can speak to the musicians over the headphone and cue buses using the onboard electret-condenser talkback microphone or connect a mic to the XLR talkback input. The cue signal is automatically dimmed when you use the talkback mic.
