Nest Protect 2nd Generation - Nightly Promise gives a reassuring green flash when you turn out the lights
We've all had that moment of panic when the smoke alarm blasts us out of a deep sleep. Where's the smoke? Is it a crumb in the toaster oven, or is the kitchen engulfed in flames? Your standard alarm can't tell you much, but a Nest Protect can give you an instant report, so you know what to do next.
In fact, if you install multiple Nest smoke detectors, they can talk to each other so you know which room or rooms are affected. As soon as Nest Protect senses there's a problem, you'll get a friendly notification. If things get worse, Nest Protect will flash red, sound an alarm and tell you what you need to know, using words. It can also send a message to your phone or tablet so you know what's going on when you're away. The detector connects to a 120-volt AC line with three included wire nuts.
The Nest Protect is compatible with other Nest home automation devices:
Your Nest devices work together to give you more control over home security. If your smoke detector sends you an alert while you're at work, you can turn on your Nest camera and assess the situation instantly, then use the camera's microphone and speakers to warn anyone who might be home. Even better, if your Nest Protect senses rising levels of carbon monoxide, your Nest Thermostat can automatically turn off your gas furnace.
Beautiful and state of the art.

Beautiful and state of the art.
Pros: Easy to install, talks to our Nest smart thermostat
Easy setup. Only drawback is that it will not support interconnected (hardwired) existing alarms which will not trigger alarm for the monitoring company. Nest will speak to other Nest products.
Very easy to set up, no false alarms (thus far), and I like the "night-light" feature. I do have to paint that portion of the ceiling as the base for my old ones was wider.
Pros: Easy setup, looks good, nice features.
Well designed product, nicely packaged and easy to install
Good product. Easy to setup, worked with existing wiring.
Pros: Easy to setup, worked with existing wiring.
Easy to install. The kids like the pathlight feature as a nightlight. Also a nice peace of mind that they do a self-check everyday.
Great product & easy to link up to the phone app
Pros: Easy to install, looks good & reliable
Awesome product. I installed six of these throughout my home. Easy to install (even if you've never installed smoke detectors before, like me); did not take too long. Easy setup. Works great with the Nest iOS app and fits into my home ecosystem perfectly.
Pros: Easy installation, looks great, not overly sensitive
Cons: Expensive (but within range of inferior competitors)
Very easy install. Replaced existing hardwired smoke/CO detectors. The mounting bracket allows you to rotate the unit to get correct alignment (doesn't depend on alignment of mounting screws). Nightlight feature is great but would like it to be a bit brighter on the brightest setting. Did some research on alternatives and chose this based on the not so great reviews of the cheaper options. I think they are a good value for the price. They look really nice also.
Pros: Easy install, modern design, pre-alarm warning
Easy to setup, communicates with other nest products. Auto nightlight feature is nice.
Pros: Easy to setup and install
Nice and easy to set up and install. Also nice that it coordinates with other next smoke detectors and thermostats in the house. Self tests so you don't have to
Pros: Nice looking, easy install, coordinates with other neat products
Cons: None so far
So far so good. First, Nest's customer service is excellent. While installing the mounting plate cracked. I emailed Nest and explained to them what happened and that I'd like to buy a new mounting plate. The said No, and sent me a new mounting plate for Free. For that 5 stars. The next day after installation I was cooking, and the Nest Protect said something like, "Smoke is detected the alarm will sound." I then went to the Nest App and silenced the Alarm. It never went off after that. Last there is a really cool night light feature. When the room goes dark an unobtrusive light turns itself on. If you do not want this feature you can turn it off with the App. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is that I havent cooked a steak yet, and ribeye's tend to smoke up my apartment. However I am looking forward to getting the next thermostat one day. If you are worried about 2.4Ghz or 5.0 ghz, 2.4Ghz band travels longer distances and through walls better. If your Nest isnt close to a router you would need 2.4Ghz
Pros: Easy to set up, easy to use. attractive, well built and loud. paired with iphone no problem.
Cons: A little tricky to install but not difficult. On a scale of 1-10 (1 easy and 10 difficult) I'd give this a 3
You won't find a better design for a smoke-CO detector.
Pros: Internet connection; Nest integration.
Cons: Only connects to 2.4GHz WiFi.
I was blown away by the fit and finish of the Protect, especially the gasketed battery door and bonded gasket on the mounting baseplate. The almost infinite rotation of the unit on the baseplate was a welcome surprise too, as you can tweak the angle you your heart's content to make it square with the walls or read the logo in a certain direction. Pretty meaningless for a smoke detector, but a nice touch regardless. I had some connection problems on the first unit, figured out I needed to switch to the 2.4GHz network and still had failed install problems after that. The second unit failed a few times and then finally worked, and then appeared to have sent a proper setup to the first unit. Everything was fine after that, and maybe the iPhone setup works better than the Android version, who knows... The Pathlight function is pretty cool for a stairway landing or hallway, and is plenty of light while navigating a moonlit area of the house. I haven't actually triggered any of the alarm functions yet, so I'm not sure how well it works as a smoke or CO detector. It seems to completely reject light cooking smoke that gets carried to our second floor which would nuisance trigger our old units. I'm planning to buy a few of the battery units to round out the areas that still need protection.
Pros: Looks great, very well designed Lots of nice small details
Cons: The box and packaging looks far more expensive than it needs to be, but maybe it's deceptively cheap? Minor network connection hiccups during installation with Android device, multiple failed installs
Super easy to install and hook up to app.
Pros: Install ease.
simple programming, simple installation. I like the night light feature. Effortless link to the Nest thermostat. I will be buying more
Pros: simple programming, simple installation.
Cons: a little pricey
Nice to have peace of mind knowing any pets you've left at home aren't in an emergency. The night light feature is a fantastic bonus. We love it for that alone. No false alarms yet. Reviewers from previous model seemed to struggle with that, but no issues here.
Pros: Attractive, knowing batteries are in working order, tests itself periodically, night light
Great features. Can alert you when you are away of problems.
Pros: Many features. Straight forward install. Will be buying more to replace other smoke debtors in the house.
At the end of the day, it is a smoke/CO detector, so not a lot to get excited about. However, while nearly all the products of this type are generally hideous, the Nest manages to at least be aesthetically non-offensive. Setup and installation are easy as you'd expect. The lighting features, especially pathlight, could be useful for some, but I ended up shutting it off after one night. This is just a result of the Nest Protect's proximity to my bed and it could illuminate just from shifting around in bed. Perhaps one day Nest or another company will make a smoke/CO detector that is a flush mount and better disappears into the decor, but until that time, I feel this is the best solution, if a bit pricey. Perhaps they could drop the price by a third if they scaled back on the packaging.
Pros: Appearance and features.
The Nest Protect is very simple to set up. In fact if you are setting up more than one the second and subsequent units are even simpler to install. If you are replacing an existing alarm this is a 5 minute job at the outside. The Protect lets you know when the lights go out that it is functioning properly and the "pathlight" feature is a really nice way to illuminate areas of the house when you need them without having to install always on night lights.
Pros: - Easy to configure thanks to a simple step by step process in the app. - Easy to install, physically - Everything you need is in the kit - Looks great - Always lets you know it is working - Pathlight feature is a nice touch - Very easy to monitor from the easy to use app. or via a browser
Cons: - Expensive alternative to traditional alarms.
A better fleshed out product when compared to the original. No false alarms (thus far), easier to access battery compartment, hasn't had any connection failures, ability to silence false alarms. Things you would expect for a smoke/CO detector at this price point. Set up is easy, the makes it easy to see all of your Nest or Dropcam products. Installation even for the 120 V version is fairly straight forward.
Pros: Sleek design, easy set up, a vast improvement over the original, plays nicely with of Nest products. A great product if you are investing in the Nest universe of smart home products.
Cons: Doesn't connect to 5 G No Z-wave nor Zigbee nor WeMo compatibility
Overview: The Wi-Fi-enabled 2nd Generation Nest Protect is designed to detect smoke and carbon monoxide in a residential environment. It is equipped with a new Split Spectrum photoelectric sensor that can tell the difference between smoke and steam, so there are fewer false alarms. Nest Protect will alert you with a horn and a human voice when smoke or carbon monoxide are present. It can also send notifications to your smartphone or tablet to alert you of an emergency when you're not at home. Nest Protect's color-coded light ring changes color to alert you or simply lights your way in the dark. This model is designed to be hard-wired into your home's 120VAC - 60Hz electrical system. A battery-powered version is also available.
Heads Up and Emergency Alarms: Typical smoke detectors only have the loud piercing full alert that cannot easily be silenced. During false alarms, or when you simply burn the popcorn, the smoke detector's batteries are sometimes removed, putting occupants of the home in danger. Nest Protect offers two levels of alerts: Heads Up and Emergency Alarms. Nest Protect can detect low levels of smoke or carbon monoxide, and provide a gentle Heads Up as an early warning. This lets you ascertain what the problem is (through its voice message), and silence the alarm while the unit continues to monitor your home. If conditions worsen, the unit will sound a full Emergency Alarm with an 85dB horn (at 10 feet) and voice instructions (at 80dB at 3 feet) informing you what and where the problem is.
Network Connection: When every Nest Protect installed in your home is connected to your wireless network, they work together to keep you safe. When one unit detects an emergency, all connected units will alert you, and tell you which room the smoke or carbon monoxide is in. Typically, a Nest Protect unit can communicate other ones if they're within 50 feet from each other. The range varies due to the number of floors, building materials, duct work, large metallic appliances, etc. Nest Protect can also work with the Nest Learning Thermostat (when connected to the same wireless network) to improve the Auto-Away algorithms (through the Nest Protect's occupancy detectors), and automatically shut off your heating, a possible source of carbon monoxide leaks, if high levels of carbon monoxide are detected.
Nest App: You can connect to your Nest Protect (and Nest Learning Thermostat, if you own one) using your smartphone or tablet through the Nest App. The app can immediately alert you when you receive a Heads Up or Emergency Alarm, or you can use the app to check the status of your Nest Protect units while you're away. The new App Silence feature will allow you to quiet the alarm from your phone using Bluetooth LE, once you have made sure everything is OK. The app can also provide you a Safety History, showing what has happened over the last 10 days. The Nest App is compatible with iPhone and iPad (requires iOS 8.0 or later), and Android devices (running Android 4.0.3 or later).
Sensors: Nest Protect features eight sensors for detecting dangerous levels of smoke and carbon monoxide in a room, and to analyze its surroundings:
Self-testing: Nest Protect self-tests its sensors and batteries 400 times a day to make sure everything is working properly. As with the original Nest Protect, you can manually push the button on one detector and test every connected alarm in the house. This 2nd Generation unit lets you manually test all of your alarms from your phone. The Safety Checkup will test the sensors, power, Wi-Fi connection, horn, and speaker in the home with one tap. Once a month the system runs a Sound Check to make sure the horn and speaker do their jobs.
Light Ring: Nest Protect's light ring is both informative and functional. Most of the time, the light ring will be off. Its color-coded light has the following meanings:
Nightly Promise: Nest Protect continuously monitors its internal sensors, batteries, and Wi-Fi connection. Nightly Promise uses the ambient light sensor to determine when you turn out the lights at night. The unit glows green for a moment as you turn out the lights to indicate the sensors and batteries are all working properly. If the light ring glows yellow, it means the unit has detected a problem. When you press the Nest button, the Nest Protect's human voice will tell you what the problem is. You can also view the messages on the Nest App on your smartphone or tablet. This eliminates the annoying low-battery chirp coming from typical smoke detectors.
Note: A small green LED illuminates to indicate the unit is powered by 120V.
Pathlight: With the Pathlight feature, you no longer have to stumble around in the dark, or search for a flashlight or your smartphone to light your way. Nest Protect uses its occupancy and ambient light detectors to determine when you pass underneath the unit when the lights are out. The Pathlight feature briefly illuminates the light ring (white light) when you walk under the Nest Protect, and turns it off again approximately 10 seconds after you pass by. You can also program Pathlight to illuminate continuously when it's dark, if you wish to use it as a night light. The brightness of the light can be adjusted in the Nest App, if desired.
Installation: If you are comfortable working with household electrical systems, installation of the Nest Protect is fairly simple. (If you're not, see below for information on professional installation.) Nest Protect is designed to replace your current 120V smoke and carbon monoxide detectors using the current wiring and the supplied 120V connector and wire nuts. The unit comes with a backplate that can be mounted to a ceiling or wall with the four supplied screws. The backplate has four hooks that enable quick and easy mounting and removal of the Nest Protect unit.
Professional Installation: If you'd like to have your Nest Protect installed by a professional, you can search for a Nest Certified Professional in your area from the Nest website (nest.com/install).
Backup Batteries: The Nest Protect is equipped with 3 AA-sized Energizer Ultimate Lithium (L91) batteries, which act as a backup in case of power outage. Nest Labs recommends replacing exhausted batteries with the same type.

I've needed new smoke alarms for a few years. The Nest Protect is the most advanced smoke alarm available and has remained un-equaled for several years now. I have been putting off buy these for a few years to see if another company would bring a product to market that competes. Other "smart" smoke detectors do not have all the features and are slower to notify you when there is a problem, and do not offer significant cost savings when you consider the features they lack.
