Mackie ProDX4

4-channel digital mixer with Bluetooth® control

Overview

Our take on the Mackie ProDX4

Mackie's ProDX4 digital mixer gives you wireless control of up to four inputs going to a stereo main output and a monitor channel — perfect for a duo or solo act that doesn't need a lot of mic channels, but does want detailed control over the sound. After downloading the MixerConnect™ app and pairing your device with a ProDX4, you make all the settings and adjustments on your own device's touchscreen. And only one device will work at a time, so no smartphone hackers will be able to destroy your mix.

Use your smartphone or tablet to mix live

Mackie's ProDX4 digital mixer gives you wireless control of up to four inputs going to a stereo main output and a monitor channel — perfect for a duo or solo act that doesn't need a lot of mic channels, but does want detailed control over the sound. After downloading the MixerConnect™ app and pairing your device with a ProDX4, you make all the settings and adjustments on your own device's touchscreen. And only one device will work at a time, so no smartphone hackers will be able to destroy your mix.

The Bluetooth works both ways

The ProDX4 gives you a wireless operating range of up to about 30 feet, so you can place the console with all its wired connections out of the way offstage, while you control the mix wirelessly from onstage with your device in your pocket or on a mic stand. You can stream music wirelessly from your device into stereo channel 3/4 to play music on a break, for example, or for playing backing tracks during your performance. The MixerConnect app gives you access to your music player while maintaining control over the mixer.

Mixer console features manual override

You can park your smartphone or small tablet on the mixer's Control Bridge for convenient visual access while you play your instrument. A single rotary knob adjusts the level of any input or output channel you select by push button. In addition to the two XLR-1/4" combo connections, an 1/8" stereo connection can take the headphone output signal from any music player and assign it to channel 3/4. (This wired connection takes precedent over the Bluetooth playback connection, which also goes to channel 3/4.)

Processing features

Each input channel features Mackie's Wide-Z™ preamp, which doesn't require any gain adjustment to get the cleanest signal, and will accept unbalanced instrument signals without needing a separate direct box (DI). An adjustable high-pass filter, 3-band EQ, and a one-knob dynamic compressor give you big-time control over each channel's sound. A 7-band graphic equalizer on each output channel, mains and monitor, will rein in wild tones and eliminate feedback. Onboard ReadyFX™ effects — 16 different reverbs and delays — let you color the sound your way and add spacial feeling to your music.

In order to ensure uninterrupted performances, Mackie recommends setting your smartphone to airplane mode and turning the Bluetooth feature back on before each show.

Mackie ProDX4

You can manually adjust the volume of all inputs and outputs without using the wireless app.

Features

Overview: The Mackie ProDX4 is a 4-channel compact mixer designed for soloists, duos, and small group applications that don't require a lot of channels. It features two XLR-1/4" combo mic/line inputs, a 3.5mm stereo input, and an intuitive single knob control. The Mackie ProDX series mixers include a new ReadyFX effects engine that instantly delivers your choice of 16 effects. The ProDX4 has wireless streaming and control via the Mackie MixerConnect app for iOS and Android, and an integrated bridge to hold your phone so you can view your mix.

Bluetooth: The ProDX4 employs Bluetooth v3.0 to connect to your smartphone or tablet. You can stream audio from your device, with or without the MixerConnect app. Using the MixerConnect app gives you control over EQ settings and FX levels for all of the input channels.

Main Inputs: The ProDX4 offers the following main inputs:

  • Channels 1-2: The mixer has two Wide-Z combo inputs that will accept a balanced mic signal using an XLR connector. The inputs will also accept 1/4" line-level signals and/or Hi-Z sources, such as guitars.
  • Channels 3/4: Channels 3/4 feature a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) input for connecting a portable player, or you can stream wirelessly via Bluetooth from your smart device.

Outputs: The ProDX4 has left and right 1/4" TRS main outputs on the rear panel for connecting the mixer to a pair of powered speakers or an amplifier. There is also one 1/4" TRS Aux Out, which can be used for connecting to a powered monitor. You can independently control the output level of the main out and aux out.

Headphone Output: A 3.5mm (1/8") output is supplied for connecting a pair of stereo headphones. The headphone output has an independent level control. A "headphone" button on the front panel selects the output which can be controlled with the main volume knob. After 5 seconds of inactivity, the selection changes back to the default "main" output. You can also adjust the headphone output on the app.

Setting Gain: The Channel 1 and 2 inputs have their own channel buttons, while the stereo input (Channel 3/4) has a single channel button. After pressing the channel button of the input you want to set, simply rotate the large "endless" level knob. A 15-segment LED meter shows the input level. You can also adjust the channel level on the app.

MixerConnect App: You can wirelessly control the ProDX4 mixer via an Android or iOS device through the Mackie MixerConnect app. With the app, you can control everything, including levels, EQ, effects, compression, and linking channels. The app provides three main views: Mixer View (for levels, metering, and mutes), Channel View (for controlling the 3-band EQ and effects for an individual channel), and System View (for saving or recalling settings and controlling the 7-band graphic EQ on the outputs). The app is available from Google Play for Android devices (4.0.3 and up) and from the Apple iTunes App Store for iOS devices running 8.0 or later.

3-Band Equalization: Using the MixerConnect app, you can control the equalization of each channel on the display of the connected smartphone. You can raise or lower the levels of the EQ by touching and dragging your finger over the controls. Each of the inputs has 3-band equalization, with the following bands:

  • Low Cut (channels 1-2 only): Off, 20Hz to 400Hz (12 dB/octave)
  • Low Shelving: +/- 12dB @ 80 Hz
  • Mid-Peaking: +/- 12dB sweep at frequencies between 100 Hz to 8 kHz
  • High Shelving: +/- 12dB @ 12.5 kHz

Compressor: Channels 1-2 each have a compressor for reducing the dynamic range of the input signals. The compressor is typically used for vocals or drum microphones for more control. When the incoming signal exceeds the set threshold level, the signal level is automatically compressed. This reduces the dynamic range and reduces the chance of distortion due to overloading the input signals. The control consists of a horizontal slider on the smartphone display that adjusts from off to full compression. There is no compressor on the Bluetooth/Stereo channel (channel 3/4).

Effects: The powerful new ReadyFX effects engine can deliver 16 effects that can be used to enhance any performance. The FX Send slider lets you control the level of the effect on the currently selected channel. The smartphone's touch display lets you choose between the following effects:

Bright Room Warm Lounge Small Stage Warm Theater
Warm Hall Concert Hall Plate Reverb Cathedral
Chorus Chorus + Reverb Doubler Tape Slap
Delay 1 (Fast) Delay 2 (Medium) Delay 3 (Slow) Reverb + Delay

Graphic Equalizer: The ProDX4 offers independent 7-Band Graphic EQs for the Main and Aux outputs. On the app, you can select which output you want to EQ, then adjust each of the following bands +/- 12dB with the vertical sliders on the smartphone display: 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, and 8kHz.
