From our staff review "Grab and go party"

When I needed a quick and simple sound system for a friend's birthday party, I grabbed the Samson Expedition XP150. And boy, was it easy to carry, set up, and play.

Channel your ideas

The XP150 offers a 2-band EQ for each channel, along with a digital reverb processor that'll add depth and dimension to your sound. The mixer features three line/mic channels with XLR and 1/4-inch inputs. It also includes a stereo channel with 1/4" and 3.5mm inputs which allow you to connect your smartphone, laptop, or other portable music devices, as well as drum machines and keyboards. This makes it ideal for fitness instructors, music educators, and anyone else who needs to play back music while using a microphone.

Speaking of which...

Each speaker features a 6" low-frequency driver and a 1" tweeter with 60° x 90° coverage, housed in a vented enclosure with an integrated 1-3/8" speaker stand mount that can be used with Samson's LS2 Lightweight Speaker Stands (sold separately). The cabinet design also allows you to use the speakers as floor monitors.

Beyond its musical role, the XP150 excels at presentations, in educational applications, and anywhere you need an amplified voice. It's a portable powerhouse for your programming.

Features

Overview: The Samson Expedition XP150 is a portable PA system that is lightweight and compact, making it ideal for education, conferences, presentations, musicians, and singer/songwriters. The XP150 includes a small, removable 5-channel, 150-watt powered mixer that fits into the rear cavity of one of the speakers. The rear cavity of the other speaker is used for storing the power cord and speaker wires. The two speakers slide and lock together for easy portability. The entire system weighs only 24 pounds.

Speakers: The XP150 features a pair of matched speakers with dual 2-way, molded bass-reflex enclosures. Each speaker has a 6" woofer and a 1" tweeter that provide 90° horizontal and 60° vertical coverage. The speakers can be used on a tabletop, turned on their sides for angled floor monitoring, or pole mounted on the provided 1-3/8" speaker stand mount. The cabinets are made of durable, high-impact ABS plastic construction, and weigh approximately 12 pounds each. Two 20' lengths of speaker wire are included.

Mixer: The XP150's 5-channel mixer features three Mic/Line inputs (Channels 1, 2, 3) with XLR and 1/4" jacks, and a stereo input (Channel 4/5) with two 1/4" jacks and a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) jack. The stereo input can be used to connect external devices, such as drum machines, keyboards, CD/tape players, or MP3 players. The 3 Mic/Line inputs have +15V DC fixed Phantom Power, and a built-in DSP to add digital reverb to your voice or instrument. Each channel has a 2-band EQ with +/-15dB of boost/cut at 100Hz and 10kHz. The mixer can be removed for tabletop use, or left inside the cavity of the speaker.

Amplifier: The mixer has two 1/4" outputs (8Ω minimum) for connecting the speakers. The built-in Class D amplifier outputs 75 watts RMS per channel (into 8Ω). The system has a Speech/Music switch to let you select the overall system frequency response. In the Speech position, a 150Hz, 18dB per octave high pass filter is engaged, removing some of the bass for clearer speech amplification. When removed, the dimensions of the mixer are: 8.845" W, 3.514" H, 5.387" D.

Grab and go party

Written by Jeff Miller, Staff Writer - Creative, on 11/18/2014 12:10:00 PM

When I needed a quick and simple sound system to play music at a friend's birthday party, I grabbed the Samson Expedition XP150. And boy, was it easy to carry. Everything packed together in a portable bundle, with a handle I could grip in one hand. It's a convenient design that was a cinch to unpack and set up at the venue.

I had two playlists — background tunes for dinner and upbeat grooves for late night — so my phone was the DJ. I connected it via a minijack cable from the headphone jack to the 5-channel mixer's 3.55mm input. (There are mic, line, and instrument inputs for more sophisticated setups.) The speakers were placed to the left and right of a long table, with plenty of extra slack from the included speaker cables.

At a little over half-volume, the system delivered enough sound and energy to rock the small party. While I was leery about calling myself a DJ early on ("I'm just a guy hitting 'play'"), I embraced the title when people told me they were having fun. But the best endorsement came from a guest who happened to be a local DJ. He said, "Man, this little system sounds great for this room. And it's a lot less to lug around than all the equipment I have now."
