Thump Series 12" 2-way powered PA speaker
Our take on the Mackie TH-12A by Crutchfield's Dave Delamere
An affordable and portable powered speaker
Mackie's TH-12A powered speaker offers a big stage sound without the big money. This budget-friendly Thump Series speaker includes one 300-watt amp for the 12" woofer and a 100-watt amp for the 1" tweeter. The included equalizer, time alignment, and crossover circuitry work hand-in-hand to help the amps' power output to elicit maximum peformance from the two drivers. And to make sure you don't overdo it, Mackie incorporates a sub-sonic filter to eliminate over-excursion, a thermal shutdown and reset circuit, and independent high- and low-filter compressors so you don't push your drivers over the limit.
Connect and control
The back panel of the TH-12A includes the one XLR input for your mixer output, or you can directly connect a microphone for a lecture or presentation. The XLR "Thru" output lets you daisy-chain additional TH-12A speakers for larger events. Mackie also includes a single microphone and line level control. Shape your sound with the included 3-band contour equalizer, or switch it off and let the speaker play the signal coming from the mixer.
Its angled back lets the TH-12A double as a floor wedge.
The TH-12A's tough polypropylene cabinet includes three handles for portability and a weather-resistant perforated metal grille to protect the speaker. Using the included pole insert, you can mount this Thump speaker on a tripod stand or on a speaker pole mounted over a powered sub. Its angled design also lets you use it as a floor monitor in a live performance.

Powered PA Loudspeaker: The Mackie TH-12A is a full-range, portable, powered loudspeaker providing high-output, ultra-wide dispersion and low-distortion performance in a compact, lightweight design. An ultra-wide frequency response makes them ideal as a keyboard, vocal, or even bass guitar monitor.
400W Ultra-Efficient Fast Recovery Amplification: Class-D Fast Recovery amplification pushes unmatched power to the high-frequency compression driver and bass-pounding high-output woofer. Two Fast Recovery amplifiers independently power the 12" low-frequency woofer and 1" high-frequency compression driver.
High-Output Transducers: The Mackie TH-12A houses a 1" high-frequency compression driver for smooth, wide dispersion, and a 12" low-frequency woofer for chest-pounding bass.
Mackie Active Processing: Mackie Active processing, including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency.
- Electronic Crossover: Featuring separate Linkwitz-Reilly 24dB-per-octave crossover circuits for the LF woofer and HF compression driver, Mackie's electronic crossover circuitry effectively splits input signal frequencies into highs and lows for the transducers, and eliminates unwanted phasing issues. As a result, you get optimum imaging, depth of field and definition.
- Time Correction: Time Correction technology effectively times the arrival of electrical impulses to each transducer, to ensure both highs and lows arrive at the listeners' ears simultaneously.
3-Band Contour EQ: A 3-band equalizer gives you tonal control, with an available 15dB boost or cut at 80Hz (low shelf), 100Hz to 8kHz (sweepable mids), and 12kHz (high shelf).
Mic/Line Input/Output: The Mackie TH-12A is fitted with a Mic/Line XLR balanced input for direct connection of a microphone or mixer output. There is also a XLR balanced output to daisy chain another Mackie TH-12A powered speaker.
Impact-Resistance Enclosure: The cabinet is constructed of high-pressure injected polypropylene. The enclosure features reinforcement ribbing and structural strengthening resulting in a strong, super-rigid design provide ideal acoustical characteristics.
Portable Design: The ultra-lightweight and ergonomically-minded cabinet design means easy setup and transport.
Mounting Options: There is an integrated pole mount cup for use with an optional pole mount system (sold separately). The trapezoidal cabinet has also been designed to provide an ideal floor monitor position.
Protection Circuitry: Each driver has its own transparent compression circuit, which helps protect them from damaging transient peaks. An over-excursion filter, inserted just before the low frequency amplifier, protects the woofer from bottoming-out when the low-end is driven to the maximum. Separate thermal switches activate and shut down the high and/or low frequency amplifiers until they cool down. These safeguards ensure long life and great-sounding loudspeakers you can always count on.
