Overview

Our take on the Audeze LCD-XC

What do most of the best headphones in the world have in common? They usually feature an open-back design — favored for its spacious sound. But open headphones aren't practical if you're listening in noisy environments or don't want sound to leak out and disturb others. That's why Audeze developed the LCD-XC headphones. These headphones feature closed-back wood earcups, which ensure warm, natural sound while keeping out external noise. You can enjoy the fine detail, easy responsiveness, and extended frequency range of Audeze's planar magnetic headphones in environments that are ill-suited to open designs. Plus, the LCD-XC uses Audeze's Fazor technology for a lighter, thinner transducer that's more efficiently driven than other planar models. Their smooth, nimble performance and three-dimensional imaging make these among the best-sounding closed-back headphones available.

Audeze LCD-XC closed-back planar magnetic headphones

Audeze's planar magnetic technology offers lifelike sound

Audeze has been a leader in developing and improving planar magnetic technology in headphones. Their drivers are known for accuracy and extended frequency response. Unlike the dynamic drivers found in most headphones, planar magnetic drivers rely on a thin diaphragm with a large surface area to generate sound. The circuit is etched across the entire surface of an ultra-thin diaphragm, which is suspended between two large magnets. The LCD-XC headphones use a powerful and uniform magnetic field, which results in extremely low distortion even at high volume. When the circuit receives an audio signal, it interacts with the magnetic field, thus causing the diaphragm to move back and forth. The end result is breathtakingly lifelike sound with a spaciousness few closed-back headphones have ever reproduced.

Quality cables ensure accurate signal transmission

The LCD-XC comes with two high-quality headphone cables. One terminates in a balanced XLR connector for use with compatible high-performance headphone amplifiers. This preserves a balanced signal throughout the circuit for precise sound with minimal interference. The other cable terminates in a standard 1/4" plug for connection to a home stereo. Both cables feature 4-pin mini XLR connectors for each earcup for a secure connection. Also included is a 1/8" adapter for connecting the headphones to a mobile device or portable amplifier. While the LCD-XC can be driven by a mobile device, a headphone amplifier will ensure you get the best sound quality from these impressive headphones.

Exquisite craftsmanship

The meticulously crafted LCD-XC headphones are made in the USA. Each earcup is hand-crafted from African bubinga wood, for warm, inviting tone. The headband and earcups are luxuriously appointed with soft padding covered with genuine sheepskin leather. To ensure a long lifespan for such fine headphones, Audeze includes a rugged travel case. Don't confuse this case with a soft zip-up case you might get with other headphones. This is a waterproof, hardshell case with a padded interior and a handle. It provides the ultimate protection for the LCD-XC, whether you're storing them at home or taking them to a friend's house to introduce him to their tantalizing sound.

Praise for the Audeze LCD-XC from Sound & Vision

"Every now and then, a headphone comes along that truly advances the state of the art. Audeze LCD-XC is a game changer! ...Dynamic impact is astonishing, and you never get the feeling you're approaching the limits of what the LCD-XC can do... Resolution is superb, and for a closed-back headphone, the soundstage is big and wide. The LCD-XC sends shivers up and down my spine."

Best Closed headphone?

Philip from Easton, MD on 10/20/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Five (5) stars for the headphone: My initial impression was - (these are) Huge - . For home use, the LCD-XC work just fine. If I go away, I think the Bose QC25 (or the new QC35) might be the better option. At home the only option (for closed back) would be the Audeze LCD-XC. Sound differs from Open back headphones, but these must be the best option I have heard. I am getting up in years so, I perhaps enjoy the brightness of these. Clarity is not an age factor as far as I know and these have plenty of that and it is appreciated., Four (4) Stars for Crutchfield: Box was previously opened and balanced cable and User Manual removed Waiting for Crutchfield to make it right.

Pros: Best Closed headphone sound I have found

Cons: Huge, Price,

audeze nails it

Mike from Bethlehem, PA on 5/15/2017

I auditioned all the sennheisers including the hd800 I own two pair of 650's I auditioned all the audeze and the LCD-Xc are the best headphones I have ever heard finally a headphone that gives me an audio room a high end one at that rolled into the design at no cost!!! What I mean by that is I have a totally dialed in audio room specifically built for listening and the complaint I have with headphones is their inability to focus my brain and give me a sense of parimeters no matter where you go for a live concert there are walls and a ceiling and a sense of space only lousy concerts those in venues where sound is bouncing all over the place do you have unrestrained sound these headphones give you that sense of space and by doing that they focus that sound like a great audio room or a nice small venue live like the Blue Note in NYC. Kudos Audeze you nailed it finally

Pros: Everything

Cons: A bit heavy but if positioned properly on your head you do not even notice it but I have ridden dirt moto enduros and trials and mountain bike so I'm used to a helmet so that litttle extra does not bother me

Audeze LCD-XC

Benny from Thousand Oaks, CA on 9/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a background, I own LCD-X, that I regularly use with a HifiMan HM901(with balanced amp card), and ocasionally use with Cypher L CLAS DB + ALO RX-MK3+, for both sources the sound is quite impressive to my taste, slightly better in the hm901, however, when I use the LCD-X in my office I've been bothering my co-workers for the obvious fact that LCD-X are open head phones, so I decided to look for a closed design head phones that could give me similar sound quality ( LCD-X) having a plannar magnetic heart. Coming back to the LCD-XC... I've been trying the LCD-XC for over two weeks and so far I am quite impressed and pleased with it. The Sound Quality by fact can't be compared with the open version (LCD-X) however when combined with the HifiMan HM901, the sound quality to my taste is quite close; it provides great great details, the bass is quite balanced and quite solid (I am a bass fan). The Noise reduction is OK (I am comparing with the best ones in this area for me: Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless) from what I can hear going on in my work place, and the sound going out from them to bother others is quite limited. Overall it covers my noise reduction needs combined with great sound quality close to my LCD-X. I tried the LCD-XC with the CLAS+MK3 combo and the sound was in general OK; I totally prefer the HiFiMan combination. Build Quality is really really good; they are heavy and to some extend bulky, but I don't care ! Travel case

Incredible detail...you get what you pay for

Kerwin from Brooklyn, NY on 3/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use these on my computer and I immediately noticed a greater amount of detail and clarity that I can hear in my music. It also adds a little more realism and greater sense of immersion to my games. That being said, the highs sound a little bright to my ears. Another thing that was immediately apparent was that they would sound better with a dedicated amp. I actually had to turn up my computer's volume significantly to match what I was hearing with my other headphones, which made the brightness in the highs that much more apparent. The mids and the lows sounded ok, but definitely another indication that these need amplification. I finally paired these with a dedicated dac/amp combo and the headphones sound amazing! Build quality is superb. I love that the ear cups and head band can be replaced if necessary. The carrying case is fantastic. It looks like it can take a beating. One last thing to note: Don't wear rings when you're putting these on/taking them off. With the way I hold them, I've scuffed the wood with my wedding band. It's nothing a little buffing couldn't take out.

Pros: Exceptional detail and clarity. Beautiful wood accents. Very comfortable ear cups. Amazing build quality. Very sturdy carrying case.

Cons: Sounds much better with dedicated amp. Heavy.

bright, lacking body

Simonel from New York on 2/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are too bright and lacking body, even when connected to a Benchmark DAC. They are planar magnetic, and IIRC this technology gives you a ton of details and little bass or body. I auditioned planar speakers around 2003 and they sounded bright and lacking body as well. My cheap Sennheiser HD 448 do not sound as detailed, but they sound better! I was truly surprised and disappointed. At any rate, don't believe any reviews, including mine - believe only your ears.

Pros: none

Cons: sound, price

Great Closed Cans!

RCBinTN from Nashville, TN on 10/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the XC to complement my "open" LCD-X cans, which I love. I really enjoy the new Audeze sound stage with the lower-impedence, more responsive performance (vs. the darker LCD-2/3). I was interested in "closed" cans to use when such a listening experience is needed. So far, after a couple weeks, I am very impressed with the XC. They are high quality head phones - solid. They do not leak much sound. The sound is totally different than the X - more punchy bass and brighter upper mids. The sound stage is very wide and high for a closed can. These HP's are great for rock and heavier music; I am hearing Led Zeppelin like never before. Voices are clear and surrounded by the instruments. The excellent resolution makes it easy to focus on specific instruments if you like. These HP's are heavy but not uncomfortable for exended listening sessions due to the nicely-designed head band and ear cups. They can also be driven with any source, but a decent HP amplifier will improve your listening experience. My HP amp delivers 1W into 32 ohms; that does a decent job of driving the XC. Overall - the best closed HP that I've ever heard. As always, I enjoyed great response and service from Crutchfield, as always. Thanks my friends. Sincerely, RCBinTN

Pros: Great clarity Wide, high sound stage Punchy bass with good extension Highly detailed mids/treble Big ear cups fully surround your ears Good sound isolation Very solid, substantial design & quality The wood cups are beautiful Both 1/4" and XRL cables supplied 3-year warranty

Cons: Heavy cans, take some "getting used to"
