This beauty is a beast

Lots of speakers make sound that can fill your room just fine. But Monitor Audio's Silver 8 delivers a dynamic, edge-of-your-seat performance that positively owns it. Experience warm, natural sounding vocals, tightly focused and textured instrumentals, plus a punchy, deep bass attack that can bring your favorite recordings to life.

Monitor Audio Silver 8 in Black Oak

Advanced driver design and cabinet construction ensure the Monitor Audio Silver 8 delivers your music and movie soundtracks with breathtaking clarity and detail.

Excellence by design

Every Silver series speaker incorporates Monitor Audio's gold dome tweeter for smooth, detailed highs. The domes are made from a ceramic-coated aluminum/magnesium alloy originally developed by the aerospace industry for jet engine components, then anodized with a layer of gold for ideal stiffness and damping characteristics. Their extremely low mass and high rigidity allow these tweeters to play accurately far beyond the range of human hearing with little to no audible distortion, making them an excellent choice for high-resolution music listening.

The Silver 8's 3-way design incorporates two ultra-rigid 6" woofers and a separate 4" midrange driver for tight, powerful bass and clean, accurate midrange. Created from the same lightweight alloy as the tweeters, these drivers are strengthened and stiffened even further by adding a pattern of dimples to the surface of the cone. The dimples help resist bending and twisting that cause distortion while allowing the use of thinner, lighter, more responsive cones.

Further refinements to ensure powerful performance

Meticulous engineering and many hours of listening go into each Silver series speaker. Monitor paid close attention to important design elements — both visible and hidden. At its heart, the Silver 8 uses a sophisticated crossover network with premium-grade components. Monitor also chose their Pureflow® Silver-plated OFC wire to make all internal cabling connections. Together, these refinement provide better driver integration and faster transients for smooth sound with real presence and immediacy.

Instead of conventional mounting screws, each driver is held in place using a single tensioned rod, or through-bolt, that threads into its back plate then secures to back of the cabinet. The bolt not only acts as a rigid cabinet brace to reduce box coloration, it also eliminates the need for traditional driver mounting hardware, effectively decoupling the driver and front baffle to eliminate another source of unwanted resonance. The lack of visible mounting hardware also adds to the overall look of elegance.

Monitor thoroughly engineered the Silver 8's bass-reflex ports, as well. This new type of port design utilizes straight, rifled grooves inside the port to accelerate air flow and reduce turbulence compared to conventional ports. This ability to move air in and out of the cabinet more quickly provides faster, more powerful bass and superior transient response.

A solid cabinet with a luxurious finish

Monitor Audio speakers have long been known for their sturdy, vault-like cabinet construction. The Silver 8's enclosure is built solid to resist vibration that can color sound and reduce accuracy. The exterior comes clad in your choice of a beautifully finished walnut, rosenut, or black oak wood veneer, as well as high-gloss black lacquer.  Base plinths are provided for added stability and a solid foundation for superior acoustics. Spikes are supplied to accommodate installing the speaker on carpeting, and non-slip polymer pads are also included to protect wood floors. An attractive "floating" magnetic grille that features invisible attachments gives the Silver 8 a clean, classic look whether you use it with the grille on or off.

Ultimate speaker audition Winner!

Lazaro from Miami Lakes, FL on 9/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to replace my older Klipsch Towers. They handled high volume well & with no distortion, but I found them to sound a little flat, mainly had good base, but very deficient in the midrange. I did a fair amount of speaker auditioning. I compared them at home against the B&W CM 9 & although I thought the B&W's looked sharper, the Monitor Silver 8's sounded better overall & they are also very attractive. The tweeters sounded good on both, but the midrange & bass were better to my ears on the Monitor's. The Monitor's had a better soundstage & were also substantially less costly than the B&W's, so also a better value!

Pros: Great Sound Quality & better value than many of it's competitors.

Cons:

Love them!!

Great Mid-Range

Blake from Des Moines, IA on 8/16/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This rating is based on listening to this speaker outside of my home, but with an A/B comparison of my current speakers. I attempted to purchase this speaker, but received it in shambles. Like another review mentioned the drivers were broke, so this speaker was shipped back to Crutchfield. The sound out of this speaker is amazing. It is a huge upgrade over my B&W 684 towers. Doing an A/B comparison these sound a million times better. The mid-range suddenly shows up and makes my old speakers sound like there is a blanket over them. One thing to watch is these are rated at 4 Ohms. My Marantz SR6011 handled the larger Silver 10s just fine, but keep any eye on the heat if your setup is not rated for 4 Ohm speakers. Not only does this sound great it also looks great.

Pros: Price seemed fair. Beautiful exterior. Sounds great compared to B&W 684

Cons: 4 Ohm speaker -- if you don't have the proper equipment

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been considering these speakers for several years to replace my 25 year old Vandersteens. The Steens were still sounding good, but my daughter's cat had done a number on the sock that wraps around them. I have about 70 hours on the Silver 8s and they are sounding very good. Clean, satisfying base, no tubbyness, man's spoken voice sounds natural, nice presence in the mids, vocals and piano sound great, and the highs are clean, crisp, smooth, and non irritating. I amvery satisfied with my choice. Jack .

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good speakers, mid and highs are crystal clear. There is plenty of bass, more than I expected from a pair of 6 inch woofers. My listening room is slightly under 2000 cubic feet, and the bass can be a little difficult to control on some material. I've got the speakers 2 feet out from the back wall, and the bass still over powers the room at times. I have not tried the port plugs yet, that is the next move, also I have them bi-wired, I may try standard wiring, to see if I can get better control of the bass. Despite the bass problem, on most material these are very good speakers, I particularly like jazz, like the Rippingtons, or Fourplay, the Silver 8s do these very well. The Monitor Silver 8 may not be the ideal rockers speaker, they seem to lack the midbass slam associated with rock music. Instead the 8s sound is very evenly balanced. The bass problem I am having is more a matter of speaker/ room interaction,( too much bass for the size of the room,), than a problem of the speaker itself. The fit and finish of the Silver 8s is incredible, more like fine furniture. Also like fine furniture, these speakers are very solidly constructed. Rap the speaker hard with your hand, there is no hollow sound just the thunk from hitting the speaker. All in all, I am very pleased with the Monitor Silver 8 speakers, they are speakers with a very balanced tone, with crystal clear highs, full mid tones, and supprising bass. They also look great. Once I figure the bass out they will

Pros: Sound, and finish

Cons: Maybe not for rooms less than 12.5 x 19.5 x 8.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took time to put together funds to purchase these incredible speakers, and I am extremely pleased with them! Much improved detail over my previous $500 speakers. I have Walnut veneer, top quality. I worked with Cosmo, ordered them on late Thursday evening, and they were delivered by Monday! I will be loyal to the team at Crutchfield as long as I need electronics. Am counting days until I can order the Silver Center

Pros: Sound, build quality, Walnut finish, Crutchfield and Cosmo.

Cons: Went without these for so long!

Nice Speakers

Anonymous from Wichita, KS on 1/21/2017

Great speakers for the money. They get four stars because they can be a bit picky about placement. I can't imagine how the other reviewer received a pair with broken driver frames. I removed a couple of the drivers in my Silver 8s just to investigate this claim of "cheap plastic." The driver baskets ("frames") are made with a quite robust plastic composite, not "cheap." I have a very hard time believing they could be damaged during shipping. I would think the cabinets would be destroyed before the baskets would ever break. The only gripe I have about the driver design is that the tension bolts on the rear of the cabinets require tightening about every 30 hours of moderately loud music. The midrange can be somewhat recessed compared to other speakers, but it's still quite revealing. I have these in a 25x16x8 room and they produce plenty of bass. They're best when placed about 20" from the front wall and at least 20" from the side walls. I settled on pairing these with a Parasound Halo Integrated amp after trying many others. They were much too bright with Rogue Audio amps. They sound decent with Yamaha amps but the sound with Yamaha is a bit thin compared to the Halo.

Pros: Nice mids, highs, and balance

Cons: Bass response is heavily dependent on amplifier choice. Tension bolts require tightening once in a while.

Old music sounds new again

chris from The Colony, TX on 1/3/2017

Great looking and even better sounding speakers. These replaced a pair of low end Tannoy MX3 speakers and I really can hear what I was missing. They are a little on the revealing side so will improve with better sources and amplification. I started with my NAD T748 receiver in bi-amp mode which was already very good until I tried my Audio Research 150.2 and then they really opened up and shined beautifully. Be sure to take a moment and check all the drivers after unboxing because they can easily damage in shipment, the driver frames are cheap plastic attached to a heavy magnet and bolt from the rear. When mine arrived both mid range drivers and 1 bass driver were damaged (I bought a demo pair that shipped in original boxes, not from Crutchfield) but Monitor Audio sent me replacements covered under warranty and were very easy to install. Overall I am very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Well balanced, not boomy or bright. Easy to adjust feet which eliminate wobble on carpet.

Cons: Weak driver frames prone to break in shipment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, have not purchased speakers since my Bose 901's. It's a shame it's hard to find stores to audition speakers. I auditioned Monitor Audio speakers about 10 years ago and loved them for the price back then. I purchesed $400.00 floor speakers through Crutchfield and they did not meet my standard. They are now my back speakers. Now to the review. I am no audio file. Because theses are metal cone speaks it is a must to let them break in for a minum of 60 hours. Then the bass will start to come alive. Because I am a little older I love that these are very quick speakers. I need to turn my sub woofer almost off to let the bass response show. There is very little separation from the woofer, mid range and tweeter. This is the major reason for my upgrade in the floor speakers. The transition of the sounds through the 60hz through 2khz is almost seamless. I have these in a meadium size room. Left speaker woofer port is plugged because it is near the wall. The right is not. This speaker back points toward the dinning room. Makes a big difference in the bass response. No more double bass hanging around. The mid range and tweeters really shine with the male and female voices. I have listened to both speakers set up side by side. The Monitors blow the less expensive speakers away. I can actually hear the brushes hitting the high hats, not just the ting ting ting. These speakers are just amazing for 2K. I am driving these with Denon 3200 AV receiver.

Pros: No holes on the front with the grill off. Very well made and very good looking speaker.

Cons: For the price, no cons. Absolutely zero cons.

Fantastic!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these paired with the Cambridge CX series of components (CXA80 amp) and I really couldn't be happier. The entire system really seems to allow me to hear individual instruments better. Plenty of bass and great mids and highs. The walnut color is beautiful as well. Top notch all the way!

Cons:

Pleased. Very pleased.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a beautiful sounding and looking pair of speakers. The wood veneer is a big step up from vinyl wrapped MDF. Build quality is great. These are articulate speakers. Vocals are well-defined and overall the sound is very crisp - not boxy or muffled as compared to other speakers in their segment. I continue to enjoy listening to my music library and watch movies with these hooked up in my living room. Being used to other speakers that image well, these are not a disappointment in any way.

Pros: Finish quality and appearance are great. The quality of sound is what I was looking for. Sound nice at low and higher volume in an open floor plan living room. The convertible spike/feet provide a very nice foundation with the plinth.

Cons: I have found no significant cons.

Mark from Vermont on 4/2/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This purchase was an upgrade to a three way speaker system. They are driven by a NAD 150 watt per channel integrated amplifier. Online reviews described a deep sound stage and room filling sound. They look like the monolith in "2001: a space odyssey" but have a premium wood finish and blend in to the room(I was not the only one that needed to authorize this purchase). After allowing for the necessary break in period, these speakers fill the room with sound nicely. I see no need for subwoofer. I listen to the radio and CDs but mostly computer files filtered through a DAC and i am very pleased with this purchase. I have not tried, nor do I feel a need to try a bi-wired connection.

Pros: Build quality. Sound stage. Clarity in mid and high ranges without being overstated. Interactions with Crutchfield who have helped gradually upgrade my entire system.

Great Sound

Dan from Colorado on 6/1/2015

I purchased the Silver 10s, which are the larger siblings of these Silver 8s. Unfortunate that Crutchfield did not carry them :-( but I must say these speakers are fantastic. The 8s and 10s are nearly identical (10s have two 8" woofers instead of 6")..

Pros: Great finish. Very beautiful speakers, especially with grills off. Nice clean sound, great imaging and full range sound. I run these full range with other MA surrounds.

Cons: Very plain looking with grills in place. Carpet spikes are a little too short for large pile carpet and/or thick pad.

Features

3-Way Speaker Design: The Monitor Audio Silver series 8 floorstanding loudspeaker employs a 3-way driver design with a single 1" C-CAM gold dome tweeter, one 4" C-CAM/RST midrange driver and two 6" C-CAM/RST long-throw bass woofers. This 3-way configuration is optimized for greater accuracy over a critical frequency band to deliver superb midrange focus and precision, as well as extended bass and crystal clear high frequencies.

  • Newly Designed Tweeter: A new C-CAM gold dome tweeter design with damped rear chamber and innovative dome venting technique improves clarity and widens operating bandwidth.
  • Specially Designed Midrange Driver: A specially developed 4" mid-range driver with an "under-hung" voice coil and motor system ensures very low distortion.
  • Dual Bass Drivers: Dual 6" bass drivers featuring a concave "dished" C-CAM cone profile allows for better damping and improved midbass clarity.

C-CAM Technology: C-CAM driver technology is used throughout the Silver series 8 floorstanding loudspeaker, providing coherent tonal balance and sonic signature across the entering audio frequency spectrum.

  • C-CAM Gold-Dome Tweeter: The gold dome tweeter is formed from a ceramic-coated aluminum/magnesium alloy, gold anodized to a specific thickness for ideal stiffness and damping characteristics. Its new profile and surround geometry have been developed using advanced modeling tools, to provide the optimum qualities for accurate sound reproduction. The new design moves the first order of breakup to beyond 35kHz, producing a linear response way beyond audibility, which matches the wide frequency bandwidth available from HD music and cinema sound formats. The gold dome is thinner, lighter, more rigid and therefore more efficient than domes made from other materials which are prone to distortion in the audio band.
  • C-CAM Cone Midrange Driver and Bass Woofers: Ceramic-Coated Aluminum/Magnesium is a material originally developed by the aerospace industry for jet engine components. Its properties are ideal for loudspeaker cones being extremely rigid, yet light enough to yield high overall efficiency. In manufacture, aluminum/magnesium alloy undergoes a three-stage stress-relieving process to remove surface deformation and molecular weakness. Once formed, the alloy cone is subjected to a high temperature anodic coating process in which a layer of pure ceramic alumina is depleted onto its surfaces to a depth of 50 microns, producing a completely rigid sandwich of alloy and heat-dissipating ceramic material. Conventional cones are liable to flex or twist in operation, producing a significant level of audible distortion. C-CAM cones have a much higher resistance to bending stress and therefore exhibit much greater fidelity over their entire operating range.

RST (Rigid Surface Technology): The Silver series 8 floorstanding speaker combines Rigid Surface Technology (RST) with its C-CAM cone woofer design for a stronger, lighter weight cone. The Rigid Surface Technology (RST) cone profile was inspired by the Japanese art of Origami, which demonstrates how a very light material (like paper) can be strengthened and made more rigid by making small and precise folds on it surface. Developed and perfect using sophisticated computer modeling (Finite Element Analysis), the Silver series midbass drivers have been strengthened by a pattern of dimples. RST significantly increases cone rigidity, allowing the radiating surfaces to resist mechanical bending forces, which can twist the  shape of conventional driver cones to produce distorted sound. The strengthening effect of RST means that Monitor Audio can use thinner, lighter and more responsive C-CM cones which provide speed and accuracy while offering greatly reduced distortion. The RST patterns also help to displace standing waves that can propagate on the cone's surface.

Single Through-Bolt Mount: The tweeter, midrange driver, and bass woofers are fixed to the cabinet with single through-bolt driver fixing mounts. This single-through-bolt mount design provides mechanical de-coupling and enhanced midband clarity and resolution. The through-bolts also act as rigid cross bracing to give a very solid non-resonant cabinet.

MDF Enclosure w/ Magnetic Grille: The Silver 8 employs a MDF enclosure for accurate, uncolored sound. Rigid 20mm MDF construction is used throughout the enclosure with radial and cross-bracing techniques for high rigidity and low cabinet coloration. The tall, shallow cabinet and improved damping allows for greater room position flexibility. In addition, the tower speaker comes with an acoustically transparent cloth grille.

HiVe II Bass Reflex Port: The Silver 8 uses a bass reflex cabinet (dual rear firing ports) with Monitor Audio's HiVe II port design for greater efficiency and bigger bass response from a slim tower speaker. The HiVe II bass reflex port is shaped to have the same effect on airflow as a gun-barrel on a bullet. Rifled grooves inside the port help to accelerate the flow and reduce turbulence, so air moves in and out of the port more efficiently, for a faster more dynamic bass response.

Note: If the bass is too boomy, you can insert the included foam port plug into the speaker's lower rear firing port to tighten and lessen the bass.

High Quality Crossover & Wiring: The Silver 8 uses high quality crossovers (LF/MF=500Hz, MF/HF=2.7kHz) with premium grade polypropylene film capacitors. The speaker also utilizes "Pureflow" silver plated OFC copper internal cabling.

Dual Gold-Plated Binding Posts: The floorstanding loudspeaker has two sets of gold-plated binding posts connected by wire-jumpers. The gold-plated binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, & banana plugs (single only). Using the dual posts, you can bi-wire or bi-amp the speaker. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker provides improved bass & treble performance. If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: The binding-post speaker terminals are color-coded (red+/black-) and are at floor-level for easy identification and hookup.

Base with Rubber or Spiked Feet: The Silver series 8 floorstanding speaker includes a base which will need to be installed or you can choose to use the speaker without the base. In addition, the Silver 8 comes with four feet assembly which can be used as rubber feet or spikes (the spikes simply unscrew from the feet assembly in order to use them as rubber feet). The spike feet are great for carpeted floors, while the rubber feet are recommended for hardwood and tile floors. Dimensions will vary based on base and foot configuration.

  • with Base & Spikes: 9.625" (w) x 41.75" (h) x 14.1875" (d)
  • with Base & Rubber Feet: 9.625" (w) x 41.125" (h) x 14.1875" (d)
  • with only Spikes (no base): 7.3125" (w) x 40.75" (h) x 13.25" (d)
  • with only Rubber Feet (no base): 7.3125" (w) x 40.125" (h) x 13.25" (d)
Note: The feet thread into the bottom of the speaker or base, and are adjustable to level the speaker up with your floor.

I checked with a manager at the C'ville store, and they said: We do have them profiled and available to listen to in the virtual room, but we don't have those physically on display in the store. [ Jeff  Aug 21, 2015 ]  Staff
I would not recommend using these speakers with a receiver that is not rated for 4-ohm speakers. The lower ohm rating will cause the amplifier to work harder and may end up damaging your receiver. [ Jeff  Jan 28, 2015 ]  Staff
John, Using 4 ohm speakers with your receiver will cause it to put out more wattage at the same volume setting. From what I understand, decreasing the speaker impedance by half will cause the amp in the receiver to output about 50 percent more power at the same setting which will lead to increased heat output as well. Your receiver may overheat depending on how high you have the volume set. At low volumes this shouldn't be a problem but at higher volumes you will have more heat and distortion from the amp. I've heard of people having their receiver overheating running 4 ohm speakers. When I bought these speakers I ended up buying a dedicated amp that is rated for 200 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 300 watts per channel at 4 ohms just to be safe. BTW, I love the speakers. [ Mark  Jan 28, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You can use those speakers on the front left and right channels only. For the rest of the channels on the receiver the speakers would need to be 6 or 8 ohms. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jan 07, 2015 ]  Staff
